There is nothing like a first-weekend-in-
May sweep of the Red Sox to shake off the
April depression of Orioles fans. Golly, that
felt good!
The sun is shining and there is hope and
opportunity in the world.
Let’s tear down the statue of Babe Ruth—
what has he done for us lately—and put up
Ty Wigginton instead! All Ty has done is
play every infield position except shortstop,
played pretty much full-time since April 10
and he is hitting a ton, leading the team in
average, on-base percentage and slugging. (I
am not counting Felix Pie here, because he
is laid up with a back injury, and we might
not see him till July or later.)
Miguel Tejada is coming on too. I can’t
say he’s the Miggy we knew and loved five
years ago, but he’s playing and adjusting
well at third base. It’s just that we might have
to put him on a Segway to run the bases by
the end of the season—his right leg looks
very painful.
Brian Matusz, the rookie on the starting
staff, leads the team in wins—in fact he is
the only starter besides Brad Bergesen, he
of the 10.57 ERA, to boast any wins at all.
Kevin Millwood and Jeremy Guthrie, who
have pitched very well, are winless.
All this is by way of saying: It’s going
to get better. It has to. If things keep going
as they have, the Orioles will finish 43-119.
That is just unthinkable. It can’t happen.
That is 1962 Mets territory, and we can’t go
there.
So while we dream of better days with
a complete lineup including Brian Roberts
and Felix Pie—that could happen in July,
perhaps—and a bullpen that is not quite as
awful as it has been so far, join us in our new
GuidePoint: Signs of hope at Camden Yards
Birds Box on our webpage, baltimoreguide.
com, and share your thoughts and impressions
of the 2010 Baltimore Orioles.
We asked a question last week—”Based
on the Orioles’ recent performances, where
do you think they’ll place in the American
League East this year” and reader Andy
Mindzak, an expert on all things statistical
and a real, optimistic, tomorrow’s-anotherday
fan, answered.
“Oddly enough, their issues this year revolve
around their offense. Usually were
used to hearing about their horrendous
pitching staff, but with Kevin Millwood
being pretty decent and Brian Matusz
pitching very well, the onus falls on their
offense,” he wrote. “Currently they are hitting
.241 as a team (24th in the league) and
are next to last in scoring with a God-awful
70 runs so far this year (that’s 3.18 runs per
game if you’re counting at home).
“If you want to get technical (you don’t really
have a choice, because I’m going there)
they are hitting a pathetic .193 with runners
in scoring position which is dead last in all
of baseball. I think once Brian Roberts
comes back (hopefully sooner than later,
although he seems to be having some setbacks
with his stomach) he can spark that
offense. Adam Jones isn’t helping matters
much with his .204 average, and when
Ty Wigginton is your team leader in average,
you know something isn’t right. Nick
Markakis seems to be turning his early
season slump around, so hopefully that will
spread throughout the team. Let’s keep our
fingers crossed!!!!!”
Fun question of the week: Since the Orioles
swept Red Sox Nation last weekend,
have we proved once and for all that steamed
crabs are better than boiled lobstah
Dypski Park revisited: Renewal ahead for vacant tot lot
by Mary Helen Sprecher
newsroom@baltimoreguide.com
To look at Dypski Park from the outside,
things haven’t changed much. However, say
organizers, the groundwork is being laid.
The last time the park, located at the corner
of S. Ellwood Avenue and Boston Street,
was the focus of any concerted media attention
was back in late January, when a community
meeting was being planned to discuss
the multiple problems with the site.
Neighbors had reported that they no longer
went into the park, despite the fact that in
spring of 2007, the area had received a refurbished
tot lot. And that meant the still-new
playground equipment, the climbing wall
and slides, even the shredded rubber safety
surface, were going unused. At least by the
Preakness frog hop will spring into action at Patterson Park
by Mary Helen Sprecher
newsroom@baltimoreguide.com
No leapfrogging in line, and don’t say you
weren’t toad that.
The Preakness Frog Hop, a staple in the
Southeast, is ready to kick off (or maybe
jump off) in Patterson Park. Everything
starts at noon on Wednesday, May 12, near
the Pulaski Monument, Eastern and Linwood
avenues.
Registration starts at 11 a.m. on the day
of the Frog Hop, and all frogs (and jockeys)
must be registered by 11:45 a.m.
Unlike the genuine event at Pimlico,
the Preakness Frog Hop in Patterson Park
lacks an infield, noisy bands and a group of
drunken spectators arguing about a shortage
of porta-pots.
Organizers are pretty happy about all
those shortcomings.
So what’s not to like about the frog hop
Not much. But here’s the rules:
*Only one (1) frog may be entered per
jockey, but two jockeys may share a *Any
frog entered must be at least 4 inches in
length from the nose to where the tail should
be (not counting the legs).
*Frog must be in good physical condition
and show no evidence of being kept in an inhumane
fashion. Note: That means all frogs
must be kept wet.
*Don’t be a hog; share a frog: If you have
more than one critter, please bring them so
that another child can participate.
*Trophies will be awarded to the first,
second, third and fourth place finishers. All
participants will receive a ribbon.
*In the event of extreme weather conditions,
the event will be held at the Mimi
DiPietro Ice Rink (Pratt Stree and Linwood
Avenue).
HOP TO IT-The Preakness Frog Hop, as much a part of the race for the
black-eyed susans as thoroughbreds and fancy hats, takes place next
week.
to forming a 501(c)3,” noted Marsh.
“From what I understand, it went full Marsh says that the Friends group’s immediate
goals “are to improve lighting,
cycle,”local resident Rae Smith noted in a
January interview with the Guide. “It had maintain communication with the city and
new mulch, new equipment, everything. homeless services, and to get a consensus
Now, people don’t want to use it because it for the park’s future appearance.”
has fallen into a state of disrepair again.” Dypski Park has been dealt a bad hand
According to Smith, the tot lot and an from the start in many respects. Its location
adjacent vacant lot had been serving as a (set back from the street) means that oversight
from the community and from police
loitering ground for the homeless, many of
whom were drifting over from the direction doesn’t come easily. Its layout (open on both
of the nearby Clarence “Du” Burns Arena. ends) allows it to be used as a thoroughfare.
“There’s also a lot of underage activity and Its limitations (its facilities include a children’s
pool, which will remain closed by
drug activity,” she noted, “and the garbage
cans are overflowing, so you have rodents.” budget cuts for the foreseeable future) mean
Community members have met three that it can’t attract a family clientele, even in
times in 2010 about the problem. A fourth warm weather.
meeting is schedule for next week and as Then there’s its legal status. Dypski Park
always, the community is invited.
is a formal part of the city’s parks system,
“The meeting is Tuesday, May 11 at the and depends on the Department of Recreation
and Parks for its upkeep. Therefore,
Marsh. “Our goals are to set up a Friends of residents don’t actually have formal investment
or ownership of the park, according to
Dypski Park Committee.”
The concerns of neighbors so far, says Kraft.
Marsh, “have included exterior maintenance “Dypski Park is a little different from
of ‘Du’ Burns arena, maintenance of Dypski some of the other small parks in the area,”
Park, how to deal with the homeless people Kraft said when the matter was first brought
camping under the pavilion at Dypski Park up in January. “Dypski is actually a city
and on the Boston Street side of ‘Du’ Burns. park, and the city will invest in it; it will provide
PM a Page certain 1amount of assistance.”
We 907 also S/SE.qxd:Layout gathered ideas from 1 3/23/10 those present 3:15
about the future of Dypski Park.”
He admitted that because of its small size
and its many drawbacks, Dypski remains
“an orphan stepchild” of the system.
Having a Friends group has the potential
to provide Dypski Park with more community
investment. In 2005, Canton volunteers
successfully rehabbed Two Rivers Park
after developing a Memoradum of Understanding
with the city.
No decisions have yet been made on
whether this Friends group will seek an
MOU, but such decisions may come up at
the upcoming meeting. According to Marsh,
there has been plenty to talk about so far.
“Some of the ideas that we have discussed
were closing the kids’ pool, changing the
pool to a fountain in which children could
play, keeping and improving maintenance
of the kids’ pool, starting a neighborhood
garden, replacing the park fencing, and the
possibility of forming a relationship with
FutureCare to assist in our efforts. There
were converstations indirectly related to the
park such as street lighting and alley gating.”
One step at a time, though, he adds: “I am
hoping that by the end of the May 11 meeting,
we will have volunteers and have the
Friends of Dypski Park formed.”
Note: The meeting will be held at the
Broom Factory on Tuesday, May 11, 7:15
p.m. Community members are welcome.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
Continued from page 6
Robbery
E. Fayette Street, 3300 block, April 29,
12:45 a.m. A man told police that a man he
did not know had approached him, grabbed
his shirt and said, “Give me your money.”
The man told him, “I don’t have any.” The
suspect tried to pull him down the street,
and the man resisted. The suspect punched
him, ripped his pants off and took $100
from him.
Pulaski Highway, 3200 block, April 29, 11
p.m. A man told police that two men had
grabbed him from behind and robbed him
of his wallet containing his driver’s license
and $450 cash.
Fawn Street, 900 block, April 28, 10:15
p.m. A woman told police that she had gone
out to dinner with an ex-boyfriend who then
wanted to go back to her house with him.
The woman told the man no, but he forced
his way into her house. They argued. He
shoved her around, then took her phone and
internet card. The woman said she was calling
the police, he replied “They’ll never find
your phone, it’ll be at the bottom of the bay.”
Police went to the suspect’s house, retrieved
the phone and internet card and arrested
him.
Aliceanna Street, 800 block, April 27,
2:15 p.m. A woman entered a clothing store,
grabbed four dresses and ran toward the
front door. An employee tried to stop the
woman, who dropped one of the dresses as
she fled. She jumped into a four-door burgundy
Acura and drove off. The employee
took down the license tag number and give
it to the police.
E. Fayette Street, 2500 block, April 26,
2:47 p.m. A man told police that two men,
approximately in their 20s, had pulled a
handgun and ordered him to give up money.
The man said, “All I got is nine dollars,”
then ran off.
Big Foot, above, would love to follow you home.
really adorable.
During the month of May BARCS is participating
in the Baltimore 500 Race to Save
Lives and is waiving the adoption fees for all
cats and kittens through May 31. Included
with the adoption are spay/neuter surgery;
DINING OUT
Eastern House goes Far Eastern
by Jacqueline Watts
editor@baltimoreguide.com
People who haven’t been through Highlandtown
for a while are in for a surprise
when they stop by Eastern House, a favorite
for decades for its satisfying, comforting
Greek and American menu, its friendly,
attentive waitresses and the warm greeting
of the Antonas family who owned and ran
the restaurant for more than 40 years.
The restaurant looks the same, with its
green awning and classic front on Eastern
Avenue, and inside, it has the same booths
and tables and the same prints on the walls.
But it is now the Eastern House Asian Bistro,
the menu is mainly Thai and Chinese
with touches of Japanese and Vietnamese,
and it boasts a sushi bar.
It was a bit of a culture shock, but the locals
are getting used to it. The lunch hour is
getting livelier, and people are enjoying the
classic dishes like Sesame Chicken ($6.50
for lunch, $10.95 for dinner) and Mongolian
Beef ($6.95, $11.95). Lunches come with a
nice crispy Vietnamese spring roll and fried
rice.
The preparations are middle-of-the-road,
tuned to Western tastes, and the portions are
plentiful, which should translate into success
down the road.
We stopped by for lunch recently and
tried some soup, some spring rolls, some
stir-fry and some salad and walked away
pretty happy.
The teenager along with us ordered the
teriyaki chicken, which she pronounced
“good, with just the right amount of sauce.”
The chicken was marinated in a slightly
sweet sauce, sliced very thin and served
with steamed vegetables—broccoli, carrot,
sprouts and a snow pea or two.
She really enjoyed the spring roll, which
was fried very crispy and served
We also tried the Buddha’s Feast, vegetables
and firm tofu stir-fried in a sweet-salty
brown sauce, and the pad Thai, which is the
national dish of Thailand, at least as far as
Americans are concerned—think of it as the
Thai version of chow mein.
Pad Thai translates to “Thai noodles,”
and that’s what this dish was—rice noodles
Developer lends land at St. Stan’s for gardeners
by Jacqueline Watts
editor@baltimoreguide.com
A Fells Point resident has arranged with
the developer of the old St. Stanislaus Parish
property to turn part of the site into a
community garden until work begins. The
community garden will be available for this
growing season.
Kathleen Haller, who lives and operates
an antique shop, Along the Way, near the St.
Stanislaus property on Aliceanna Street, approached
developer Larry Silverstein with
the idea.
St. Stan’s, as the locals call it, closed on
Easter Sunday 2000. Most of the parish
buildings were torn down two years ago.
Since then, Haller says, “every time I walk
past that plot I daydream about a garden.”
Silverstein readily agreed to lend the
neighborhood some land for a garden.
The developer said he was enthusiastic
about the plan, and that it complements Big
City Farms, another business that he owns
that builds urban greenhouses.
He intends to install a greenhouse for use
by New Century Montessori School, which
will open in the old church building in the
fall. The children can learn to grow and harvest
their own vegetables.
He has agreed to clear the land, a 35-by50-
foot parcel which is behind the old church
and hall off of Regester Street.
“When they demolished the old gym
there was a whole lot of construction rubble
and cracked bricks and things like that,” said
Haller, “and they just shoved everyting into
a hole back there.”
Silverstein has offered a Bobcat front
loader and operator to clear the plot and
level it out, and he says he will try to provide
a better planting bed. “It needs topsoil and
compost,” he said. Right now it’s just brick
and rubble.”
Haller said that a couple of residents have
emailed her already about setting up a garden
plot. Since she contacted Silverstein
COMING SOON-The land around what used to be St. Stanislaus Parish in
Fells Point will be used for a community garden. Photo by Jacqueline Watts
only a week ago, she has had little time to
plan. “I feel like we’re just doing things as
things come up,” she said. “It’s like a little
‘Field of Dreams.’ Parcel it off and they will
come.”
She said that she has considered having
one big garden with everyone collaborating
on it, or dividing the 35-by-50-foot plot into
parcels, and is leaning toward parcels.
The garden will have a water source and
full sun. The only uncertaintly is the soil,
and if the group can’t get the best topsoil,
well, herbs grow well in poor soil.
“I am looking forward to this,” said
Haller. “I am a very dig-in-the-earth kind
of person.” Since moving to Fells Point, she
has had to content herself with a container
garden on her deck. “It’s all right but it’s not
the same,” she said.
Call Haller, 410-276-4461 or email atway@verizon.net
to sign up for summer
gardening. Work, and perhaps planting, begins
the weekend of May 14-16.
