DATA SET CHANGE CONTROL PROCEDURE<br />

This paper gives notification of changes to be included in the NHS Data Dictionary & Manual and the<br />

NHS CDS Manual as appropriate. These will be consolidated into the publications in due course.<br />

Summary of Changes:<br />

The NHS Data Dictionary & Manual has been updated to replace the <strong>UKCC</strong> with the<br />

<strong>NMC</strong> (Nursing and Midwifery Council)<br />

The NHS <strong>In<strong>for</strong>mation</strong> <strong>Standards</strong> <strong>Board</strong> (NHS ISB) is responsible <strong>for</strong> approving in<strong>for</strong>mation standards.<br />

The NHS ISB is supported <strong>by</strong> the Management <strong>In<strong>for</strong>mation</strong> <strong>Standards</strong> <strong>Board</strong>, the Clinical <strong>In<strong>for</strong>mation</strong><br />

<strong>Standards</strong> <strong>Board</strong> and the Technical <strong>Standards</strong> <strong>Board</strong>.<br />

The packaging of standards document is under review. Any changes will be notified in due course.<br />

Background:<br />

On the 1 April 2002 the <strong>UKCC</strong> ceased to exist. The successor body is called the<br />

Nursing and Midwifery Council (<strong>NMC</strong>). Instances of <strong>UKCC</strong> have there<strong>for</strong>e been<br />

removed from the NHS Data Dictionary & Manual and replaced with a reference to<br />

the <strong>NMC</strong>.<br />

The Nursing and Midwifery Council is an organisation set up to ensure nurses,<br />

midwives and health visitors provide high standards of care to their patients and<br />

clients.<br />

'Consultant Code - GMC'. For GPs working as Consultants, the GP's GMC code<br />

should be used, see data item note <strong>for</strong> GENERAL MEDICAL PRACTITIONER<br />

(CODE OF REGISTERED/REFERRING GMP).<br />

The GMC code is an eight character alphanumeric code based on the GMC<br />

registration number; the first character will be the letter `C'; characters 2 to 7 will be<br />

the doctor's GMC number, see NHS Administrative Codes, Practitioner Codes.<br />

If a dental consultant is not registered with the GMC, the Dentists' Practice <strong>Board</strong><br />

number has to be used prefixed with D.<br />

All MIDWIFE EPISODES are identified in the Admitted Patient Care CDS and HES<br />

<strong>by</strong> a pseudo main consultant specialty code, 560, see Specialty Function Codes. A<br />

default code is used in the CONSULTANT CODE field to show that a MIDWIFE is<br />

the responsible professional. Note that the midwife's own code is not used.<br />

All NURSING EPISODES are identified in the Admitted Patient Care CDS and HES<br />
