<strong>The</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>and</strong> <strong>Continuing</strong> Education (HKU<br />
SPACE) is the Extension Arm <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>.<br />
As a leading local provider in continuing education, it fulfils<br />
its mission through providing learning opportunities for<br />
personal, pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>and</strong> career advancement to people from<br />
all walks <strong>of</strong> life. Enrolments since 1956 have exceeded 2<br />
million <strong>and</strong> our annual enrolment now exceeds 100,000 each<br />
year. In 2008/09 this was equivalent to over 21,000 full-time<br />
students. <strong>The</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers timely <strong>and</strong> relevant courses that<br />
meet society’s needs to upgrade education <strong>and</strong> skills for the<br />
knowledge economy. <strong>The</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Business <strong>and</strong> Finance<br />
(CBF) within the <strong>School</strong> is collaborating with the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Surrey to <strong>of</strong>fer their series <strong>of</strong> Master Programmes in<br />
International Hotel Management, Tourism Marketing <strong>and</strong><br />
Retail Management in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Surrey<br />
<strong>The</strong> forerunner <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>, the Battersea<br />
Polytechnic Institute, founded 1891, began<br />
concentrating on science <strong>and</strong> technology from about<br />
1920 <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>fered day <strong>and</strong> evening degrees <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> London. Its academic reputation<br />
steadily grew to the point in 1956 where it was one <strong>of</strong><br />
the first colleges to be designated a 'college <strong>of</strong><br />
advanced technology'. It was renamed Battersea<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Technology in 1957. <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Surrey was established on 9 September 1966 with the<br />
grant <strong>of</strong> its Royal Charter. Since its foundation, the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Surrey has fostered links with other<br />
educational bodies in the local community <strong>and</strong> region.<br />
Management has been a major force in the<br />
<strong>University</strong>’s portfolio for over 30 years, providing<br />
programmes for managers <strong>and</strong> future managers. <strong>The</strong><br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Management has a global reputation for<br />
both teaching <strong>and</strong> research in the sectors <strong>of</strong><br />
hospitality, tourism <strong>and</strong> retail management, <strong>and</strong> the<br />
functional areas <strong>of</strong> entrepreneurship, marketing,<br />
technology management, <strong>and</strong> human resource<br />
