Bythe end of this class, you will feel more confident about the steps necessary to obtain a good position. Throughin-class activities <strong>and</strong> homework assignments, you will learn how to create a strong resume, how to market yourskills to employers <strong>and</strong> how to find job openings for your field. The skills you learn in this class will help youthroughout your future career!Course Learning OutcomesAt the conclusion of this course students will be able to…1. Articulate the breadth of skills they have for a career in design <strong>and</strong> know how those relate to job search.2. Identify <strong>and</strong> research possible employers for their field <strong>and</strong> city of interest.3. Identify the most successful job search techniques <strong>and</strong> apply these techniques for job or internshipopportunities both locally <strong>and</strong> nationally.4. Communicate their skills <strong>and</strong> abilities to a potential employer through a resume, cover letter <strong>and</strong>reference list.5. Learn the types of portfolios employers expect in job interviews <strong>and</strong> learn the qualities that make astrong portfolio for their industry.6. Effectively utilize a professional portfolio in job interviews.7. Articulate what makes a quality job interview <strong>and</strong> will test this knowledge through practice interviews.8. Identify components of a salary/benefits offer, know how to research salary <strong>and</strong> develop strategies foreffective salary negotiation.9. Develop career related action plan to help them reach their career goals.


Class Policies:AttendanceBecause the topics for this course are best learned via class discussion, questions <strong>and</strong> interactive activities,attendance is required for this course. For an absence to be excused you must contact an instructor beforeclass with a valid reason for missing. Each unexcused absence <strong>and</strong> all excused absences after the first, will resultin 5 points being deducted from your final grade along with participation points for that class period.ParticipationParticipating in class is how you will learn the most! As a result, your final grade includes 15 points (2 per day)for participation. Being late, texting during class, not participating in group activities, falling asleep during class,failure to participate in large class discussion, <strong>and</strong>/or not having required materials with you to class are allreasons that participation points may be deducted from the total.Quality of WorkYour work should reflect college st<strong>and</strong>ards. All assignments must be typed, double spaced, st<strong>and</strong>ardmargin/font sizes, <strong>and</strong> grammatically correct. Please be sure to proof read your work; failure to do so willimpact your grade on assignments.Late AssignmentsIf you need an extension on assignment, please let the instructor know 1 week in advance of the deadline. I amwilling to be flexible during busy academic times. Without approved extensions, late work will be docked 10%for each day it is late. Should you have problems getting to class or printing your assignment, it is expected thatyou will email it on time instead.
