Neil’s Notes
As the UK pool industry prepares to
converge on Barcelona for the Salon de
Piscina exhibition in October, I sit here and marvel
at just how quickly the year has flown past. And
what a year it has been!
Thankfully, our offices and warehouse were
spared the ‘freak’ flooding that occurred in
Oxfordshire and neighboring counties in July,
although a number of our team were not so
fortunate and it certainly disrupted business for a
few days. Rainfall across the UK has been
dramatically higher than average, and in a
summer in which you can count the number of
hot balmy days on one hand, it is surprising how
well an industry, that is so weather dependent,
has weathered the storm, if you will excuse the
pun. But this is no time to let our guard down,
bearing in mind that with all the talk on global
warming, it looks like we are in for more unusual
weather patterns in the future. Sadly, the weather
is out of our control but we will strive to ensure
that as a business we provide you with the very
best products and service possible.
As the end of the year approaches, we are once
again turning our thoughts to Certikin’s series of
sales seminars (detailing our plans for 2008),
that we hold in January and February and to
which you are all most cordially invited. We will
keep you in touch with dates and venues and
hope to see as many of you as possible.
Enjoy reading this issue of Seasons – we hope it
gives you a taste of the vast selection of products
that Certikin has to offer and some of their
applications. In particular, we take a look at a
couple of our major suppliers (Calorex and
Malvern Boilers), who help to make the Certikin
name so great. We will be visiting some of our
other very important business partners in future

Certikin mourns the loss of Brian Mitchell
It is with great sadness that we report the death of
one of Certikin’s longest serving employees, Brian
Mitchell, who passed away in September.
A plumber by trade, Brian worked for Certikin from
1972 up until 2001 when, although taking retirement,
he still continued to work for the company on an
occasional basis, often using his experience in an
advisory capacity.
Brian, started work in the pool business with Peter Geekie who poached him from
British Gas. He quickly established himself as Peter’s chief engineer, turning his
hand to everything that was required. Being a CORGI engineer he worked across all
areas of the business.
Certikin Sales Director, Richard Way, says: “I will remember Brian with great
affection. He was a great Mr Fix-it… if Brian didn’t know how to do it, then it
wasn’t worth knowing. He always kept his head, no matter what the situation, and
was a great ambassador for the pool industry. Many pools, private and commercial,
have been built, refurbished and serviced by Brian and his team. A gentle
personality and a marvellous plumber, Brian will be sadly missed.”
Jackie Sullivan has joined Certikin in the newly created role of Sales
Executive, responsible for the exciting range of Caldera Spas and the very
popular Endless Summer telescopic
enclosures. Jackie, who comes to Certikin with a wealth of experience in
working with major retailers, will provide sales and marketing support to our
customers.
“I am really looking forward to this challenging new role,” says Jackie. “What makes it
particularly interesting is having such exciting products to promote. The luxurious Caldera
spa, from America’s number one hot tub manufacturer, really is the finest of its kind. If
anyone has any doubts about the vagaries of the British climate, then Endless Summer
telescopic enclosures really are the way forward.”
Jackie is married with three girls. Her hobby is caring for a retired racehorse that she
bought earlier this year.
Anthony Gordon is extending his remit as Technical Sales Advisor
to include Endless Summer enclosures as well as Caldera spas.
Anthony’s five years of experience working in the Spa and Sauna
department serves him well for answering customer enquiries and
dealing with quotations and orders. Whilst Jackie Sullivan will be
spending much of her time on the road visiting clients, Anthony will
be providing office-based technical sales support.

Sarah Newton - Sarah, Certikin’s receptionist/telephonist,
has recently returned from maternity leave. Sarah, who has
worked for Certikin for two years, is the proud mother of
eight month old baby boy Alex and two year old Jade.

Standards Institute last month
produced a report in which
they tested seven market
leading LED (light
emitting diode) lights and
the Certikin light came
out well ahead of any
other with fantastic results.
The lights were each tested for
the amount of light they produce and the
Certikin is light years ahead!
Certikin commercial white LED light
with 945 lumens came out a
staggering 53% brighter than its
nearest competitor with 617 lumens!
Put in simple terms, customers need to
buy three of the nearest competitor’s
lamps for two Certikin lamps per pool
to achieve the same light output.
Results also showed that the TK LED
lamps, again sold exclusively
by Certikin, are between
25% and 109% brighter
than the lamps produced
by other manufacturers.

It’s not everyday that you receive a
request to build a totally symmetrical
round pool but that was the brief for
Aqua Services of Oxfordshire.
The Patterson family were keen to have a
swimming pool that looked as “natural” as
possible; in fact they wanted it to be made to
look like a garden pond in order to blend into
the garden but with all the convenience of a
modern day pool. For the pool finish they
chose Pacelite in Jade which is a lustrous
marble/cement lining for pools that is durable
and easily maintained. Although Certikin
filters and pumps were added, a natural reed
filtration system was also installed. Aside
from Certikin underwater lights, inlets, main
drains etc, the pool is heated with a 280,000
BTU Certikin oil boiler.
Piece de Résistance
The crowning glory is a specially
designed solar Roldeck cover, chosen for
its looks, ease of use and functionality.
Due to the shape of the 10 metre round
pool, Aqua Services had to construct a pit
to house the Roldeck in the centre of the
2.5 metre deep pool floor, from which
the cover comes out and floats over to the
edges. When the pool is in use, the pool
floor is completely flat with the cover
neatly tucked out of sight in the pit. A
colour matched fibreglass trap door closes
automatically over the top leaving the
Roldeck completely hidden. The
photographs show how beautifully the
cover complements the pool and how
seamless it is to use.

Hitting the deck
The Roldeck cover, since its introduction in
1996, has gone from strength to strength.
Manager of the Pool and CertiChem’s
divisions, Bruce Coppuck, says: “This cover
is the ultimate in heat insulation,
evaporation control, durability and aesthetic
appearance – it’s simply the best of its
kind on the market.”
Ingenious design - the Roldeck comes in
the form of a taut pattern of slats, similar
to a Venetian blind. Automatic coiling and
uncoiling is ultra-smooth and silent. Each
section simulates the double glazing
system, with 0.5” of interspace combining
the highest degree of insulation with
evaporation control.
Choice - the slats come in white, blue,
grey, solar and transparent. The white, blue
and grey slats provide excellent insulation
and seal the swimming pool from light
which hinders the growth of algae. The
solar model, with a black base, collects
heat from the sun and transfers it directly
into the water, greatly reducing heating
costs. The translucent slats provide
customers with the ability to appreciate
under water lighting whilst maintaining the
benefits of having the pool fully covered.
Versatile - a Roldeck can be made to
measure for almost any new or existing
swimming pool, domestic or commercial.
The coiling mechanism can be installed
above or below ground or in the pool itself.
The Roldeck coming out of its specially constructed pit in the centre of the pool.
In the case of above ground installation,
the protective cover can be finished for
use as a bench. Remote control is also
available.
Big or small - There are two size
categories: standard, for pools up to
6 x 13 metres; and large for pools up to
10 x 20 metres.
Pit-stop
The Roldeck’s unique in-roller motor means
that a separate motor pit is not required,
saving both time and expense.
The standard unit is suitable for pools up to
12 by 6 metres and a larger unit for pools
up to 8 by 20metres. The high-pressure
motor vessel is filled with nitrogen and
features Formula 1 shock absorber seal
technology; obviating the risk of flooded
motors. The new system can be used with
new installations or easily retrofitted into
existing pools. ■

When a school pool in High Wycombe was condemned last year for being unsafe to use, Wycombe
Leisure Ltd turned to Certikin to supply much of the equipment that was required to return the pool to
its former glory. With the result being, not only did the pool receive a clean bill of health but Certikin
was awarded ten out of ten for its service and A* products.

Wycombe re-opened its doors this
summer following the completion of a
refurbishment costing in excess of
£250,000. The 15 metre swimming
pool had previously lain in a neglected
state for two years.
Inadequate filtration and an inefficient
heating and ventilation plant were
removed and in its place a highly
efficient Calorex Delta 12 installed. This
means that the pool hall can now
maintain an air temperature of 31
degrees all year round by recovering
heat from the air and using it to heat the
pool water to a comfortable 30 degrees
with a reduction of at least 10 tonnes of
carbon dioxide emitted to the
atmosphere.
To address the filtration problem, a
larger filtration
system (in the shape
of two BP553

one SLX 1600-30M
Bobbin Wound Filter)
was installed to allow
greater water flow and
the removal of surface pollution.
Other Certikin products installed in
the pool include skimmers and wide
angle extensions, adjustable inlets,
stainless steel sump grilles, an auto
level unit and stainless steel steps.

Walu: the three in one cover
The stunning new Walu cover gives you

its reel system, a winter cover and all

p90-308 safety standard and comfortably

solar and heat retention benefits and acts as
a first class winter cover. Unlike other safety
covers, where the whole system needs to be
replaced if it should become damaged, all
individual parts on the Walu cover are
replaceable. The cover’s panels and
anodised aluminium tubes are
interchangeable and so can be replaced, if
necessary, and on site, so you never have to
be without your pool safety system.

Two models are available – Evolution for all
pool shapes up to 10 x 5 m and Starlight
for all rectangular pools up to 11m by
5.50m. Shaping for ladders and step
sections is accommodated and does not, in
anyway, compromise safety.
The Walu comes in opaque and solar

It weighs just 1.250 kg per sq metre and
can be rolled by just one person using a
geared down manual crank (or two people
using two cranks for pools of at least 50
sqm). This takes less than three minutes
and the cover takes up very little space.

quick charger, completely recharges the
battery in less than 20 minutes.

Malvern Boilers

Postcard from Our Man in Dubai
Back in January of this year
Certikin set up a new office in
Dubai to enhance the company’s
service to the Gulf region, Africa
and the Far East. Eight months
on, how are Certikin’s Sales
Executive Jon Maskell and his
wife Meti finding their new life
Forty degrees centigrade - this is the temperature as I write and you may be thinking, no surprise
for Dubai but it is just 8.00am in the morning!
January 8th 2007 will go down in history for my wife Meti and I as “D- Day”, or Dubai day to the
uninitiated. This was the day we left Britain’s grey shores for the sunnier climes of the Gulf region.
We arrived at 6.45am at Dubai’s International Airport, and picked up the keys for our new home.
We were a little apprehensive as neither of us had seen inside the apartment before or even knew
where in the complex it was. After an hour of literally wandering around aimlessly with our
suitcases and worldly belongings we managed to find it and thankfully we were pleasantly
surprised. (In other words, it passed my wife’s inspection!) I have to admit though that the term
“furnished” was slightly misleading and a trip to Ikea was urgently called for (yes, Ikea has
reached Dubai too).
Our apartment overlooks a pedestrianised area and in the cooler months it plays host to
entertainers, African dancers and desert rally cars… there is always something to look at. It is
also on the flight path for planes in and out of Dubai and we are constantly reminded of the fastmoving
and transitory nature of the place. Flights do not stop even at night time and so, for the
first week, our sleep patterns were much disturbed but it’s amazing what you get used to and now
we do not even notice them!
On the work front, I have been liaising closely with Certikin’s distributor in the region on numerous
projects to ensure the specification of Certikin equipment. The company enjoys a far-flung, firstclass
reputation and has a presence in over 55 of the world’s countries. The Certikin name has
found its way into Sheikhs’ palaces, yachts and even the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas!
I have been working with our distributor in Oman, with whom we have recently secured a large
refurbishment for the prestigious, Al Bustan hotel. I am also currently working in Jordan on a new
Lazy River and swimming pool complex in the Tala Bay development of Aqaba for a hotel called Zara.
As I write, we are in the midst of summer and two words sum it up HOT and HUMID, with
temperatures in their mid to high Forties and humidity around 60%! Ramadan will start shortly
and this will be another new experience for us. The main effect of which will be during the day -
no drinking or eating in public!

I can honestly say we are not missing the UK at all, seeing the news about the floods this
summer, we are glad we are living in the desert! Friends have been supplying Marmite and
Bovril for us and the football season is covered on Dubai television, the only problem is staying
awake for the evening matches but there again there is always the drone of the midnight flight
from Turkmenistan to wake us up! ■

The world’s tallest tower…
…the Burj Dubai for which Certikin has
supplied a number of air blowers. At the base
of the tower, through a sand storm you can
see that a shopping mall (the world’s largest)
is currently being constructed.
The world’s longest Lazy River!
Typical of the projects that Jon is working on is the impressive Lazy River, installed in the
Barr Al Jissah Resort in Muscat by Al Ansari of Oman which, at over 700 metres long,
is the world’s longest.
The idea behind the Lazy River is for guests to be propelled downstream by the current
in small balloon-type boats, thus linking one resort to another.
“It took around 18 months to complete as it was a huge job. On the electromechanical
side we had to install 12 inch and 10 inch pipelines together, with 19 pumps and 4 sand
filters,” says Chaitanya V. Tokekar, Al Ansari’s Senior Project Engineer. “It has been a
great success. As per the initial design, the water in the river was supposed to run at
0.5m/sec, and we have achieved around 0.7m/sec, which can be throttled down to
0.3mt/sec without any trouble.
“We were delighted with all the help and advice that Certikin and, in particular, Jon
Maskell gave us and also Fluvo.” ■
Made in Dubai - the
‘Versa-tile’ spa
Manufactured in Dubai by TCTI, the Certikin
tiled spas, launched this year, have proved
to be a great hit because of their luxury
looks and versatility. They are ideal for
refurbishment projects as they come with
the option of being delivered in two halves
to aid entry into buildings. The spas can
then be rejoined on site and the joint hidden
by tiling over it using the matching tile
strips provided. Highly versatile, they are

As safe as houses
Safety is always the number one
concern for pool owners with
children and pets but thanks to

their new luxury home in Shipton-on-
Cherwell in Oxfordshire, they had already
put in a phone call to their local pool

previous owners had filled in an old pool

and extend it, if only for the opportunities
it would give our three young children,”
remarks Max Peterson. However, like so
many families with young children, the
next question was: “Ah, but how do we
make it safe for the children”
“All of our children are under ten years old
and whilst they are pretty good
swimmers, I was concerned that their
friends may not be and when they are
playing in our garden they are naturally
our responsibility,” explains Max.
“I turned for advice to Blue Water Pools
who I understood had fitted a number of
Coverstars in the past and who swear by
their safety record as being one of the
best in the industry. Whilst Coverstar don’t
recommend that people walk over the
cover deliberately, I was impressed by the
fact that it claims to easily hold the weight
of an adult* which is good enough for us!”
The Petersons chose an encapsulated
underguide Coverstar system and have
just enjoyed their first summer of use. It
prides itself on being simple to operate -
via a key switch. When not in use, the
key can be removed, preventing
unauthorised operation.

Going under cover
The Coverstar system is based on strength. For example, the
sliders, which are traditionally the weakest part of a cover
system, are more than four times as strong as any other
slider used in the industry.
The cover’s strength also comes from the heavy duty fabric –
the Ultragard III vinyl composite fabric is of industrial
strength. It is available in eight colours and offers unparalleled
resistance to sun, chlorine and other pool chemicals.
The cover features an exclusive heavy-duty double row of
stainless steel ball bearing pulleys which have almost triple
the load bearing capacity of single row pulleys used by other
companies.
Available as a retro-fit deck mounted or pit mounted system
or in a range of installation styles for new pools, Coverstar
will fulfil almost any customer requirement. The shape of the
pool is virtually irrelevant as Coverstar’s powerful
hydraulic drive and versatile track options can enclose
almost any pool.
A team of fully trained engineers is available to install the
Coverstar system. Alternatively, written instructions are
provided if you wish to complete your own installation.
Coverstar is assembled at Certikin’s manufacturing plant in
Leeds. The components come from America but, by
assembling them in the UK, it allows for greater flexibility
with regards to specification changes, supply of spare parts
and delivery times.

the cover, the pool is in pristine condition,”

good at retaining heat. All in all, I am
delighted with it.”
The pool itself is a fine example of a
“Certikin” pool. Blue Water dug out,
extended and renovated the old pool and
the gleaming 40 ft by 20 ft new pool
bears little resemblance to its predecessor.

in the swimming pool, Certikin
ladders feature a 1.7 inch double
top tread.
The ladder, made of 316 marine grade
stainless steel, complies with British
Standard EN13451 and is available to

A helping hand
Of course, if you are disabled, then gaining
access to a pool requires a little more
forethought and, since the Disability
Discrimination Act of 2005 it is beholden
on service providers, such as leisure centre
owners, to make “reasonable adjustments”
to any physical features that may act as a
barrier to access. Certikin has responded to
this by introducing two hard-working
products that are designed specifically for
those with disabilities.
What a PAL!
The unique versatility of the Portable
Aquatic Lift (PAL) makes it the ideal
solution to the problem of access for the
disabled or the infirm who would like to
use commercial or multi-pool facilities.
This portable powered lift does not require
mounting to the pool deck or the need for a
water or electric supply. It can literally be
positioned anywhere around the pool and
put away when not in use.
Easy to use: just roll the PAL to the edge of
the pool, lock the wheels, set the stabilisers
and it’s ready to use.
Accessibility: The PAL makes any pool
accessible in seconds. It provides 3001b
(136kg) lifting capacity together with a
240 degree turning radius for safe
transfers aways from the pool edge.
User friendly: the PAL incorporates two
powerful 24v actuators operated by a
water-proof pendant. This means that the
PAL can be operated by either the
attendant or the user on his own.

Giving a lift!
Following hot on the heels of the launch of
the PAL, the Splash semi portable aquatic
lift, introduced in 2006, has proved an
equal success.
This removable deck mounted aquatic lift
can be used with existing deck anchors or
easily installed with any standard anchor.
Its unique design, keeps all swimming
lanes clear when the unit is in place. The
Splash is also ideal for residential use.
Easy to use, it can be operated by either
the user or an attendant and its hand
control is completely waterproof. It provides
359 degree turn radius for safe transfers
away from the pool edge and does not
impede swim lanes. It is powered by a 24-
volt rechargeable battery, which powers a
mechanical actuator.
It is virtually maintenance free and made
with corrosion proof materials – the frame

Endless customer satisfaction
How the pool shapes up
The pool is made of Scandinavian red wood
(walls) and comes with a hardwood top. It’s
available in two sizes - 4.2m by 4.2m
octagon and a larger 6m by 4.2m oval.
Both are 1.21m deep.
The high specification includes the pool
walls, steps, Certikin flow fittings, filtration,
maintenance kit, cover, liner, (30 thou. plain
blue). The smoothly finished wooden ladder
can easily be detached when not in use. The
pools are suitable for both customer selfassembly
and installation by pool retailers.
For speedy installation and un-paralleled good looks, there are few above
ground pools that can even hold a candle to the Endless Summer wooden pool
that was launched by Certikin last year. And that’s not just our view…the
following is just one of many glowing reports that we have received about the
product’s performance.

Highly attractive and of sound construction,
the pool has no side buttresses or braces, so
takes up a lot less space than pools of this
kind. Furthermore, the pool does away with
the need for any ugly, and often large
concreted-in, steel supports, making it far
easier to install.

installation team. This was set up at the
beginning of the year, thanks to customer
