A YEAR OF RENEWAL AND RECOGNITION
“Mount Sinai is one of the top teaching hospitals in North America,
one of the most respected research institutions in the world … at the
high end of the medical ladder, a hospital such as Mount Sinai is
without peer.” Ian Brown, The Globe and Mail
In 2005-06 Mount Sinai Hospital, our
Foundation and our Samuel Lunenfeld
Research Institute (SLRI), moved forward
together on a number of significant fronts
designed to strengthen, renew, and build
on our already strong base of patient care,
education and research. At the same time,
we continued to receive support from our
generous donor community, while our
team received international acclaim for
a wide range of clinical and scientific
achievements. And, in November and
December 2005, a series of dramatic, indepth
national feature stories in The Globe
and Mail provided an impartial assessment
based on eight weeks of unlimited access
to the hospital and our multi-disciplinary
teams. The Globe recognized Mount Sinai as
a world-class academic and research centre
that excels in delivering the highest levels of
compassionate patient care.
During 2005-06, Mount Sinai underwent
a formal accreditation process by the
Canadian Council on Health Services
Accreditation, an exhaustive review and
audit of practices that all hospitals must
undertake every three years. Final results,
which were received in April 2006, awarded
high ratings to our clinical and administrative
services and our world-class family
of care providers as we adopt and pioneer
best practices. One surveyor began her
feedback with “What an awesome hospital
you are!”
We are, of course, pleased that our
strength and substance are so well recognized.
Nevertheless, meeting the challenges
of providing 21st-Century healthcare in a
rapidly changing system requires us to
continually evaluate, understand and adapt
our organization, building on the best that
we already have. We cannot afford — nor
do we intend — to rest on our laurels. This
2005–06 ANNUAL REPORT
“IT WAS AMAZING TO ME — IN SUCH A BUSY
HOSPITAL — THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO
WANTED TO HELP, THE CARE THEY GAVE AND
HOW THEY MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS THE
CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSE.” Donald Townshend, patient
commitment to improvement and renewal
was never truer than during the productive
12 months of 2005-06.
Mount Sinai shares with other outstanding
organizations a solid underpinning
of strong fiscal and operational management.
We have concentrated on systemic and
practice upgrades throughout the human
resources portfolio. With several new key
appointments, we are renewing and revitalizing
our organization at the corporate,
clinical and research level, ensuring that
we’re well positioned for further growth and
success with the best people in place.
In 2005-06, we again achieved a balanced
budget, and moved ahead on numerous
corporate initiatives to continually
evaluate our efforts against benchmarks
and standards. The Balanced Scorecard, for
example, is a key organization-wide strategic
tool that provides us with improved
metrics for setting and reviewing performance
objectives, and helps measure
progress in critical areas such as patient
care and safety. We have enhanced our
collaborations, which range from shared
technology, training, cross-appointments
and purchasing services with other teaching
hospitals to a range of community partnerships.
Our strong volunteer governance
includes outstanding, involved and progressive
Boards and dynamic committees,
whose members are as committed as our
dedicated staff to the hospital’s mission.
We recently completed a comprehensive
Strategic Plan, Building on the Best, which
sets out a vision and guide through to 2010.
It responds to environmental shifts and our
support for the Ontario government’s goal
to foster an integrated healthcare system.
The new Local Health Integration Networks
(LHINs) will influence how healthcare is
delivered in Ontario, and are already generating
even more collaboration and community
outreach.
Building on the Best is based on three
key strategies — strengthening our focus on
patient and family-centred care, advancing
our role as an academic health centre, and
broadening our community health collaborations.
The plan signals our commitment
to continue investing in our people, space
and technology; bridging research and
evidence-based clinical practice; responding
to our changing environment; and striving
for excellence.
Research and its link to patient care are
vitally important to us: as a research-based
hospital, our clinicians, scientists and
patients participate in both the delivery of
excellent healthcare and the leading-edge
research that is its catalyst. Strengthening
the link between research and care is
critical to our success.
With researchers and clinicians working
together, we have a unique opportunity to
better understand, combat and treat human
disease. Together, Mount Sinai and the SLRI
2 A COMMUNITY OF CARING
combined to receive research investments
totalling more than $90 million last year —
a true testament to our commitment to
turn research into first-rate care and
improve the quality of life of our patients.
Patient care at Mount Sinai was further
endorsed when we received approval by the
Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for
a Family Health Team — one of only 150 in
Ontario — whose integrated programs will
be housed in the new Granovsky-Gluskin
Family Medicine Centre.
Capital renewal is a major priority as
we face the challenge of an aging 33-year
old building and a pressing need to upgrade
clinical and information technology.
First-rate care requires us to attract
and retain top healthcare professionals and
provide them with the best tools to treat
disease: state-of-the-art medical equipment
and ongoing upgrades to facilities and
technology. This year, for example, our
Kimel Family Centre for Advanced Medical
Imaging installed two robotic, digital radiography
rooms for X-rays, an innovation
that has more than doubled our capacity
to provide better medical images. Similarly,
our two new 64-slice Computerized
Tomography (CT) scanners, among the
first in Canada, provide faster, more
detailed images, resulting in better patient
care and reduced wait times.
From facility upgrades to improved
diagnostic testing and advances in family
medicine, genetics and gastrointestinal
medicine, Mount Sinai is working with
government and philanthropic partners to
invest so that our clinicians can provide the
best medicine to every person who comes
through our doors. That is our mission,
and our passion.
Fulfilling this mission and meeting these
challenges is only possible with enduring
philanthropic support. Given the extremely
challenging environment for fundraising, we
are grateful to our existing donor community
that, in 2005-06, brought The Best Medicine
campaign to $293 million toward our goal of
$400 million. In the fundraising world, however,
the competition for charitable dollars
continues to grow unabated. Our Foundation
is responding by expanding its base of
support in the larger community and
building even greater accountability and
efficiency into our systems.
In the pages that follow are just some
of the highlights of another remarkable
year in the lives of Mount Sinai Hospital,
our Foundation, and our Samuel Lunenfeld
Research Institute. We hope they provide
a glimpse — albeit an important, and
dramatic one — of our extraordinary team.
We are deeply grateful to all the people
whose talent, commitment and energy
make Mount Sinai a world-class academic
and research health centre dedicated to
patient care, learning and innovation, diversity
and respect, community collaboration,
and renewal.
A COMMUNITY OF CARING
“There are endless human dramas, unfolding everywhere you turn
…the hospital is a bank of stories, a perpetual drama machine,
and a collection of narratives and experiments in character.”
– Ian Brown, The Globe and Mail
If a picture is worth a thousand
words, then these photographs offer
countless examples of how Mount
Sinai is a place of great patient care
and skill, compassion and sensitivity,
diversity and respect…and hope.
4 A COMMUNITY OF CARING
Mount Sinai’s Women’s and Infants’ Health Program is one of the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in
Canada. Some of the babies born here, like day-old Krishna Vivek Bhattiprolu, need extra care when their delicate
organs are not fully developed. Thanks to the skill of the Valentine Neonatal Intensive Care Unit team, babies born
as early as 23 weeks and as small as the palm of a hand have a fighting chance to have a healthy start in life.
Wayne Lee, Infection Control
Practitioner, discusses lab results
with colleague Judith Cunningham.
Examining bacterial cultures is a
critical tool in controlling the spread
of disease. Infection Control is one of
our centres of excellence and our
experts are internationally prominent.
Our Rapid Response Laboratory’s new
integrated lab testing system performs
thousands of tests each day, improving
efficiency in obtaining results for
patients.
Great research leads to great care. Dr. Derek Ceccarelli, a post-doctoral fellow in Dr. Frank Sicheri’s laboratory at
our Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute, prepares to X-ray a frozen protein crystal, from which a three-dimensional
model can be made. Understanding the exact structure of proteins can help unlock therapies for the most complex
and debilitating diseases. Our researchers work together today to improve quality of life for our patients tomorrow.
Patient Wolf Szydlow’s room gets
a shine thanks to the care of Service
Assistant Frank Oppedisano. Our
patients have interesting stories.
37 years ago Mr. Szydlow founded
the Canadian foundation to support
Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Hospital.
Mount Sinai’s large and diverse staff
work tirelessly to maintain and improve
the hospital environment.
Dr. Howard Ovens, Director of Mount
Sinai’s Schwartz-Reisman Emergency
Centre, consults with patient Ilga
Hughes. Located in the heart of
Canada’s largest city, Mount Sinai’s
busy Emergency Department helps
patients who often present with more
than one medical condition, which
contributes to the complexity of care.
6 A COMMUNITY OF CARING
Last year, more than 25,000
patients filled our beds —
coming to us from the Emergency
Department as well as a variety
of clinics and surgical suites.
Our teams of caregivers work
together with many skills, from
social workers, and respiratory
therapists to nurses like Andrea
Massie, checking patient Margaret
Hutchinson’s breathing in the
General Internal Medicine
department. General Medicine
staff possess a variety of skills to
treat a broad range of complex
illnesses.
Approximately 1,000 babies were
admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care
this year. With 34 Level III and 20 Level
II isolettes for neonates, Mount Sinai’s
capacity to care for the most fragile of
patients is unmatched.
Obstetrics/Gynaecology students
practice their laparoscopy techniques
using the training models in the
University of Toronto Surgical Skills
Centre at Mount Sinai. This leadingedge
teaching centre provides a
laboratory setting for teaching both
basic and complex surgical techniques
and innovation.
“I THANK THE HOSPITAL FOR THE EXTRAORDINARY CARE MY FATHER RECEIVED. I HAVE
NOTHING BUT SUPERLATIVES TO DESCRIBE HIS STAY, BEGINNING FROM THE EMERGENCY
ROOM TO HIS DISCHARGE. EVERYTHING WAS DONE WITH A SMILE AND NOTHING WAS
EVER A PROBLEM. HE WAS TREATED WITH RESPECT BY ALL THE HOSPITAL STAFF ...
THE SUPERB NURSES ... AND THE WARMEST, MOST COMPASSIONATE AND THOROUGH
DOCTORS THAT I HAVE EVER MET.” Esther Rothenstein, daughter of patient
A healthy start to life means more
than managing the medical needs
of newborns, it means providing
the best environment for babies to
enter the world. Here, baby Natalie
Peres-Dos Santos grasps the finger
of her mom, Cecilia, while a nurse
checks her temperature.
Respiratory Therapists like Sven
Reitav, checking on a tiny newborn
patient, are an essential part of the
clinical team. Respiratory Therapists
work throughout the hospital, including
intensive care units, anesthesia
support, diagnostic testing, patient
transport, and patient education such
as asthma management.
Physiotherapy Assistant Kevin Hilditch
leads a physio session in the pool at
Mount Sinai. Performing rehab exercises
in water is helpful to patients because
it minimizes stress and impact on the
body, while helping to get muscles back
in shape.
8 A COMMUNITY OF CARING
The best technology can make a difference in providing the most accurate diagnosis and treatment. Mount Sinai
received two of the most advanced medical imaging systems this year: 64-slice Computerized Tomography (CT)
scanners. CT technologists like Kathy Lott can now produce scans of the head in under 30 seconds — a process that,
in the 1980s, took 15 minutes. Reduced wait times for patients and quicker diagnosis add up to better patient care.
Third-year Medical students Elinor
Lu-Olaco and Sayed Ali practice
making casts at the University of
Toronto Surgical Skills Centre at Mount
Sinai. Some 4,000 medical students,
residents, and surgeons from across
North America come to the Centre to
learn each year.
Making the right diagnosis quickly is
crucial. Doctors in Medical Imaging can
now view images taken moments before
on-screen anywhere in the hospital. It’s
an example of the way our teams work
together to provide the very best care,
efficiently and accurately.
Medical professionals and mentors all start somewhere. Mount Sinai has a strong tradition of, and commitment
to, being a teaching centre for the University of Toronto. As Chief Medical Resident Dr. James Downar (far left) leads
a team of residents on rounds, the next generation of doctors is gaining hands-on training.
In 2005, our volunteers, including
Xiu Chang Zhao, launched Care Mail, a
way to deliver words of encouragement
through our Web site — even from
halfway around the world. For patients
like Bradley Macdonald, our volunteers
bring a smile to each day.
Orthopaedic Surgery resident
Dr. Mohamed Al Saied, left, discusses
a case with Dr. Brian Goldman. Mount
Sinai is one of Toronto’s top teaching
hospitals, training more than 50 per cent
of the University of Toronto’s medical
students. Programs are regularly
broadcast to medical centres from Sinai
operating rooms, attracting students
and surgeons worldwide.
10 A COMMUNITY OF CARING
A visit to the hospital can be an emotional rollercoaster for patients and their loved ones. Here, Dr. Brian Goldman
checks patient Evelyn Capobianco as her husband, Foster, stands by. She is one of the 40,000 patients who came to
the Schwartz-Reisman Emergency Centre this year. Evelyn, a diabetic, has gangrene in several of her toes, and is getting
the news of her treatment from Dr. Goldman. When medical emergencies happen, our strong professional team is
equipped to treat myriad injuries and illness afflicting everyone from infants to seniors.
Julia Tran, RN, cares for patient Arthur
Turrill in the 17 South General Medicine
Step-down Unit. Mount Sinai has a
multi-disciplinary team of more than
1,200 nurses who look after a wide
range of patients with an equally
diverse set of illnesses.
Pathology and Laboratory Medicine,
headed by Dr. Kenneth Pritzker, is a vital
resource in diagnosis and learning, and
it’s one of the busiest in the country.
Laboratory staff and researchers help
our clinical teams deliver better care to
patients, and help advance medical
understanding for the future.
MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL: COMPASSION, DETERMINATION
AND EXCELLENCE AROUND THE CLOCK
A hospital never sleeps. At any given hour of the day or night, a nurse
monitors a sick infant, a doctor consults with a team of caregivers, a
researcher works long hours in her lab. And always, everywhere,
patients and their families await.
There’s no stopping the clock in the life of
a hospital: it is a constant ebb and flow that
cannot be put on hold.
At Mount Sinai last year we treated more
than 25,000 in-patients, almost 7,000 babies
came into the world — 775 of them preemies,
some weighing about as much as a stick of
butter — and there were 648,300 visits to our
ambulatory care services. A team of more
than 5,000 nurses, physicians, clinicians,
technicians, administrators and support
personnel came to work, more than 1,000
members of the Auxiliary and 875 volunteers
helped out. But the numbers provide only
an outline of this team’s story. It’s the people
who give it character, plot and drama.
Mount Sinai is peopled by some of the
most highly skilled, dedicated professionals
working in healthcare anywhere in the
world today. They move through their days
with a sense of mission that is palpable.
What keeps them going day after day at
such an intense pace is a profound commitment
to the work they do — whether it
involves finding a new way to treat previously
intractable diseases or finding new
space to house critical diagnostic equipment
— and a belief that Mount Sinai
Hospital is the very best place to be doing it.
Providing the best patient care is at the
core of our mission to be a world-class academic
and research centre, and our clinical,
research and administrative team members
take that to heart. Whether they work in an
office, at the bedside, or in the laboratory,
our people make supporting Mount Sinai’s
delivery of patient care their priority.
Every day.
Nursing Makes the Difference
Senior Vice President of Nursing Leslie
Vincent has been at Mount Sinai for 16
12 A COMMUNITY OF CARING
years and is responsible for the care being
provided by a team of 1,200 nurses and
other staff who work in patient-care areas.
Driven by a strong desire to contribute to
the health and well-being of patients, she
helps create an environment in which people
can provide the best patient care possible.
Education is a critical area with respect
to excellence in nursing practice. With a
severe nursing shortage on the horizon, we
are now hiring more graduate nurses — 85
last year alone, the vast majority of them in
full-time positions — and are directing
significant resources toward developing
greater depth and clinical expertise. This is
a complex and ongoing process, as nurses
today are highly specialized in such areas as
emergency medicine, intensive care, critical
care, labour and delivery, neonatal care,
community nursing, public health, and
management of chronic conditions such as
diabetes or heart disease. With the explosion
of knowledge and the levels of required
clinical expertise, we must have nurses who
are expert and educated to work in specific
clinical areas.
Mount Sinai excels at nursing education
and has a worldwide reputation for valuing
and respecting nursing practice, and providing
novice nurses with extended orientation
and development experiences. All of
this translates into an extraordinarily high
level of skilled, compassionate care delivered
at the bedside, in our ambulatory clinics
and wherever patients come into contact
with our superb nurses.
High Tech/High Touch
In Mount Sinai’s famous Valentine Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU) — an active part
of our renowned Women’s and Infants’ Health
Program, one of our centres of excellence —
Nursing Unit Administrator Rheney Castillo
has one word when asked to describe it.
Interestingly, it’s the same word Director
of Nurseries Dr. Kin Fan Young Tai uses
when separately asked the same question:
“Phenomenal!”
Our Lawrence and Frances Bloomberg
Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
is among the most advanced in the world.
According to Dr. Alan Bocking, Obstetrician
and Gynaecologist-in-Chief, “with the volume
and complexity of patients, as well as
the breadth and depth of cases, the reality is
that we are the largest and most comprehensive
centre in Canada.”
Just one example is our Fetal Therapy
Program, the largest in the country and one
of the largest in the world. What makes
Mount Sinai unique is how well we provide
a continuum of care that begins with
research. For example, Dr. Stephen Lye
is renowned for his work investigating
pre-term labour. Dr. John Kingdom, a world
expert on the placenta, does clinical and
basic research. All our scientists are dedicated
to promoting healthier outcomes for
mothers and babies.
The continuum of care goes from the
high-risk pregnancy unit, where some of
the most original obstetrical work in the
world is done, to the doctors on the obstetrical
team who deliver the babies, to the
subsequent care infants and mothers
receive after delivery, and care before and
after pregnancy in the program’s worldclass
ambulatory clinics. All of this care is
not just about the ability to do high-tech
fetal interventions such as Dr. Greg Ryan’s
remarkable twin-to-twin transfusions and
chest shunts; or about having state-of-the
art equipment. It’s about overall quality of
life. “Our team is at the leading edge in
terms of understanding and addressing
some of the developmental needs preemies
have, and providing the appropriate environment
and stimulation,” says Dr. Young Tai.
Approximately 1,000 babies are admitted
to the NICU each year, and, while other
hospitals offer this kind of care, Mount
Sinai’s capacity to help these vulnerable
2005-2006
Dr. Tom Stewart is named Critical Care
Lead for the Toronto Central LHIN and
chair of the group of Critical Care LHIN
Leads. Dr. Stewart is also a senior
advisor to the Ontario Ministry of
Health and Long-Term Care on Critical
Care transformation.
Dr. Graeme Taylor is awarded the
prestigious Mary S. Sigourney Trust,
presented to people who have published
or contributed in a significant
way to clinical psychoanalysis or
psychoanalytical research. Since the
award was established 16 years ago,
Dr. Taylor is just the fourth Canadian
to be honoured.
Dr. Donald Low, Microbiologist-in-Chief
and infectious disease expert, takes
on an additional role as Medical Director
of the Ontario Ministry of Health and
Long-Term Care’s Public Health Laboratories
“Mount Sinai Hospital, one
of the country’s leading
academic health centres,
provides outstanding
teaching to more than
4,000 students annually,
instilling values and skills
in the next generation of
clinicians and practitioners
serving communities
across Canada.”
in awe of the work the team does every
day,” says Castillo.
Surgical Precision
Chief of Surgery Zane Cohen, who’s been
at Mount Sinai for 15 years, speaks of
operating on patients as a privilege. “It’s a
fantastic thing,” he says, “to be a surgeon.”
More than 18,000 procedures are performed
annually, from general surgery to the most
complex work in cancer and orthopaedics.
Surgery is another of our centres of
excellence, and our surgeons enjoy a
distinguished international reputation.
Dr. Cohen is particularly proud of the exceptionally
high calibre of his surgical team.
“They are internationally renowned, as is
the entire department. Its reputation — the
papers published, the grants received, and
the ground-breaking work that’s being done
here — makes our Department of Surgery a
strong ambassador for Mount Sinai everywhere
in the world,” says Dr. Cohen.
Our approach to teaching — and to
teaching surgeons — has also gained worldwide
attention. The University of Toronto
Surgical Skills Centre at Mount Sinai, which
will soon double in size, is the first of its
kind in North America. It provides a
laboratory setting, equipped with high-tech
instruments and audio-visual support, in
which students learn basic and complex
surgical procedures through repeated
hands-on practice combined with professional
feedback. This innovative educational
model is now being widely replicated in
other North American teaching centres.
Managing Resources
The quality of teaching is important to
Jeannine Banack, who coordinates Medical
Education, and recently received the prestigious
Aikins Award from the University of
Toronto for her work in education. Senior
Vice President, Medical, Allied and Environmental
Services, and a 32-year employee of
Mount Sinai, she’s always thinking about
people: those who learn how to treat
patients, those who come to the hospital as
patients, as well as those with whom she
works. In addition to Medical Education,
her broad portfolio covers Facilities and
Allied Services, which includes areas like
Medical Imaging, Social Work, Pharmacy,
Respiratory Therapy, Rehabilitation
Medicine, and Pathology and Laboratory
Medicine. This allied group is involved fully
with patient care: from analyzing original
lab results, to providing the right medicines,
preparing a rehabilitation program to social
workers helping plan after-care strategies
with patients and their families.
Banack also oversees the hospital’s
facilities (1 million square feet and growing)
and manages the allocation of new and
existing space — everything from ongoing
construction, capital and architectural
planning, to working with our spiritual
advisory committee about a soon-to-becompleted
Multi-faith Room, a spiritual
oasis for our diverse community of patients
and their families as well as our staff.
Dr. Allan Detsky, Physician-in-Chief,
is honoured with the Award for Career
Achievement by the Philadelphia-based
Society for Medical Decision Making for
his 25 years of work. Dr. Detsky is also
a professor of Health Policy, Management
and Evaluation at the University
of Toronto.
Dr. Arnold Noyek is awarded the
Canadian Society for International
Health’s Lifetime Achievement Award
for his work on continuing education
and community health outreach
programs in the Middle East.
Dr. Gerald Baker, head of Mount Sinai’s
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program,
is honoured through the creation of the
Gerald I. Baker Scholarship in Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery, established by the
University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry
through donations made by Mount Sinai
maxillofacial surgeons Dr. Cameron
Clokie and Dr. George Sandor.
Dr. Jeffrey Hurwitz, and the Department
of Ophthalmology he heads, team with
the departments of Anesthesia and
Respiratory Therapy to help staff the
Kensington Eye Institute, reducing wait
times for cataract patients and providing
medical training opportunities.
— and discover — the best treatments and
therapies for our patients. In Acute and
Chronic-Care medicine, another of our
four centres of excellence, people like
Dr. Ed Keystone, whose specialty is rheumatoid
arthritis, and Dr. Bernard Zinman, a
diabetes expert, are outstanding examples
of what can happen when research, knowledge
and an insatiable drive to do better for
patients come together in the right setting.
Senior Consultant in Rheumatology
and Director of Mount Sinai’s Rebecca
MacDonald Centre for Arthritis and
Autoimmune Disease, Dr. Keystone is a
self-proclaimed “therapeutics guy” —
always looking for strategies that will
improve health outcomes. Now, through
clinical research involving biotechnology
and rheumatoid arthritis in its early stages,
he believes he’s found it, with a unique
program of early treatment combined with
genetics, clinical studies, and the latest
imaging technology.
“Not only is this the most exciting
time ever in the history of the treatment of
arthritis,” Dr. Keystone, who has the
country’s largest practice of patients with
rheumatoid arthritis, says “at Mount Sinai
we have the greatest potential to make an
impact.”
In another of Mount Sinai’s chroniccare
specialties, Dr. Bernard Zinman,
Director of the Leadership Sinai Centre for
Diabetes and Senior Scientist at the Samuel
Lunenfeld Research Institute, holds the Sam
and Judy Pencer Family Chair in Diabetes.
He was recently awarded the prestigious
Outstanding Physician/Clinician in
Diabetes Award by the American Diabetes
Association. With his colleagues and collaborators,
he has developed an internationally
recognized research program evaluating
new strategies to prevent the long-term
complications of diabetes as well as testing
new treatment methods for both Type 1 and
Type 2 diabetes.
At Mount Sinai’s Leadership Sinai
Centre for Diabetes, Dr. Zinman sees
patients, sets up clinical trials, develops
grant proposals, supervises students and
researchers, recruits for trials, and writes up
studies. Challenged by too much to do in
too little time, he says that what keeps him
going is the translational aspect of the
research: how his team’s work directly
impacts patients.
“It’s so important to have research and
clinical treatment side-by-side, as it is here
at Mount Sinai,” Dr. Zinman says. “It helps
us to attract high-quality clinicians and
scientists, encourages excellence, and lets
us rapidly translate recent advances in
research into clinical care.”
Perseverance Pays Off
In the real world, research rarely unfolds
as it does in films. There are moments of
discovery, to be sure, but research primarily
involves long hours of hard work, analysis,
experimentation, theoretical testing,
looking for clues and building on the work
of colleagues.
At the Samuel Lunenfeld Research
Institute (SLRI), investigators are expanding
the frontiers of science, exploring new ways
of thinking and new ways of doing things in
THE MOUNT SINAI
HOSPITAL AUXILIARY:
A PROUD HISTORY
Rose Torno
The women who comprise the
Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary
have much to celebrate. With
more than 1,200 members, North
America’s largest hospital auxiliary
has a well-deserved reputation
for creativity, enthusiasm,
dedication, sisterhood — and
very successful philanthropy. That
philanthropy is focused on providing
high-risk newborns a better
start in life — a cause connected
to the creation of the group 52
years ago by Rose Torno.
The Auxiliary raises funds
through initiatives like baby
photographs, plaques, and
events including the Wine Down
Easy Auction and the annual
Gala. The Gala is comprised of
an exciting performance — in
2005 by comedian Jerry Seinfeld
and most recently by multiple
Juno award winner Michael
Bublé — and an online Dream
Auction, raffle, and Perspectives
magazine…all of which bring
in funds that go toward the
Auxiliary’s ambitious $3.5-million
pledge called “Healthy Babies” in
support of the Women’s and
Infants’ Health Program.
Launched in 2005, the
campaign supports the purchase
of isolettes for the Valentine
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit,
Fetal Monitoring System, and
Fetal Health Research at the
Samuel Lunenfeld Research
Institute. These funds will have
an impact on providing highquality
care to the hospital’s
youngest, most vulnerable
patients.
Today, the Auxiliary continues
stronger than ever and
proudly emulates the values that
began with Rose Torno’s vision of
a sisterhood that would support
excellence in healthcare at
order to improve the lives of our patients.
Our scientists are pioneers in cell signalling,
stem-cell research, systems biology,
molecular genetics and genomic medicine.
Pushing the limit of what will be possible
tomorrow is what some of the world’s very
best researchers are doing today — and
they’re doing it right here at the SLRI. And
while Dr. Jim Woodgett, our new Director of
the Institute, brims with enthusiasm for the
SLRI and our ground-breaking work, he
points out that the discoveries made hundreds
of years ago are the ones saving lives
today. “In research,” he says, “all change is
incremental. Although a scientific breakthrough
may not result in immediate
change… research means hope.”
than their renowned high-level skills and
great minds; they also share their big hearts.
This annual report can only focus on a
few individuals, but they represent the people
who embody patient and family-centred
care and who make up our hospital.
At Mount Sinai, it always comes back to
one thing: patient care. This commitment
and passion combined with knowledge
make Mount Sinai one of Canada’s foremost
patient care, research and academic health
centres.
Commitment, Passion, Knowledge …
Every day, our multi-disciplinary professional
BUILDING SUPPORT
“Mount Sinai is more than a hospital. It is a community.”
Edward Greenspon, Editor-in-Chief, The Globe and Mail
Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation is both
fortunate and privileged.
Fortunate because we enjoy enthusiastic
support from our compassionate and generous
donors as well as unparalleled dedication
from our volunteers and staff. Privileged
in that the hospital’s remarkable team of
doctors, nurses and researchers continue to
receive international acclaim for a wide
range of clinical and scientific achievements.
Fortunate and privileged because we
can build on our remarkable heritage to
create a remarkable present and future.
The result A spectacular year of accomplishments
in 2005-06. Consider the following:
The Best Medicine campaign reached
$293 million — with more than $40 million
raised in new pledges and one-time donations.
A record $32 million in revenue was
realized, which was, and is, an incredible
19 per cent increase over the previous year
in revenue and donations.
In this, our first full year at the foundation’s
helm, we were humbled by the exceptional
support we received from our donors.
For our foundation to achieve this level
of excellence in an intensely competitive
fundraising environment is truly inspiring. It
is a testament to the dedicated efforts of our
donor family and the entire fundraising team.
Everyone associated with our collective
efforts appreciates that the renowned
quality of Mount Sinai’s care is made possible
with our donors’ enduring philanthropic
support. We all understand that while
government provides funding to cover most
of our operating costs, it is donor funds that
enable Mount Sinai Hospital and our
Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute to
deliver the best patient care possible, with
renowned multi-disciplinary teams, stateof-the-art
technologies, and leading-edge
clinical programs. Our donors understand
clearly and appreciate deeply that their gifts
enable the ground-breaking scientific
research that takes place at our Samuel
Lunenfeld Research Institute by such worldrenowned
scientists as the Institute’s new
Director, Dr. Jim Woodgett, as well as
Dr. Tony Pawson, whose award-winning
studies focus on how signals transmitted
between cells in the human body form
patterns of communication that can trigger
certain diseases.
Our donor community comprises an
extraordinary group of individuals and
organizations. They recognize that it is
essential — and expensive — to remain at
the leading edge of research in order to
maintain and enhance the care to which we
are committed. Recognizing this, our
donors, at all levels, came through for
Mount Sinai. As in years past, several made
extraordinary commitments, among them
long-time supporters Gerald Schwartz and
Heather Reisman, who pledged $5 million to
the hospital’s highest priorities, which
brings their overall giving to an exceptional
$10 million. Their unrestricted giving is
particularly important to Mount Sinai, as it
provides us with the flexibility to respond to
the most urgent patient needs in a changing
and volatile health care environment.
Additionally, in 2005, Mount Sinai
Hospital celebrated the 10th Anniversary of
the Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre, established
with the vision of, and gifts from, Murray
and Marvelle Koffler and other donors. The
Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary, which has
raised more than $25 million since its
inception, set an ambitious new goal to
raise $3.5 million toward the Women’s and
Infants’ Health Program, making a positive
difference in the lives of new mothers and
their babies. In addition, Leadership Sinai,
Mount Sinai Foundation’s young leaders’
group, recently fulfilled a $1-million pledge
to Highest Priorities. Furthermore, they
have already committed an exceptional
$2 million to establish the Leadership Sinai
Fund for Excellence in Research at our
Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute (SLRI).
The SLRI’s future was brightened when
the Samuel Lunenfeld Charitable Foundation
generously committed another $7.5 million
to support its expansion. For more than two
decades, the Lunenfeld and Kunin families
have been instrumental in the development
and continued success of our internationally
recognized biomedical research institute.
This new gift will help the SLRI expand and
improve its environment, focusing on research
and clinical application of fundamental science
in cancer, high-risk pregnancy, autoimmune,
inflammatory, and cardiac disease.
It is paramount that we emphasize that
our donors’ valued contributions are used
with prudence and responsibility. We are
proud that our “cost to raise a dollar” is only
14 cents, well below the fundraising average
in the not-for-profit sector. Moving forward,
we will continue to apply rigorous standards
and stringent procedures to all aspects of
our fiscal and organizational management,
with absolute respect for the trust our
donors have placed in our hands.
Looking ahead, however, we at the foundation
must acknowledge the pressing need
to deepen and broaden our existing base of
support and more effectively reach the
diverse communities that have always been
part of Mount Sinai’s extended family. In the
coming years, we will embark on a range of
new initiatives, including a sustainable
annual giving campaign that will engage
donors at all levels from all communities.
As we take these steps to widen our
reach, we nevertheless remain grounded in
our heritage and the focus on excellence and
community support that have been Mount
Sinai’s hallmarks for close to a century. And
as we develop new supporters and community
partners, we recognize that it is this
strong historic foundation that will allow us
to embrace a bright and promising future for
our institution, and for our patients.
While we regret that we do not have
sufficient space to write about all our wonderful
contributors in the pages ahead, we
showcase a few that reflect the values
of our entire donor family. We sincerely
appreciate all our supporters, and that deep
gratitude is shared by our clinicians, staff
and researchers.
We thank you.
18 A COMMUNITY OF CARING
MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL FOUNDATION:
COMMUNITY, INSPIRATION AND GRATITUDE
“Mount Sinai Hospital is an incredible institution, a place of extraordinary
accomplishment, dedication, compassion and commitment.
We believe in its unique ability to offer outstanding treatment and
leadership, based on the very values of our heritage. It gives us great
pleasure to be able to give something back to our community, now
and for the future.” Joseph Lebovic, donor
The Best Medicine Campaign
Mount Sinai Hospital began not as an
institution, but as an idea — an idea that
involved providing healthcare services as
well as attending to the specialized needs of
a young and growing Jewish community in
Toronto during the early years of the 20th
Century. And right from the start, people in
the community who were willing to support
the cause with their time, their money and
their indomitable spirit were critically
important. By the time Mount Sinai opened
its doors as a state-of-the-art hospital on
University Avenue in 1953, the culture of giving
was as deeply ingrained in the institution as
the culture of excellence and innovation.
Today, Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation
is responsible for supporting the
research, teaching and patient care initiatives
of the hospital and its internationally
acclaimed Samuel Lunenfeld Research
Institute. But it’s the people — our amazing
team of donors, leaders and volunteers —
who, year after year, respond with generosity
and enthusiasm to the hospital’s ongoing
needs and ever-increasing demands.
Globe and Mail Editor-in-Chief Edward
Greenspon perhaps said it best when he
wrote “Mount Sinai is not just a hospital;
it is a community.”
Our community involves top-of-class
physicians, scientists, dedicated clinicians,
enthusiastic volunteers, students, and —
behind them all — donors who understand
the power of their philanthropy to make it all
happen.
One powerful testament of how it’s
happening is our current The Best Medicine
Mixing fun with philanthropy has
proved to be a winning combination for
Leadership Sinai. Its signature event,
Leadership Sinai Presents was London
Calling. More than 500 people
enjoyed a Beatles tribute band and
British-inspired cuisine in April 2005.
The money raised supported Leadership
Sinai’s $1-million pledge toward
the highest priorities of Mount Sinai.
campaign. When Mount Sinai embarked on
this effort under the visionary leadership of
Lawrence Bloomberg, we set an ambitious
— some might have thought unachievable
— goal of raising $400 million by 2008. Now
co-chaired by Bloomberg and Ed Sonshine,
The Best Medicine is not just the name of
one of the most successful campaigns in
Canadian hospital history: it’s a passionate
reality lived every single day by Mount
Sinai’s clinicians and scientists, staff,
volunteers and donors. This successful
campaign is making a tremendous impact
on patient care, teaching and research at
Mount Sinai, allowing us to expand facilities,
strengthen core programs, acquire
modern clinical equipment, renew patient
facilities and set new standards of excellence
in patient care.
This past year, Mount Sinai’s community
brought the total raised for The Best Medicine
to $293 million. Our admiration — as well as
our gratitude — for what our extraordinary
donors have been able to accomplish is
profound. At the same time, with ongoing
hospital requirements for capital — and
more than $200 million to raise in the next
few short years alone for areas like our
Women’s and Infants’ Health and Ambulatory
facilities — we recognize the need is
acute for continued, widespread community
involvement. In fact, the capital requirements
far surpass the goal for The Best Medicine
campaign, and our fundraising on behalf of
Mount Sinai will continue, as it must.
While government funds most of the
hospital’s operating budget, our donors
provide the resources that allow us the
flexibility and opportunity to push beyond
the delivery of basic healthcare services. It
is our donors who have helped make Mount
Sinai a leading research-based hospital capable
of translating healthcare innovations
from laboratory bench to bedside. It is our
donors who have made it possible for us to
embrace advances in medicine and take
leadership positions in innovative programs
such as patient and family-centred care. It is
our donors who have paved the way for the
hospital to be able to both serve the needs of
an urban population, and to conduct scientific
research of the highest order. It is our
donors who we thank for our ability to
deliver the best medicine to all people who
enter our doors.
With unprecedented generosity from
donors, 2005-2006 was a highly successful
year, featuring donations, large and small
from a wide range of sources. There were
multi-million-dollar contributions from
major donors, both corporate and individual,
many of whom are long-term supporters.
There were contributions from
thousands of people who participated in
not only raised money, they raised spirits
and a sense of community in everything
from golf tournaments to theatrical performances,
glittery galas to family-focused
walks, wine auctions to evenings of information
and fun. And — gratifyingly, considering
the competition for philanthropic
dollars — there were donations of every size
coming from people who chose to support
Mount Sinai Hospital and our Samuel
Lunenfeld Research Institute for the first
time this year. Simply and sincerely put,
every dollar counts.
Family of Generosity
Mount Sinai Hospital has a long tradition
of receiving key philanthropic gifts from
families, individuals, and organizations that
have been inspired by a particular need. It
has been through such inspired philanthropy
The Samuel Lunenfeld Charitable
Foundation generously commits
$7.5 million to expand the SLRI,
scheduled to be completed in 2007.
Mount Sinai celebrates the
establishment of the Joseph and
Mildred Sonshine and Family Centre
for Head and Neck Diseases.
The Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre
celebrates its 10th anniversary in
October and honours its Director,
Dr. Pamela Goodwin, the first Canadian
researcher to receive funding from the
Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation
celebrates one of its most successful
years ever, raising more than $40 million
in pledges and one-time gifts.
that the Lebovic brothers, two of Mount
Sinai’s most magnanimous donors, have
given $16 million over the past two decades,
$6 million of it for the Joseph and Wolf
Lebovic Centre. Vision and the recognition
of need also inspired Murray and Marvelle
Koffler to create both the Marvelle Koffler
Breast Centre and the Murray Koffler
Urologic Wellness Centre. This same spirit
was behind the Kimel Family’s $8 million
gift in 2004 to establish the Kimel Family
Centre for Advanced Medical Imaging, a
state-of-the-art centre for sophisticated
diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.
Isadore and Rosalie Sharp this year received
the Outstanding Philanthropist Award by
the Association of Fundraising Professionals,
in recognition of their extraordinary,
ongoing support of Mount Sinai Hospital;
in particular, their $5 million unrestricted
gift in 2000. That same generosity has
long inspired donors Lawrence and Judy
Tanenbaum — who have over the years
contributed more than $15 million to
Mount Sinai, including more than $2 million
to help address its highest priorities.
Highest Priorities Fund
Donations to our Highest Priorities Fund —
like the Tanenbaums’ — enable Mount Sinai
to meet evolving needs of our patients,
build on government funding, and capitalize
on new technologies and breakthroughs.
This kind of funding allows us to attract and
retain the best and most highly qualified
staff and provide them with the most
advanced tools.
A stand-out contribution of $5 million
to our highest priorities fund came last year
from long-time supporters Heather Reisman
and Gerald Schwartz, who not only
have served on our boards and committees,
but have provided generous funding in the
past for our Schwartz/Reisman Emergency
Centre and the Gerald P. Turner Nursing
Department — gifts that have a daily
impact on the lives of tens of thousands of
patients coming to Mount Sinai every year.
Capital Investment
To keep pace with the requirements of a
21st-Century hospital, the renewal of the
building is absolutely fundamental to
everything from patient care to recruiting
and retaining clinical and scientific talent.
Many key areas within Mount Sinai, now
more than 30 years old, are severely constrained
by outdated facilities, obsolete
equipment and old-fashioned technology.
Donors Ken Field and Vivian Berman
recognized the urgency of our deteriorating
physical space this year, with a $1-million
gift in support of renewal.
Technological renewal is equally critical.
Frank Stronach, Magna International’s
founder and Chairman, also stepped up this
year with a $1 million gift that will help
answer the need for state-of-the-art cardiology
equipment and put Mount Sinai at the
leading edge of cardiac care. Thanks to his
generosity, an advanced EchoPAC System
will allow Mount Sinai cardiologists to view
a complete image of the structure and function
of the heart in real-time, providing more
accurate diagnoses and shorter wait times.
The gift will also support upgrading of the
cardiology virtual network, which will allow
integration of the patient information system
throughout the hospital.
Recognizing Research Excellence
Research and its immediate and long-term
importance for healthcare at Mount Sinai
was celebrated in a generous donation from
the Kunin Family and Samuel Lunenfeld
Foundation this year, which will help fund
Auxiliary members Carole Grafstein and
Heather Gotlieb
AUXILIARY
The Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary
celebrated another successful gala
in 2005 with comedian Jerry Seinfeld
entertaining 2,000 people at Roy
Thomson Hall. The gala — which also
included the first-ever online dream
auction — generated more than
$1 million for neonatal care and
research. The recent 2006 gala featured
four-time Juno award-winner
Michael Bublé and generated a further
$1.5 million for neonatal care and
research at Mount Sinai.
the expansion of the Samuel Lunenfeld
Research Institute. And the importance of
supporting and sustaining young scientists
was recognized in several key donations this
year. Michael Lee-Chin’s $500,000 pledge
will provide stipends for the best and
brightest young researchers at the SLRI,
while TD Bank Financial Group’s $1-million
gift will support 25 postdoctoral and clinical
fellow researchers with competitive trainee
stipends to conduct research in their areas
of expertise. The support of young
researchers at the SLRI is critically important
not only to the Institute, but also to the
future of scientific discovery. “A scientist’s
first 10 years of independent research is his
or her most productive time,” notes Dr. Jim
Woodgett, the SLRI’s Director. “Most Nobel
Prize winners are recognized for the work
they do in that critical period. That’s when
they take risks, and are willing to investigate
the more difficult options.”
Surgery, one of Mount Sinai’s centres
of excellence, and education, a core priority,
both benefited from a $1.25 million gift from
RBC Financial, with donations from
Zimmer Canada, Stryker Canada and the
Gales Foundation, for the expansion of the
University of Toronto Surgical Skills Centre at
Mount Sinai, a leading-edge laboratory where
basic and complex surgical procedures are
learned and practiced. The Centre, recognized
internationally for its innovative techniques,
has been replicated as part of the curriculum
of the American College of Surgeons.
In the area of Women’s and Infants’
Health, Mount Sinai’s Valentine Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU) will soon
receive its first MRI-compatible incubator,
thanks to a donation in 2005 from Toronto
businessmen and brothers Daniel and
Leonard Drimmer. Every year at Mount
Sinai, nearly 300 babies are born weighing
less than 1,500 grams (3.3 pounds) and
about half weigh less than 1,000 grams
(2.2 pounds). A staggering number of
these babies grow up to have severe physical
and mental disabilities because of
brain damage.
Until now, neonatal doctors have not
been able to look in detail at the brains of
these most fragile patients, as MRI scanners
cause the babies too much stress. With this
gift, even the smallest, pre-term newborns
will be able to pass through the MRI’s magnets
without compromising the level of
monitoring and comfort they receive in the
womb-like environment of a NICU incubator.
base of thousands of annual donors whose
Our generous donors continue
to support our scientists and
researchers in the Samuel Lunenfeld
Research Institute (SLRI).
The Samuel Lunenfeld Charitable
Foundation has generously
committed $7.5 million to support
the expansion of Mount Sinai’s
internationally recognized Samuel
Lunenfeld Research Institute. For
two decades the Lunenfeld and
Kunin families have been instrumental
in the success of our
Research Institute, named in
honour of their grandfather.
A $1-million gift from The
Fred A. Litwin Family Foundation
establishes the Centre for Clinical
Genetics and Genomic Medicine,
currently under construction. After
seeing family and friends deal
with breast and colorectal cancer,
the groundbreaking research
underway in genomic medicine
inspired the family's first major
gift to research, and the establishment
in 2000 of The Fred A. Litwin
Centre for Cancer Genetics, within
the SLRI. This most recent gift
extends this interest in the field of
genetics and its application to
clinical practice. His long-standing
relationship with Mount Sinai
Hospital now includes total giving
of more than $2 million. “This has
been one of the most rewarding of
our involvements and it's exciting
to think there is a possibility of
making a difference,” says Litwin.
With a gift of $500,000,
Michael Lee-Chin and his company,
AIC Limited, established the
Michael Lee-Chin Young Scientists
Fund to assist exceptional new
researchers from around the world
22 A COMMUNITY OF CARING
GENERATIONS OF
SUPPORT
Wolf (l) and Joseph Lebovic
The deeply rooted tradition of
supporting Mount Sinai by many
of our donors — which crosses
generations and families — is
more than gratifying. Their
enduring commitment sustains
our ability to innovate, upgrade
and adapt to serve our diverse
community.
For more than two decades,
Mount Sinai has been the grateful
recipient of Joseph and Wolf
Lebovic’s generosity — a cumulative
gift of $16 million. With
their most recent gift to the SLRI,
the Lebovics’ generosity will
speed the process of genetic
discoveries and their application
to disease, translating from lab
bench to patient bedside.
Since their first gift to
Mount Sinai in 1966, Murray and
Marvelle Koffler have been dedicated
contributors to the Hospital,
giving their time and expertise,
as volunteers on our Board and
committees, as well as providing
outstanding funds to the Marvelle
Koffler Breast Centre and Murray
Koffler Urologic Wellness Centre.
With their generous history
of giving — both financially and
as active governance volunteers
— Lawrence and Judy Tanenbaum
have firmly established their
commitment to Mount Sinai.
Actively involved with the hospital
since the 1970s, the Tanenbaums’
commitment to their
community through philanthropy
has been instilled in their children,
who are also involved in
Mount Sinai.
The Kimel family first
contributed to the hospital in
1988 in honour of their late
mother, Eva Kimel, who was a
grateful patient at Mount Sinai.
Over the years, the Kimels’
support of Mount Sinai’s Nuclear
Medicine and MRI facilities has
enabled Mount Sinai to provide
our patients with the most
effective care. ■
continued generosity provides ongoing and essential funding
for the Hospital.
When Lois Patterson was diagnosed with colon cancer,
she started contributing between $25 and $100 a month to
Mount Sinai. Eight years later, she is leading a very healthy
life, and is celebrating this year with a $1,000 gift in support
of Dr. Steven Gallinger’s colon cancer research. “Dr. Gallinger
basically saved my life. I am very indebted to him for that,”
she says. “This year I felt I was able to make a larger donation.
I’m not sure I can every year, but I give whenever I can.
It’s important.”
Chris and Catherine Martin presented Mount Sinai with
$10,000 after hosting their first annual bowling night, in
honour of their baby, Lucas Andrew, born eight weeks premature,
who passed away. The Martins were touched by the
care they received from the staff in Mount Sinai’s NICU. With
their gift, they are remembering their son and supporting the
hospital.
Growing our Donor Community
There is no single motivation for deciding to give to the
hospital for the first time. Sometimes, it’s simply a matter
of seeing the need and having the resources to meet it. And
sometimes, it’s recognizing that we are all part of something
bigger, and that we can all contribute in some way.
Steve Miller made his first major gift this year, but his
involvement with Mount Sinai goes back to 1993 when he
and his regular golf foursome, including Miles Nadal and
Steven Hershenhorn, started the Men’s Golf Committee. For
Steve, who humbly admits that he never expected to be able
to donate a large amount personally, the tournament was a
way to contribute and teach his children, who regularly volunteer
for the event, about the importance of giving back.
Thus far, the tournament has raised $1.25 million for the
hospital. It started, Steve says, “with four guys sitting around
the table, talking about an idea.”
Members of the Carson family were inspired by the
example of their patriarch, the late Dr. Max Carson, who
spent more than 40 years at Mount Sinai. This year, his
widow, Annette, and her five children established the
Dr. Max Carson Memorial Scholarship Fund. His daughter
Judi says the family hopes to encourage others to find an
area they’re passionate about. Choosing Mount Sinai was
the easy part, she said. “The thing about Mount Sinai is that
you feel you’re at home because it’s such a caring culture.
My dad’s spirit is here.”
Mount Sinai’s many first-time donors — in fact, all of
our amazingly generous donors — seem to share a desire to
encourage others to participate at whatever level is possible.
First-time donor and retired Toronto businessman Kwok
Yuen Ho, who this year made a most generous gift to Mount
Sinai’s Rebecca MacDonald Centre for Arthritis and Autoimmune
Disease, put it most succinctly: “Every dollar, every
penny you can contribute helps … one drop can add up to
an ocean.”
FOUNDATION EVENTS
Mount Sinai Hospital is proud to be an integral part
of the community. Events allow our donors, volunteers,
staff, corporate partners and community to
get involved in the hospital, and connect with each
other, while providing much-needed funds for
patient programs and services. Inspired by a common
cause of caring, events raise profile, enhance
relationships, and raise resources.
More than 1,200 people came out to support Mount
24 A COMMUNITY OF CARING
OUR DONORS: BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF CARE
“My name is Devorah Kaufman. I’m in grade 4. My teacher assigned us
a project called Project GiveBack. Each girl was to choose her own
charity. I chose Mount Sinai Hospital … Enclosed please find a
cheque for $60.” Devorah Kaufman, budding philanthropist
Daniel and Leonard Drimmer
When Daniel and Leonard Drimmer made their
leadership gift to Mount Sinai, they wanted to
touch as many people as possible. The opportunity
to improve the lives of patients is extremely
rewarding, the brothers say, but what these firsttime
Mount Sinai donors found most unexpected
was the heartfelt appreciation staff expressed,
immediately and graciously recognizing the
impact of their gift on the community.
Kwok Yuen Ho
It was a brief encounter with Mount Sinai
rheumatologist Dr. Peter Lee that led businessman
KY Ho to pledge a remarkable $600,000 first-time
gift. Understanding that technology has the
power to improve a patient’s quality of life, KY
felt passionate about easing the pain of arthritis.
“If I can help minimize the suffering of others,”
he says, “it’s the right thing to do.”
Robert Ezer and Steve Suske
Recognizing the quality of the programs at Mount
Sinai, businessman Steve Suske doubled his gift to
the hospital. He also encouraged his business
partner, Robert Ezer, to match his donation,
resulting in a $100,000 pledge in support of Mount
Sinai’s Highest Priorities.
The Carson Family
For more than 40 years, Dr. Max Carson was on
staff in Mount Sinai’s Ray D. Wolfe Department of
Family Medicine. A dedicated and compassionate
family doctor, he went the extra mile for his
patients. Upon his passing, his wife Nan and his
five children — Judi, Terry, Jim, Bonnie and
Richard — founded a scholarship, awarded annually
to a family practice resident who embodies
those same qualities, carrying on Dr. Carson’s
spirit and memory.
The Miller Family
For Stephen Miller, giving back to his community
is a responsibility he takes seriously. For the past
12 years, Stephen has co-chaired Mount Sinai’s
Men’s Classic Golf Tournament. This year, he
celebrated his first major gift to Mount Sinai —
designated to highest priorities and Mood
Disorder Programs — setting an example for his
friends, family and fellow committee members.
Frank Stronach
Magna International Inc. and its founder and
Chairman Frank Stronach are long-time supporters
of Mount Sinai, most recently through a $1-million
gift that puts the hospital at the leading edge of
cardiac care. Through this gift, equipment will
enhance imaging and analysis of the heart, providing
diagnostic capabilities that few hospitals
in the world currently have, impacting patients
and the healthcare system.
SAMUEL LUNENFELD RESEARCH INSTITUTE
OF MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL
“If we put money into only looking after the clinical needs of the
population rather than research 100 years ago, patients with polio
would still be in iron lungs.”
Dr. Katherine Siminovitch, Samuel Lunenfeld
Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital
Scientific discovery is the foundation of
advancement in medicine. It is through
research that new knowledge, understanding
and therapies are found, ultimately
improving outcomes and quality of life of
patients at Mount Sinai Hospital and
throughout the world. Pushing the limit of
what will be possible in the future is what
some of the world’s very best researchers
are doing today — and have been doing for
the past for 20 years — right here at Mount
Sinai, in our very own Samuel Lunenfeld
Research Institute (SLRI).
It has been an honour to join the
SLRI as Director during this notable 20th
anniversary year in 2005, and to become a
part of this superb team, and great institution,
home to many of Canada’s highest
impact biomedical researchers. For example,
in the last Canadian Institutes of Health
Research (CIHR) grants competition our
scientists received $6.5 million in funding,
virtually the same as much larger research
enterprises in Toronto.
It is exhilarating, personally and professionally,
to follow the great directors who
precede me — from the founding in 1985
under Dr. Lou Siminovitch, to Dr. Alan
Bernstein who moved on to become the
inaugural president of CIHR, to the recent
leadership of Dr. Tony Pawson who stepped
down after an exceptional five-year term in
order to concentrate on his own superlative
research interests. We are particularly
proud of Tony as he was one of this year’s
five inductees into the Canadian Medical
Hall of Fame. I am deeply honoured to step
into Tony’s directorship shoes. I hope to
live up to his standards and to inspire all
of the Institute’s scientists — and to be
inspired by them.
Indeed, there has been much to be
inspired by in this past year. Our anniversary
celebration, Decades of Discovery, was
a reflection on the remarkable growth of
the SLRI, and a springboard for our exciting
future. With more than 700 staff including
THE BEST RESEARCH
TRAINING
The Research Training Centre at the
SLRI has supported the education of
the next generation of scientific pioneers
for over 10 years. Summer students,
graduate students, clinical fellows and
postdoctoral fellows work alongside the
SLRI’s world-leading Principal Investigators
— learning invaluable research
skills and expanding their own potential
to contribute to the latest biomedical
discoveries.
feet of lab space, and a $90 million budget
the SLRI is now considered one of the
world’s top 10 biomedical research centres.
We feature some of the world’s best scientific
minds and are large enough to make a
profound difference in the global scientific
community — and yet we are small enough
to retain the personal interactions that are
critical to exchange of ideas. Our awardwinning
researchers are taking steps every
day toward a better understanding of
chronic illnesses such as cancer, gastrointestinal
disease, heart disease, arthritis and
diabetes, as well as improving the health of
women and infants. We have chosen a
strategic focus on these areas because of
their tremendous impact on health, and
their alignment with Mount Sinai’s own
clinical centres of excellence.
There are great benefits to having a
world-renowned research institute in an
equally esteemed teaching hospital such as
Mount Sinai. We are perfectly poised to
translate the latest knowledge to the frontline
of patient care which enables us to
deliver the best medicine. Scientific discovery
can reveal the way a gene, a protein, or a
drug functions in the body, uncover previously
unimagined ways in which our cells
work, and identify better means to prevent,
detect and treat disease. Without these
intellectual advances, medicine cannot
progress. Through the intimate association
of the SLRI and the hospital, this research is
carried further by the intermingling of basic
scientists, clinical scientists, epidemiologists,
research fellows, and physicians. All diseases,
no matter how complex or devastating,
have as their root cause underlying aberrations
that we can discover and then design
effective interventions. For example, before
committing resources to expensive drug
development, we can accurately predict
whether switching off a particular protein
will be useful. If so, we can then screen for
molecules that specifically interfere with
that protein — effectively increasing our
“batting average.”
This year has certainly been marked by
outstanding work by our researchers. Our
ability to secure peer-reviewed research
funds and infrastructure grants has continued
to increase at a truly impressive rate.
As a few examples, we received $15 million
from the Canada Foundation for Innovation
(CFI) for new equipment and toward an
expansion in the area of Systems Biology.
Dr. Andras Nagy has been highly funded for
his pioneering work on human embryonic
stem cells, Dr. James Dennis heads a
CIHR-funded team project that investigates
the genetic differences among patients
who are sensitive or resistant to the SARS
virus; and Genome Canada will support a
$12-million project, led by Dr. Tony Pawson,
on protein interactions, in collaboration
with the University of Western Ontario.
The SLRI is excited to have recruited and
gained the fresh energies of two remarkable
researchers in 2005. Dr. Anne-Claude
28 A COMMUNITY OF CARING
DECADES OF DISCOVERY —
A FUTURE FULL
OF POSSIBILITIES
Dr. Tony Pawson, Dr. Lou Siminovitch
and Dr. Alan Bernstein — previous
Directors of the SLRI
The Samuel Lunenfeld Research
Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital
celebrated its 20th anniversary on
June 23, 2005 at a gala called
Decades of Discovery.
Since its inception, the Institute
has been at the forefront of
revolutionary scientific discovery.
This has raised the SLRI to one of
the top 10 biomedical research
centres in the world. Our reputation
has been earned through the
passionate dedication of our
investigators, students and staff,
who work towards leading-edge
health-related science.
By having breakthrough research
located within a renowned hospital
such as Mount Sinai, we can
accelerate translation of our
research discoveries into improvements
in patient care.
The future is bright for the
Institute. Fall of 2007 will mark
the completion of an expansion
that will increase our research
space by 50 per cent. This will
coincide with the refurbishing of
our current laboratories. It will be
located above the soon-to-becompleted
Toronto Centre for
Phenogenomics — a $68-million
collaboration between four
hospitals where mouse models
will provide insight into disease
in humans. The capital work is possible
thanks to generous donations
from the Lunenfeld, Kunin, and
Lebovic families. These projects will
continue to ensure that our worldclass
researchers will have the
space and equipment to compete
both nationally and internationally.
A successful past and a
promising future — the SLRI’s
scientific discoveries will continue
to contribute to the best medicine
today, and tomorrow. ■
Gingras trained at the Institute for Systems
Biology in Seattle. She is an authority in the
field of proteomics (the comprehensive
analysis of proteins), and in the cellular
pathways that control cell growth, with
important implications for cancer and diabetes.
Dr. Helen McNeill comes to us from
Cancer Research UK in London, England.
Helen is an expert in the genetics of cellular
organization, and uses fruit flies and mice
to investigate processes that govern how
tissues are formed. In summer, 2006, we will
welcome Dr. Daniel Drucker to the SLRI.
Dan is an exceptionally gifted clinician
scientist and will further enhance our
ability to transfer discoveries from the
bench to bedside. We will also be combing
the globe for other talented scientists — we
will continue to build on our current success.
Our researchers lead the country in
competing for funds for their innovative
research programs and are supported by
federal and provincial grants as well as
charities such as the Canadian Cancer
Society and the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
This year alone, we received over $50 million
in such support. Yet the SLRI would not be
able to perform at such a leading, transformational
level without the generosity of
the donor community, which shares our
scientists’ passion for research excellence.
One example of this generosity is the
expansion of the SLRI that has been made
possible by gifts from the Lunenfeld, Kunin,
and Lebovic families which will increase our
laboratory space by 50 per cent. This new
facility will open in the fall of 2007, followed
by rejuvenation of our existing space —
allowing our world-leading scientists to
work in an equally leading-edge environment.
It is an exciting time to lead the Institute,
and I look forward to nurturing the
continued successes that our future holds.
Dr. Andras Nagy — Centre for Stem
Cells and Tissue Engineering
Scientists are working towards finding ways
to help stem cells — which have the ability to
develop into many different kinds of cells —
regenerate tissue. In June 2005, Dr. Nagy and his
team of researchers developed Canada’s first two
lines of human embryonic stem cells. “We hope
to one day offer a cure for diseases that are now
considered incurable,” says Dr. Nagy.
Dr. Katherine Siminovitch — Centre for
Genomic Medicine
Through genomics — the large-scale analysis of
genes and their functions — and through close
research collaboration between basic scientists
and clinicians, advances in defining the causes of
complex diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and
inflammatory bowel disease are being translated
into clinical benefit. “Physicians from Mount
Sinai are key players on our research teams,” says
Dr. Siminovitch. “They provide clinical insights
needed to drive medically-relevant research and
to ensure rapid translation of such research into
clinical practice.”
Dr. Frank Sicheri — Centre for
Systems Biology
Dr. Sicheri investigates the structure of protein
molecules and their binding partners to understand
how signalling processes in the cell function and
how their disruption contributes to diseases such
as cancer, inflammation and viral infection.
“His work is on the cutting edge internationally,”
says Dr. Stephen Lye, Associate Director of the
SLRI. “He’s providing an atomic view of how the
cell works.”
Dr. Mei Zhen — Centre for Neurodevelopment
and Cognitive Function
Dr. Zhen and her colleagues are learning about
disorders of the human brain by studying the
nervous systems of organisms ranging from
worms (called C. elegans) to mice. Animal models
for schizophrenia, depression and anxiety have
already made significant contributions to understanding
the functioning of the brain and spinal
cord. “We are working toward understanding
what happens at the molecular level in the
human nervous system,” says Dr. Zhen.
are derived from the complete financial statements of Mount
Sinai Hospital Foundation of Toronto as at March 31, 2006 and
for the year then ended on which we expressed an opinion
without reservation in our report dated May 2, 2006. The fair
The Foundation is incorporated under the laws
of Ontario as a corporation without share capital.
distributes funds and/or the income therefrom
for the advancement of medical research,
education and improvement of patient care
at Mount Sinai Hospital (the “Hospital”).
The summarized financial statements of
Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation of Toronto
(the “Foundation”) are reported using the
restricted fund method of accounting for contributions.
The Foundation ensures, as part of
its fiduciary responsibilities, that all funds
received with a restricted purpose are expended
for the purpose for which they are provided.
Accounts payable and accrued liabilities
include amounts payable to the Hospital of
$14,345,932 (2005 — $15,851,339).
The Foundation is a public foundation
registered under the Income Tax Act (Canada)
and, as such, is exempt from income taxes
and able to issue donation receipts for income
tax purposes under Registration Number
The Foundation has opted for the early
adoption of The Canadian Institute of Chartered
Accountant’s new recommendations for
accounting for financial instruments. In
preparing its financial statements for fiscal
2006, the Foundation has applied the guidelines
of the standard with effect from April 1,
2004. Based on the guidance in the standard,
investments are recorded at market value with
changes in unrealized gains and losses being
recorded in the statement of revenue and
expenses and changes in fund balances.
“THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEND WEEKS ON END WITH BRILLIANT MEN AND WOMEN,
ALL OF WHOM ARE AT THE TOP OF THEIR PROFESSION AND UTTERLY COMMITTED
TO THEIR WORK, WAS ONE OF THE MOST INSPIRING EXPERIENCES I’VE HAD...
YOU WERE BRAVE ENOUGH TO SHOW ME THE FULL HUMAN RANGE OF WHAT
GOES ON IN A HOSPITAL — THE LIGHT AND THE DARK OF YOUR WORK, ITS UPS
AND DOWNS, YOUR CERTAINTIES AND TRIUMPHS AS WELL AS YOUR DOUBTS AND
DISAPPOINTMENTS, EVEN YOUR GRIEF — ALL OF WHICH MADE FOR A MOVING
STORY ABOUT DEDICATED PEOPLE DOING THEIR BEST AT AN IMPOSSIBLE JOB.”
