and unmarked, about very fine, the rarest date of the entire sovereign series £50000-60000
Reputedly the second finest known depending upon whether or not the proof mentioned by Spink in 1950 exists.
This piece ex. J. J. Cullimore Allen (author of the book Sovereigns of the British Empire, London 1965), sold at Spink Auction
Sale 90 (March 1992, lot 334) as ‘The Property of a Lady’. It is a great rarity and it was considered to be the finest known,
until a few years ago when one surfaced in extremely fine condition and was sold at auction. This currently resides in a
collection in the U.S.A and is valued at around £150000. We have only handled one other piece a few years ago in about
fine, that sold in excess of £30000. There are a couple of other specimens; one mounted and one pierced. This truly is the
best piece currently available and will doubtless be highly sought after.
