Message from the Chancellor

hroughout our history, USC Aiken has prided itself in celebrating our partnerships. Our partnerships with 

students, staff, faculty, alumni, friends and organizations have been vital to our success. We have never 

forgotten our roots – and that we exist today because of our community’s support. 

What does it mean to be a partner For me, partnerships mean sharing a common vision for making the campus and 

community the very best it can be. Partnerships mean we share a relationship through communication, openness, and 

an appreciation for one another. Our campus is open to you and we consider you an important part of the USC Aiken 

family. We want you on our campus at events, meeting our students and faculty, and enjoying campus life. 

Different institutions measure success in a variety of ways. No matter what barometer is used, there is no doubt that we 

have been successful on several fronts in the last few years. Our campus facilities, including the Convocation Center 

and new student housing, have been excellent additions to the campus. Our reputation as an institution committed 

to “focusing on you” and academic excellence continued to grow and gain momentum. This fact was reflected by our 

external recognition by U.S. News & World Report and by the achievements of our faculty, staff, and students. 

However, it is often the personal, emotional, and intellectual growth and change that occurs along the road to success 

that is more important and longer lasting. Each and every day – with your support – we are making a difference in the 

lives of students. Recently, I was talking with one of our scholarship recipients who recounted her story of being a nontraditional 

student returning to the college setting and how uncertain she was about her abilities and her future. Today, 

she is very successful as an active member of our Honors Program and will graduate soon with a new outlook on life. 

She told me that we didn’t just give her a scholarship, we gave her hope. What a powerful statement! 

In my more than 24 years at USC Aiken, I have come to truly love this institution and you are one of the reasons. Each 

year, I am moved by the generosity of our alumni and friends. The success of our campus would not be possible without your support. I am pleased to extend the 

University’s sincere thanks and gratitude to all. You share in our success and your partnership is certainly a cause for celebration.

Giving Back 

the right thing to do 

A 

fter thirty-one years at USC Aiken, Dr. Tom Mack 

has served in every position in the Department of 

English. He has mentored other faculty members, 

served on a plethora of committees both on campus and in the 

Aiken community, earned dozens of honors and accolades, 

and witnessed over 46 graduation ceremonies. However, the 

best part of his career has been his involvement in giving back 

to the University each year through the Family Fund, and 

hence changing the life of a student. 

When asked why he consistently gives back each year, Dr. Mack 

first thinks of the scholarships his department has created. “Every 

year we get thank you notes from the English and Secondary 

Education English majors who benefit from our generosity. Every 

donation, regardless of size, makes a difference in the lives of 

our students.” He recalls one particular letter he received from a 

Secondary Education English major that read, “You always hear 

people saying, ‘We could always use more teachers.’ However, 

to become a teacher, you must first further your education, and 

to do that requires a very scarce commodity: money. Thanks to 

you and other members of your department for ‘showing me the 

money’!”

part of four scholarships awarded to students majoring in English or English Education. We know the difference that our donations to the Family Fund have made and will 

continue to make in the lives of our students.” 

Along with staff chair and alumna, Sarah Keeling, Dr. Mack served as the faculty chair for the 2007 Family Fund. “It has been a pleasure serving as Family Fund Co-Chair 

this year. I am particularly pleased by the energy and enthusiasm displayed by the faculty and staff who have volunteered to serve as building coordinators. They are doing a 

great job. What is even more remarkable is that all of them say that convincing their colleagues to donate to the Family Fund is not a hard sell; most of the faculty and staff 

already know that giving back to the institution is the right thing to do,” says Dr. Mack. 

He also feels that faculty and staff can have a great influence on our campus by making their gift meaningful and personalized. The Department of English does this by 

creating both endowed and annual scholarships in honor of English faculty retirees and in support of the English honor society and creative writing projects. Through these 

giving efforts Dr. Mack and his peers are able to see direct results in their program and most importantly, their students. Dr. Mack reiterates to faculty and staff, “Whatever 

your targeted beneficiary, thanks for supporting the Family Fund and helping to make USCA a better place to work and learn.”

he Family Fund is the University of South Carolina 

system-wide solicitation of all faculty and staff. The 

funds raised are both restricted and unrestricted and 

support a variety of programs. 

With 84% of our faculty and staff participating in 2007-2008, our 

campus is again on target to have one of the highest participation 

rates among any of the USC campuses with more than $64,000 

raised. USC Aiken’s Family Fund involvement is a powerful message 

to alumni and friends regarding the commitment the University’s 

employees have to the institution.

Campus Highlights 

USC Aiken enrolls over 3,100 students. Our students come from 45 of the 46 counties in South Carolina, 28 states, and 22 foreign countries. Over 20% of 

students reside on campus. Our faculty to student ratio is 16:1 with the average class size of 17. The entering freshman class of 2007 included 617 students. 

Almost half of our freshmen reside on campus. In 2006-2007, USCA awarded 421 bachelor’s degrees and 16 master’s degrees. 

USC Aiken is ranked second among the top public baccalaureate colleges in the South in the year 2008 edition of U.S.News & World Report’s guide, 

“America’s Best Colleges.” This is the 10 th consecutive year USC Aiken has been ranked in the top three public baccalaureate colleges in the South category. 

USC Aiken has been ranked first four times: 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2007. 

Dr. Val Lumans, professor of history and chair of the Department of History, Philosophy, and Political Science, was honored with a Carolina Trustee 

Professorship Award in 2006-2007. Dr. Lumans is the fourth USCA faculty member in the last six years to receive the award for faculty at USC non- 

Columbia campuses. 

Four USCA students were named Magellan Scholars for Spring through Fall terms of 2007. These students and their selected faculty mentors receive 

scholarship funding for research projects in their areas of study.

Why We Gave An 

Anonymous Gift 

Y 

ou are probably wondering why my husband and I, along with several 

other people, chose to leave a deferred gift to USC Aiken under 

the name “Anonymous.” For us, the answer was simple; we are very 

private people. Although we completed our estate plans many years ago, naming 

the University as one of the recipients, we kept the information to ourselves. 

About two years ago, we met a staff member from the University Advancement 

Office. During our conversations we learned that gifts such as ours, payable only 

upon our death, can make a tremendous difference to the University not just in 

the future but at the present time as well. After talking it over, my husband and 

I decided to confide our news with the staff member. Needless to say, the staff 

member was delighted to learn about our gift and quickly pointed out that she 

hoped it took a long time for the University to receive it, and so do we! 

The primary reason we decided to “share” information about our gift is that we 

know the University will honor our request to keep this information private and 

confidential. Additionally, it gave us an opportunity to explore, in person, some 

of the needs of the University and their plans for the future. In this way, we were 

able to determine exactly how our gift will be used after we are gone. While there 

are many options, including unrestricted gifts, we chose to establish an endowed 

scholarship fund. 

We believe in USC Aiken and its commitment to excellence in higher education. 

Additionally, we enjoy knowing that we are leaving a lasting legacy, anonymously, 

for future students and that our gift will impact many lives. 

If you, too, would like to include USC Aiken in your estate plans, or have already 

done so but have not told the University about your intentions, I strongly encourage 

you to contact the USC Aiken Advancement Office and share your news. You 

can then become a member of the Legacy Society under your real name, or 

anonymously as we did. You can rest assured in the knowledge that the University 

will respect your wishes for privacy.

Legacy 

addition to their generous funding of annual academic scholarships, Richard and Barbara Herold have found an ongoing way to support USC Aiken 

students with a planned gift. Through their bequest, the Herolds will leave a significant gift to permanently endow academic scholarships at the University. 

The annual scholarships were originally created in 2000 by Richard and his late wife, Mitzi, in the areas of sciences and nursing. Richard, a scientist, and Mitzi, a nurse, 

chose to fund scholarships in the areas closest to them. These scholarships are awarded to students who will follow in their footsteps by pursuing careers in the areas of 

science and nursing.

The Herolds do much more than donate money to the University. They are actively 

involved in the campus. Richard sings with the University’s Masterworks Chorale and 

they regularly attend University events. Each semester, the Herolds make a personal 

connection when USC Aiken schedules a luncheon with the students who receive their 

scholarships. “It’s an honor to meet our students and speak with them about their future 

goals,” said Barbara. “They are a fine group of future leaders.” 

The Herolds are passionate about doing their part to fund educational opportunities for 

students. They feel it is their honor and duty to give back. “As a community, we need 

to support our youth to help them meet their educational goals,” said Barbara. Last 

year, the Herolds’ gift funded scholarships for nine students. Lauren Cook, a senior 

nursing major is a recipient of a scholarship funded by the Herolds. According to Cook, 

“The generosity that Dr. and Mrs. Herold have shown me has been tremendous. The 

scholarship I received has helped me to pursue my dream of helping people around 

the world by becoming a registered nurse. The Herolds greatly lightened the financial 

burden that years of college create, and they have also interacted with me and shown 

interest in my education, career, and life goals.” 

According to Barbara, “There’s no better gift than providing someone with the gift of 

education, and we are proud to participate in this endeavor.” Richard concurred stating, 

“It’s a good feeling to know that we are helping young people obtain their goals in higher 

education.”

The Herolds are optimistic that their gifts will be just the beginning of a cycle of giving 

back. Richard said, “Our hope is that when these students are successful, they will give 

back to their community in a similar way.”

elping others is a way of life for Marcia Nash. After earning a sociology degree from USC Aiken in 1993, she works in the early childhood development 

and education field as the Executive Director 

of the Aiken County First Steps program. 

The Aiken County First Steps program supports prekindergarten 

programs, literacy training, and programs 

to involve parents so that children will arrive in first grade 

healthy and ready for school. One of the new programs 

that Marcia has been involved with is the First Steps for 

Fatherhood Initiative to help fathers become more involved 

parents. 

Marcia understands the important role an involved father plays 

in the life of his children because she and her four siblings were 

raised by their single father in Orangeburg, S.C. Her favorite 

childhood activities were running and playing basketball 

with her older brothers. That basketball practice paid off 

when Marcia graduated from high school and was offered a 

basketball scholarship to attend USC Aiken. 

Although her scholarship is what brought her to USC 

Aiken, the campus community at USC Aiken is what forged 

her continuing involvement with the college. She fondly 

remembers the support of the fans and athletics staff during the 

four years she played for the Lady Pacers. When asked what she 

loves best about USCA, Marcia replied: “USCA reminds me of 

the community where I grew up. At USCA, everyone takes care 

of each other.” 

Marcia’s appreciation for the support and generosity of those 

who helped her succeed at USC Aiken prompts her to give back to 

the University. She sees her participation in the Alumni 

Annual Fund and the Alumni Council as an opportunity to “pay it forward” by using her knowledge and skills to help someone else.

Importance of Unrestricted Giving

hen alumni and friends give unrestricted funds to USC Aiken, they are providing what are, in many ways, the most valuable gifts that we receive. 

Unrestricted giving assures USC Aiken of an unparalleled flexibility in meeting new needs and seizing opportunities as they arise. USC Aiken’s need 

for unrestricted funds is particularly acute during times of economic uncertainty and institutional transition. These gifts are exactly what their name 

implies, funds given to USC Aiken without restrictions on how the money will be used. Unrestricted funds are especially valuable because they allow the University 

to address immediate priorities and enhance programs not covered by the endowment or other sources of income. 

While it is true that unrestricted annual giving is made up primarily of smaller gifts, some donors do give very large amounts of money without conditions. 

Moreover, the impact of smaller gifts should not be underestimated. For example, a gift of $25 could buy a flask for a chemistry lab; $40 acquires an easel for the art 

department or a basketball for student-athletes; $250 benefits the library with a subscription to a quarterly journal.

SCA’s alumni giving rate has grown consistently over the past few years. With a low point of 1.3% in 

the 2002-2003 year to 7.6% last year, our alumni are demonstrating growing support of their alma 

mater.

his year, the Aiken Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) 

celebrates its 55 th year. From the beginning, this active and dynamic group of women 

has reached out to the community in many ways. In fact, in the late 50s and early 60s, 

the early leaders of AAUW played a critical role in the creation of USC Aiken. Partnering with the 

local legislative delegation through the efforts of Senator Ed Cushman, the group worked tirelessly 

to show the strong interest and need for higher education in this area.

“The original premise of AAUW is to promote education for women and we have always taken this 

charge seriously,” said President Bea Peyser. “We share a special relationship with the USC Aiken campus 

and feel a great sense of pride for our part in bringing higher education opportunities to Aiken County.” 

Their relationship with USC Aiken did not end with the creation of the campus in 1961. Over the years, 

AAUW members have been supporters of the University including their work to begin the first library 

for the campus and their creation of an annual scholarship. 

The annual full-tuition scholarship is funded through one of the most successful events held by the 

Aiken Branch of AAUW. The Books N’ Things Fair makes used books and attic treasures available to 

the community over a two-day period. The Fair will be held for the 46 th consecutive year in 2008 and 

has grown to be highly successful with enthusiastic support from the local community. “We have been 

very fortunate to receive terrific support from the community for our book fair,” said Peyser. From the 

proceeds, the group provides financial support through the AAUW Educational Foundation along with 

USC Aiken scholarship and many other worthy community projects. 

“Even though we have been giving a scholarship for many years, there continues to be a sense of 

excitement,” said Peyser. “Having the opportunity to meet the young women receiving the scholarship 

and knowing we have made a difference in their lives is quite rewarding.”

Recently, the organization took their commitment a step further by creating a permanently endowed 

scholarship fund with the Aiken Partnership. This endowed scholarship will benefit an Aiken County female student who transfers to USC Aiken from Aiken Technical 

College. The scholarship is designed to reach out to students who may be “non-traditional” in their efforts to pursue their education.

“Our members felt a strong desire to reach out to women coming into higher education through less traditional means,” said Peyser. “Having both the annual full-tuition 

scholarship for a traditional undergraduate student and the newly created endowed scholarship for a non-traditional student allows us to expand our commitment to 

providing educational opportunities for women. We are proud to partner with USC Aiken in both of these ways.”

or SRP Federal Credit Union, education has always been front and center. From 

the elementary level all the way up the ranks to higher education, the notfor-profit 

financial cooperative is active in the Aiken community and beyond. 

Whether it’s donating Child Identification Kits to public school children, educating kids 

about the importance of saving money, or providing funding for college scholarships, SRP 

does it all. 

According to Ed Templeton, the organization’s president, these decisions to support so many 

local educational programs are vital components to the SRP philosophy. “Education really 

is the key to everything that we believe in,” he said, “and it’s our way of giving back to the 

community that we are so proud of and so active in.”

SRP has long been a supporter of USC Aiken programs and initiatives, including the annual 

Science Education Enrichment Day (SEED) and the USCA Baseball team’s rodeo fundraiser. 

Recently, the organization made a contribution to the new USC Aiken Convocation Center, 

providing funding for an Athlete Study Area in the facility. The Study Room contains 

several carrels with computers, providing student athletes a quiet place to study or work on 

assignments in between classes, practices, or games. 

“We believe in education,” Templeton said. “We believe in the Convocation Center. We believe in 

people.” The common tie among all three of those things, he said, is the Study Center. Templeton 

explained that because the Convocation Center is the place where so many student athletes spend 

the bulk of their time, the concept of the study room just made sense to the folks at SRP.

“If I’m going to excel educationally, put me in a situation that encourages me to excel. Put me in a situation where I’m comfortable learning. [The Convocation Center] is 

their home,” Templeton said of the student athletes. “They’re in a place where they’re comfortable, and they’re not intimidated. They can live, work, play, and learn all in one 

facility.”

USC Aiken Chancellor Tom Hallman said he shares Templeton’s view. “Student athletes at our University must balance the demands of their sport with the challenges of the 

classroom,” he said. “The SRP Federal Credit Union Athlete Study Area has made a tremendous difference in our ability to provide student athletes with the support they 

need to excel in the classroom as well as on the playing court or field.” Templeton said he views the Aiken community as the “heart and soul of SRP Federal Credit Union.” 

He said that supporting the University, along with other educational programs in the area, will “hopefully make [Aiken] an even better community for everyone.” 

He also had some advice to offer other businesses who are interested in giving back the local community. “If you’re looking to get involved,” Templeton said, “don’t feel like 

you’ve got to make the biggest splash in the world. Just make a ripple, but make multiple ripples on multiple occasions. That’s what it’s all about—not doing something big 

one time and walking away, but rather doing little things over and over.”

The Ruth Patrick Science Education Center is a cooperative 

effort between USC Aiken, businesses, and schools in the 

Central Savannah River Area. The purpose of the Center 

is to infuse a love for learning science, mathematics, and 

technology with a hands-on approach to teaching. Since its 

opening in 1986, over 850,000 people have taken part in 

RPSEC programs.

The USCA Convocation Center is the University’s newest facility. It 

is the largest gathering place for Aiken County, accommodating the 

University’s graduation ceremonies and other major events as well as 

community concerts, family shows, and performances. It is also the 

home of Pacer Athletics and provides state-of-the-art game, practice, 

and training facilities to Pacer student-athletes. 

SeniorNet and the Academy for Lifelong Learning meet on the USC 

Aiken campus. The Academy offers monthly programs, short courses, 

special events, and trips for mature adults who seek fellowship and 

entertainment within an academic environment. SeniorNet is a 

computer training program open to individuals of at least 50 years 

of age. SeniorNet classes are taught by fellow members to encourage 

a comfortable environment, regardless of skills.
