Police have a photograph of a “person
of interest” in the fatal cutting of a man at
the Inner Harbor shortly after the July 4
fireworks. Police ask for the public’s help
in identifying the man, who might be a
suspect in the murder.
“Somebody knows this guy,” said
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake during
a press conference held yesterday.
Anyone with information about the
man, pictured at right, should call
1-866-7LOCKUP (756-2587).
Police said that the cutting was the
result of two fights that occurred on a
walkway by McCormick and Schmick
restaurant on the east side of the Inner
Police seek information on SE assaults
Pair of youths is attacking middle-aged and elderly residents
BY MARY HELEN SPRECHER
NEWSROOM@BALTIMOREGUIDE.COM
Police are seeking information that may
help them find those behind a rash of violent
attacks and robberies, many of them
against senior citizens. The assaults, which
have taken place around Highlandtown
and Patterson Park in the past month, have
many similar factors, according to Lt.
Richard Gibson of the Southeastern
District Detective Unit.
“We’re seeing two male suspects who
have been attacking men age 50 and
up,” Lt. Gibson said. “They attack from
behind and strike the person with a
blunt object. Once the person is down
on the ground, they continue to beat
them before robbing them.”
The suspects have been described as
two black males, both with thin builds
and both with close-cropped hair or a
shaved head. The suspects are described
as being between 5’8” and 5’11”. One
appears to be in his late teens to early
20s; the other is consistently described as
being in his teens. Both wear white
T-shirts and shorts described as khaki or
dark fabric such as denim.
In most cases, the suspects took the
cash their victims happened to be carrying,
which was less than $50, before
running off.
Robberies have occurred in the 3500
block of Fleet Street (84-year-old victim),
the 300 block of S. Bouldin Street (61-yearold
victim), the 3200 block of Gough
Street (a 53-year-old victim), and the 2100
block of E. Baltimore Street.
Lt. Gibson said that while it is not the
intent of the police to make people fearful
of their surroundings, they are encouraging
seniors to be aware of goings-on in
their neighborhood.
“If you’re out walking, try to walk in
groups,” he said. “Keep to well-lit areas. If
you’re feeling threatened, call us at the
district. We can help.”
The number of the Southeastern
District is 410-396-2422. The number
BREAKING NEWS
Harbor basin shortly after the 9:30 fireworks
show ended.
Police said that Joe Callow, age 26, was
stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle.
He was taken to the University of Maryland
Shock-Trauma Center where he died later
that night.
Callow lived in Alabama and was visiting
family in Baltimore.
According to Police Commissioner
Frederick Bealefeld, Callow’s brother
was involved in a fight with several
other men outside McCormick and
Schmick’s. That fight was broken up, but
then Callow “re-engaged” the suspects,
and one of them swung a broken bottle
at him, cutting his neck.
for assistance.
It is possible to get rides home by calling
for help, according to Lt. Gibson.
“There are lots of avenues if you feel
threatened or unsafe,” he said.
Because criminals often live in or near
the areas they victimize, the police believe
there is a good chance someone close by
Citizens and cops
depend on each other
BY JACQUELINE WATTS
EDITOR@BALTIMOREGUIDE.COM
You hear it all the time at community
meetings and you roll your eyes. But it’s
true: The cops can’t be everywhere.
We welcome comments
on our website!
www.baltimoreguide.com
RE
Police Commissioner Fred Bealefeld
had nearly 600 cops—city cops, State
Police, MTA cops, MVA cops, you
name it, probably a crossing guard or
two—stationed around the waterfront
on Monday night for the city’s Fourth of
July fireworks celebration.
And still a man died in what Bealefeld
called “a stupid, senseless fight,” and a
little boy was hit by a stray bullet. The
little boy is going to recover, thank God.
There were between 70,000 and
80,000 people downtown for the fireworks
by official count, and more
around the waterfront from Federal
Hill to Canton. Police arrested 30
people for various crimes and stupidity
and took 20 teenagers to the curfew
center.
They are looking for two more people
to arrest.
If you have seen this fellow, or
know him, or know of him, call
1-866-7LOCKUP (756-2587). Help
rid the streets of a knucklehead.
And if you know, or hear of some
idiot who was firing his gun in the air
near Harborplace, call 1-866-7LOCK-
UP (756-2587) and rid the streets of
Wouldn’t it be great if everyone would:
- Take their shopping cart back to the store entrance
- Actually come to a full stop at stop signs
- Slow down while driving in the neighborhoods
- Hang up their hand-helds while walking – so to greet
others
- Hang up their hand-helds while strolling their children
and focus on them only
- Hang up their hand-helds while driving
- Let you go first
and Yours
OUR OPINION and Yours
- Use turn signals so pedestrians as well as others know
where you are going
Police seriously want to talk to this
guy about the fistfight that ended in
the death of a man after the July 4 fireworks
display.
another knucklehead.
Speaking of knuckleheads, there are
two roaming around Highlandtown and
Patterson Park, and brave and enterprising
youths that they are, they’re attacking
middle-aged and elderly people and robbing
them.
They jumped an 84-year-old man in
the 3500 block Fleet Street, for crying out
loud, and other younger victims on Bouldin
Street, on Gough, and on Baltimore
Street in Butchers Hill.
They attack their victims from behind,
hit them in the back of the head
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Wouldn't it be good if...
and continue to beat them as they lie on
the ground. Then they rob the victims of
whatever they can rummage from their
pockets and bags.
If you see these youths, who are described
as black males, thin builds, close
cropped hair or shaved head, between
5’8” and 5’11” tall, call 911. If you know
who they are call Lt. Richard Gibson or
Det. Bomani Murphy of the Southeastern
District Detective Unit at 410-396-2499.
They want these boys badly.
We depend on the cops to keep some
kind of order in this town, and they depend
on us to help, because they can’t be
everywhere and they can’t possibly see
everything that goes on.
When it comes right down to it,
we’re responsible for our own safety.
When we see something—from
a street mugging to dumping to drug
dealing and don’t report it, we help
the problem spread and fester. Crime
grows in the dark. When citizens act
as eyes and ears for the cops, we help
make crime shrivel and shrink.
If we care about each other, if we want
the best for Baltimore, then if we know
something we will tell what we know.
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake had
it right at yesterday’s press conference
about the Inner Harbor crimes: the people
who commit these kinds of senseless,
violent acts are “cowards.”
And Commissioner Bealefeld had it
right when he said the city has to do a
better job of holding people accountable
for the “crazy things they do.”
Let’s help them out if we can.
- Always act like they care about others
- Support neighborhood churches with their attendance
- Plant more trees
- Pick up trash in front of their home and that of the
elderly
- Don’t tailgate
- Put water in your birdbath
- Pray for our troops and volunteers, firemen and police
who are preserving our freedom and safety.
- Continue these things until Christmas and after make
them New Years resolutions.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 2011 THE BALTIMORE GUIDE 5
The next-best thing to Bavaria
Cafe Einstein is work of genius
There are plenty of coffee houses
around. In fact there are so many of them
that it’s hard to tell them apart. That is
not a problem with Cafe Einstein,
which opened a couple of months ago at
1709 Eastern Avenue.
Cafe Einstein is a Eurocafe—sleek,
serene, comfortable, friendly, hung with
original artwork, and serving German
food with a delicious and healthy twist.
If your idea of German food is sauerbraten,
sausage and liters of beer toted to
your table by the St. Pauli Girl, you owe
it to yourself, and perhaps to the German
people, to visit Cafe Einstein. It’s an eyeopener.
The dishes are flavorful and healthy.
You can have lunch at Cafe Einstein
and avoid the carbohydrate coma after.
And Claudia Phillips, the owner-chefmaitre
d’-waitress and who-knowswhat-else,
will take very good care of
you—she is warm, friendly and informative,
eager to describe and present
her dishes. We were very relaxed and
happy after an hour there.
Claudia is from Ulm, a town in Southern
Germany which boasts one of the
great research universities in the world,
and was once home to Albert Einstein—
hence the name.
Carbs are well represented on the
menu—they’re just not everything on the
menu. The goulash, which is a deliciously
stewed traditional beef stew, comes with
light little nuggets of spaetzle, which is a
kind of dumpling. It’s great stuff to sop
up the goulash sauce.
We also tried the pancake sushi
($9.50), a thin buckwheat pancake rolled
around spinach and Brie cheese, baked
and sliced to resemble a sushi platter.
You can order it several ways—at Claudia’s
suggestion we had some ham with
the spinach and cheese, and were very
happy with the choice. She also makes
it with sliced bratwurst, or you can have
it vegetarian.
Also at her suggestion, we got a salad
sampler for the side dish. We had little
dollops of potato salad—light, sweet
and vinegary and nothing like the heavy
American version, and karottesalat,
grated vibrant orange carrots, dressed
similarly with sweet and sour. The rote
beetsalat, or beet salad, was absolutely
wonderful, fresh roasted beets gently
pickled and grated, the earthy taste of the
beets a contrast with the pickling. If your
only experience with beets is canned or
bottled, try these. They might just convert
you.
I could have made a meal of the salads,
and vegans certainly can. There is no
mayo and no sour cream on the salads,
just a light sweet-and-sour dressing.
For vegetarians-not-vegans there is
a nice cheese plate, with Brie, herbed
chevre and Gorgonzola for $9.50.
Birds House
WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 2011 THE BALTIMORE GUIDE 11
By Andrew Mindzak
Congratulations are in order for Orioles’
catcher Matt Wieters, who will
make his first appearance in the All-Star
Game! Selected to the 2011 American
League squad, Wieters is having himself
a nice season so far. The former first
round pick is hitting .262, with seven
home runs and 33 runs batted in, but his
work behind the plate has been catching
attention as well as would-be base stealers.
Halfway through the season, Wieters
has thrown out over 20 runners trying to
steal, and has made only two errors behind
the plate. That’s how Wieters locked
up his All Star roster spot.
There is one more person who needs
our help: Adam Jones.
Jonesy made the list of five players
whom the fans can send to the game. His
competition is Paul Konerko of the Chicago
White Sox, Victor Martinez of the
Detroit Tigers, Alex Gordon of the Kansas
City Royals, and Ben Zobrist of the
Tampa Bay Rays.
Sure, those guys are having good
years, but does the American League
really need another power hitting first
baseman? Nope. Do they need another
catcher (they already have three)? Nope.
Jones has more power and speed than
Gordon, so that’s a no-brainer. As for
Zobrist, well, he plays on the Rays and is
only hitting .261, and we don’t need any
more Rays in the game!
Jones is having a very good year, hitting
.283 with 13 home runs and 46 runs
batted in as well as providing an awesome
defensive presence out in center
field.
Jonesy made one of the best catches I
have ever seen against Seattle, going full
steam into the wall with his back to home
plate, leaping and making an over-theshoulder
catch. Unreal!
As deserving as Wieters and Jones are
of making the All Star team, there is one
more player I feel got a big fat snub: J.J.
Hardy. The fans voted in Derek Jeter, and
after his amazing first half, why shouldn’t
they? And yes, that was sarcasm.
This season Hardy is hitting .294 with
12 home runs and 31 runs batted in. Yes,
he missed some time, but when he has the
third highest HR total amongst shortstops
in 80 fewer at bats, he deserves to be in
there. Jeter is banged up and is hitting
.256 and really should give the start to
Cleveland’s Asdrubal Cabrera, who is
having a much better year.
The bottom line: Hardy got robbed.
Other random notes: Nick Markakis
had his 19-game hit streak snapped
against the Atlanta Braves as Jair Jur-
(sounds like a Star Wars muppet,
doesn’t he?) threw a one-hitter
against the O’s. But Nick followed
up that game with a three-hit performance
the next day and then a fivehit
performance the game after that.
Has anyone seen a power show
like the one Mark Reynolds is putting
on? In his last five games he has
hit six home runs, and has hit five in
the month of July already. For those
of you keeping score at home, he hit
five home runs in all of May. Right
now he has 20 on the season, and
from the start of June until now, he
has raised his average from .190 to
.229. This is exactly why Baltimore
went after him.
And as for Justin Duchscherer, let
me see, my notes are around here
somewhere…oh wait, he’s still on
the DL.
Stay tuned for next week as I will
roll out my thoughts on next year’s
plan for the O’s.
VIOLENCE AT HARBOR
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
Bealefeld said that the photo police
have of the suspect was taken by a witness
with a cell phone, and he thanked
the anonymous witnesses who came forward
and spoke to police.
Police are also looking for information
on someone who fired a stray
bullet that struck a four-year-old
boy at the corner of Pratt and Light
streets shortly after the fireworks.
The boy was taken to Johns Hopkins
Hospital and treated and is expected
to recover fully.
Bealefeld said that a man ran to a police
sergeant at the northwest corner of
Pratt and Light streets near the McKeldin
Fountain and said that his son had been
shot.
The man told the sergeant that he and
his fiance were crossing Pratt Street going
north when they heard a “pop” and
his son cried out.
He said the boy had a gunshot wound
that entered near the top of his right thigh
and ended near his right knee.
Bealefeld said that there were many
police stationed at the intersection and
that none of them heard anything they
thought was a gunshot.
He also noted the downward
trajectory of the boy’s wound,
and said police were investigating
whether the bullet that hit him
might have been fired into the air.
“There was no ballistic evidence anywhere,”
said Bealefeld. He also said that
surveillance cameras in and near the intersection
did not record any unusual
movement in the crowd, as would have
happened if someone were firing a gun
in the crowd.
He also said there were no cars passing
by, as motor traffic near the Inner Harbor
had been shut off for the fireworks
display.
Rawlings-Blake was clearly infuriated
by the incidents. “Thanks to the senseless
and outrageous acts of a very few individuals,
what would have been a great
weekend for our city has come to an end
with terrible, terrible news,” she said.
“It is simply outrageous for anyone
to bring a weapon into downtown,
simply outrageous for anyone
to bring a weapon into the fireworks
display,” she said. “The people who
engage in these terrible and senseless
acts of violence are cowards.”
Bealefeld said that Callow’s death was
due to a “stupid, senseless fight” and said
the city would “hold people accountable
for the crazy things they do.”
As for the shooting of the four-yearold
boy, Bealefeld said that “there is a lot
of work to determining what happened
there” and that the incident was “frankly
inexplicable.”
