But, all kidding aside, the number one reason <strong>to</strong> volunteer <strong>at</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong> <strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels:
1. One hour of your time can make an incredible difference in the life of someone who is
homebound, elderly, or disabled.
N<strong>at</strong>ional <strong>Volunteer</strong> Appreci<strong>at</strong>ion Week is April 15 -21 and <strong>Lubbock</strong> <strong>Meals</strong> on
Wheels’ will show our appreci<strong>at</strong>ion for our over 1,000 volunteers <strong>at</strong> our Annual
<strong>Volunteer</strong> Appreci<strong>at</strong>ion Reception. The event will be held <strong>at</strong> 7:00p.m. Friday,
April 20th, <strong>at</strong> Indiana Avenue Baptist Church, 9507 Indiana Avenue. <strong>Volunteer</strong>s
will be tre<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>to</strong> a dessert provided by Dickey’s Barbeque and many will receive
various personalized awards for their years of service.

F<strong>at</strong> Tuesday was Fun Tuesday!
<strong>Lubbock</strong> <strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels held the thirteenth annual Mardi Gras fundraiser on February 21. Fortun<strong>at</strong>ely, the we<strong>at</strong>her cooper<strong>at</strong>ed
and allowed for one of our largest crowds and a very successful event raising over $70,000. The guests were tre<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>to</strong> delicious
food from 37 local restaurants, live jazz music by the Shinn Turner Dixieland Band fe<strong>at</strong>uring Hayley Bur<strong>to</strong>n, a large silent auction,
spectacular balloon arrangements, a sparkling ice sculpture, and various entertainers including dancers, clowns, and caric<strong>at</strong>ure
artists. Younger guests had a gre<strong>at</strong> time on the infl<strong>at</strong>able bouncers and spider climber or having their hair and faces painted in the
children’s activity area. The crowd, adorned in festive beads and masks, was greeted by the Mardi Gras King and Queen (Evan Ons<strong>to</strong>t
and Nikki-Dee Ray of KLBK) who reigned over the evening in regal <strong>at</strong>tire. Plans are already underway for Mardi Gras 2013
in the Civic Center Exhibit Hall.

Many dogs and c<strong>at</strong>s are still benefiting from the Pet Food Program. Dry dog
and c<strong>at</strong> food is sent out <strong>to</strong> these four-legged companions every other Tuesday.
Recently this program has grown dram<strong>at</strong>ically and now feeds 114 dogs and 75 c<strong>at</strong>s.
We are in need of don<strong>at</strong>ions of dry dog food and c<strong>at</strong> food now more than ever as our
supplies are running out much more quickly.

The entire community works
<strong>to</strong>gether <strong>to</strong> insure the continued success
of our meal program. <strong>Volunteer</strong>
drivers, both regular and substitute,
are needed each day <strong>to</strong> deliver meals.
Currently, we have 700 corpor<strong>at</strong>e
drivers and over 330 community
volunteers.
Our role is very important as we
deliver a hot meal Monday through
Friday <strong>to</strong> people who are homebound,
elderly, or disabled. In our country <strong>to</strong>day,
extended families rarely live in the
same <strong>to</strong>wn, much less the same home.
This shift in society directly impacts the care of family members.
<strong>Lubbock</strong> <strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels provides more than a meal. We are
the human <strong>to</strong>uch. Our volunteers are knocking on the door,
saying hello, and checking on th<strong>at</strong> homebound person.
April is <strong>Volunteer</strong> Month and the Board of Direc<strong>to</strong>rs and
staff want <strong>to</strong> thank all of the wonderful, kind volunteers who
are the backbone of our program. Together, we make a difference
in many people’s lives.

Rotary is fast approaching. The sale is
scheduled for April 27th & 28th, from
7a.m.-6p.m. Friday and 7a.m.-2p.m.

Sports Center). You still have time <strong>to</strong> clean
out those closets, <strong>at</strong>tics, and garages and

Get Your Mo<strong>to</strong>rs Running
Every June, <strong>Lubbock</strong> <strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels, in an <strong>at</strong>tempt <strong>to</strong> raise public awareness
of our mission, holds the Big Wheels Deliver <strong>Meals</strong> promotion in conjunction
with Sonic Drive-Ins. On Friday June 22, local celebrities, chauffeured in classic
cars, will deliver a meal of burgers and t<strong>at</strong>er <strong>to</strong>ts <strong>to</strong> all <strong>Lubbock</strong> <strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels’
recipients. It is a tre<strong>at</strong> for our recipients <strong>to</strong> be visited by these important people,
see these nostalgic cars, and enjoy a special lunch. All celebrities and drivers are
invited <strong>to</strong> return <strong>to</strong> the <strong>Lubbock</strong> <strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels’ office for lunch (also provided
by Sonic). Forty-five classic cars and drivers are needed <strong>to</strong> accommod<strong>at</strong>e
all the routes. It is always a challenge <strong>to</strong> round up enough cars for the event so if
you own a classic or unique car and would like <strong>to</strong> particip<strong>at</strong>e in this very special

Wheels will provide nutritious, home
delivered meals <strong>to</strong> those who are
homebound, elderly or disabled. We
shall seek <strong>to</strong> break the social isol<strong>at</strong>ion
experienced by the homebound by
providing warm, caring, friendly
contact through our volunteers.

<strong>Volunteer</strong> Spotlight
Beginning with this newsletter we will now include a new article called the <strong>Volunteer</strong> Spotlight.
To kick off this new addition, we are fe<strong>at</strong>uring two of our “<strong>Top</strong> 15” volunteers (based
on the number of hours they serve annually). Future newsletters will fe<strong>at</strong>ure one <strong>Lubbock</strong>
<strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels’ volunteer and will include a pho<strong>to</strong> and inform<strong>at</strong>ion about their volunteer
service in their own words. We hope you will enjoy reading about some of our many dedic<strong>at</strong>ed
volunteers and perhaps their s<strong>to</strong>ries will inspire you <strong>to</strong> volunteer as well!

Why did you decide <strong>to</strong> volunteer Gary Weaver said,
“Come on” so here I am, so there!
Why do you continue <strong>to</strong> volunteer Does me good –
maybe more me than the one th<strong>at</strong> I’m delivering
<strong>to</strong>. I feel like maybe I’m being a little bit
useful.
Most memorable volunteer experience: There was
one lady th<strong>at</strong> used <strong>to</strong> be on my route th<strong>at</strong>
suffered from severe dementia. Each time I
went <strong>to</strong> her house she would be all dressed up
wearing red high heels and lots of make-up
and tell me I was there on the wrong day and
didn’t seem <strong>to</strong> know why I was there. I would
have <strong>to</strong> explain <strong>to</strong> her th<strong>at</strong> I was bringing her
a meal from <strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels. One day, after
convincing her th<strong>at</strong> I had a meal for her, as
she opened the door she fell and in trying <strong>to</strong>
c<strong>at</strong>ch her we both ended up on the floor. I
called 911 and <strong>to</strong>ld her <strong>to</strong> stay put and help
would be here soon. As I had one more meal
<strong>to</strong> deliver nearby I went <strong>to</strong> do th<strong>at</strong> and came
right back <strong>to</strong> find the paramedics there with
her. I began <strong>to</strong> wonder wh<strong>at</strong> in the world she
would tell the emergency workers about me
and wh<strong>at</strong> had happened. As soon as she saw
me she asked where her meal was! I <strong>to</strong>ld her
I had put it in the refrigera<strong>to</strong>r but she didn’t
believe me so one of the paramedics checked
it out and confirmed th<strong>at</strong> it was there. Th<strong>at</strong>
was the last day I delivered <strong>to</strong> her as she then
was moved <strong>to</strong> a nursing home. She did not
seem <strong>to</strong> remember much else but she always
remembered <strong>to</strong> put on those red high heels
and get dressed up every day!
Why do you think your volunteer work is important I
am <strong>to</strong>tally SOLD on this <strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels
oper<strong>at</strong>ion. Stands alone on don<strong>at</strong>ions with
NO government interference. I personally
know the people who are making it work. I
am proud <strong>to</strong> tell people where I “work” –
where I volunteer.

Why did you decide <strong>to</strong> volunteer My older brother
was homebound in the l<strong>at</strong>e 1980s. He used
<strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels two different times during
this period. I saw the benefit th<strong>at</strong> <strong>Meals</strong> on
Wheels provided him during this time. When
I retired I knew th<strong>at</strong> I needed a project and
<strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels was my choice and it has
worked well for me.
Why do you continue <strong>to</strong> volunteer I volunteer <strong>at</strong>
<strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels because I really enjoy seeing
the recipients. They seem <strong>to</strong> appreci<strong>at</strong>e
a smile, a kind word nearly as much as the
lunch. I benefit also because I really like delivering
<strong>to</strong> them.
Most memorable volunteer experience: I have met
so many ne<strong>at</strong> people th<strong>at</strong> have <strong>to</strong>uched and
enriched my life. <strong>Volunteer</strong> work also makes
me realize how fortun<strong>at</strong>e I am.
Why do you think your volunteer work is important
<strong>Volunteer</strong>ing is important <strong>to</strong> the recipient and
<strong>to</strong> me. I am fortun<strong>at</strong>e <strong>to</strong> have good health
so th<strong>at</strong> I can deliver a meal <strong>to</strong> someone th<strong>at</strong>
needs it. <strong>Volunteer</strong> work benefits the recipient
as well as the person volunteering.
Wh<strong>at</strong> do you want people <strong>to</strong> know about <strong>Lubbock</strong> <strong>Meals</strong>
on Wheels <strong>Lubbock</strong> <strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels provides
a much needed service <strong>to</strong> people th<strong>at</strong> might
not e<strong>at</strong> otherwise. A lot of the recipients have
no family nearby and they look forward <strong>to</strong>
having someone come by on a daily basis.

We have your Dish
The Annie’s Ch<strong>at</strong> & Chew event is
coming up <strong>at</strong> the Mae Simmons Senior
Center on S<strong>at</strong>urday, April 14th from
11a.m.-2p.m. This fundraiser was started
over twenty years ago by long-time volunteer
Annie Sanders and continues as
a memorial once again this year. Guests
will enjoy plenty of gre<strong>at</strong> food (especially
the fried c<strong>at</strong>fish), visiting with friends,
and remembering Annie Sanders, a very
generous woman. Don<strong>at</strong>ions are accepted
<strong>at</strong> the door <strong>to</strong> help fund the purchase of
meals for the homebound community
served by <strong>Lubbock</strong> <strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels.
<strong>Lubbock</strong> <strong>Meals</strong> on Wheels would like <strong>to</strong> remember the many volunteers
who passed away in the past year. Our symp<strong>at</strong>hies go <strong>to</strong> their families and
