PRESIDENT'S REPORT
It makes me very proud 10 present our 52 nd Annual report. This is something I thought I'd
never have 10 do, but 1 am pleased to be doing il.
Once again Ihis season was a busy one for us with some 3900 hours spent on patrol or
training for patrol duties. and approximately 800 hours spent on administration. SLS NSW
have calculated dollar values for the various categories. Using those val ucs Long Reefs
contribution comes at approximately $94,000 worth of community service. The nine
Waningah Clubs contributed a lotal of approximately $ 1.35 million of community service.
When looking at these figures it is important to take into account the fi nance involved not
only in running each clu b but also the cost in volved of maintaining our club houses. The
Waningah clubs this season spent approx. $388,000 in eith er maintaining th eir club houses or
in capital expenditure on their cl ubhouses. We have been fortunate over recent years and have
not had to spend much at all 011 our club, after having done our last major renovation and
additions some 12 years ago. In comparison. Warringah COllllcil has $ 100,000 in its budget
fo r capital expenditure or general maintenance of the nine Surf Club buildings within in the
Warringah area.
Long Reef this season had 180 senior mcmbers (85 rostered on patrols) and 210 nipper
members. Tt wou ld certainly be an achievement for this club to hit the 100 patrolling member
target, one we should try for next season by continuing to gradually increasing our active
membership. Thi s is now being made easier by having a very strong Nipper program in
operation. So far we have been able to retain the vast majority of Nippers who have become
old enough to advance to our senior ranks.
This season saw record number of junior members. I welcome all of you to our club and hope
you enjoy it for many years. Bruce Gaal was handed the job of introducing our new juniors to
the senior ranks. This is not an easy task but we proved to have Ihe right person on the job to
handle this. However. I would like the '"buddy system" to be more prominent than it is
currently. The "buddy system" sees senior members assigned to junior members just to help
them into the senior ranks.
52nd ANNUAL REPORT & BALANCE SHEET
My thanks also, to Kei th Henry and hi s nipper organising team, for keeping our Nippers keen
and enthusiastic year after year. It is also an achievement when you have parents knocking on
the door wanting their children in vo lved with our nipper program.
The club in general is on a very sound footing. Renewed enthusiasm in the managemenl
proved to be the difference thi s season. Our Club Captain Stephen Cox, and the Vice
Captains, Andrew Robson and Doug Lucas, excelled in executing their duties this season.
These three members are major assets to this club and we all owe them a great deal of
gratitude. Stephen, Andrew and Doug all picked up major awards this season and deservedly
so.
To our award winners this season, congratulations, and thank you for your efforts. We only
get out of this club what we put into it, and to be awarded an achievement trophy is an
outstanding effort.
To be nominated for our main awards is an achievement in itself, let alone winning an award.
Somethi ng we haven't done in the past is to announce the nominees for each award.
Personally, I think this is an injustice, so below I have listed all nominees. Where just the
winner is listed then that person was the only nomination.
Also we thank ABB, Vivendi, BP and NSW Sport & Recreation for your involvement in our
The clubs competitors played hard all season. Tom Rees, winner of the Branch Junior Beach
sprint was by far the stand out and congratulations to Tom. We had man y starters in the
Branch Master Championships with several competitors winning medals. Even some of OUf
nipper parents fronted for a run and a swim in the Masters. This is great to see. Perhaps we
can do more than just row boats!
52nd ANNUAL REPORT & BALANCE SHEET
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Congratul ations to ALL. Everyone that did patrols, the Club Captain and Vice Captains, the
Management Committee, the President, the Nipper Parents, the competitors, those who
achieved awards, the Instructors, the HBI 's, the fund raisers and the sponsors.
A huge amount of effort is ex pended to provide a safe beach environment and to be part of a
wonderful community lifestyle that transcends all walks of life, age groups and backgrounds.
The great shame, in the big picture, is that the State Government provides no support for Surf
Li fe Saving and the local Council, through their own financial mismanagement, proposed
changes that would cause Surf Clubs to provide income to the Council for any commercial
activity that would provide some financial independence. LillIe wonder competitive talent
sells itself to the banana benders whose governments actively and financiall y promote Surf
Lifesaving.
That makes OUR efforts to provide the services we do all the more sensational.
For the following season the Board is looking at ways to improve communication, increase
our finances, reduce patrol repetition and make Ollr time at Longy more enjoyable.
Congratulations to ALL.
Bruce Gaal
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Our overall standing with the Branch also improved. Our position improved from 20 th out of
21 clubs last season to 14th this season. It took an overall club effort to achieve th is
improvement, and I personally thank you all.
I wish the club well in its endeavours next season. I have enjoyed my first season as President
and thank all who have helped me. I look forward 10 continuing our progress next season.
The financial report has been prepared for the purpose of fulfilling the requirements of the Associations
financial report to which it relates to any person other than the members, or for any purpose other than that for
which it was prepared.
My audit has been conducted accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. My procedures included
examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the financial report
and the evaluation of significant accounting estimates. These procedures have been undertaken to fo rm an
opinion whether, in all material respects, the financial report is presented fairly in accordance with the
accounting policies described in Note 1 so as to present a view which is consistent with my understanding of
the Association's financial position, and performance as represented by the results of its operations and its cash
flows. These policies do not require the application of all Accounting Standards and other mandatory
However, as a large part of the Club's income is represented by cash from fund raising and functions, I am unable
to confinn as to whether all income has been received and properly recorded in the books of account. My audit
relating to such income Was therefore limited to ensuring that the amounts banked are properly recorded in the
CLUB CAPTAIN'S REPORT
52nd ANNUAL REPORT & BALANCE SHEFr
Congratulations to al l our members, both young and old, for once again keeping the flagged
areas and their immediate environs safe for the public. EVERYBODY deserves a clap on the
back.
Standard of patrols thi s year were high with great many younger members making their
presence felt both in the patrols and in the ranks of the cadets. The normal stalwarts of patrols
keep on patro ll ing which is very heartening to see, shore patrols remain a vital part of our
team , and our new nipper parents and bronze candidates have hit the ground running.
Use of the quad bike this year has helped remove the burden of lugging the gear and boats
over the sand dune and has proved very effective. After all these years we may have that
#%*@sanddunelicked!!!
As is always the case a Cl ub Captain will never last through the season and stay sane without
the support of his Vice captains, in my case Doug Lucas and Andrew Robson. I can safely say
that these two guys were a godsend and helped me inuneasurably. As has been stated on
previous occasions the effort, dedicat.ion and professionalism that these two guys have put in
all year is incredible. Thanks guys.
Finally, I invi te everyone to continue their association with Long Reef next year. Longy and
the people associated wi th it hold a special place in my heart and I look forward to seeing YOLI
there next year!!!
REGISTRAR'S REPORT
Membership is healthy at Long Reef this season. Ni ppers is going from strength to strength.
The training of Water Safety Officers is cru cial and as we recruit more parents to do their
Bronze Medalli on and then act as Water Safety Officers, we can accept more children as
Nippers. We have lSI Nippers registered this season.
Not included in the above numbers are our fourteen year old cadets who are included in the
2S Under 16 members. Bruce Gaal ha s run another great programme for these kids over the
season and I commend him for his effot1s. The most difficult age to keep members is the 16to
18 year old group & this is evidenced by the 10 members we have in this group. Hopefully if
we cominue to run successful programmes we can hold more youngsters as they progress up
10 th is group. Tom Rees. our Junior Captain deserves a special menti on here for hi s
enthusiasm in carrying out the duties of this position.
Shore Surf Li fe Saving continues in strength with 51 Under 16 members & 25 Under 18
members. Congratulations to Nigel Scozzi & his team for another successfu l season with
Long Reef.
Active membership stands at 61, steady overall, with a good & mature base. Other
memberships are 12 Active Reserve, 17 Associate (including Shore staf!), 35 Long Serving
Members. 7 Country members and II Life Members. Another "changing face" of
membership at Long Reef is that we now have 44 Family Membershi ps.
During the season Surf Life Saving New South Wales introduced Complete Patrol Logger, a
database system to be used by all Clubs on line. This resulted in a lot of work to transfer
information across from our own old Q&A database. This has now been completed, but there
are still a number of "bugs" in the CPL. which are slowly being sorted.
My thanks to Helen Van Weeren, Eve Watson, Jynell Mair & Lindy Hardcastle who al l
helped with Nipper registration thi s season and to Cath MacDougall who ably carried out the
role of Treasurer, whi ch made my job much easier. My thanks al so to all members who paid
their fees on time, again making the job easier to do.
This season you wi ll receive new Membership Forms and al so an In vo ice for fees, which are
all generated by the new CPL database. Please fill in any mi ssing information and check your
email address if you have one. If you ha ve a new email address please print it c1early- the old
eyes aren't what they used to be.
CHIEF INSTRUCTOR'S REPORT
What a successful year we've had, with a range of awards being earned by a range of people.
from Cadets to Nipper Parents to existin g Bronze Medallion holders 11! This season. we saw
the completion of 23 Bronze Medallions, 4 Surf Rescue Certi ficates, 3 IRB Dri vers Silver
Medallions, 3 IRB Instructors, 3 Training Officers. 3 Patrol Captains Silver Medallions, 2
Advances Rescue Certificates and 2 Life Support Silver Medallions.
I have been extremel y fortunate during my first season as Chief Instructor, receiving a
significant amount of help on both the training and organisational front from Stephen Cox.
Doug Lucas, Andrew Robson, Chris Arcus and Jason Benn. Without the dedication of these
people, my task would have been a considerable challenge.
Coxy assumed the Chief Instructor role on my behalf for the first couple of months of the
season, whi lst I was unable to dedicate the requisite time. It was a great start to the season.
with 2 squads of Nipper parents successfull y completing their Bronze Medallion. This meant
more water safet y attendants were avai lable for Sunday morning Nippers 11
Our next Bronze squad consisted of 5 brand new members - Peter Crevlin. Ric Eggins. Jarrod
Frowde, Katie Arcus and Paul Rutten. This group completed their training and examinations
in a relatively short period of time over the ChristmaslNew Year Period. The training of this
squ ad was very timely, with the 5 members being slotted into patrols who were struggli ng
with numbers.
Early in the New Year, Doug and Robbo commenced training for a large group of juniors and
cadets, which involved training both Bronze Medallion and Surf Rescue Certificate (S RC).
They managed thi s with ease, successfully training 4 SRC candidates - Kim Waterhouse.
Bronwyn Jones, Kate Rudolph and Samantha PetTY , and 4 Bronze candidates - Doug GaaL
Elisse Marshal , Amanda Gibson and Sarah Fletcher. The successful completion of this squad
meant that Robbo and Doug also earned their Instructors Certificate. Through training a group
of Shore boys. Tom Rees also gained hi s Instructors Certificate.
In tota l, we successfully trained 23 Bronze Medallion candidates, which wi ll in turn have
considerable positi ve impact on patrol numbers and Nipper supervision for future years. The
trai nin g of the SRC candidates is terrific grou nding for the Bronze Medalli on. and I sincerely
hope that the SRC ho lders commence their Bronze Medallion as soon as they are eligible.
21
LONG REEF SLSC INC.
Ha vi ng such a l:J.rgc quantity of new memberships is a great boost to the club, helping
securi ng its longevity.
We al so saw the successful completion of olher awards. Tom Rees, Doug Lucas and Andrew
Robson received their IRS Drivers, which proved to be a considerable benefi t when it came to
training new Bronze Medallion candidates in IR S rescues. Robbo spentlireless hours in the
IRS. both training and driving for exams. His driving was instrumental in the successful
completion of a part 3 exam, which was held in very difficult condit ions.
Congratulations to Eileen and Margaret fo r completing their Life Support, Silver Medall io n,
Club Members earned 43 awards this season, which is a great feat and encouraging for the
future. Congratulations to alt award recipients, and once again, sincere thanks to those who
assisted with the train ing.
As a final note, I would li ke 10 recognise previous years' efforts in building and fostering
relationships with examjners from other Clubs, particularly South Narrabeen. We have
certainly reaped the benefits this year - we were able to find examiners for the 43 awards with
relative ease. It is a reciprocal relationship, with both sides benefiting, and we should continue
to build and strengthen such relationships.
NIPPERS REPORT
Another great season saw Ollr nipper memberships grow from 165 last year to an incredible
205 registrations. We thought a cap of 180 would stretch all of our reserves and withoUllhe
support of man y parents who vol unteer their lime as water safety officers, age group
manage rs and beach assistan ts, the season wou ld have been very difficult indeed. This season
saw Long Reef Nippers taking part in greater numbers at two Junior Branch Carni va ls with
some great results. The nippers season was capped off once again with a fantasti c
presentation day. The followi ng week the 2nd hugely successful Viva Las Longy Fundraising
ni ght was held. It is essential for ongoing success of our nippers program that the parents
additional assistance with water safety and beach events is volunteered each season.
This years christ mas party was held on the 22nd of December, twighlight nippers was held
out a treat to each nipper and afterwards the magician had everyone enthralled (includi ng all
had a great time. A special th ank you to Clarkey for once again ensu ri ng Santa arrived safely.
Club Presentation Day
Presentation day was on the 9 th of March and was a great success and with over 200
presentations it was a big day. The list below has the winners of the handicap results and club
championship. All other chjldren that parti cipated also received an award.
Carnivals
The first branch carniva l of the season at Qucenscliff saw the bi ggest conti ngent of nippers
from Long Reef with a swag of great results. The entire under 8s group parti ci pated
accounti ng for 38 of the 66 entries. Strong showings had many white and blue caps in the
finals, the under 8 girls nag final had five Longy Nippers in it, more than any other club. The
under 12 girls relay team also finished 3 rd .
At the second carnival at Manly towards the end of January the numbers were down due to
the school holidays, however with 38 entries Long Reef was well represented once again.
Long Reef Nippers were in many fina ls and wi ll benefit from the experience gai ned from
competition at this level. Sophie Hardcastle won the first nipper branch medal in the under 8
flags, coming 3 m and made it into three fina ls in both call1i vals. Our strong showing took
many by surprise, including the kids themselves. Hopefully next year we can continue to
participate in branch carnivals in greater numbers and still maintain the Long Reef relaxed
attitude to competition. The si deshow sl ide and Johnny Bravo give aways on the promenade
will make it a day to remember for most of the nippers who attended.
Many thanks to Phil Reeves who did a great job again this year for his weekly input as the
organi ser of the handicap and championship pointscores. Phil's carnival assistance, ordering
and presentation of the annual awards.
Both days had fa ntastic weather and perfect surf conditions for kids. The age group managers
for each group were terrific, assist ing each child for their event and location, thanks everyone.
My special lh anks to Neil Ainsworth and Will Hardcastl e for their great effo rts in setting up
the beach and organiSing the carnival days.
We will continue to enter in to 2 branch carnivals per season in December and Jan uary. We
will need to lodge the entries early and request confirmation of ent ries from the beginning of
the season.

JUNIOR CAPTAINS REPORT
52nd ANNUAL REI'ORT & BA LANCE SHEET
Well, another season has slipped away into the hi story of Long Reef. The 'Junior' section of
the Club continues to produce milestones. Today junior members are a separate squad,
independent of the Nipper organisation. The Rookie (U 16) program is another recent addition
to the club, beginning in the 99/00 season, before which the advanci ng nippers had no
program for themselves. It has taken till now for Long Reef to have a reasonable turnout in
numbers in fact there has been an eight-fold increase. This season Long Reef had 48
candidates rangi ng from ages of 14 to 18 in comparison to the 6 cand idates in the 99/00
season.
During the season Sarah Fletcher represented Long Reef in the annual Dee Why swim and
won the opens women event by a clear margin. Congratulations go to her. Also Doug Gaal
and I competed in the Branch carnival at Manly in events such as the swim, board, sprint and
flags. The day was successfu l in that the representation remjnded the Branch and other
competitor beaches that Long Reef cannot be discounted.
A statisti c, which shows how important the j unior section of the Club is, comes from the Surf
Lifesavin g organi sation. The records show th at each season 90% of all U14 - UI8 candidates
leave the organi sation. Now we have foc ussed on thi s area and had some success, we at Long
reef can differ from the average and excel. As the junior organisation is so new to the club, it
is not set in its ways, therefore ideas and experiences are greatly appreciated. Any and all
views should be voiced, for the good of the club. Ju niors stay with the club for different
reasons, but few really real ise that not everybody has to be an athlete. There are man y other
paths of 0pp0l1unity available such as, instruction, patrolling. social event organising and so
on .. It is a conUllUnity based interest group.
We hope that the junior program wi ll, in perhaps another season, become a major source and
strength to the club, producing numerous patrolling members. Already thj s season we had two
squads of instruction. Surf Rescue Certificate and the Bronze Medallion. Congratulations go
to those who passed.
Continuing thi s deve lopment theme, Long Reef now has a strong organisationaJ link through
the Branch Youth Panel. It meets every month to di scuss issues of youth relations. such as
why the '90% drop out' rate, how \0 make SLS more inviting and minor th ings such as exam
procedure. Also the panel is in charge of Rookie leadership camps that run in the holidays. Of
value is the fact that these can also lead to Du ke of Edinburgh Awards. The Youth Panel itself
is only a recent introduction, so it also needs nurturing and attention. I hope Long Reef will
continue to be represented at this Panel in the future an d have its views heard even though it is
one of the smaller clubs in the Branch.
As always the Shore school continued its activity record. bringi ng in 26 passes in the Bronze
Medallion. 26 passes in SRC (Surf Rescue CeI1jficate), 12 passes in ARC (Advanced
Resuscitation Certificate), 8 passes in TOC (Training Officer Certificate), and 5 IRB passes.
Medals wcre won from Branch to Nationals, rangin g fro m surfing to sprints to R&R.
Unfortunately the competitors were not always representin g Long Reef. I hope in the future
th at we can build the non-Shore junior members to a posi tion where they can match the size,
standard and interest of the Shore members. Thi s can only be achieved through the conLinuing
interest and dedication of the Senior and more ex perienced members of the club. Their help
this yeaf has been most appreciated. Thankyou to Bruce Gaa!. Doug Lucas, Andrew Robson,
Kri stic Thomas, Stephen and Kathryn Cox for your time and effort this season. to all those I
have unintentionally failed to menti on and also to the juniors themselves. whose enthusiasm
will ensure a bright future.
Ju st a quick note to the membership to thank them for their attendance at the various fun ctions
throughout the season. They were mostly well attended and we feel th at is where the hemt and
soul of the club is reflected.
We have enjoyed making each occasion first class and special.
Th e BBQ and beer afternoons were infrequent but a great way to relax . Perhaps we should
have them on a more regular basis. The gaming ni ght was fantastic and a great financ ial
success. The annual dinner was fun and a bit different, as it shoul d be each year. However if
you can remember back that far the Christmas cocktail party was bcller attended than it has
been in years and probably ensured its success next year with the performance of the
BOA T CAPTAIN'S REPORT
The season kicked off with a high degree of enthusiasm largely thanks to Stephen Cox (Coxy)
who was keen to follow on from hi s spectacular 4th round exit in the 200 1 national
championships, and see if he could add any more spectacular boalie scars to his coll ection
(how many sweeps can say thei r wife has a scar above her eyebrow which required 5 stiches
care of a Longy surfboat).
52nd ANNUAL REPORT & BAL4.NCE SHEET
Naturally the old boys maintained thei r desire for boatie immortality and it was great to see
Mal MacCormick, Dave Sams, Bruce Gaal and Peter Kin sey on the water again ("Age shall
never weary us").
----------
It was a pleasure to seen a new band of boaties enj oying time on the end of an oar. Simon
Kinsey found his calling stroking the open men's I$t reserve crew along wi th the famil iar
faces of Brad Anderson (Kenn y-returned from the Refo's of yesteryear), Larry and Titta. Kath
Cox grabbed herself a powerful engine room in Andrew Robson (Robbo) and Doug Lucas
while Hamish McMichael followed in Nude's footsteps at the pointy end of the boat.
Some noteworthy exceptions from the boatie contingent for the season were
~ Nudist - some excuse about opening Sydney's newest and most remarkable Pub
as the licence of the Art House
~ Cath Dougall - a relaxed season rowing masters with another friendl y club.
~ JB - taking time out to spend with Eileen and their son Nicholas
~ Dougall - taking up boatie photography
~ Adam - European touring duties
Hopefully these are all just minor di sturbances and these individuals will be back for
200212003. However there is a solid rumour that Eileen will fill in for JB if he does not cl aim
a seat early!.
Competition commenced with some rather dubious electrical repairs followed by equally
dubious navigation (thanks Larry) so uth of the big coat hanger. Finally the latest Kinsey
boatie was on the start line at Wanda, Guns Up, Racing ... well actuall y lying with ones head
in the boltom of the boat with legs fl ailing in the air. .. a lesson well learnt and followed up
with a fine row to place third, progressing to win the next round and secure a place in the semi
final.
While it is often said that a Longy boat shouldn' t cross any bridge (apart from one spanning
Narrabeen lagoon!) to altend a carnival the Longy Boys showed a few more highly
credentialed crews the finer points of rowing.
There was little else to report prior to Christmas apart from one boatie, who shall remain
nameless, proving that any form of cross training can seriously damage you prospects for the
season ( it was probably time for lhal second knee reconstruction anyway! ). The other
noteworthy event was Hamish being captured south of the bridge by a lovely young lady and
handing over his seat 10 Robbo's brother, Paul (welcome another Longy Boati e! ).
An early highlight of the true competition season was the Manly carnival which turned on
some of the most spectacular boat rowing seen for many years. One oarsman, on hearing that
the swell was up, knocked back the offer of a weekends skiing in the French Alps to make it
back in time for the carnival!.
He was not disappointed as two to three metre swells pounding imo the sandbar about 150
metres from shore providing a formidable challenge, Coxy calmly took Titta's crew out for a
warm-up which lasted a little longer than planned as each of the crew members spem a lazy
20 minutes swimming back to shore in a rip with an oar! . As the tide dropped things became
more challenging on the back break and despite many powerful attempts, Hughie. the God of
surf, sent most crews home a little the worse for wear. Longy was no exception ..
The Manly call1i vai does however require a special mention for the Longy lRB crews who
provided almost all the water safet y in the boatie area for the event - a magnificent display of
world class rescue and recovery services. I would challenge any other club or "professional"
lifeguard service to come even close to thi s performance.
The Longy Chick' s crew regained some international navour for the season with Karen
Brackstone stealing Jill's stroke seat, Jill in 2nd stroke along wi th Dan and Raechel Kinsey.
The next bi g event was the Branch Championships at Bil go la. The format was a break with
tradition and he ld as a boalie on ly event which was rather disa ppointing as it is ni ce 10 be able
to pass comment at the less noble pursuits and the Chicks always seem 10 enjoy the ski
paddlers (but only above the waist!).
A new 120's crew was Formed for lhe day with JB. Kenny, myself and Tittll. a flying start had
all the other crews wonderi ng exactly why they had bothered to get out of bed but Hughie
LONG REEF SLSC INC.
decided that the Longy lads needed a proper workout for their first ever row as a crew. Neck a
neck all the way with a little wave for the Manly boys to steal viclOry - Silver for the Reef.
The trustworthy old boys collected Gold to add 10 the every expanding trophy cabinet, and
both reserve crews and the chicks enjoyed a solid days boat racing.
State Championships found the boaties huddling alongside the boat as the southerl y blew and
squalls of rain hammered down at Blacksmiths Beach. Swansea Belmont - th is was however
a pleasant change from being stuck in an air conditioned box starri ng blankly at a Pc.
Thursdays competition say the old boys add Bronze 10 the cabinet as a warmup for Fridays
Reserve grade competition. An early start saw three Longy men's crews in aClion. Cath Cox's
reserve grade crew's comfortable 2 nd placing in the first round had many crews with all men
wondering whether to trade their stroke in for a boatie chick as thi s configuration obviously
made you row faster. This was obviously the explanation, as the crew also had to overcome
an unfit bowman rowing with only one good knee!.
52nli ANNUAL REPORT & BALANCE SHEET
steroid munching ni ghtcl ub bouncers. Simon Kinsey discovered new ta lents thanks to the
careful tutorship of Brakkers at the Casino and has now been allocated an official Longy
Name ~ everyone please welcome BI G T IME.
Back in the social arena Doug Lucas was willing to take on an interesting challenge, once
again with the careful tutorship of the Longy Boatie Chicks. This quest involved an item of
clothing being ident ified and then Doug being sent out to do whatever it took to recover the
item and return wearing it. T ight fitting items of female clothing were the most common
challenge and Doug's performance was nothing short of amazing - super effort from the
Longy tribe which once again led the charge and established new boundaries for socially
acceptable behaviour!
Sweeps for the season were Ross Jenkins, Coxy, Ian Waterhouse and occasional guest
appearances from Jas Benn. If any Club Member can find Ross a new job for 2002/3 based a
liule closer to the Reef than China us boaties will be vcry grateful!
Coxy also had to trade in hi s relaxing position at the back of the boat and remember exactly
how long a race was hanging on the end of an oar to fill in for Titta who had embarked on a
radical weight loss programme care of a mystery virus.
The Longy chicks delivered the best performance for the day making it to the quarterfin als
prior to enjoying a well earned beverage with the rest of the crews.
The Australian Championships were held once again althe abominable Kurrawa. It is a great
shame that the current generation of boaties is being subjected to this ongoing monotonous
tonure on one of the most unfair and uninteresting stretches of the Australian coastline. OK
I've said my piece and hopefully I will live and be rowing long enough to once again enjoy
touring to championship events all over our magnificent country.
The old boys travelled north with high hopes of defending their National Championship in the
200's. Alas it was time to hand on the crown and they exited in the semi finals - I'm sure luck
will return in 2003. Both reserve grade crews enjoyed the competition with Titta's crew
showing a marked improvement. The conditions were somewhat unfavourable for our ladies
crew bu t they then redirected their focus and
well in the social arena.
Mathew Pickeri ng, the Chaplin at Shore School and a south coast boatie in times past, also
deserves a special men ti on. He has kindly offered onc of the Club's older boats a home at
North Sydney and regu lar ou tings on Sydney Harbour with a enthusiastic crew of Shore
lifesavers. If the early indications are anything 10 go on it looks very promising for a
competitive under 19's boat crew (or two!) next season.
As a final note I would like to encourage any Club members who has an urge to jump in a
surf boat to contact Coxy or myself. 1n all seriousness it will be some of the best fun you will
ever have and nothing beats the exhilaration of catching a big wave with four fellow Long
Ruffians.
See you out the back!
COMPETITION CAPTAIN'S REPORT
The 2001-2002 season was the first and hopefully the last without IRB competiti on. It not
only left club members restless over the winter. it also meant that there were fewer vis its to
the medal presentation podium by Long Reef members.
While the surf boat crews were not as successful this year (it is hard to do better than lasl
seasons Aussie GOLD) their enthusiastic participation and fun loving antics never seem to
fade. May this tradition continue without criticism for many more seasons to come.
Traditionally Long Reef is rather slack in all other fomls of competition. However, this year
maybe the beginning of a turn around. Nippers competed at our Branch carnivals with some
surprising results.
The Branch Championships at North Steyne provided the opportunity for a happy bunch of
Long Reef Masters (i.e. active members >30 years) to have some fu n.
Medal winners were:-
Scott McLaughlin
Stephen Cox
Phil Watson
Bronze 30-34years men's beach sprin t
Gold 30-34years men's beach Oags
Bronze 30-34years men's beach flags
Other competitors worthy of honourable mentions were Bruce Gaal, David Garren, Michael
season. We may even do a lillie training and brush up on the rules. ego the re lay.
IRB CAPTAIN'S REPORT
52nd ANNUAL REPORT & BALANCE SHEET
A most unr~markable sea~~n has passed with absolutely nothing spectacular to report. Due to
the suspensIOn ofCOmpetlllOn the lack of , activity in this area has produced a flat feeling
amongst 'duckie' enthusiasts.
2002 saw the arrival of the BP IRS which brings the number of ducks up to four. Having four
ducks does have its advantages. Twice now we have used all four ducks in the water at once
to ra i ~e money for the club. The duty boat role at the Man ly surf carnival was a great
expenence for those who participated and our competence in these machines was praised by
boat rowers and beach officials alike.
Maintenance of boats and motors was a constant task. Salt air was the biggest enemy of the
motors and over innation was the enemy of the ducks. However as the season draws to its end
all wi ll be sea worthy.
New guidelines for IRB racing are in the pipeline, which should be good news for those
enthusiasts.
A complete overhaul of the qualification system is also ready to be implemented. This will
change the requirements for those who wish 10 crew or drive at patrol and race level.
A number of members gained their drivers license during the season (congratulations) but atl
bronze holders should qualify.
Yours in Ducks
Pele Selosse
IRB CAPTAIN
Once the veterans were off the beach three very brave younger active members faced the
much tougher open competition. Lucy Bartipan took on a fierce field of amphibians in the
open women's surf race while Doug Gaal ballied a bullying bunch of Under 16 year a ids in
the board race.
However, the glory of the day went to Tom Rees who had a massive field of Whale Beach
competitors to whittle his way through one by one to win the gold medal in the under 19 years
beach flags. Then only narrowly missed out in the placing's of the beach sprint with a
gammy-hammy.
Now that we have made a start we should carry this effort into the 2002-2003 season. There
are a lot more carnivals locally and further a field. Unfortunately the age for masters
competition has been raised to >3Syears. However, I know of a lot of active members and
Nipper parents who could show their peers and kids that competition does not always mean
winning, but having a go, being a good sport and having fun in the sun .
This summer proved \0 be a very mixed one with good and bad weather and surf conditions
tlu'oughout the season. There were also a number of staff chan ges
The Vth formers spent many afternoons completing a Train the Trainer course during their
instruction of the bronze ;:Uld SRC groups. This did nOl work as well as doing the course
before the season started and we will revert to the previous method next season so that senior
boys are better prepared in their teaching ski ll s. We had to farewell Mr Mat Geyer at the end
of tenn IV and he worked with Mr Bird in the running of the patrol competition.
There was a heavy workl oad of instruction in Term IV 2001 with the influx of the Form 11
students making a total of 4 Bronze and 2 SRC plus I ARC group .Success was not
achieved by all despite the great organi sati onal skills of Mr Werakso who persevered along
with Simon Ronald, Graeme Burns and old boy Tim Middleton to get the dozen or so fa il ures
through to their awards in the early part of term I 2002. No student was able to get thei r fRB
license in this part of the season but Scott Carroll trained a small group in preparation for their
test in Term I 2002. Scott is in his third season with us si nce finish ing school and is back
again as a coach on a regular basis in charge of the IRB. Mr Meakins also did some training
in the boat with the aim of eventually getting his license.
Overall the exam system appears 10 be seuling down with grealer consistency being shown
by the Board of Examiners and both the students and the masters now have greater confidence
in the process, however the groups did suffer with a shorter term making their job much
harder. Some anomalies still exist especiall y in the scenarios part of the exam but we will
have to learn to live with it.
We were able to get the use of buses to Long Reef occasionally bUllhe weather made this of
little use other than late in term IV although more regularly in term I. Their continued use is
much appreciated by the boys alleviating the cramped confines of the pool at school with 100
students trying to use the facility. This more regular ex posure to the ocean began to improve
board paddling skills in particular and especially amongst th e younger group even though thi s
has meant morc dings in the short tenn !
Two additions were made to the coaching staff in term J 2002 with Mr Chris Cook a long
serving member of Queenscliff and North Narrabeen and Mr Mark Paul also of Ih e Notthern
Beaches who achieved his bronze in tenn I.
The patroll ers all passed their proficiency tests with no real problems. Mr Reynolds, who is a
former Senior Instructor and Board of Examiners member, continued the new system where
patrollers were wi thdraw n from patrol work to study for their A RC. The system was fine
LUned in Term rv and term I so as to not disrupt the patrol competition. Mr Reynolds was
also ab le to carry out ARC proficiencies and thi s aided the running of the activity at the start
of the season.
In Term I - 2002 Mr Werakso continued to build on the task of instruction by encouraging
some competition each Saturday. The w inners were awarded with a mars bar or other such
sugary delights at the end of each Salurd ay. Scott Carroll worked with a number of students
with the ultimate ai m the IRB award at t he end of the term, those training included :- Bill
Clifton, Jordan Mailman, Nick Black an d one or two Vth fonners such as Dave Moore and
Nick Payne doing early trajning for next season.
The Open day was greeted with changea ble but improving weather conditio ns all owing the
parent/son swim to go ahead. There wa s st ill a good turnout despite the poor weather at the
slart and trying surf conditions.
The palrollers continued to enjoy a variety of competiti on events in fierce competition for the
Hugh Kesterton Award for Term I 2002. This included a continuation of 'The Best Wave'
event where each patrol nominated a 4 malibu board riders. The surfboard event was
competed for in smail, clean waves and enjoyed by all as students struggled 10 control the
new equipment. A few students stood o ul including Sam Horder, Mitch Coghlan, Tim Smith
and Tim Doyle.
The Iron man event was won by James Bennett in term IV 200 land in a very close finish Sam
Harder from Tom Allen in term I 2002.
Thursday afternoons were used for most of the term with great effect at Long Reef. The
younger boys especially appeared to improve their use of boards earning a few dings along
the way.
Shore was also very successful in this years inter schools carnival seri es. The first was he ld at
Long Reef hosted by Shore and shorter second at Freshwater Beach hosted by Riverview on
Friday night, [hat was not unfortunately competed in by Shore dure to a congested timetable
of events resulting in the Ella Bache shield being determined by the o ne carni val hosted by
Shore.
Shore continues to dominate the water event s but credit must go to the other schools who are
improvi ng all the time and very often out perform us in the beach events. This year was no
exception with probably our worst performances on the sand including relays and water flags.
The water events were al so closer even though we managed to come out on top overall.
Mr Bird was again extremely efficient in starting all of the carnival events along with the
support Doug Lucas and Andrew Robson (both old boys an d members of Long Reef). The
Instruction groups held many events amongst themselves as the main carnival was
progressing so as to gel a fee l for what it will be like for them in the fu ture. The Shore parents
did a great job again by providing a barbecue at each of our beach events and a big word of
thanks must go to Mr and MrsRees for their great help this season. We were able to buy a
num ber of malibus for the internal patrol competit ion and to create variety and enjoyment in
the acti vity bought from the proceeds of the Open days organised by the Shore parents.
The Hugh Kesterton Award was a much tighter affair in Tenn I with the result dependent
upon the proficiency marks so well put together by Ben Lewis and Jason Nisbett. Although it
mu st be slated that the wi nni ng parrol was strong in both areas of the sport and deserved thelr
winners status.
A low key presentation barbecue took place at the beach on the last Saturday training session
where students were presented with their competition awards and we celebrated a 100% pass
in the Bronze exam fo r term I. The senior st udents also put on a barbecue for the younger
boys ancl staff.
Many thanks should go to members of Long Reef SLSC. They assisted throughout the season
and these include Steve Cox. Cath McDougall ,Todd Wiley, Huw Evans, Doug Lucas
Andrew Robson and others. They helped out with patrol matters givi ng our boys the support
they need on [he beach each Saturday. Peter Clark as always assisted us in all areas of the
sport but especially in his organisation of our carni va l and the tremendous help he gives me in
running the activity for the school.
All in all (he season was most enj oyabl e for both staff and boys. We all look forward to
another season of good surf and weather plus a reminder that in Term IV any Form II boys
who would like 10 join the sport may do so, rather than wait for their entry into form III as has
been the case in Ihe past. There is still the also the possibi lity of Knox an d St Luke's
competing in the Ella Bache seri es next year.
A special mention also to Sam Ki ely, James Bennett. Ben Middleton, Tom Rees and Mitch
