LETTER FROM THE CHAIR 

2012 was an exciting year for America SCORES. In May, 

students from our programs in Washington, DC, St. Louis, and 

Denver were invited to the White House to participate in the 

Let’s Move Soccer Clinic with First Lady Michelle Obama 

and Major League Soccer Champions LA Galaxy. Our 

students were thrilled to meet the First Lady and their soccer 

idols and show off their leadership and sportsmanship skills. 

Since our founding in 1994, America SCORES has been 

dedicated to improving student health, academic 

achievement and civic engagement. Nearly 20 years after 

our inception, we are proud of our standing as the largest 

and most effective program in the U.S. to use soccer, poetry, 

and service learning to inspire students from low-income 

backgrounds to live healthy and civically engaged lifestyles. 

As we continue to develop as a national organization, we 

are indebted to the loyal coaches, teachers, and volunteers 

who work tirelessly to serve and support our students. On 

behalf of our students and their families, I extend my thanks 

to our supporters who make it possible for America SCORES 

to make a difference in the lives of nearly 8,000 children 

nationwide. Because of supporters like you, children like 

Vanessa from Maple Elementary in Seattle are able to say:

Our progress makes us more determined than ever to have 

an impact on the lives of children in our inner city

SOCCER AT THE WHITE HOUSE 

“I was like, ‘Wow, this is the President,” 

Deontrel said. He couldn’t believe his 

eyes as he sat just a few feet away from 

President Barack Obama. 

Deontrel was one of 34 America SCORES 

students from DC, Denver and St. Louis 

invited to the White House to recognize 

the LA Galaxy’s MLS Cup championship. Students were selected based 

upon their sportsmanship, leadership and commitment to America 

SCORES and to school. 

Serena Muhammad, Executive Director of America SCORES St. Louis, 

said the students gave Presient Obama a rousing applause when he 

entered the room. Following his warm welcome, The First Lady talked to 

our students about the importance of living healthy lifestyles and about 

the Let’s Move initiative, dedicated to solving the problem of childhood 

obesity. 

America SCORES uses soccer as a tool to encourage fitness and inspires 

a life-long appreciation for athletics and healthy behaviors. America 

SCORES participants get ten times more exercise than the national 

average, and seven out of ten students who start out overweight 

achieve a normal weight within one year. 

“She said she was happy to see us. She knew we were from all around 

the country and that the State Room was where they had their special 

guests and that we were their special guests,” Deontrel said. 

The First Lady left the students with a final message of “Eat your 

vegetables!” and opened up the floor for our students to ask greats like 

Landon Donovan, David Beckham, and other Galaxy players about 

their soccer careers. Donovan spoke about the importance of knowing 

the foods you’re putting in your body and their effect on your athletic 

performance. 

From the First Lady’s message about “learning to lose,” to Donovan’s 

words about learning to take care of themselves, the students won’t 

soon forget their memorable day and the words their heroes bestowed 

upon them. 

UNDEFEATED 

In Chicago, at Pope Elementary School, the 

majority of students had never played soccer 

before they joined the America SCORES program 

a few years ago. The first few seasons for the 

Pope Girls Team were difficult - not a lot of goals 

scored and not a lot of games won. The girls had 

trouble connecting and working together on the 

field. Despite the lack of wins, they continued to 

embody the SCORES core values of teamwork, 

leadership and most importantly, commitment. 

Gradually, they improved from practice to 

practice and season to season. With lots of hard 

work and dedication, the final stage of their 

metamorphosis was complete. This past fall 

season, they become the first America SCORES 

Chicago team to go undefeated and were duly 

crowned league champions! 

Their new sense of pride was infectious. Their 

league trophy is now sitting in the Main Office at 

their school, so each person who walks into the 

office sees that the Pope girls are a true example 

that hard work pays off.

From North to South, from West to East, 

IMAGINATION IS RELEASED! 

Jose R., an 11 year old from Dallas, stood beneath 

the spotlight of Harlem’s World Famous Apollo 

Theater, "where stars are born and legends are 

made." He filled the house with laughter by standing 

legs-crossed while performing his poem, “I Gotta 

Go,” with a straight face. 

Jose is one of thousands across the country who 

spend almost 50 hours learning how to read, 

interpret, write, and perform poetry as part of the fall 

season of America SCORES. In each city, the season 

concludes with a Community Poetry SLAM! that 

showcases each student’s work and determines who 

will represent the city on the national stage. 

In December 2011, Jose won the hearts of the entire 

Dallas community Poetry SLAM! audience, both 

children and adults, when he performed his funny 

poem. He was one of 50 local contestants, among 

thousands competing nationwide, for an all-expenses 

paid trip to New York City. 

In April 2012, Jose met 29 of his ‘teammates’ from 

across the country and enjoyed soccer in Central 

Park, a stroll in Times Square, a 

feast on Wall Street (provided 

by Harry’s Italian), and finally, 

the National Poetry SLAM! at 

the Apollo Theater. 

The culmination of weeks of 

writing and rehearsing, the 

evening celebrated the 

achievements of 

poet-athletes nationwide and 

the collective impact of our 

program across 14 cities. The 

evening featured celebrity 

host John Harkes (National 

Soccer Hall of Famer), guest 

of honor Chris Heck (New York 

Red Bulls), and a special 

musical performance by 

Psalm One.

ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES 

PSALM ONE’S 9-CITY TOUR 

In September 2011, female hip-hop artist Psalm One embarked 

on a nine-city tour for the ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ 

America SCORES, a mentorship program that helps songwriters 

connect and give back to the community. The tour kicked off in 

Milwaukee, stopped in Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, 

Washington, DC, Atlanta, New York, Boston, and concluded in 

Psalm’s hometown of Chicago. 

In each city, Psalm One spent three afternoons collaborating 

with America SCORES students to write and record an original 

song. Here’s what it was like at Knapp Elementary in Denver. 

“I taught them about self-expression and they 

shared their world with me,” - Psalm said. 

“We were talking about rappers, talking about music in general 

and their life in Denver. They all had so many ideas for me that I 

was really overwhelmed so I kept having this idea of gang, gang, 

gang. And I was like, what kind of gang can we be Because 

we’re clearly not going to be the traditional type, right I ended 

up focusing on a different kind of gang, cause that’s kind of 

what they were. They ganged up on me.” 

In June 2012, Psalm announced the release of Child Support, the 

collection of songs written and performed with America SCORES 

students, and released its first single, “Kids Right Now,” featuring 

rapper Mikkey Halsted. Released in September 25, 2012, all 

proceeds from the album benefit the ASCAP Songwriter 

Residency @ America SCORES. 

The ASCAP Foundation, a public charity dedicated to supporting 

music education and talent development, funds the program. 

DAY 1 

For the first day of their ASCAP Songwriter 

Residency @ America SCORES, both 

Knapp Elementary's SCORES boys and girls 

teams spent time getting to know Psalm 

One by asking her a lot of questions. After 

they got to know each other, Psalm let the 

poets pick their favorite beat and got to 

know the poets through their writing. She 

asked them to write about what they 

liked, about Denver, and about their 

school. After this first session, she took their 

writing home and used it to create her 

portion of the song. 

DAY 2 

The next day, Knapp Elementary’s teams 

created their sections of the 

collaboration. Participants got out their 

pencils and put thoughts to paper about 

what someone might say about them on 

their hundredth birthdays, positive 

behaviors that make them a "smart gang" 

and what they might tell an alien who 

came to their next soccer game. Psalm 

pulled examples from their writing to help 

create verses. Then they memorized it for 

their studio recording. 

DAY 3 

The poets-turned-rappers met Psalm for 

their last session, but this time they met at 

Side 3 Studios and were joined by sound 

engineers. Students took turns in front of 

the microphone and watched their 

headphone-wearing teammates. In a few 

hours, they finished recording their song, 

Smarter Gang.

ERVICE 

The Roxhill Elementary Boys Team from America SCORES Seattle investigated litter in 

their own community. They logged the amount of litter in their local park and identified 

the causes and effects of littering. The Team then participated in the White Center 

Community Development Association’s (WCCDA) “Spring Clean” Day. One of 22 

WCCDA projects, The Roxhill Park Litter Clean Up had help from several community 

members who made the park a better, cleaner place for all! 

Hayes Bilingual Elementary students from America SCORES Milwaukee visited an Urban 

Aquaponic Farm in Milwaukee's South Side. After learning more about the urban 

farming system, volunteers from Starbucks helped them build garden beds with 

construction materials, compost and harvest worms, and wash and decorate buckets 

for use on the farm. The students were able to see the work that goes into creating 

healthy foods and communities.

International soccer superstar Edwin van der Sar 

made a special appearance at an America 

SCORES NY Game Day. Following the Jamboree 

ceremony that recognized students for their 

outstanding teamwork, leadership and 

commitment, Van der Sar participated in 

scrimmages with the teams, and invited those 

awarded to take penalty shots against him. As an 

ambassador for the Laureus Sport for Good 

Foundation, he was there to launch a partnership 

with Up2Us’s Coach Across America program; the 

program provides 17 America SCORES coaches.

In September, U.S. Congressman (D-Ga) and civil 

rights leader, John Lewis, spent the afternoon with 

students at Coretta Scott King Young Women's 

Leadership Academy. He shared personal 

accounts of the civil rights marches with Dr. Martin 

Luther King, Jr. and explained how he continues to 

fight for equality in Washington, DC. 

Representative Lewis is among several political 

role models that visited and inspired America 

SCORES Atlanta during the year. Through a 

partnership with the Georgia Council of 

International Visitors, political figures from around 

the world came to talk to students about local, 

national and global issues and how they can 

facilitate change as children and as adults.

LEADING HEALTHY LIVES 

In Chicago, participants improved an average 25.56% in 

physical health as measured by a cardiovascular 

running test. 

In Milwaukee, the number of participants categorized as 

obese decreased by 9.5%. 

THE RESULT 

IS A TEAM OF CHILDREN WHO EXPERIENCE SUCCESS... 

In New York, participants ran an average of 34% further 

in a post-assessment than they did at the beginning of 

the season. 

BECOMING 

ENGAGED STUDENTS 

In Cleveland, 86% of parents believe that their child's 

school attendance has improved because they don't 

want to miss the America SCORES programming. 

In DC, the number of participants who like school and 

believe they will graduate increased by 18%. 

An evaluation by Educational Research Consultants 

determined that America SCORES LA elementary school 

students attend nine more days of school than their 

peers. 

In 2012, America SCORES was selected to join the 

American Graduate movement, a campaign presented 

by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to improve 

high school graduation rates. The campaign showcased a 

series of PSAs with poetry by poet-athletes in St. Louis and 

featured America SCORES on a national PBS broadcast as 

part of American Graduate Day.

In Seattle, an external evaluator found a significant 60% 

improvement in participants’ writing samples. 

In New England, participants improved in English 

Language Arts by 7.8 points as measured by the MCAS 

Test. 

In St. Louis, participants showed a 50% improvement in 

their writing (mastering the use of two out of four literary 

devices). 

In the Bay Area, 69% of participants positively changed 

in eight targeted behaviors.

Dear America SCORES, 

My time in America SCORES LA has been 

an amazing experience, one which has 

changed my life and made me the 

person I am today. Being a part of the 

program since I was in third grade has 

given me a better understanding of what 

it means to give back to my community, 

and the importance of self-confidence, as 

well as leadership. 

I recall, this past summer of 2011, having 

been given the opportunity to run our very 

own soccer clinic for cancer patients. The 

objective was for us, as alumni, to 

coordinate and run the entire sessions we 

had with the kids, and have the staff 

members run the routines and drills. 

Although, it was only a couple of sessions 

we had with the kids, I believe I can speak 

for the rest of the alumni group when I say 

the experience taught us to be 

considerate of others, it taught us about 

leadership and commitment, and 

ultimately, it taught me how brave and 

inspiring kids can actually be. The smiles 

and the gratitude the kids showed while 

going out there and simply being 

themselves made all the hard work and 

effort worth it. 

Life after America SCORES, while I’ve been 

at Marymount College, has shown me to 

have morals and ethics in everything I do. 

This semester we were given the 

opportunity to volunteer at a Boys & Girls 

Club, and every Wednesday that I was 

there reminded me of America SCORES 

and of all the good times I’ve shared with 

my fellow friends and family. I say family 

because that is precisely what the 

America SCORES LA staff has become to 

me. I want to thank them as well as my 

friends for having been there for me every 

step of the way, and if it weren’t for 

America SCORES LA, I have no idea where 

I’d be today.

DARLENNE, 

For six years, Darlenne participated in the America SCORES 

Program at the Donald McKay K-8 School in East Boston. Prior to 

this, Darlenne played pick-up soccer with friends and family, but 

hadn’t been part of an organized league. So when she had the 

chance to join the school’s team, she immediately signed up. 

Now, nine years later, not only is Darlenne the captain of East 

Boston High School’s varsity soccer team, she’s also the President 

of the National Honor Society, Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook, 

and Vice President of the Senior Class. 

“ 

America SCORES emphasized that school was very 

important. You had to do well in class to play soccer. It 

really taught me how to balance my school work and my 

extracurricular activities.” Darlenne said. 

This learning experience has clearly come in handy in high school 

as Darlenne remains active in an array of extracurricular activities 

and leadership positions. 

Darlenne is now a member of the 

America SCORES Boston Alumni 

Leadership Academy and still 

remains very active in the core 

program. She continues to referee for 

the elementary and middle school 

students and supports fundraising 

events years after her last season 

with SCORES. Darlenne has 

evolved into a leader in her 

community and a positive role 

model for the younger 

students in the program. 

As she applies to local 

colleges and 

universities, Darlenne 

still recalls trips she 

made to these schools 

as part of the 

SCORES 

program. 

However, rather 

than just a 

young elementary school 

student with a dream to 

someday attend college, 

she’s choosing between a 

number of schools and 

looking forward to a 

successful future.

CAMRYN 

Camryn, age 13, was looking for inspiration in his 

life. He needed a way to fill his time after school let 

out, but more than that Camryn wanted a place to 

be safe and express himself. And then he found 

America SCORES Cleveland. 

““My favorite part of America SCORES is the 

poetry because it lets me express my 

feelings and thoughts,” Camryn said. 

Using soccer, poetry and service-learning, America 

SCORES is working to give children like Camryn a 

safe place where they can be inspired to find their 

voice, achieve their goals and reach their full 

potential. 33% (about 118,000) Cleveland-area 

youth are left unsupervised after school and need 

a program like America SCORES to fill those hours 

with inspiration and creativity. 

Camryn’s mother Liz recognizes that America 

SCORES filled that need in her son’s life, and she 

saw a definite change in him after he joined 

America SCORES. “I never thought he was a kid 

who enjoyed writing, but being in the America 

SCORES program has opened up his creative side 

and now he enjoys writing poetry independently,” 

Liz said. America SCORES inspired Camryn to find 

his voice, and today he stays involved with the 

program to help his fellow students find their 

inspiration. Camryn referees games for the 

elementary students, stays in touch with his 

coaches and participates in the SCORES middle 

school program in the spring. 

Foundation, corporate, government, and individual 

donor support enable us to start the cycle of 

inspiration in 8,000 America SCORES youth around 

the country who aspire to achieve their goals like 

Victor, Darlenne and Camryn.

HOW THE NATIONAL OFFICE 

SERVES LOCAL AFFILIATES 

In 1999, the National Office was established to bring the unique 

America SCORES program model to more youth in need. Since 

then, America SCORES has grown from one city to the 14 we serve 

today and has helped over 50,000 youth find their voice, achieve 

their goals, and unleash their full potential. 

The National Office provides a strong cohesive voice in areas 

where the organization makes an impact, including policy and 

funding pertaining to childhood health, reforms in urban 

education, and the overall long-term academic and physical 

health trajectory of young people. Further, the National Office is 

the coordinating hub for program delivery, incubation, and 

outcomes evaluation to capture what’s working and share it 

nationally. An innovative collaboration of national and affiliate 

leadership moves the strategic vision forward, with the national 

office serving as a nerve-center for network-wide 

communications. 

National corporate, foundation, programmatic, and 

advocacy-related partnerships allow affiliates to achieve a 

greater reach, while leading program alignment and innovation 

improves the organization’s ability to meet the changing needs of 

various communities and the thousands of youth in need yet to be 

served. 

With funding from the Fédération Internationale 

de Football Association’s (FIFA) Football for 

Hope initiative, the America SCORES National 

Program Council, with leadership from Boston, 

Cleveland, DC and San Francisco, has 

developed curricula that integrate health and 

nutrition activities into soccer practices and 

service-learning components. The Soccer 

Tactics Supplement with Health and Nutrition 

Appendix and revised Leadership in Action 

curricula are now being used by over 800 

middle school students around the country.

DC SCORES and Volkswagen’s relationship dates back to 2005 -- when the automaker began supporting the organization. In 2009, 

Volkswagen partnered with SCORES through an Adopt-a-School program. As such, Volkswagen sponsors DC SCORES programming 

at its flagship school, Marie Reed Elementary, and has funded the program there every year. An integral part of the team, 

Volkswagen has hosted participants on tours of their corporate headquarters, surprised them with soccer clinics with members of 

DC United, provided relay races at the Jamboree! city-wide soccer festival, and took the gold at last year’s DC SCORES Cup.
