Comprising: Board of Finance and Administration – Director of Finance and the Director of
Administration, Executive Director, Publicity Officer, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, Registrar,
Functions Officer, Merchandise Coordinator, Web Administrator and Communications Officer.
This has been my first year as Director of Administration (position previously
known as the club secretary), and it had provided me with an overall
perspective of the clubs activities. It is from this vantage point, that I have
come to appreciate the amount of work, and the level of commitment
undertaken by our president and other members of the BOM in the day to
day running of the club.
This year saw the refurbishment of the boat shed roof space and creation of
the “Shark Tower Café”, a project undertaken to deliver the BOM’s promise
of continual improvement of the club buildings for both functionality and
social reasons. The result is a very attractive and enjoyable area, where all members can enjoy a
real coffee most times during the weekend and public holidays, plus a range of cooked and freshly
prepared snacks to keep the energy levels up.
One area of concern for the club is the absence of a “supply line” of suitable volunteers to take up
Board and in particular club officer bearer positions, which are essential for the ongoing health of the
clubs management. The area of the club that should be a “nursery” for future committee position
holders is nippers and more particularly the parents. I say this because that’s where I started my
involvement with the club 12 years ago, and have found it a rewarding and enjoyable time, during
which I have made lifelong friends. So I would urge nipper parents to look beyond the nipper
participation with the club, and get involved with the whole club.
Lastly, there always so many people to thank, but this year in particular I would like to single out two
people who have been truly amazing. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of our president Doug
Lucas and our Club Captain Jeremy Keating, without whom the club’s overall momentum would
have stalled, so I thank you both for you commitment and dedication to Long Reef.
Very best wishes for the 2012/2013 season.
2.%President’s%Report%
This season the club has looked to stabilise after what has been a difficult
couple of years. The role of the volunteer is rapidly changing as social and
club demands increase. What has been pleasing is the diligent and small
group of core members that have succeeded to keep the club going and in
particular our Board of Management who have worked tirelessly to ensure
we have meet all the administration, lifesaving and educational
requirements set by our affiliated organisations and local authorities. In
recent seasons as an organisation SLSNSW and SLSA are employing
more and more staff, which is flowing down to clubs creating additional
workloads, policies and responsibilities for clubs to follow. 17 of the 21
clubs now on the Northern Beaches employ staff on close to a full time
capacity, however clubs are having similar difficulties to us with volunteers.
I thank and praise the work of Board members who have this season taken on multiple roles with
numerous officer bearer positions being un-filled following the AGM. It is as a result of your hard
work alone we again for the second consecutive season won the 2011/12 Sydney Northern
Beaches Most Outstanding Club. This is simply an amazing and remarkable achievement for our
club and is as a direct result of the work of such a small number filling the compliance issues as
required. It shows that it is not the number of people you need but the quality. Special mention must
go to Jeremy Keating our Director of Lifesaving, Ian Wallace our Director of Education, Pete Selosse
our Director of Surf Sports for their huge work in lifesaving and education. Without their
perseverance and club loyalty much of what occurs in the club would not be possible.
On the administration front the team has been incredibly small. Again we had next to no volunteers
to fill club officer bear positions such as registrar, publicity officer, OHS officer meaning the work fell
to Michelle Limana as Director of Finance, Seamus Redmond as Director of Administration and
myself. Firstly Michelle, all I can say is wow. Michelle has been brilliant and if we had a couple more
Michelle’s the club would run seamlessly for years to come. Michelle has in my opinion been the
most organised Director of Finance that I
can remember and it has been brilliant
working with her on the board. Michelle is
an example of getting a mother involved
from Nippers and coming through the
senior ranks with her kids and I can’t
thank her enough. She certainly was well
deserving of the 75 th Anniversary medal
for services to the club. Seamus needs
no introduction after years of service to
the club on the Board. Again this year we
have faced a number of situations, and
Seamus has calmly and professionally
dealt with each given situation and for
this I thank him. With the significant
5!

increases in administration we trialed the employment of a full time employee for a few weeks at the
start of the season. Regrettably this did not work out and is a significant change in the way the clubs
runs and which roles within the club are paid and which remain voluntary. What we do know is that it
should not be a significant cost to volunteers who fill their roles. We are looking at other alternatives
financial / resource incentives to reduce the burden and looking to work more with the SNB Branch
and our neighboring clubs.
As we have done for the last few seasons we have focused on some kind of capital improvement of
our facilities. With the drama over the development last few seasons the Board looked at a more
immediate way to improvement facilities for our members and make better use of the existing space.
To this effect Seamus, Adam Kent and I designed a simple BBQ area on the existing roof, replacing
the existing staircase and putting in a glass railing to ensure the upstairs area of the club complied
with the Australian Building Code and could again be used. After a number of weeks of full time work
what has been created is an enjoyable and useable BBQ area for club members and an area to
raise some funds for the club through weekly social BBQ activities. We also after years of discussion
laid synthetic turf in the courtyard which I am sure you all agree has had an immediate affect on
making a much cleaner hall and more usable space with the enormous wear on the courtyard not
allowing real grass to grow anymore. Whilst talking about the club building it would be remise of me
not to pay tribute to Bernadette McAlinden who for several seasons now has looked after our
building, key allocation and hire hires. This season we have had several hall hires that have caused
Bernadette some stress, however she deals with all given situations with poise assisting the club to
raise some much-needed funds and for this we cant say thank you enough. Again much of this work
completely goes un-noticed by our members.
Another exciting development was the club taking ownership of a new patrol hut. This hut was built
after 5 years of lobbying with Warringah Council to provide an area for patrollers to patrol the beach
from during inclement weather as our clubhouse is the only beach that cannot see the water. This
hut was greatly appreciated by our members and has been subsequently fitted out by the club with
chairs, computer for SurfGuard data entry, radios, binoculars, freezer and first aid equipment to
allow 2-3 patrollers to comfortably patrol the beach with vital elevation of the beach for improved
vision regardless of the weather. We also as a new initiative this season placed a Public Access
Defibrillator Box outside the club for after-hours emergencies. In addition education on its use was
provided to those interested local community members. We hope that it never needs to be used but
we are pleased to be able to provide this equipment for our community.
In previous seasons as mentioned in the Director of Sponsorship report we have focused on events.
Unfortunately we did not run the Fenn Cup Paddle series this season with the event being moved to
Collaroy. As a result all our focus was placed upon the ‘Tour of Buoys’ Ocean Swim. Thanks to the
dedicated Seamus the swim went off without a hitch and ran like clockwork. What was pleasing was
seeing all the club members come together, meeting new people and working together as a group.
These sort of events unite the club and it is something we need to do more off.
6!

As usual the club again ran a very large training
and education program thanks to the tireless
work of Ian Wallace, Adam Kent, Lachlan Gadd,
Pete Selosse and Jeremy Keating and also Tony
Jackson who took the SRC group. The club
trained a huge number of new award members
which was great to see. Hats off to Ian and the
team for their work in particular ensuring that the
club complied with our VET requirements for
paperwork and SurfGuard, which is no easy
task. What has been disappointing is the lack of
those new members looking to come through and get involved in club activities. Of about 100 people
trained in their SRC or BM less than 6 of them attended the Annual Dinner to get their award and
similarly small numbers have joined patrols. This workload on our assessors and instructors is not
maintainable if new members leave so quickly after getting their award and the club needs to look at
better ways of engaging newly trained members through social interaction, patrols, trips away,
internal and external competition. I also thank our five other club assessors Ian Wallace, Jeremy
Keating, Lachlan Gadd, Adam Kent and Peter Selosse for your work in your proficiencies and
assessments in a variety of awards. A simply amazing amount of time all for the benefit of others.
This group of small assessors did 159 assessments and proficiencies across the branch.
The school programs have had some mixed results. Shore continues strongly under the watchful
eye of MIC Nigel Scozzi and we thank the school for their continued involved and contributions to
patrols. The school is finding it difficult to meet all the award requirements for patrols these days with
SLSA each year introducing more demands yet they are doing the best they can which we
appreciate. The challenge still remains to try and retain at least 2 or 3 keen year 12 boys each
season to remain involved at Longy and not go to other clubs.
Abbotsleigh was in its second season in 2011/12 and I thank Jeremy for this enthusiasm to keep this
program running. The program is different to Shore in that Abbotsleigh teachers are not involved and
the program for the last two seasons has been entirely run by club members. Unfortunately after
training over 100 girls we have had a very small retention rate on patrols or in club activities and the
program is now under review.
On the beach I thank Jeremy our Director of Lifesaving for this energy and enthusiasm in his first full
season. This season we did not have any volunteers to fill the two Vice Captain roles which lead to
significant patrol hours being filled by certain members to cover patrol short falls. What was
highlighted this season was the number of no-shows. This is something that we need as a club to
work together more as a team and ensure that we arrange substitutes to cover our patrols and the
various award requirements. Throughout the season Jeremy was lucky enough to win an SLSA
competition winning a weekend away in January to Piha in New Zealand. Jeremy took 2 other
members, Andrew Selosse and Grace McLaughlin to share this fabulous opportunity and from all
accounts they had a brilliant time. Jeremy I know is trying hard to work with patrol members to do the
roster and look at other alternatives such as all day patrols. It is never an easy job being the Club
Captain and keeping patrols on the beach and we thank Jeremy for his outstanding efforts with little
support. Jeremy was a finalist for the SNB Beaches Lifesaver of the Year and in my opinion was
7!

incredibly unfortunate not to be chosen as the winner. Certainly it is a credit to Andy Cross of South
Narrabeen who won the award.
On the patrol front we also looked to assist and extend our services this season. Patrols at Long
Reef can often be long and boring with the Warringah Lifeguard now doing most of the set up with
their quad bike and patrols being very large. With that in mind to keep our members excited in
interested our club offered assistance to other clubs including Bungan Beach, South Narrabeen and
a trip away to Pacific Palms. These trips were predominantly filled with cadets aged 15-17, the
program led this year by Tony Jackson as Cadet coordinator, Pete Selosse, Jeremy and myself.
Tony has done a great job with these kids keeping them interested and involved and these trips
away provided patrollers additional patrol experiences without Lifeguard support as well as forming
greater bonds between each of the members. The clubs that we assisted were particularly grateful.
Also thanks to those members who engaged in SNB Branch Support Services doing additional
patrols on behalf of the Branch and club doing radio shifts, Jet Ski patrols and Duty Officer. It is each
of these activities that keep the greater branch lifesaving activities running so smoothly.
On the youth front I thank Rhonda Ferguson and her team for their hard work in running our Nipper
program. It has been pleasing to see so many kids keen to join clubs. At the conclusion of season
2011/12 the Board of Management had the difficult task at looking at the greater club to ensure its
continued existence in the future. During the August 1997 Management Committee meeting Scott
Plunkett & Peter Clarke suggested the return of Long Reef nippers after several failed attempts to
8!

get a junior activities program running. Ruth Erby, Janse De Jonge (x) and Peter Selosse were the
driving force realising that dream with 64 Nippers commencing that season. Since then, the club has
not looked back and nipper members have grown in numbers for the last 5 seasons the club
averaging between 360-390 nippers each season.
Unfortunately for several reasons the senior part of the club has had a significant decline in
membership involvement and club activities keeping members engaged. This has had a significant
impact on the workload of those members remaining. Years gone by members were passionate,
proud and very vocal about their membership of Long Reef SLSC or another club. These days’
people will take it or leave it rather it is for many just another sport, something that you do along your
life’s journey.
The difficultly comes when organisations such as ours are entirely run by volunteers with fewer and
fewer people each season choosing to take on a leadership role. Whilst the number of people
wanting to do nippers and youth activities has continued to grow across all clubs on the Northern
Beaches, the number of people doing the roles has actually decreased and obviously this is not
sustainable. Long Reef is one of the first clubs to significantly face this challenge due to 75% of our
membership being under 18 years of age and other clubs being supported by a number of older
members with their clubs having longer histories.
9!

The Board of Management has been forced to look at all club operations for the future of Long Reef
SLSC. As a club we need to focus on a balance and try something different. The very success of the
nipper program in recent seasons and focus on youth programs including our schools we feel
contributed to a decline in other areas of the club and we have failed in the last few seasons to
integrate parents into the wider club. For season 2012/13 the Board has voted to try something
different changing nippers to Saturday afternoon from 3pm – 5pm followed by social Sippers for all
members. This style of program runs successfully at all clubs in South Australia and Western
Australia so that the senior part of the club can focus on more activities for its senior members
including, cadets, competition and education on Sunday mornings whilst still running a successful
nipper program. Also of the 6 major nipper carnivals each season they are on Sunday mornings and
with only 10% competing at carnival’s it means the remaining 90% don’t miss out on nippers that
week. We identify that this change won’t work for everybody and we will lose a number of families,
for that we are sorry. I have personally contacted each of the Presidents at surrounding clubs to
notify them on our decision and to welcome any transferring members. We are also aware of a
number of families from other clubs who are excited about the change and will join our ranks. The
future of Long Reef SLSC depends upon the ability to change with the times and societies demands.
As a Board of Management our responsibilities are to Long Reef SLSC Inc. and its patrolling
members and we must not be afraid to try something
new. Only time will tell if we have made the correct
decision.
Long Reef SLSC will still remain a family oriented club in
fact from this change in the program we are hoping to
further engage entire families in the lifesaving ethos. We
will continue to deliver a quality nipper program with
weekly activities to develop a range of surf skills and surf
education. We will further work with parents and strongly
encourage them to become coaches and run mid week
training for the kids. We will encourage parents to
become officials to officiate at carnivals, become age managers and under-go their Bronze
Medallion. History shows that those parents who engage within the club will have greater family
enjoyment for years to come and that there kids will remain involved having greater fun rather than
dropping out. The old saying you only get out what you put in could not be closer to the truth.
On the competition front this season we had only a small contingent of members competing. A full
report can be found in the Director of Surf Sports report. I make particular mention however to the
achievements of the Ikuna’s Boat Crew who for the last few years have stuck together as a local
group of boys and trained hard. In their last year of U23’s they rowed particularly well and were
unlucky not to come away with a State or Australian Medal. It is hoped some of these younger
members will as they now get older to take leadership roles within the club and continue their
competition encouraging new members. I also mention achievements at the Australian Masters,
Margaret Pearson who claimed Gold in the 40-44 female 2km run and the Vets crew who claimed
Gold in the 240ys boats, congratulations. The club needs to again start to focus heavily on
competition somehow as it epitomizes what SLS is about, health, fitness, mateship and dedication
as it prepares members to save a life if required and is a whole load of fun. The club has not had a
10!

Race Secretary for a number of years and this we need to rectify. This season after a number of
years of absence we re-ignited the championships on a weekend of fun holding a trivia night on the
Saturday night with 47 in attendance followed by 21 people racing on the Sunday morning during a
lovely April morning to finish off the season. This year’s events were won by Andrew and Monique
Selosse and in the coming season we will focus heavily on such events.
Of personal achievements this year I congratulate Angus Vowell and Adam L’Green who in the aim
of having a bit of an adventure and raising some funds for the club elected to paddle rescue boards
from Stockton Beach to Long Reef over 4 days a total of 110km. The guys had a great adventure
and at the conclusion managed to raise about $5700 for the club. Another adventure this season
was the George Bass Rowing Marathon with 20 Long Reef members being involved at various
stages of the trip. Congratulations on finishing what is an epic race. Ross Matthews was another one
to pass a milestone. The Life Member and former President of the club reached his 50 th year on
patrol this season after gaining his Bronze Medallion on the 18 th February, 1962. Ross these days
lives in the Blue Mountains but continues to drive down to Longy as an active reserve member.
Congratulations Ross.
I congratulate the SLSSNB
Executive and paid staff
led by President Gordon
Lang on their running of
the Branch this year and
for the administration
support given. Gordon after
5 years has stepped down
as Branch President and
we thank him for his
contributions and wish him
well in the future. This position has now been filled by then Deputy President, David Murray. Also, I
would like to extend our thanks to our club’s major sponsors, DY RSL, Spank Swimwear, MEGA,
and Wade Oldham. We also welcome new sponsors NAB at Dee Why and Stuart Blinds. We also
thank the generous support from the Branch sponsors including Streets ice-cream, Coke, DHL and
Energy Australia. Without such support it would be impossible for us to continue our Club operations
and core focus of providing a safe aquatic environment.
The challenge now is to focus next season our senior membership. Our active patrollers who patrol
our beach and have performed over 5000 patrol hours on-behalf of our community. The Board has
made a bold and brave decision to change our programs for next season. It is now up to you as the
members to look to get more out of your club and ensure its long-term future.
Yours in Surf,
After winning the 2010/11 Sydney Northern Beaches Most Outstanding Club it was certainly going to
be interesting to see how the club faired backing up from such an outstanding season.
This year Long Reef SLSC was really driven in many aspects by a small few who did a tremendous
amount of work to ensure that the club complied with all areas of club administration, training,
education and expected protocol’s. I won’t name these few people as you know who you are but
without the enormous efforts by these members the club would have had a number of significant
holes to fill this season and the club’s success in this year’s awards is directly down to their superb
efforts. It was a night of excitement and I can proudly announce that on the 29 th June, 2012 Long
Reef was for the second consecutive year named as the 2011/12 Sydney Northern Beaches Most
Outstanding Club. This is now the third time in the clubs history to win this prestigious award.
Director of Lifesaving Jeremy Keating was honored for the second consecutive season as the
Branch MC for the evening. Other individual and club achievement’s included:
• 2012 Sydney Northern Beaches Most Outstanding Club
• 2012 Sydney Northern Beaches Most Outstanding Club ‘Lifesaving’ category
• 2012 Sydney Northern Beaches Most Outstanding Club ‘Education’ category
• Matilda Griffith, High Commendation, Sydney Northern Beaches Rookie of the Year,
• Katelyn Jackson, Sydney Northern Beaches Female Youth Patroller of the Year,
Comprising Board of Lifesaving: Director of Life Saving, 2 Vice Captains, Gear Steward, OHS
Officer, First Aid Officer, Radio Officer, IRB Captain and Patrol Captains.
Still no lives lost! That is a proud thing to continue to boast after such a long history of Long Reef
SLSC patrolling at Long Reef Beach. While it may have become a standard scenario for Long Reef,
our service to the community is no doubt appreciated by the rescues and preventions we perform
each season.
It has been a much quieter season than most, which I can mostly account to the less-than-exciting
weather we had to endure over the season. I believe we were cheated from a proper summer, as
nearly half our patrols on the beach faced cloudy or wet weather. This is reflected by our beach
attendance, which was down a third from last season to fewer than 90,000 visitors for the summer.
However, I have to say after my short history at the club that any summer at Long Reef is a great
summer!
Prior to the season commencing Warringah Council placed a patrol hut on the southern side of the
main walkway. This hut was installed after a number of years of lobbying. The hut now allows for a
couple of patrollers to sit and watch the beach from an elevated level and free from the sand, wind
and rain during inclement weather. The club also retired its old gear trailer to allow for the storage of
a new Warringah Council Lifeguard Quad Bike. Throughout the season patrols found not having a
gear trailer a major inconvenience and the design and manufacture of a new trailer will be completed
over the winter months ready for season 2012/13. With the amount of equipment required to be on
patrols such a trailer is crucial.
17!

I would like to extend my gratitude to
each and every one of the patrollers
and water safety volunteers at Long
Reef who give up even an hour of
their time to volunteer. These people
are the core of surf lifesaving, and
while our club conducts a lot of
activities in a number of facets,
patrols are the lifeblood of our club
and of the movement. While
attendance hasn’t been spectacular
over the season with a growing
number of ‘no-shows’ on patrol, there
are a group of people who fill patrol
gaps, provide additional support and
are general go-getters on patrol.
These are our top 10 patrollers, listed further, who make sure that we do not end up short of
numbers. This season, this group has conducted almost 1700 hours between them, which is a great
asset to the clubs patrol services. In total our patrollers performed 5121 patrol hours for and on
behalf of the community keeping it safe.
Of course these patrols each need direction, and it is thanks to our fine patrol captains that we get
patrols on the beach, and this season we haven’t had to deal with signing on late, and haven’t had
many other beach issues. A number of patrol captains have been in these roles for many years, and
I am looking to find some new captains to take us into the future. If you are interested, please do not
hesitate to get in touch with me.
I would also like to thank Doug Lucas for his role as Vice Captain over the season. His assistance
was fantastic throughout the season helping fill shortages in patrol gaps, but he was absolutely
awesome in looking after the gear inspection and beach management over the first month of the
season while I took time away to finish off my university studies. By filling patrol gaps and being
involved with support services, Doug has amassed over 480 patrol hours, sure to be a club record
thus far. Additionally, I would like to thank Jim, Pete and Andrew Selosse for their assistance with
18!

IRB maintenance over the season.
We also have had an increased interest in support services over the branch during the season. This
includes those tasks that aren’t always observed, but support the patrolling function of our members.
This includes radio operators, jet ski operators and duty officers. This season, our support services
team includes Doug Lucas (Radio Operator, Jet Ski, Duty Officer), Peter Selosse (Jet Ski), Luke
Dawson (Radio Operator), Katelyn Jackson (Radio Operator), and Matilda Griffith (Radio Operator).
Sydney Northern Beaches greatly appreciated the support of these individuals just as I do too.
During the season, up to a final trip in January, Long Reef has provided patrol support to a number
of beaches both along the northern beaches, throughout NSW and even in other states around the
country (Western Australia and South Australia). Long Reef patrolled the beach at Bungan Beach
and South Narrabeen on some days to support these clubs who struggle for patrolling numbers. The
patrol assistance also extended to a trip taking almost 26 cadets and club members up to Pacific
Palms near Forster for a weekend, which was great fun for all involved. One of the greatest
elements of this is the chance to patrol without a lifeguard, which really reminds those patrollers to
stay alert and make those key decisions. Next season maybe we can head south for a weekend
away, stay tuned!
Again, Patrol 6, lead by Doug, received the award at the 62 nd Annual Dinner for best patrol. Nick
Hadzipasic and Luke Dawson, who have been a fantastic help throughout the year, were awarded
Long Reef Patrollers of the Year. These two have both been nominated for the SNB Male Youth
Patroller of the Year, and Katelyn Jackson has been successfully nominated as the SNB Female
Youth Patroller of the Year. Matilda Griffith has also been nominated (Rookie of the Year), as has
Doug Lucas (Volunteer of the Year). I wish all these candidates the best of luck at the awards night
in June.
I am already looking forward to next season. It is important that I can be flexible when working with
our patrollers, and as such we are trialing some all-day patrols for those groups that wish to
participate in such opportunities. Speak to your patrol captain if you have any thoughts on this
matter. Additionally, I would love to continue to provide patrol
support to clubs that don’t have the same resources we are fortunate
to have at Long Reef. Anyone interested in participating in this
should contact me over the winter so we can get a fun weekend
organised. It is relaxing patrolling at a smaller beach, and great
being in a new environment, so I thoroughly suggest you give it
some consideration.
As a club captain, it is sad to have seen so few people looking to
take on leadership roles within the club, as I have loved my journey
and being part of the club’s management team. I hope to be able to
inspire and encourage others to take on future roles at Long Reef,
as it has surely given me back more than I can put in.
For the winter, have some well-deserved time away from the club. I
look forward to working with each of you next season to allow Long
19!

Reef SLSC to not only remain strong, but improve its beach activities, and continue to be the Sydney
Northern Beaches most outstanding club for support to our lifesaving services.
As another season comes to the end, we can now look back on what we
have achieved in the training and assessment of our club members. I am
proud to say that Long Reef won the Sydney Northern Beaches Branch
Most Outstanding Club for Support to Education, what a fantastic
achievement for our team!
As trainers we started the season with quite a few goals we wanted to
achieve and worked very hard as a team at Longy to try to achieve these.
A huge thank you to the small group of trainers and assessors at the club
who have given many hours of their free time to train and assess
members at the club. This group has also been some of the most
frequent assessors attending external assessments for Bronze Medallion,
SRC and IRB driver. For assessors at the club the season starts before
we start patrolling, attending their own proficiencies, updates and learning
about changes to awards that are being trained. During the season after
assessing or training, many nights are spent working their way through
the increasing mountain of paperwork that seems to be increasing every season!
We had identified at the start of the season the areas that we believed needed improvement,
increase the essential awards needed on patrols, particularly IRB driver, ARTC and Spinal
Management. Looking back we have achieved some of our goals, however we realise we cannot
move mountains in just one season and no matter how hard we try to encourage and support in the
area of training and education. The start of the new season will bring refreshed trainers and
assessors keen to strengthen and build on our achievements of the past season.
Most of the trainers at the club have recently qualified
as branch mentors, which means we are now able to
mentor any member that is interested gaining a
training or assessing award at the club.
As far as awards are concerned, one of the least
awarded has been gained by a long-standing
member of Long Rees SLSC, and recognises the
outstanding time and commitment he has given to
the club and to Surf Lifesaving over a 50 year period.
Ross Mathews recently gained his 50 year Long
Service Award, and his 50 year National Patrol
Service award, what an amazing achievement, we
23!

are rightly proud as a club that Ross has achieved this milestone in Surf Lifesaving. When you see
Ross, ask him what it was like to be a member of the Surf Lifesaving movement 50 years ago, he’ll
be pleased to tell you.
Jeremy our Club Captain gained his Gold Medallion in advanced lifesaving, a fantastic achievement.
Adam Kent gained his Bronze Medallion assessors award and joins the small group of assessors at
Long Reef.
Our trainers managed to train 63 people for their Bronze
Medallion, 37 for their SRC award, other awards gained included
ARTC 24, Senior First Aid 37, IRB crew person 14, Silver
Medallion IRB driver 1, Bronze Medallion assessor 1.
The clubs relationship with Abbotsleigh school continued in term 1,
with a large group of girls completing their Bronze Medallions and
SRC certificates, many thanks to the students that qualified the
previous season who helped our trainers with the new squads and
also helped at the assessment. Certainly the club would have liked
to see a few more of these girls continue with patrols however it
appears other activities have occupied their time
Shore schools normal schedule of carrying out assessments at the
end of term 1 was interrupted when it clashed with a proposed
lifesaving competition. Despite the efforts of all those involved in
training at the club, assessments had to re-scheduled until after
the Xmas break.
One of the seasons training goals was to encourage more nipper
parents to gain their Bronze Medallions, this would hopefully mean
that we had a new influx of mature members on patrol and into the
future, and they would also be able to carry out water safety during
nippers water events. At Longy historically it has been the nipper
parents who have completed their Bronze Medallions that have
become the backbone of the club, and gone onto be long term
patrolling members.
We had a group of around 12 parents who started the course, it
was a very capable group and all passed with flying colours, it was
very enjoyable helping to train them and I hope they got a lot out of
the course, we are looking forward to all of them joining patrols
next season. We will again be looking to encourage new parents
next season to challenge themselves and sign up for the Bronze
Medallion course at the club.
24!

A big thank you to Tony Jackson who this
season took on the challenge of organising
the training for the SRC candidates. This
helped our trainers concentrate on the
other areas of education at the club. Tony
did a fantastic job with his group, was very
well organised and produced a very well
trained squad who all enjoyed themselves
and those assessed for their SRC award
were of a very high standard.
One of our main focuses during the season
has been to increase our number of qualified IRB drivers. Long Reef has always been known for the
quality of it’s drivers, but over the last few seasons, the number of drivers has dwindled to only a
handful. So much so that some patrols are often lacking a driver on rostered days with those hours
having to be made up by the same old members.
Doug in particular has been trying to actively address the situation, running numerous crew and
drivers courses. 2 crew courses were run in the season, but the drivers course fizzled out as course
participants lost traction and did not complete an assessment during the season. Renewed effort will
be made next season to increase numbers, hopefully with renewed increase in IRB racing during the
winter, this will act as a spring board and produce a group of upcoming drivers. If you have your
crew award and are interested in the drivers course please contact Doug, Jeremy or myself and we
can let you know when a new course will be taking place.
Although we are volunteers and love training club members, more of our time does seem to be taken
up not training but completing paperwork and SurfGuard entries. Nonetheless we are committed to
training candidates to the highest standard we possibly can. We take great pride in upholding the
high standards in education that the club is known for throughout the branch. We always inform
members of upcoming courses, but if there is something you are particularly interested in doing with
regard rewards, please let us know.
Thanks again to all our trainers and assessors at Long Reef SLSC and the countless hours you
have given freely. Congratulations to all the members that gained an award during the season, there
are still many more to
complete so don’t hold
back!
performed 159 assessments and proficiencies for season 2011/12 an amazing work load and
amount of voluntary time for others to achieve their goals. Sadly many clubs are lacking assessors
with people not being prepared to do the role since SLS changed to Vocational Education and
Another nipper season has come to an end and it was great to see the weather was pretty kind to us
throughout the season and the water conditions allowed the water events to proceed on the majority
of weekends which was a good improvement from the previous year.
It was fantastic to see so many of the nippers return for this season along with many new members
joining the Long Reef nipper family. There were a number of volunteers that gave up their own time
and the nippers program would not be a success without people volunteering to help out. We had
During the 2011/12 season, Long Reef continued their Cadets (under 14 to under 18) development
programme with 38 cadets in total registering for the season. The highlights of the season included:
• Start of season and end of season dinners and karaoke nights held in Brookvale,
• The LRSLSC Nine Beaches Challenge raising $350 for Autism by walking from Long Reef to
Manly, surfing along the course (an initiative developed by LR members from the cadets
group),
• Patrolling at Bungan Beach without lifeguards on several occasions helping out a smaller
club,
• Weekend road trip to Pacific Palms SLSC. Patrolling & relieving members during their
holiday period, movies, dinner out and general weekend of fun
• achievement of bronze and SRC award, ARTC, IRB crewman’s and training for IRB driver,
• Regular Sunday morning long board paddles between Long Reef and Dee Why beach
followed by a hot chocolate on the roof talking about their adventures with a pod of Dolphins
that joined the group,
• And allocation to, and performing patrols with other club members at Long Reef.
This season the cadets also played a vital role in assisting the running of the Long Reef nippers
each Sunday morning by undertaking water safety and assistant age managing roles, and generally
mentoring the junior club members.
It was pleasing this season to see the cadets programme provide a strong basis of Long Reef cadets
to develop and pursue further opportunities for their transition from junior to senior club members. A
great group of cadets has evolved who have forged great friendship while being involved at Long
For years Long Reef has struggled to develop competition on an
on-going basis. We have had seasons where members have
engaged in these pursuits but it has only been short lived. We
have had on-going surf boat crews but in recent seasons other
areas of the club have been hit and miss. We have had at times
very strong IRB teams receiving national and state medals. We
have had strong lifesaving teams receiving state and national
medals but currently at this point in time we are lacking leadership
and people prepared in the club to recruit member’s interest,
organise training and further develop competition across a variety
of events. It is not about winning it is about participation and
having a go.
Competition is the lifeblood of a Surf Club. It is a chance to hone
skills that may one day save a life. It is an opportunity to keep fit,
have bled ‘blue’. Certainly it is an area that as a club we need to develop from within and it starts
with weekly events such as the club swim and club championships. In recent years again nobody
has stood up to be the race secretary and weekly club competition has stalled. This year an attempt
late in the season was made by Doug to hold the club championships with 21 club members getting
involved. It is hoped that next season we are able to further encourage weekly Sunday morning
competition across the board, which may lead to more interest in carnival attendance both in junior,
opens and masters events. This is one of the reasons we have looked to trial our nipper program on
a Saturday afternoon to encourage more senior events on Sunday morning. In accordance with the
SLS policy all competitors have to patrol and so therefore there is an added bonus with patrollers
being fitter, stronger and ready for any rescue situation that may present.
On the nippers front we have had a number of kids compete in various carnivals this season as
highlighted in their report. This included a number of nippers attending the State Championships at
Kingscliff, which was an enjoyable trip for those families in attendance. Congratulations to all
involved. It has been great to see a growing number of kids attending training sessions. Again the
only way for kids to improve is with regular mid-week training that relies upon various parents taking
interest in organising coaching programs. The club has lots of equipment for the kids to use and it is
amazing how quickly the kids skills develop with a couple of sessions mid week.
On the beach we had several members, Ben
O’Reilly and Margaret Pearson training hard for
the 2km run and Margaret encouraging several
masters members to enter the East Coast and
Branch Championships in beach events.
Congratulations to Margaret who won Gold both at
the State and Australian Championships in the 40-
44 female category and Andrew Selosse who
gained Gold at the NSW U19 Champion Lifesaver
events. Also specific mention to our Vets crew who
managed another clean sweep of the Branch,
State and National Championships in the 240
years category.
Lastly, the IRB team. Numbers have been small
this season with the team lacking drivers.
Unfortunately the club has had a significant drop in
the number of drivers on patrol. Attempts are being
made to encourage the team and re-unit it as a
sport within the club. One can only try but never
the less those members who are involved are
certainly having a fantastic time racing and having
several weekends away over the winter months.
Next season the club will have a strong focus on
internal competition with the return of weekly
Sunday morning club swims commencing at 10am.
This will be followed by a board race and beach run. If you are interested in taking on a role of
organising some internal competition on Sunday mornings or other training sessions don’t be shy. It
is a social and informal way to getting more involved in competition. The club is certainly looking for
volunteers so if interested please let us know.
12.%IRB%Report%
On the education front this season it has been a disappointing season in the IRB’s. The club has run
several IRB crewman courses however we have been unsuccessful in encouraging any members to
obtain their IRB Silver Medallion. It is essential that we focus on driver training next season. The
IRB’s play a pivotal role in patrols, water safety for club activities and fundraisers so it is hoped
several members will step up and train to complete this award. IRB’s are ever so important in rough
and dangerous surf and Longy has a proud history in this area.
Racing - This season as usual IRB racing commenced in April once patrols finished. The team this
season was again small with the club lacking people wishing to be drivers limiting the number of
people able to complete. IRB racing is made up of 3 components, IRB drivers, crewman and
patients. The team this year did much of its training with North Narrabeen under the watchful and
experienced eye of their Captain Luke ‘Nugget’ Fittock. These sessions allowed the Longy team to
gain some additional skills and get that larger team atmosphere with weekly Saturday afternoon
trainings.
This season the team competed over 5 rounds of
the NSW Championships including carnivals at
Mollymook on the South Coast, Terrigal Beach,
Forster, Wollongong City and the State
Championships at Fingal Beach. The Australian
Championships were then held at Ocean Beach
on the Central Coast.
For those just starting out in racing in their first
season SLSNSW have implemented a ‘novice’
category which is open to any age for those just
starting out in racing. Each of the IRB’s have the
same IRB hull and engine so like all sports it comes down to training, those who get their start right,
trim the boats correctly through the surf, do their patient pick ups correctly and come home strong
with the driver timing their jump to sprint up the beach
The team competed strongly at each of the carnivals with IRB drivers including Andrew Selosse and
Nathan Gibson and crewman / patients Jake Hatfield, Nick Hadzipasic, Monique Selosse, Molly
Clarke and Grace McLachlan. The teams competed in a variety of events including the Mass
Rescue, (2 patients) Straight rescue (1 patient) Tube race and teams. The best results came in the
tube events making several finals against stiff competition.
Again the team had a great season with several weekends away. The team is very keen to grow and
develop the numbers of driver's within the club so if you are interested see Nathan or Andrew and
just give it a go.
After hours operations - Several times a year beaches along the NSW coast are hit with large
storms, coastal erosion and localised flooding from surging waves and rising tides. The last big
storm to hit the Northern Beaches was on Sunday 9 th April 2006. On this day 2 x Long Reef IRBs
(Jim Selosse, Tom Rees, Peter Selosse and Luke Hochkins) were called by NSW Police on two
separate occasions to rescue a total of 7 people from just off Dee Why pool after Dee Why SLSC
were unable to lunch their IRB, followed by another successful rescue off Long Reef headland.
On Tuesday 5th June 2012 Sydney was again hit with a fierce afternoon storm. Southerly winds of
120km per hour hit the beaches whipping up waves of over 10 metres. The Longy IRB team started
to get very excited, planning to hit the water days in advance with the advanced forecast swell. After
some lengthy discussions the evening prior the decision was to assess conditions before allowing
the team to hit the water. The morning of Wednesday 6th June conditions were again assessed.
The conditions were certainly rough and the surf was putting on a spectacular display. A decision
was made that the keen and enthusiastic team were not allowed to go through the break at long reef
due to the size, ferocity and strength of the waves and wind.
The team was still keen to get wet after
watching for the waves for several hours
and after discussions they were permitted
to enter the inner break and do inshore
work down to the Dee Why pool where 6
years earlier they had been required to
carry out several rescues. Long Reef SLSC
takes it’s after hour rescue responsibilities
seriously. For those not aware 13 Surf (13
78 73) is an after-hours NSW Police call out
system that works 7 days a week, 24 hours
a day. Clubs are required to have
operational IRB ready for action.
Traditionally such rescues are not carried
out on flat days, rather they are carried out
in rough and potentially dangerous surf.
There is always risk but Long Reef SLSC
does not totally avoid risk as the activities of
SLS will always have an element of risk.
Rather we minimise risk through
appropriate planning, assessments,
additional safety equipment and increased
training. As a club we have for afterhours
work gone above SLSA policy with
additional training and equipment. The club
has 4 red and yellow quarter ‘Gath’ helmets
for drivers and crew, PDF lifejackets,
operational vests containing a PLB
34!

(personal location beacon), flares and strobes for night operations. The public rely upon the
lifesavers in these conditions to perform a rescue and as we all know there are always people that
try to test conditions kit surfing, surfing or body boarding. LRSLSC is very fortunate enough to have
some very skilled and experienced operators who have now for several years been training the
younger members coming through the IRB race team in a controlled and heavily supervised
environment to ensure our members are trained and competent for such a rescue occasion.
After a length safety briefing, check of equipment, changing of props to 3 blades four members, Tom
Rees, Nathan Gibson, Shane Stewart and Andrew Selosse hit the surf. As they hit the surf a kit
surfer was just attempting to hit the water with the boys advising him not to try. The boys then tested
conditions within the break at Longy. When comfortable they headed south using their training to do
an inshore run to sit off Dee Why pool and out through the ‘escalator’. Under the experience
instruction of Pete Selosse it was fantastic to see the skills and confidence these members have
gained.
Several people may be critical for allowing members out in the surf on such a day. We are not
negligent in our decision making rather it would be negligent to not train members who are called
upon to perform rescues in such conditions. The NSW Police do not have vessels that can perform
such rescues within the break and it is our volunteers who are called upon by the Police on a very
regular basis to perform that task on their behalf. Watching the teams work together as driver and
crew for the short time they were out made Pete and I (Doug) were very proud of the skills and
confidence displayed after several years of training. We are now confident our IRB afterhours
members are trained and equipped for whatever conditions they may face. The public should also be
pleased as it is these skills that will save a life when it really counts. (Below: Tom Rees, driver &
Andrew Selosse crew).
Such conditions are certainly not for the faith hearted.
Love always,
The IRB team crew!
The 2011/12 season has been another enjoyable season for all boaties at Longy. This season the
club had a number of crews including U23 crews, open girls and reserve men, not to forget our Vets
crew who continue to impress. The crews have trained hard whilst attending to their patrolling duties
and assisting the club in other areas.
George Bass Surf Boat Marathon – 2012, written by Bruce Gaal
Three decades ago a group of Longy members
rowed in this marathon. Almost 200 kms from
Batemans Bay to Eden on the NSW south coast.
They had no reserves, just the 4 rowers. 7 races
over 7 days. 2 years ago Longy entered again but
this time with a team of 9 people with an IRB for
support and this year Longy had two teams with
20 people and 2 IRBs for support.
For most members there was long training
sessions but closer to the event the tasks
increased to ensure food, 1 st Aid, tents, cooking,
boats, trailers, IRBs, engines, kit, transport and
finance were all organised. The logistics of such a
large undertaking is a nightmare but everyone
pitches in or it doesn’t work.
Day 1 started on the 31 st December, 2012 with
both crews rowing from Batemans Bay with a nice
nor easter racing to Moruya Heads. All good until
the mixed crew’s support IRB failed to turn up for
a change after half an hour! Pete, Graham, Gus
and Digsley face the daunting prospect of having
to complete the remaining 30 km’s without
change. Racing became surviving as the effort
and exhaustion after the next few hours caused
cramping and fatigue, made worse when a
turning buoy was missed and the crew had to
turn around to row upwind a couple of km’s to
avoid DQ. Meanwhile the women in the broken
duck were left adrift behind the fleet with no help
and no radio coverage. Fortunately a local
clubbie investigated and arranged a tow. The
men’s crew were going great guns until their support duck also broke down 40 minutes from the
finish. That afternoon Digsley’s mobile workshop opened for business, and with Pearso’s help, the
two were able to get both motors operational, and the engines didn’t falter again.
38!

Day 2 was a shorter 1.5 hour race of only 19 kms from Moruya Heads to Tuross Heads again in
sunny conditions. The men’s team missed out on second by only a couple of boat lengths and the
women finally complete a couple of stages in the mixed crew. The rising swell made landing tricky
with the men’s sweep scoring 9.5 on the exit during the wave in. The shorter race enabled enough
energy for the entire cast to perform in ‘Red Faces’ at the local club, with a clever skit authored by
Gus.
Day 3 was from Tuross Heads to Narooma a distance of 22kms but the winds overnight had
increased the wave height making the way out to the start line tricky. The mixed crew almost made it
out when a big wave drove them backwards. It took all hands to stop the boat being washed back
onto the rocks.
Day 4 had good conditions which helped us in this leg from Narooma to Bermagui and both teams
did well. The men’s crew went stroke for stroke with Kiama for the last 1.5kms and lost be a nose.
It’s tough to race for 2 hours and lose by such a small margin.Apart from Bermagui’s natural beauty
the team appreciated the ability to leave the boats on the beach just over the dune from the tents
and not have to deal with trailers and travelling.
Day 5. After a large storm during the night our fears were unfounded as dawn revealed calm seas
with no breeze for the longest leg from Bermagui to Tathra. The mixed crew did well taking about 4
hours to complete the race. The ducks were fully laden with 4 reserve rowers and additional fuel and
thankfully didn’t falter.
Day 6. A stiff southerly breeze made the 26km leg from Bermagui to Tathra one of the hardest. The
constant spray and wind made the race longer and also prevented recovery in the ducks, causing
increased fatigue. The men’s crew were leading behind the A.I.S. for the last 5kms but Torquay
snuck past with 1.5km to go. The mixed crew was an all male affair and struggled gamely for the
entire effort.
Day 7 was the last race a short 18kms between Tathra and Eden with a nice nor easter again.
Hands are taped and sunscreen applied for the last time as the teams prepare for the last session of
hurt.At the 7km mark off the Pambula headland, sweeps had to make a decision. There was a gap in
the rock shelf that would take hundreds of metres off the course length if there was enough water to
39!

ow through. It looked deep enough and the men’s crewed lined up. Just as the boat was about to
enter the passage, the swell built up behind the boat, sucking up water out of the passage. Larger
rocks became exposed and it looked to have been a seriously bad decision. We held our breath as
we heard the boat slide along some rocks but thankfully without a hit. Then, at the passage’s exit,
oars were quickly brought in as we then had to negotiate past a twin-engine support boat stuck on
rocks. A nightmare. The men’s crew battled with the Gong over the last 5kms but again were
relegated to third.
Pictured above, from right to left (bottom row first);
Walling, Tim Gunns, Andrew Dummett, Bridget Dean, Chris Diggins, Chris Hipsley, Graeme Burns,
Alex Hamilton, Rob Pearson, Angus Vowell, Bruce Gaal, Jason Benn, Kurt Uebergang.
Both teams celebrated the end of the event on Eden’s beach with the wonderful support crew, happy
to have finished the enormous challenge unbowed. Later in the afternoon we pick up some cheques
to help repay the Club for it’s support and we continue to replenish our lost fluids, still grateful to
have made it safety through the ordeal. Thanks to Pete Selosse who at short notice spent
considerable time working on IRB engines to get them sea worthy to the best of his ability with a
larger support boat not being able to be obtained. Also thanks to Doug Lucas who again only days
before the crews departed ran an IRB Crewman course for 6 rowers who needed their crewman’s
award to be covered by insurance and allowed to enter an IRB under SLSNSW policy. These
members will now also be able to assist on patrols with this new award.
Life after the Bass written by Alice Clarke
With barely time to recover from the George Bass
Marathon the Ikunas and the newly formed Those
Other Guys (TOGs) competed in the under 23’s in
Young Guns at Collaroy. Ed, Matt, Cal and Mitch
went well for first timers and will become a serious
threat as their surf skills improve and they mature and
strengthen for next season. The Ikunas were going
well until a dud alley denied them of a place in the
final.
Manly was the next big challenge and the big surf
made it very testing. The high standard of competition
from all over Australia made it even tougher. The Vets, Ladies, Chicks and TOG’s struggled in the
conditions, bowing out in the round robin. The Ikunas raced hard in both 23’s and A’s and reached
Sunday in the 23’s. Their outstanding effort rewarded the Ikunas with a 3rd place in the final!
The Freshwater carnival began differently with a marathon row from Shelly Beach to Freshwater.
The Chicks and the Ladies crew came 1st and 2nd in the women’s division and the Ikunas were
close behind the big pack of A crews at the ‘only’ turning buoy off Freshwater beach.
Understandably, the local boardriders looked somewhat confused as 30 or so boats suddenly
appeared and headed shoreward. The Vets, Ladies, Chicks, Ikunas and TOG’s all flew the Club
colours that day but to no avail.
The Australian Surf Rowers League carnival was held at Stockton in Melbourne like weather. Crews
were subjected to wind, rain, heat and then more rain before it finally cleared on Sunday. Again the
competition was only the best from all states except N.T. The Vets, Ladies, Chicks and TOG’s
dipped out in the round robin with only the Ikunas making it through the Friday and Saturday races.
The Ikunas powered through 6 races (and 2 A’s) to reach the semi finals, only to line up against
what looked like an Australian final. After a terrific start all 6 boats turned together at the buoys. The
difference coming into the wave area was barely ½ a boat length between all crews, with Longy
dipping out in the end. A sad end to a magnificent effort.
41!

Sadly the team did suffer some loses though, namely our Doctor (Vet really) Alex Hamilton who’s
now working closer to the Antarctic (Melbourne), Matt Russell-Jones, unkindly dubbed The
Handbrake by his ‘mates’ is seeking fortune over fame in W. A at the mines, Tim Gunns helping tree
huggers in north Queensland, Kurt Uebergang traded the 4WD for a big mortgage, Angus Vowell
collecting jokes and stories in Asia, Graham Burns now playing with camels n sand and temporarily
Pearso, who left a dent in the bitumen with his elbow. Alas the ITF’s and the Mongrels are crews no
more.
This year the Branch Championships were held at Narrabeen beach with several crews attending.
The pick of the crews being the Ikuna’s who managed 3 rd in the under 23s division. At state the
crews were again forced to travel to Kingscliff beach in far North NSW. Again all crews rowed hard in
rather flat conditions. Unfortunately the Ikuna’s didn’t manage to make the final as expected going
out in the semis and it was left to the Vets crew to show their dominance in their age category 240’s
winning the NSW Championships in that field.
This year the Australian Champs returned to Kurrawa Beach. The campaign kicked off with the
masters events with the every trustworthy Longy Vets in the >240 years (age of the 4 rowers)
division. Conditions were challenging to say the least and while they often led the field out to sea we
were buried by a few monster waves, backshooting and rolling the boat in their first race,
reassembled it and still rowed into 4 th position. Their luck held out and they just scraped through to
the final. The god of surf was a little kinder in the final and the 3 leading boats turned almost
simultaneously, South Maroubra snuck away a little on the trip home but the Longy boys found a
little extra horsepower to row back into medal contention. As they crossed the line the almighty
Bruce was still yelling for more and no one knew the result. A few minutes later the PA sparked to
life with the news South Maroubra 3 rd , Southport SA 2 nd , Long Reef GOLD!!!
The next crew to take the challenge was our reserve grade
crew (combined men & women). The conditions were
extremely challenging and despite their best endeavors they
were unable to successfully negotiate the back break. That
afternoon boat competition was suspended due to the loss of
Matthew Barclay during his board race. The next day racing
was suspended due to this unfortunate incident.
With the support of the Barclay family competition resumed at
Kirra with near perfect conditions Race one and 1 st place to
the chicks! Race 2 and another solid performance to progress
to round 3. Race 3, not so lucky! With the swells rolling in and
we tried to take our chances on the back break but end up
backshooting down the wave with a boat full.
Saturday and so much racing needed to be done to make up
for the lost time! Saturday saw the Ikunas hit the ground
running. Absolute cut throat racing – some of the best racing
all week. The boys had the boat flying and progressed
42!

through to the quarter finals eliminating arch rivals Dee Why in a very tight race! (a very sweet
victory!). On Sunday the Ikunas waited and waited for their turn to row. Finally, they got off to a great
start in a very fast semi final, all crews very close at the turn, they needed a little something to push
them into the top 3 to go through to the final… sadly that something didn’t come and the Longy
boaties campaign for 2012 came to a close. A big congratulations to the Ikunas in their final
season of U23s and rightly names Longy Crew of the Year at the Annual Dinner.
Long Reef Crew heads to 60 th Diamond Jubilee. !
In February 2012 one of the Long Reef SLSC Surf Boat crews replied to an SLSA circular to be one
of 9 crews to participate in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee River Pageant.
The crew consisting of Graeme
Burns, Kurt Uebergang, Rob
Pearson and Alex Hamilton were
selected to attend the event. On
Sunday 3rd June the crew joined
1000 other boats and vessels and
rowed 11km down the famous
London Themes. One might ask how
did the crew get a surfboat all the
way to London. The boat they rowed
was supplied by the UK Surf Boat
Rowers League and branded with
'Australia Unlimited' with organisers
not allowing Long Reef to be printed
on the boat due to sponsorship
contracts.
On Monday 4th June the crew put on their best suits, polished their shoes and combed their hair to
join the Governor General of Australia Quentin Bryce and the High Commissioner for Australia His
Excellency Mr John Dauth for morning tea with other participants from Australia. A once in a lifetime
event and trip for each of these guys.
Well done to all rowers this season. It has been tough, but you have all pulled through to work
together and help out. A big thank you to our sponsors the Arthouse Hotel, NAB and Stuarts Blinds
for their generous contributions to a worthy cause. We are very appreciative and hope our
friendships can continue for seasons to come.!
Thank you also to the tireless work of our sweeps, towing boats left, right and centre. For those who
tinker away on boats and trailers we are very grateful!
Comprising Board of Sponsorship & Marketing: Director of Sponsorship and Marketing, Executive
Director, Sponsorship Manager and 3 Fundraising Officers.
Sponsorship in any walk of life is never easy, and the same applies to Long Reef SLSC, but when
the GFC hit, it became even harder to attract contributions. Given the challenging conditions to
attract sponsorship and donations the Club has actively pursued additional revenue streams to help
fund the things we want and need to do as a Club, with the primary focus being on running more
events. In previous seasons the club ran a very successful Fenn Cup in conjunction with
OceanPaddler a local business. Unfortunately after a lot of hard work over 2 seasons to start the
series OceanPaddler decided to team up with Collaroy SLSC this season who offered a more
economical solution. This meant to Long Reef a reduction in significant funds from running this
event, which was a shame. The club was also un-successful in its quest to host a boat carnival has it
had in previous seasons. This left only a small number of minor sponsors supporting club activities
and our annual swim.
Whilst as a club we have lost several long-term sponsors including Winning Appliances and Dee
Why Automotive who’s support over the years has been tremendous we have been fortunate
enough to find another two smaller sponsors to assist with club activities. Jess Foran held some
initial discussions with National Australia Bank and this resulted in NAB at Dee Why becoming a club
sponsor donating $2000 for this season with the potential for more financial contributions should
members be interested in signing over their loans to NAB.
Alan Garrett (Stu’s dad) of Stuart Blinds at Manly has also very kindly bought a new set of oars to
help the crews and to replace some of the aging equipment.
We also thank our continued support from existing
sponsors including: Dee Why RSL who provide weekly
money through the Cash Housie Program, Spank
Swimwear who provide all swim wear at a discounted rate
to allow the club to make some money from sales, Wade
Oldham Finance for support of the Nippers water safety
vests, MEGA who have been a long term sponsor for club
oxygen and related equipment and the Arthouse Hotel
who give some money towards the rowing program.
Paddle for a Cause - Adam L’Green and Angus
Vowell
During October and November two members, Adam
L’Green and Angus Vowell decided to take some initiative
and looked to have an adventure whilst trying to raise some
money for the club. The pair set out to paddle on rescue
46!

oards from Stockton Beach (Newcastle)
to Sydney some 110 km over four days.
Day 1 was intended from Stockton Beach
to Catherine Hill Bay 30.685km, Day 2
from Catherine Hill Bay to Shelly Beach
(just south of The Entrance) 29.132km,
Day 3 from Shelly Beach to Palm Beach
29.701km and Day 4 Palm Beach to Long
Reef 19.567km.
During the week and each weekend the
boys would set out with camel packs and
travelled north or south for 5-10km in
preparation for the big event. The guys left Stockton on Thursday 15 th November. Club members
and friends got behind their paddle and donated $5700 to the cause. Conditions over the first two
days were challenging with a southly swell and wind. The boys ended up pulling the pin during the
second day leg at Norah Head due to conditions, and a shark sighting causing the boys to get a lift
back to the beach in their support boat being about 18 km short of their daily goal to get to Shelly
beach. The decision was made to continue to drive south and start day 3 from Shelly Beach and
continue their journey now with a more favourable north easterly breeze behind them allowing them
to complete their last two legs back to Long Reef beach without incident. Upon completing the event
both guys were excited about their adventure whilst it was hard going they reflect with fond
memories whilst raising a great pile of cash to contribute towards SLS activities. Gus and Adam
would like to thank their great support team both on and off the water including Matt Martin and Phil
Martin (support boat) and on land Peter L'Green and Charles Vowell.
“Tour of Buoys” Ocean Swim - 26 TH February 2012, written by Seamus Redmond
It is always a nervous moment when you wake up on the da y of the ocean swim, particularly when
its 5.00am,still dark, and you have no indication of what the weather gods will unleash upon you on
this day. Times have changed and a lot of swimmers maker the decision to swim or not, on the day,
which makes it doubly difficult to determine or forecast the final numbers one can expect for the
swim. Still we were reasonably confident since a lot of effort had gone into the marketing of the 2012
“Tour Of Buoys”, ranging from the traditional windscreen flyers at other clubs swims, with Doug the
marketing pirate new advertising using fridge magnets that are so handy to apply to parked cars at
swims and flirting with council by laws and nailing large posters about the swim, on the poles around
the Bilgola bends, very innovative.
All in all we advertised ourselves at 6 different swims travelling up and down the peninsula (thanks
Tony Jackson and cadets), and across to North Bondi for their swim which is a week before ours
(thank you North Bondi SLSC for your help yet again this year). So the question was would all this
effort by a golden few result in a bumper crop of swimmers, we wouldn’t know until the weather
made itself known to us.
It didn’t start well , with rain falling as we opened up the doors to the clubhouse at 5.15am, and it had
the distinct “Gloomy” feeling to it, and the lighter it became, the sky’s didn’t brighten. Still we had
47!

around 350 swimmers preregistered and that gave us hope of hitting the 500 mark, and get close or
even pass the 535 swimmers from our 2011 swim.
As the helpers and volunteers started to arrive, things started to improve, the rain stopped, all the
planning and arrangements started to kick into place, and stuff was happening everywhere. Smokey
was tuning up the BBQ like a 12 string, Trish was organising the registration team with military
precision, and Pete and Jim were blowing up things so they could float on water.!
And then they came!! Firstly it was more and more volunteers, which was a justifiably proud moment
after the weeks of cajoling, enticing and begging, paid of in spades. Then came the swimmers, even
though it was cloudy, the sea has just a small swell, and looked particularly inviting to those who
enjoy the pleasantries of an ocean swim. So we were under way, the clubhouse was heaving with
people, form filling, the kitchen was a scene of manic activity with the “ Boaty Girls” attacking the fruit
platters with frenzied fervour, and Jemma and Robert were working the coffee machine like their
lives depended upon it.
The first race was set for 9.30am which was the 1 km swim and for that we had just 3
categories,U15,15-45,O45.When we first started the ocean swim 8 years ago, it was just a single
2km race, but with the introduction of the 1km swim 3 years ago, it has grown in popularity. This year
we ended up with 208 swimmers taking part made up of 119 male and 89 female swimmers.
Doug started them all in one wave, and then they were under the watchful eye of Jeremy, who had
the water safety under his name. Thankfully we had a lot of help in this area, with more than enough
volunteers for board riders, Pete Jim and a full compliment of 6 ducks, plus Margaret Pearson
leading the front swimmers in her ski paddle.
The swimmers scorched around the 1 km triangular course with the fastest times recorded as:
• Male Peter Thiel (15-45 ) 10.18 mins
• Female Nicola Stirton (15-45) 10.46mins
All finishers were greeted with enthusiastic applause from family and well wishers, and they were all
treated to our famous fruit platters
on the beach and bottles of cold
spring water to wash away the salty
taste of the sea water. The timing
system was recording beautifully
while Kylie, Aimee and Seamus
were backing up with the old
fashioned manually marking system.
Next it was the main event, the 2 km
swim, and at the close of registration
we had 309 swimmers ready for the
10.30 am start time. This was made
up of 205 male and 104 female
swimmers, in 10 different categories,
set off in 3 waves with the first wave
48!

starting at 10.30am, wave 2 at 10.35am and wave 3 at
10.40am. Again Doug got them off to a clean start, and
away they went!
Again they swam the triangular course, but this time with
a longer seaward leg, that took the swimmers out over
the reef, towards the headland. Fastest swimmer this
time was a young guy in the U16 category, whilst the
fastest female was in the 50-54 category, with the results
as follows:
• Male Lachlan Bruce (U16) 22.30 mins
• Female Jenny Whiteley (50-54) 25.16 mins
As the rest of the field made their way in, we set about
getting ready for our newest additional attraction, being
the “Dash for Cash”. In this race, any swimmer from the
1km and 2 km swim can enter, they swim out 200
meters form shore, wait for the signal then swim as fast
as they can, race up the beach and pick up the Nipper
flag with $100 tapped to it. There was also a random pick where one of the swimmers got a $50
random cash prize, which just added to the popularity of this event. Two races were held, one male,
one female, and approximately 40 swimmers entered, which was a great fun activity.
So, after all this was completed and the packing up done, it was time to reflect on another swim day.
We had about 100 club volunteers throughout the day, 517 swimmers and we made after costs
about $8,000 profit for the club. It therefore only remains to thank everyone for volunteering, and
putting in a mighty effort on the day, I do realise I have mentioned a few names, but there were
many more who deserve accolades, and the best part of it all was that we worked, laughed and
enjoyed the whole day as a team, the Longy Team, What a day!!
16.%62nd%Annual%Dinner%–%Harbord%Diggers%
This year after several seasons Richard Van Weeren, Scott McLachlan Seamus Redmond
organising the annual dinner the trio elected to hang up their hats. Step in the lovely Lucy Redmond
who took charge of proceedings with Jeremy acting as MC in a trial run before he shared the role
with Shannon Job at the Branch MOC night.
Numbers this year were significantly down with unfortunately only 50 club members attending the
dinner. This year Lucy looked to do something different with a pre-optional lawn bowls tournament.
There was a lot of team rivalry with the team ‘Examiners’ of Ian Wallace, Lachlan Gadd and Doug
showing after mixing all season with many older examiners their skills must have rubbed off going
through 3 matches against various teams un-defeated. So determined to continue the last match
was played in the dark using a torch to see the jack.
All guests then walked upstairs to
the function room of Harbord
Diggers with South Curl Curl
SLSC sharing the room next to us.
Lucy did a fantastic job laying out
the room for what was an intimate
night. Highlights included Dave
McIntosh being presented a
plague to be displayed at the club
with a copy of his Medal of the
Order of Australia for services to
the community and Ross
Matthews presented with his 50
year patrol pin. Ian Wallace and
Jeremy then presented all the
educational certificates for those
members in attendance who had
achieved educational awards
throughout the season.
Sincere thanks Lucy for organising the night which was enjoyed by all in attendance.
17.%Long%Ruffians%Associations%Report%
It’s been a quiet front on the Long Ruffians side of the club this season with not much involvement in
club activities. At the commencement of the season we did see a large role up of members with 120
members in attendance for the clubs 62 nd AGM. (Photo below, Peter Selosse, Ross Matthews, Giff
Brown and Bob Galmes). Currently the old boys are engaged in writing the first 20 years of the club
history. This includes various areas of research including speaking with the remaining founding
members (Giff Brown), obtaining information from John Freedman about the clubs former Wallabies,
Tony Frost writing the R & R history, George Metcalfe writing recollections of the 1968 New Zealand
tour and Bob Galmes competing a club membership list. Whilst this is being completed other more
recent historical items have been researched and places on the club website for members
enjoyment. Such include a Committee List dating back to 1950, Club award winner’s, Australian
honours, list of Examiners and Assessors and of great interest each of the Annual Reports from
1950 to 2012. These have been scanned and placed electronically on the website to ensure this
valuable history is lost.
Vale - Passing of David Lawson (1960’s era)
Members were saddened by the news of the passing of Dave Lawson (Friday 29/7/2011). Dave
joined the club in the 1960’s living in Collaroy. Dave was a member of the club for a number of years
and was the Chief Instructor in 1963/64. Dave married his wife Robin who became involved with the
club as a member of the Women’s Auxiliary assisting in the organisation of the club’s monthly
functions. Following their marriage Robin and Dave moved to Queensland. Their pair were married
for 41 happy and memorable years. We pass on our sincere sorrow to the Lawson faimily.
Vale – Passing of Bill Herron (late 1950’s era)
Members were saddened after receiving a phone call from Henry Herron about the death of his
brother. Bill joined Long Reef in 1958 doing his Bronze Medallion under the instruction of Giff Brown.
Giff recalls Bill being apart of what was the worst ever Bronze Squad the club had instructed at that
time with only 2 in the squad being able to March in time. Giff states though after great commitment
and 6 weeks of training the squad all got through being proficient in the belt and reel to obtain their
Bronze and join Long Reef patrols. Bill and Giff remained friends for many years to come from that
date and studied together, later working in the same profession, playing rugby and keeping in
regular contact until over coffee and a chat until Bills death.
18.%Audited%Financial%Statements%
The 2011/2012 financial year shows another small overall increase in Long Reef SLSC’s financial
position in cash reserves which is pleasing considering the amount of work undertaken on the
clubhouse through minor renovations and a significant decline in sponsorship. In addition the club
also lost selection of the SNB Boat carnival and was overlooked to continue as the host of the Fenn
Cup which is disappointing.
The main source of income continues to be membership subscriptions with a significant lack of
commercial activities (only hall hire) and declining sponsorship opportunities. Members are strongly
encouraged to look for additional sponsorship opportunities for season 2012/13.
In season 2012/13 the club has made application to run one of the Ocean Series paddle races as
well as continuing to run the Tour of the Buoys Ocean Swim however the budget will have to be tight
in order for the club to not run at a loss.
21.%Membership%List%/%Registrar%Report!
Please find our 2011/12 membership records. Such records are maintained by the club registrar.
This season Dail Neville maintained the junior records however no member was prepared to stand
for the position of club registrar. The role is an important one ensuring our members details are
maintained in surfguard and all transfers are processed. This has been made easier in recent years
with on-line registrations slowly doing away with membership forms. Doug has completed the role
this season but hopefully there is somebody in the club prepared to take on the position for season
