the leading edge of research in order to maintain and enhance the care to which we are committed. Recognizing this, our donors, at all levels, came through for Mount Sinai. As in years past, several made extraordinary commitments, among them long-time supporters Gerald Schwartz and Heather Reisman, who pledged $5 million to the hospital’s highest priorities, which brings their overall giving to an exceptional $10 million. Their unrestricted giving is particularly important to Mount Sinai, as it provides us with the flexibility to respond to the most urgent patient needs in a changing and volatile health care environment. Additionally, in 2005, Mount Sinai Hospital celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre, established with the vision of, and gifts from, Murray and Marvelle Koffler and other donors. The Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary, which has raised more than $25 million since its inception, set an ambitious new goal to raise $3.5 million toward the Women’s and Infants’ Health Program, making a positive difference in the lives of new mothers and their babies. In addition, Leadership Sinai, Mount Sinai Foundation’s young leaders’ group, recently fulfilled a $1-million pledge to Highest Priorities. Furthermore, they have already committed an exceptional $2 million to establish the Leadership Sinai Fund for Excellence in Research at our Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute (SLRI). The SLRI’s future was brightened when the Samuel Lunenfeld Charitable Foundation generously committed another $7.5 million to support its expansion. For more than two decades, the Lunenfeld and Kunin families have been instrumental in the development and continued success of our internationally recognized biomedical research institute. This new gift will help the SLRI expand and improve its environment, focusing on research and clinical application of fundamental science in cancer, high-risk pregnancy, autoimmune, inflammatory, and cardiac disease. It is paramount that we emphasize that our donors’ valued contributions are used with prudence and responsibility. We are proud that our “cost to raise a dollar” is only 14 cents, well below the fundraising average in the not-for-profit sector. Moving forward, we will continue to apply rigorous standards and stringent procedures to all aspects of our fiscal and organizational management, with absolute respect for the trust our donors have placed in our hands. Looking ahead, however, we at the foundation must acknowledge the pressing need to deepen and broaden our existing base of support and more effectively reach the diverse communities that have always been part of Mount Sinai’s extended family. In the coming years, we will embark on a range of new initiatives, including a sustainable annual giving campaign that will engage donors at all levels from all communities. As we take these steps to widen our reach, we nevertheless remain grounded in our heritage and the focus on excellence and community support that have been Mount Sinai’s hallmarks for close to a century. And as we develop new supporters and community partners, we recognize that it is this strong historic foundation that will allow us to embrace a bright and promising future for our institution, and for our patients. While we regret that we do not have sufficient space to write about all our wonderful contributors in the pages ahead, we showcase a few that reflect the values of our entire donor family. It gives us great pleasure to be able to give something back to our community, now and for the future.” Joseph Lebovic, donor The Best Medicine Campaign Mount Sinai Hospital began not as an institution, but as an idea — an idea that involved providing healthcare services as well as attending to the specialized needs of a young and growing Jewish community in Toronto during the early years of the 20th Century. And right from the start, people in the community who were willing to support the cause with their time, their money and their indomitable spirit were critically important. By the time Mount Sinai opened its doors as a state-of-the-art hospital on University Avenue in 1953, the culture of giving was as deeply ingrained in the institution as the culture of excellence and innovation. Today, Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation is responsible for supporting the research, teaching and patient care initiatives of the hospital and its internationally acclaimed Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute. But it’s the people — our amazing team of donors, leaders and volunteers — who, year after year, respond with generosity and enthusiasm to the hospital’s ongoing needs and ever-increasing demands. Globe and Mail Editor-in-Chief Edward Greenspon perhaps said it best when he wrote “Mount Sinai is not just a hospital; it is a community.” Our community involves top-of-class physicians, scientists, dedicated clinicians, enthusiastic volunteers, students, and — behind them all — donors who understand the power of their philanthropy to make it all happen.
