WOB Sailing News
by WOB Admin
“What a great couple of months we have had.
Extreme 40 came and went in a blur of close inshore
action. World Cup will now be coming to Qingdao
in 2013 and two Qingdao teams won the ISAF
CCOR (Beneteau First 40) Regatta.
The competition was strong with teams and
sailors from all around China, Taiwan, Hong Kong,
South Korea, Japan and America. It is a truly
international regatta with many other countries
represented in the crews.”
To add to the excitement Clipper
came and went with much fanfare,
lots of parties and some fabulous
stories of tales tall but true. The
two Australian teams really sailed
very well but the Qingdao home
team really won everyone’s heart
with their dogged determination.
So many people came to
celebrate their homecoming as
the firecrackers, lions and drums
welcomed them to Qingdao. It
was just a short few days later that
thousands of people turned out
on land and water to send Team
Qingdao and the rest of the fleet on
their way.
Grey skies, drizzling rain and cold
wind did nothing to dampen the
spirits as a whole flotilla of boats
from little Wetas to the MSA ship
and everything in between came
out to watch the start of the next leg
of the clipper round the world race.
The May Day regatta was a blast
with the Flying Tigers being made
available for a wide variety of sailors
to use on the day. Competition was
close with a shifty light breeze and
some interesting tactics. A fishing
boat used as a rounding mark in the
marina was an unusual addition to
the day and meant there was little
room for error. One or two close
encounters really got the heart rate
up – and that was just the fisherman
Qingdao’s CCOR ISAF regatta, first and second place getters…
watching in bemused silence from
the back deck as a whole fleet of
yachts bore down on their vessel.
The J 80’s are constantly seen
out and about sailing the local
waters training, practicing and
taking people out to try sailing.
In addition Flying Tigers are
available most Sundays for fun
sails and the occasional race.
Feel free to contact Steven Gao
(13906393298), Jeppe Mortensen
of J 80 fame (13884637870), or
WOB (qingdaowobsail@gmail.
com) to get more information. If
you know someone who would
like to go out for a fun sail let us
know and we can get them onto
one of the yachts heading out.
In other news the flying tri of
Goran Andersson called ANGELA
is getting prepared to do a short
(hopefully) speedy trip to Weihai.
His trimaran is looking sharp after
being slipped recently and is kitted
up to do some fast work out off the
East China coastline.
Once the sailing league starts we
should see some stiff competition
for space on the water with Qu
Chun’s Far East 26’s out there
preparing for the monthly
competition as well as a range of
other sailing boats. WOB will be
making sure they are competitive
against the other teams out there
and will be vying for spots and
points. Looks like as well as Far
East 26’s there will be some Flying
Tiger action, 420’s and Optimists
involved in the Qingdao sailing league.
If you are interested in being a part
of sailing, please send WOB sailing
(qingdaowobsail@gmail.com) a
brief email and we will include you
in our briefings for events, regattas
and fun sails.
Welcome On Board (WOB) and
have fun, safe days on the water…
