Angel Capital Summit 2012
Introduction
Driving the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Colorado
March 21, 2012
Dear Angel Capital Summit Attendees,
Thank you for participating in Angel Capital Summit 2012. Our theme this year is Driving the Entrepreneurial
Ecosystem in Colorado.
What does this mean to us The Rockies Venture Club and Angel Capital Summit are committed to leading the way
by connecting the various entrepreneurial forces in the ecosystem including universities, meetups, non-profits, small
business development centers, chambers of commerce, economic development offices, angel investors, investment
groups, venture capitalists, investment bankers, and more. We have created a 3-D map of the ecosystem that weʼre
using to identify the gaps and overlaps between all these organizations and look for ways to align in order to further
entrepreneurship and economic development in our state.
The Angel Capital Summit plays its part by thinking hard about the friction points associated with entrepreneurial companies
getting funded. Weʼve created the concept of friction free funding. This concept is realized through the Angel
Capital Summit event through the “Learn-See-Do” model.
Learn: Angel Investor Bootcamp and Entrepreneur Bootcamp provide the fundamentals specific to each groupʼs
needs during investment process.
See: Weʼve selected over forty of Coloradoʼs most promising entrepreneurs and provided pitch coaching to ensure
informative and entertaining pitches, and weʼve provided a venue for investors to see what these businesses have
to offer.
Do: The Rockies Venture Club Investor Forum meets after the Angel Capital Summit in an accredited investors
only environment to review the deals, collaborate on due diligence and negotiation, and to track their investments.
The Investor Forum provides a mechanism to facilitate investors coming together to help support entrepreneurial
companies.
Weʼre really excited about the quality of the companies presenting this year and the role that investors and entrepreneurs
alike can play in creating jobs and energizing Coloradoʼs economy.
We encourage you to fully engage in the process. Vote with your Venture Bucks, phone and checkbook. Have fun,
interact, invest, network and enjoy the fifth Angel Capital Summit.
Angel Capital Summit 2012
Pitch Evaluation Guidelines
The Angel Capital Summit is not technically a competition. The atmosphere is win-win; entrepreneurs and investors
alike enjoy both opportunities and exposure. There may be many winners in this event who ultimately receive funding
for their companies, though this will typically occur months later when due diligence and negotiations are complete.
The guidelines for this event are no different than the guidelines for real-world investment/investor relations.
There are five evaluation moments associated with the Angel Capital Summit:
1) initial application review, 2) audience evaluation of pitches, 3) Venture Bucks investment contest, 4) Angel Investor
due diligence and negotiations, and ultimately 5) Angel Investments.
Nearly 150 companies submitted applications. Company applications were screened using a diligence process exacted
by a pool of over 50 highly experienced reviewers. Each application was scored by a minimum of 6 reviewers.
Executive Reviewers, 9 handpicked professionals, finally determined which companies were ready to pitch in the
Angel Capital Summit. We are showcasing the top 41 companies, most of which are local to the Front Range.
We will pose Audience Response Questions after each pitch.
“How would you evaluate the quality of the pitch” and “How would you evaluate the quality of the business opportunity
presented” The audience will key into their cell phones a response from the following choices: Excellent, Very
Good, Good, Fair, Poor. There are no formal criteria that the audience is required to use other than their immediate
impressions. These results are shared immediately with the audience and presenter for feedback on the pitch.
Every attendee at the event receives 10 Venture Bucks bills to invest in the companies that they find most promising.
Every investor has their own criteria in investment, so there are no rules for how these decisions are to be made.
Companies with the largest Venture Bucks investments are given real prizes.
Investment-ready companies will be discussed at the Investor-Only Forum on Friday. Companies with outstanding
investment opportunities will be examined in a round table session allowing Angel Investors to move ahead with due
diligence and negotiations.
The fifth evaluation moment occurs over a period of time after the event. The ultimate “winners” in the Angel Capital
Summit are those who receive the investments they need to grow. For this evaluation, there are no formal criteria
required by the Angel Capital Summit, but rather investors will evaluate companies on whether they match the investorsʼ
investment profile and on the likelihood of the companiesʼ success.
What Factors Should Investors Consider in the Likelihood of a Companyʼs Success
While no two investors evaluate a deal in exactly the same fashion, there are twelve common factors that many
investors will consider when making their decisions. These are the factors that presenting companies should
focus on and which Venture Bucks “investors” may wish to consider in making their selections. These 12 factors
are listed on the following page in the presentation content section of our evaluation form.
Angel Capital Summit 2012
Venture Bucks
The Venture Bucks Program is a fun way for the audience to vote for their favorite companies, to provide feedback
on the best opportunities, and to add an element of competition among the presenters for valuable prizes.
HOW IT WORKS:
Each attendee at the event receives ten $10,000 Venture Bucks Bills. After viewing the entrepreneur pitches on
Thursday, invest your venture bucks in your favorite companies. Pretend this is real money and you are hoping for
a valuable return on investment. Venture Bucks investments may be made all in one company or singly as desired.
Write the VB Code (VB##) in the box on the Venture Buck Bill and place in the secure ballot box.
Find the VB Code for your favorite companies next to the company descriptions in the program.
The team with the largest collective investment is the winner of the Venture Bucks contest; the award announcements
will be made at the closing cocktail event reception. The companies receiving the greatest Venture Bucks investment
will receive real-life goods and services from our Venture Bucks Sponsors.
VENTURE BUCKS GUIDELINES
• Use your Venture Bucks to invest as you would real money.
• Mark your favorite companiesʼ VB codes (VB##) on the back of the Venture Bucks Bill and post it in the ballot box.
• You may invest all of your Venture Bucks in one company or divide as desired.
• Presenting companies may invest in themselves. (We hope theyʼre doing this in real life too.)
• At the end of the event your Venture Bucks investment will be tallied and the companies with the most
investments will receive valuable prizes from participating sponsors.
Fashion Forward Maternity
Erin brings a unique but powerful background
to her current role as Founder
and President of Fashion Forward Maternity,
a web-based rental site solving
the relatively short term but essential
need that 4.2 million women every year
have for an affordable, comfortable,
high-quality maternity and nursing
wardrobe that changes with a womanʼs
changing body. Erin earned a Masters degree in Industrial Engineering
from Georgia Tech and an Executive MBA from the
University of Michigan, has almost 15 years in Manufacturing,
Supply Chain and Business Development for companies large
and small, was a consultant to the U.S. Air Force, and has the
honor of being the first woman to ever run a diesel-electric locomotive
repair depot for a major Railroad in the US. No matter
the size or scale of the challenge, Erin Lewis is known as
someone you can count on to “get stuff done” with focused
tactical execution and a vision to the future.
