Factors Affecting Exit Devices

Door Width
Specify exact door width. This determines what size device
is supplied. If door width not specified, 3' is furnished
standard.
Stile Width
Determines which series can be used because of the
dimension of the active or inactive case. In conjunction with
the door width, the width of the device is also affected.
Door Height
Rod lengths and extension rod requirements for surface
vertical or concealed vertical rod devices are determined by
height.
Undercut
Bottom rods and bottom latches or bolts for vertical rod
applications are affected by the distance between the
bottom of the door and the surface to which the strike will
apply; 1/4" minimum, 3/4" maximum.
Thickness
When trim is used with a device it is affected by thickness
as is the length of fasteners and cylinders.
Stop Height
The type of strike and affect on backsets is
determined by the stop (5/8" standard)
Glass Bead
In the case of touch bar devices, series 19, 24 and 25,
glazing bead or trim can interfere with the device requiring
shim kits with modified trim and/or device.
Fire Labels
As a component of a fire door assembly, exit devices must
meet special requirements.
Other
Factors such as transom panels, sill conditions and
astragals can affect exit device selection.
Pairs
When devices will occur on paired door leaves, order them
together.
Materials
Unusual door or frame materials can affect device selection
such as channel iron frames, blade stop frames, hollow core
doors and mineral core doors.
