COMMUNICATIONS RECEIVED<br />

Scientists (ITC-Ghent) and obtained his Ph.D. degree<br />

under the supervision of Prof. Dr. ir. C. Sys at Ghent<br />

University in December 1987. After his Ph.D. promotion<br />

Mitiku Haile went back to Ethiopia and joined the then<br />

Alemaya University as Assistant Professor of Soil Science.<br />

Prof. Dr. Mitiku Haile took several academic positions like<br />

Chairperson of the Faculty of Agriculture, Associate Dean<br />

of Graduate School and Academic Vice-President. In 1993<br />

he moved to Mekelle to establish the College of Dryland<br />

Agriculture and Natural <strong>Resources</strong> which formed the basis<br />

for Mekelle University. He led the new institution as a<br />

Dean and President for 18 years. Links were established<br />

with several national and international universities.<br />

Through support from VLIR-Own Initiative projects and a<br />

VLIR-IUC programme several Mekelle University staff<br />

members were trained for their master and Ph.D. degrees at<br />

Flemish universities. Tremendous publications were also<br />

produced in collaboration with Belgian Professors. Spinoffs<br />

and value additions were registered for different<br />

research projects undertaken jointly and important<br />

conferences were conducted on thematic issues.<br />

PERSONALIA<br />

Nguyen Thanh Tuan (M.Sc. PLR 2009) from Vietnam or<br />

actually working at Geoscience Department of the Vietnam<br />

National Museum of Nature, Vietnamese Academy of<br />

Science and Technology in Vietnam became the proud<br />

father of a newborn baby son “Nguyen Tran Manh” on<br />

November 26, 2011. Congratulations!<br />

Since July 2011, Prof. Dr. Mitiku Haile is posted at<br />

UNESCO in Paris in the capacity of Deputy Permanent<br />

Delegate of Ethiopia. He is still attached to Mekelle<br />

University and is periodically advising and promoting<br />

M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.<br />
