Many dogs and c<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>s are still benefiting from the Pet Food Program. Dry dog<br />

and c<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> food is sent out <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> these four-legged compani<strong>on</strong>s every other Tuesday.<br />

Recently this program has grown dram<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ically and now feeds 114 dogs and 75 c<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>s.<br />

We are in need of d<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>s of dry dog food and c<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> food now more than ever as our<br />

supplies are running out much more quickly.<br />

a note from the executive direc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

The entire community works<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>gether <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> insure the c<strong>on</strong>tinued success<br />

of our meal program. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Volunteer</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

drivers, both regular and substitute,<br />

are needed each day <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> deliver meals.<br />

Currently, we have 700 corpor<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e<br />

drivers and over 330 community<br />

volunteers.<br />

Our role is very important as we<br />

deliver a hot meal M<strong>on</strong>day through<br />

Friday <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> people who are homebound,<br />

elderly, or disabled. In our country <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>day,<br />

extended families rarely live in the<br />

same <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>wn, much less the same home.<br />

This shift in society directly impacts the care of family members.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Lubbock</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Meals</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Wheels</strong> provides more than a meal. We are<br />

the human <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>uch. Our volunteers are knocking <strong>on</strong> the door,<br />

saying hello, and checking <strong>on</strong> th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> homebound pers<strong>on</strong>.<br />

April is <str<strong>on</strong>g>Volunteer</str<strong>on</strong>g> M<strong>on</strong>th and the Board of Direc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs and<br />

staff want <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> thank all of the w<strong>on</strong>derful, kind volunteers who<br />

are the backb<strong>on</strong>e of our program. Together, we make a difference<br />

Every June, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lubbock</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Meals</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Wheels</strong>, in an <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>tempt <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> raise public awareness<br />

of our missi<strong>on</strong>, holds the Big <strong>Wheels</strong> Deliver <str<strong>on</strong>g>Meals</str<strong>on</strong>g> promoti<strong>on</strong> in c<strong>on</strong>juncti<strong>on</strong><br />

with S<strong>on</strong>ic Drive-Ins. On Friday June 22, local celebrities, chauffeured in classic<br />

see these nostalgic cars, and enjoy a special lunch. All celebrities and drivers are<br />

invited <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> return <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lubbock</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Meals</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Wheels</strong>’ office for lunch (also provided<br />

Beginning with this newsletter we will now include a new article called the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Volunteer</str<strong>on</strong>g> Spotlight.<br />

To kick off this new additi<strong>on</strong>, we are fe<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>uring two of our “<str<strong>on</strong>g>Top</str<strong>on</strong>g> 15” volunteers (based<br />

<strong>on</strong> the number of hours they serve annually). Future newsletters will fe<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ure <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>Lubbock</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

service in their own words. We hope you will enjoy reading about some of our many dedic<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed<br />

Why did you decide <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> volunteer Gary Weaver said,<br />

“Come <strong>on</strong>” so here I am, so there!<br />

Why do you c<strong>on</strong>tinue <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> volunteer Does me good –<br />

maybe more me than the <strong>on</strong>e th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> I’m delivering<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>. I feel like maybe I’m being a little bit<br />

useful.<br />

Most memorable volunteer experience: There was<br />

<strong>on</strong>e lady th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> used <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be <strong>on</strong> my route th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

suffered from severe dementia. Each time I<br />

went <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> her house she would be all dressed up<br />

wearing red high heels and lots of make-up<br />

and tell me I was there <strong>on</strong> the wr<strong>on</strong>g day and<br />

didn’t seem <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> know why I was there. I would<br />

have <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> explain <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> her th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> I was bringing her<br />

a meal from <str<strong>on</strong>g>Meals</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Wheels</strong>. One day, after<br />

c<strong>on</strong>vincing her th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> I had a meal for her, as<br />

she opened the door she fell and in trying <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

c<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ch her we both ended up <strong>on</strong> the floor. I<br />

called 911 and <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ld her <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> stay put and help<br />

would be here so<strong>on</strong>. As I had <strong>on</strong>e more meal<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> deliver nearby I went <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> do th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> and came<br />

right back <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> find the paramedics there with<br />

her. I began <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<strong>on</strong>der wh<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> in the world she<br />

would tell the emergency workers about me<br />

and wh<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> had happened. As so<strong>on</strong> as she saw<br />

me she asked where her meal was! I <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ld her<br />

I had put it in the refrigera<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r but she didn’t<br />

believe me so <strong>on</strong>e of the paramedics checked<br />

it out and c<strong>on</strong>firmed th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> it was there. Th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

was the last day I delivered <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> her as she then<br />

was moved <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> a nursing home. She did not<br />

seem <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> remember much else but she always<br />

remembered <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> put <strong>on</strong> those red high heels<br />

and get dressed up every day!<br />

Why do you think your volunteer work is important I<br />

am <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>tally SOLD <strong>on</strong> this <str<strong>on</strong>g>Meals</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Wheels</strong><br />

Why did you decide <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> volunteer My older brother<br />

was homebound in the l<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e 1980s. He used<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Meals</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Wheels</strong> two different times during<br />

this period. I saw the benefit th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Meals</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>Wheels</strong> provided him during this time. When<br />

I retired I knew th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> I needed a project and<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Meals</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Wheels</strong> was my choice and it has<br />

worked well for me.<br />

Why do you c<strong>on</strong>tinue <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> volunteer I volunteer <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Meals</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Wheels</strong> because I really enjoy seeing<br />

the recipients. They seem <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> appreci<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e<br />

a smile, a kind word nearly as much as the<br />

lunch. I benefit also because I really like delivering<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> them.<br />

Most memorable volunteer experience: I have met<br />

so many ne<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> people th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> have <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>uched and<br />

enriched my life. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Volunteer</str<strong>on</strong>g> work also makes<br />

me realize how fortun<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e I am.<br />

Why do you think your volunteer work is important<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Volunteer</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing is important <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the recipient and<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> me. I am fortun<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> have good health<br />

so th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> I can deliver a meal <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> some<strong>on</strong>e th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

needs it. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Volunteer</str<strong>on</strong>g> work benefits the recipient<br />

as well as the pers<strong>on</strong> volunteering.<br />
