Welcome to 2008! Lubbock Meals on Wheels is busy planning 

another Mardi Gras celebration. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, 

February 26th, and join us for a fun-filled evening at the ninth annual 

Mardi Gras fundraiser. 

Mardi Gras 2008 will include 35 food booths (with selections from your 

favorite local restaurants), live jazz music by the Shinn/Turner Dixieland 

Jazz Band, a large silent auction, and cash bars. Once again, the event will 

take place in the Civic Center Exhibit Hall which is large enough to accommodate 

many guests, children’s activities, and various entertainers such as 

jugglers, dancers, and clowns. Colorful masks and beads will be available 

to make the evening even more festive. Guests will also enjoy flamboyant 

decorations in the official colors of purple (for justice), green (for faith), and 

gold (for power). Be sure to check out the French Market and take home 

some fabulous treasures: trendy shirts, fragrances, jewelry, and other items. 

Kids will enjoy the expanded Children’s Area featuring bouncers, face and 

hair painting, and many other activities. Bryan Mudd and Terri Furman of 

KLBK will reign over the evening as our King and Queen of Mardi Gras. 

Tickets are $25 for adults, ($30 at the door), $10 for children under 12, and 

can be purchased in advance at Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ office or by cutting 

out and returning the invitation below. We accept cash, check, or credit 

cards and will be happy to mail tickets or hold them for you at the door. 

Event tickets also may be purchased at any Select-A-Seat location beginning 

January 28th (service charge applies). New this year: benefit drawing for a 

trip for two to your choice of Chicago, San Francisco, or Washington, D.C. 

(includes roundtrip airfare, two nights at a 4 star hotel, transfers and City 

tour, a $1500 value). Drawing tickets are $25 each and only 250 will be sold. 

Several levels of sponsorship are available for businesses and offer some 

excellent benefits such as complimentary tickets and advertising. For more

a fun evening of great food and fantastic entertainment at Mardi Gras 2008.

The sixteenth annual “Feed a Friend – It’s as Easy as Pie” fundraiser was held the week 

before Thanksgiving, raising $46,855 surpassing our goal and making it the most successful 

Easy as Pie event ever. A special thank you to Donald Finkner (bottom photo) 

for his generous annual gift for this fundraiser. Not only does he make a large monetary 

contribution, he then redeems his pie coupons and donates the pies back to us for use 

in our kitchen! Thank you very much to United Supermarkets, KLBK, KAMC, and 

Hartsfield Design for their help in making the fundraiser possible. Congratulations to 

Greg McAlister of KAMC who was victorious in the pie-eating contest following a “tie 

breaker” against Armen of Z 02. This is Greg’s fourth consecutive win in this frenzied 

competition that kicks off the Easy as Pie fundraiser. Thanks to the other contest participants: 

Ron Roberts of KAMC, Debbie Sumner and Randy Crimmins of United 

Supermarkets, Bryan Mudd and Terri Furman of KLBK, Tray Payne of the District 

Attorney’s Office, Jacqui Neal and Max of Z102, and Sheriff David Gutierrez. 

Finally, our thanks to all the radio stations that promoted the fundraiser and to the 

massive number of volunteers and donors who so generously supported the event. 

Meals on Wheels January 2008 

Extra! Extra! Read All About It! 

Lubbock Avalanche Journal continues to provide 150 newspapers per day (Monday 

– Friday) to be distributed free of charge to clients in Lubbock, the Adult Day 

Activity Center, and in Idalou. Caprock Home Health and AJ Readers are generously 

sponsoring this special project. Lubbock Meals on Wheels is very excited 

about continuing this partnership and looks forward to providing yet another “extra” 

to our meal recipients. 

Food, Fun, & Facts 

Lubbock Meals on Wheels held its Annual Dinner, January 29. Guests enjoyed a 

delicious buffet at Home Café while being updated on the various statistics of the 

Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ program. Board members were honored for their years 

of dedicated service, and new members* were sworn in for their upcoming terms. 

Thank you to Sue Franklin for serving as Board President in 2007. Welcome to 

Russell Campbell who will serve as Board President in 2008. 

Generosity Abounds 

Many groups, organizations, clubs, 

businesses, schools, and individuals 

made generous donations throughout 

the holiday season, and we are truly 

grateful for their support. Space limitations 

prevent a complete listing of all the 

names, but to all who were kind enough 

to bring monetary and other donations, 

please know that your gifts made a tremendous 

difference in the lives of the 

homebound, elderly, and disabled right 

here in our community. You all have our 

most sincere thanks.

Delta Theta Chi plans to have their annual 

garage sale in April to benefit Lubbock 

Meals on Wheels. This sale raised 

$10,000 for Lubbock Meals on Wheels 

last year so it is obviously very important 

to our fundraising efforts. The amount 

of merchandise and massive number of 

shoppers has made it impractical for the 

sale to continue to be held at a private 

residence. A vacant commercial building 

in a high traffic area would be ideal. 

Anyone that may be able to help with

This lawn treatment will establish healthy root growth and food storage through

Small Groups Can Make a Big Difference 

Thank you to the Pirates of the Plains 

Parrot Head Club for collecting over 

900 individual food items for use in the 

weekend meal program. Another group 

from Industrial Molding Corporation 

held a walk at Charles Guy Park last fall 

and raised $2600 for Lubbock Meals 

on Wheels. Thanks also to Bridal Service 

Associates for donating over $2300 

from their annual Bridal Fair. These 

are impressive examples of what small 

groups of people can accomplish when 

they work together. If you have a group 

that would like to do something great 

this year, please keep Lubbock Meals on 

Wheels in mind because you can make

Please bring recyclable aluminum cans to Lubbock Meals on Wheels. Regular trips are made to recycle 

these materials, and the money received provides funds for programs. In the future, Lubbock Meals on 

Wheels hopes to have a recycle trailer on site, but until then, you can still help the environment 

and Lubbock Meals on Wheels by bringing your aluminum cans to 2304-34th 

Street during office hours, Monday – Friday, 8a.m.-4:30p.m.

The Pet Food program continues to feed the dogs and cats of meal recipients. These 

pets provide valuable companionship for their homebound owners so thank you to

Seasonal Surprises 

Once again, Lubbock Meals on Wheels completed the Twelve Days of Christmas 

Project. Thanks to the hard work of various schools, businesses, and organizations, 

the clients of Lubbock Meals on Wheels received a different special treat on each of 

the twelve working days prior to the Christmas holiday. Items included calendars, 

puzzles, edible goodies, as well as personal and household necessities. Pets were not 

forgotten as each animal on the Pet Program received a Christmas treat bag. Thank

The frozen quiche project was hugely successful during the holidays but please remember 

that our quiches are available throughout the year. We also offer quiche gift certificates 

which allow the recipient to pick out the flavor of their choice and pick up the quiche whenever 

convenient. These delicious, cheesy quiches are perfect for bridal or baby showers, a 

special Valentine meal, a weekend brunch or just whenever you want a great and simple meal 

for your family. All you do is place your order; pick up at our office; pop it into the oven and 

enjoy! These 10-inch, frozen, ready-to bake quiches come in five varieties including Quiche 

Mexicana (vegetarian), Ham & Cheese, Spinach & Mushroom (vegetarian), Italian Sausage, 

and Quiche Florentine (spinach and bacon). Quiches are $12.99 plus tax or two for $25.00 

plus tax and can be ordered by phone, fax, mail, or in person at our office. Keep us in mind 

when planning your next party, special occasion, or quiet evening at home and order one (or 

more) of these fabulous quiches. You’ll know that your purchase is not only feeding your 

family and friends but also the homebound, elderly, and disabled in your community as all
