Robert Ezer and Steve Suske Recognizing the quality of the programs at Mount Sinai, businessman Steve Suske doubled his gift to the hospital. He also encouraged his business partner, Robert Ezer, to match his donation, resulting in a $100,000 pledge in support of Mount Sinai’s Highest Priorities. The Carson Family For more than 40 years, Dr. Max Carson was on staff in Mount Sinai’s Ray D. Wolfe Department of Family Medicine. A dedicated and compassionate family doctor, he went the extra mile for his patients. Upon his passing, his wife Nan and his five children — Judi, Terry, Jim, Bonnie and Richard — founded a scholarship, awarded annually to a family practice resident who embodies those same qualities, carrying on Dr. Carson’s spirit and memory. The Miller Family For Stephen Miller, giving back to his community is a responsibility he takes seriously. For the past 12 years, Stephen has co-chaired Mount Sinai’s Men’s Classic Golf Tournament. This year, he celebrated his first major gift to Mount Sinai — designated to highest priorities and Mood Disorder Programs — setting an example for his friends, family and fellow committee members. Frank Stronach Magna International Inc. and its founder and Chairman Frank Stronach are long-time supporters of Mount Sinai, most recently through a $1-million gift that puts the hospital at the leading edge of cardiac care. Through this gift, equipment will enhance imaging and analysis of the heart, providing diagnostic capabilities that few hospitals in the world currently have, impacting patients and the healthcare system. 26 A COMMUNITY OF CARING

It is through research that new knowledge, understanding and therapies are found, ultimately improving outcomes and quality of life of patients at Mount Sinai Hospital and throughout the world. Pushing the limit of what will be possible in the future is what some of the world’s very best researchers are doing today — and have been doing for the past for 20 years — right here at Mount Sinai, in our very own Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute (SLRI). It has been an honour to join the SLRI as Director during this notable 20th anniversary year in 2005, and to become a part of this superb team, and great institution, home to many of Canada’s highest impact biomedical researchers. For example, in the last Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) grants competition our scientists received $6.5 million in funding, virtually the same as much larger research enterprises in Toronto. It is exhilarating, personally and professionally, to follow the great directors who precede me — from the founding in 1985 under Dr. Lou Siminovitch, to Dr. Alan Bernstein who moved on to become the inaugural president of CIHR, to the recent leadership of Dr. Tony Pawson who stepped down after an exceptional five-year term in order to concentrate on his own superlative research interests. We are particularly proud of Tony as he was one of this year’s five inductees into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. I am deeply honoured to step into Tony’s directorship shoes. I hope to live up to his standards and to inspire all of the Institute’s scientists — and to be inspired by them. Indeed, there has been much to be inspired by in this past year. Our anniversary celebration, Decades of Discovery, was a reflection on the remarkable growth of the SLRI, and a springboard for our exciting future.
