Research design,<br />

data and m<strong>et</strong>hods<br />

The research draws upon a combination <strong>of</strong><br />

qu<strong>al</strong>itative and quantitative m<strong>et</strong>hods and<br />

tools. Semi-structured, key informant interviews<br />

were conducted in order to gain an in-depth<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> region<strong>al</strong> economic development<br />

and sector specific dynamics. Soci<strong>al</strong> n<strong>et</strong>work an<strong>al</strong>ysis<br />

(SNA) was used to understand interactions b<strong>et</strong>ween<br />

economic development <strong>of</strong>fici<strong>al</strong>s in the region and<br />

their interactions with individu<strong>al</strong>s in the loc<strong>al</strong> food,<br />

clean technologies, and creative and cultur<strong>al</strong> sectors.<br />

Initi<strong>al</strong> preparation included an extensive review <strong>of</strong><br />

the academic literature and secondary data. Primary<br />

research was conducted b<strong>et</strong>ween April and October<br />

2011. All research instruments used in this study have<br />

been reviewed and approved by the University <strong>of</strong><br />

Waterloo’s Office <strong>of</strong> Research Ethics.<br />

Relationships b<strong>et</strong>ween the University <strong>of</strong> Waterloo<br />

and loc<strong>al</strong> community partners provided the research<br />

team with opportunities to leverage pre-existing<br />

connections with leaders and other important<br />

individu<strong>al</strong>s in private, public and civil soci<strong>et</strong>y<br />

organizations, as well as the economic development<br />

community. Through their research and community<br />

engagement, the senior research team members<br />

have an intimate understanding <strong>of</strong> the sectors under<br />

study. Addition<strong>al</strong>ly, the research team attended loc<strong>al</strong><br />

events and trade fairs, participated in sector-based<br />

initiatives, and attended relevant provinci<strong>al</strong> and<br />

nation<strong>al</strong> conferences to understand current region<strong>al</strong><br />
