Dear friends & expats,
It is with sadness that I say, that after just 1 ½
years in Qingdao, my family is being
repatriated back to the United States. It was a
decision that we just found out about
mid-June. I will miss working with our great
staff and valued advertisers.
However, I am pleased to announce that my
replacement as Editor is Carla Vassmer. Ms.
Vassmer brings a wealth of professional
experience to Qingdao Expat Magazine. She
comes from a corporate work background
including Arthur Andersen, and has edited
and published everything from travel
brochures to local newspapers.
Carla and her family had a previous foreign
assignment in The Netherlands. She has lived
in Qingdao with her husband for almost two
years. While here, Carla has served on the
Winter Ball and Charity Committees, as well
as coordinating weekly expat lunches and
Mahjong games. Please join me in welcoming
Carla to our dedicated team of volunteers.
This July/August combo issue is jam-packed
with great articles and information about fun
things to do in Qingdao, and even around
China. So get going. Happy reading!
And as always, please
support our advertisers.
Without them, this
magazine could not be
published.
With gratitude,
Museums & Theatre …
Introducing Little Ones
to Arts & Culture in Qingdao
Living in Qingdao w/Kids by Jen Johnson
On a recent Saturday our family visited the Qingdao Municipal Museum, where my oldest daughter, who
had visited on a school trip played tour guide. We ambled through the massive space admiring the giant
stone Buddha's and stumbling over poor English translations in the initial exhibit rooms. Just as I
was about to write the experience off as being non-kid friendly, we arrived in an area that changed my
mind. The Qingdao Folk Culture Exhibition and the Interactive
Zone, both located on the second floor at the end of a
vast corridor, housed the most interesting items.
The Folk Culture exhibit contains items Chinese used traditionally
in daily life in the not-so-distant past and highlights
local festivals. But it is the aptly named Interactive Zone
that proved most interesting to my kids (and probably others
on summer holiday). The Interactive Zone allows kids
(for a small fee) to create traditional Chinese wood cut
prints. For 2 yuan, you purchase a length of thin paper long
enough to complete two Chinese zodiac animal prints or
one print of Qingdao scenery. Children apply paint to four
different wood cut prints, carefully layering each color over
the last. On our visit, a thoughtful, English speaking volunteer
(a Chemistry student at Qingdao University) walked us
through each step. If you want to preserve your creation,
you can sign it, have it chopped with a Chinese insignia and
laminated for an additional 2 yuan per print.
Unless your kid is a history buff, the exhibits at the far left
end of the second floor (History of Qingdao: Looking Back to
Ancient History I and the cleverly named History of Qingdao:
Looking Back to Ancient History II) might instead have your little one looking back for the door! If you go
with an art loving kid, it is definitely worth heading straight to the Folk Culture and Interactive areas.
When your first arrive at the museum just head right, instead of left at the entrance. Walk the length of
the corridor and take the elevator by the Tea Room to the second floor. Arm yourself with a pocket full
of one yuan notes, and allow your children to experiment with the printing process. Once they have successfully
completed this project, move on to the Qingdao Folk Culture Exhibition and then head back
downstairs for an inexpensive snack or juice at the smoke free Tea Room.
Take a Trip to the Theatre!
Consider taking in a performance with your children at
the Qingdao Theatre (located on the South side of Jimo
Market.)
by Jen Johnson
Adventures in Qingdao by
Qingdao 山 水 Adventures is made up of a multinational
group of adventure seekers who wish to
help you have a convenient and safe chance to
take advantage of the many outdoor opportunities
and historical resources
found around Qingdao. We
always follow the 'Leave No
Trace' model and hope that all
participants will respect the
property of locals. Trekkers of
all ages are welcome to join.
But please email us if you have
any concerns about safety,
difficulty, etc.
If you have family or friends
visiting, we can provide 'off-the
-beaten-trail' tours for very reasonable
prices. We also have
experience leading trips for
schools and businesses that
wish to provide their students
and colleagues with rewarding
team-building activities and
corporate outings.
Qingdao 山 水 Adventures has
had an eventful summer thus
far, and this July we hope you
can join us for at least one adventure!
On Saturday July 11, we will go
to one of the more isolated
Daoist temples at Laoshan
called Hualou Palace. The trip
begins at 8:00am leaving from
Crowne Plaza. After a moderate
hike and exploration of the
700 year-old palace grounds,
including epigraphs and
Gingko trees of the same age,
we should make it back to
town around 4:00pm.
Hualou Palace was built during the height of the
spread of Quanzhen Daoism in the Yuan Dynasty
(1271-1368), and most of the temples were built
under the Complete Perfection (Quanzhen) sect.
Supposedly, the temple has been continuously
inhabited by monks since the 14th century. Either
way, the countryside stroll should make for
a nice beak from the buzz of downtown.
On July 25, we will be exploring another island.
We will leave downtown around 6 a.m. and take
a boat out in the morning. We can fish during the
afternoon and then BBQ our catch-of
-the-day at night before camping out
or staying in an islander's small resort.
Sunday the 26th, we will wake
up and explore the island some
more before coming back into town
late that afternoon.
For August, we plan to do some rockclimbing,
tunnel exploring and bluehole
swimming expeditions, and you
can get more information about all
of our trips by joining our mailing list.
To do this email marcus@
qingdaossadventures.com or visit
www.qingdaossadventures.com. All
participants must pre-register online
before attending a trip.
Prices always range depending on
the number of people that register,
amount of equipment needed, and
the nature of the trip. For the hiking
trip on July 11, the approximate cost
is 50 rmb per person, and for the
island over-night trip on July 25,
around 200 rmb. Gear needs vary
from trip to trip and prices are always
subject to change, thus its best
if you join our mailing list to get all
the latest updates.
So don't hesitate, put on your boots
and come explore the hills of China's
largest seaside mountain with us!
Jimo Lu Trek:
Carla Vassmer
Qingdao by
A
s an avid shopper at Jimo Market over the past two years, I decided to make an investigative
trip with my friend Irene Weng, along with a notepad and compass. My usual trips to Jimo are
to my “set” booths of vendors — the ones I have bargained with and succeeded in buying quality
goods for the lowest prices possible. With the pushing and shoving of the masses, I have
never continued walking down those long dark aisles, to investigate what new treasures might be beyond
my comfort zone.
Perimeter
Jimo Market is bordered by Linqing Lu, Gaohang Lu, Liaosheng Lu and the
Qingdao Theatre (purple building on the south end). Since Jimo Market’s exterior
was renovated, shops have filled the perimeter on all four sides. We concluded
if you do not want to go inside, you can find almost everything you need
on the outside, with the same prices (I compared!). Our best find in one of
these shops, is the “rhinestone lady” (#39-40). If you are missing a rhinestone
from jewelry or clothing you should visitthis shop. Irene had a small stone
replaced on her watch, including glue & labor for 1 yuan. Shops were also selling
zipper pulls, wrapping paper and pull ribbons, pizza, chops, cross stitch, tea sets and more!
Basement 2 (B2)
Next up, into Jimo Market and down the two sets of escalators to the lower basement
(B2). In the past I had seen so many shops selling jeans, but never considered
them as just figured there would be no chance of fitting correctly not only
size but length. I learned that the huge jean shop behind the escalators has a
tailor sitting at the entrance. She does alterations and hemming for 5 元 .
Out & About in
Thanks to Irene, I have learned what the ceiling signs now point to, too! Walk
towards the “underground” aisle (gold with red characters sign hanging from
ceiling says “fabric”) you will find a huge hat store on your left, then fabric vendors.
Next on your right, you can enter “Korea Town” (silver sign). It may have
originally been Korean stores, now are Chinese owned. In this area you will find
cross stitch kits, wall clocks, watches, clothing and in the “back left side” a huge
stationery store, with a large selection of wrapping paper, the “pull” Chinese ribbons
(10 for 3 元 ), etc.
Walk back to the escalator “central” area, walking down the aisles you will find shops selling – jeans,
souvenirs, silk flowers, towels, men, women and children’s clothing (including, t-shirts and North Face
jackets), woven goods, men’s ready-made suits (no alterations), and silk items (shops #108-110) to
name a few. In this “back section” it seemed about 20% of the shops were empty, but you never know
what might open up in the future. Down one of these aisles you will find a single escalator used as up
and down stairs.
Basement 1 (B1)
Up to B1, close by (#6) is a very nice pajama store where the shop keeper told
me she “has pj’s that would fit me”, so sizes to fit westerners, too! Walking to
the “back” or away from the central double escalators in the far distance, you
will find a shop with formal gowns (#29). They measure to order not only evening
wear, but outfits women could use for Halloween or costume parties including
an authentic hat (160 元 ).
Price of red gown: 360 rmb
Second Floor 2F
Walking back to the central double escalator you pass bedding, seat covers, clothing, etc. Take the
escalators up to the 2 nd floor. This is where the copies of designer purses, wallets, back packs and
12 QINGDAO EXPAT MAGAZINE

An in-depth Exploration
luggage are on one side. Other side, shoes “forever”. If you stand with the purses behind
you, with the wall blocking the up/down escalator on your right, you will see the shoe aisle
in front of you seems to go “forever” in the distance. If you walk down this aisle, up the
stairs and down, you will find many more stores full of purses, golf bags, clothing, etc. I
have found more unique items here, but also have found the vendors are not as willing to
bargain as their items may be higher quality. Keep walking this main aisle (west) to the
“back”, you will see windows to the outside and a small closed in staircase on your right
… go down these stairs to discover a jade vendors. I have not “mastered” the art of the
jade purchase, but am sure you can find whatever you might like here! You can walk outside of Jimo
here.
Main Floor 1F
Back to the main 1 st floor, where many of you have ventured and spent a lot of 元 , you will find pearls
(#1083 Nina-Star Pearls), souvenirs, silk items, leather belts & purses, jade, “Rolex” watches (#1039),
even Wii games– beware if you have a U.S. system, may not work. Weeks leading up to the Chinese New
Year, many of these shops close or totally change their goods to be the red lanterns and all New Year related
items.
Thank you Irene, for spending a few hours with me at Jimo Market, I feel more comfortable to roam
around, and not get lost!
Homeward Bound
Kathy Davies
Expatriate Stages ... by
S
ometimes, it seems like just yesterday
that Jeff and I arrived
in Qingdao: other times, it seems like eons
ago. Now, it doesn’t seem possible that
we’ve been gone from Qingdao for almost
5 months. As I write, we’re beginning to
feel settled in Peoria and are nearing the
end of relocation activities - unpacking
boxes, taking care of paperwork, establishing
contact with new physicians, working
on our house and yard, meeting new
people, and exploring our new town.
Aside from having a million things to do,
our move has gone quite smoothly.
Throughout the process, I’ve experienced
ups and downs, mixed
emotions, and moments
of exhaustion.
Trying to stay very
organized always is a
huge help in making
our transitions easier.
DEPARTING QINGDAO
As soon as we found
out that we were
repatriating, I began to
research current information
about Peoria.
Also, began working on
completing what
seemed like endless
“To Do” lists, projects,
and paperwork. Even
though time was short,
I tried to squeeze in as
many last minute activities and shopping
trips as possible. From the time that the
packers loaded our container to when we
moved into our house, our lives were filled
with suitcases and chaos. Sometimes, I
still can’t remember where I’ve stored
something. As expected, the hardest part
of leaving Qingdao was saying zai jian to
our friends, both expats and Chinese.
ARRIVING HOME AND UNPACKING
Although still quite jetlagged, we immediately
were confronted with things to do,
regarding setting up our new household:
Being an expatriate
allows us to learn a
broader understanding
of the world, which few
have the opportunity to
experience.
Even if you don’t
realize it immediately,
you have a unique
understanding of
your culture from
an outside view.
obtaining homeowner’s insurance, closing on
our house, buying cars and getting car insurance,
hooking up water, electricity, and gas
service, obtaining new driver’s licenses, to
name a few. For me, deciding which company/package
to use for our television, Internet,
and telephone was most frustrating. Once
our shipments arrived, we were buried in
boxes. Whenever I’m tired and achy, I always
say that I really could use a Chinese massage.
ADJUSTING
One of the major conveniences of living in the
United State again is being able to fully converse
in English. Our house is conveniently
located to Jeff’s work, shopping,
a bank, gas station, and restaurants,
so that also helps to simplify
our lives. Another greatly
appreciated freedom is having
our own cars. Although I’m thankful
for having my wonderful driver
in Qingdao, it’s nice to be able to
spontaneously go wherever I
want.
So far, one of the most difficult
things for me has been learning
how to go to the grocery
store. The first time I walked
into Wal-Mart, I felt as lost as the
first time I walked into Carrefour.
The store was huge and
brightly lit; I didn’t know where to
find anything, and the frozen
food aisles seemed endless. The
variety in all of the groceries is wonderful; yet,
overwhelming. It still takes me a long time to
go grocery shopping.
Being an expatriate allows us to learn a
broader understanding of the world, which few
have the opportunity to experience. Even if
you don’t realize it immediately, you have a
unique understanding of your culture from an
outside view. Following repatriation, settling
back into your old routine can be frustrating
ing. Meeting new friends who share your interests
and gathering information about local
events takes time. Many people have
lived in the same town for their entire
lives and have no concept of what you’re
talking about, when you enthusiastically
start talking about China and your adventures.
Even good friends are busy with
their families and own commitments.
For the spouse and children, repatriation
is like starting over in many ways.
Children also may be making new
friends and entering a new school. As
with adults, they’ve experienced things
that most other kids won’t understand. In
most cases, the spouse will be starting
from the beginning if planning to look for
a new job.
Following 3 ½ years in Qingdao, we’re
happy to be homeowners again. On the
other hand, we will always have fond
memories of Qingdao, our friends there,
and adventures. A few of the things that
I miss most are foot massages, outings
with the ladies, and the opportunity to
travel throughout Asia. Peoria, Illinois
isn’t a huge, urban town; but it’s a
nice place to live. For the most part, people
have been very kind to us.
beauty, elegance and history of fine
Chinese craftsmanship is brought to life in Leo’s
Original authentic antiques are painstakingly restored and the
highest quality reproductions are masterfully created by more
of quality controls every detail is carefully attended to right
reproduced Chinese antique pieces
that are carefully joined without
nails.
Tables, Cabinets, Chairs, Desks
and other Chinese reproduction
antiques can be custom made.
Leo’s Showroom
While still in Qingdao, try to take advantage
of as many opportunities as you
can. Then, you’ll have more memories to
take back home with you. When the time
comes to repatriate, try to relax and take
things one day at a time. Repatriation is
a busy, exciting time, and the next step in
your expat experience.
Kathy Davies spent
her time in QD actively
involved in language
lessons, community
events and was a member of the
social activities committee. Kathy
and her husband Jeff enjoyed traveling
in China and other parts of Asia.
QD was their second international
Three Expat Women tour
Rita Nielsen
Tai Tai Tales of Travel by
S
pring was near and The Tai Tai’s (alias: Julie,
Diane & Rita) were restless. An appetite for adventure
was calling three Qingdao women to the Silk
Road. One might recall Silk Road was known as
“Friendship Canal”. And possibly the meaning was not
only about the trade between the West and the East, but
also interpersonal relationships within one expat tour bus.
My skepticism of traveling with a large group changed
forever.
Twenty-nine international strangers, and a guide provided
by China culture center, eventually find themselves in the
Gobi Desert. (Geologists and ecologists call the Western
Gobi the Tarim Basin and TaklamakanDesert.) We entered
each town, village, cave, mountain, sand dune via Dunhuang
camel, bus, overnight train, airplane, and/or with a
headlamp. Our entire trip was fueled by laughter (another
natural resource indigenous to the area). My only previous
knowledge of this journey was that a Venetian merchant
named Marco Polo and his family were going to be
responsible for my next lesson in Chinese History— silk
carpets and cashmere!
One of the best days of the trip started in Gansu Province
with breakfast on the rooftop of our quasi-sandcastle hotel
in the Gobi Desert. The Dunhuang Silk Road Hotel was
an epic setting for the days that would lie ahead!
The camel ride toward Crescent Moon Lake on “the Rumbling
Sands” of Marco Polo, and the climb to the top of the
dunes was not for weak knees or the faint hearted! The
panorama of Dunhuang stretched out as if it were a Han
dragon pensively watching us in the Hexi Corridor. Waiting
quietly for one or all of us to slide down. (The Hexi Corridor
is a long narrow passage stretching from Lanzhou to
the Jade Pass, or Yumen Gate, also known as Northern
Silk Road in Gansu Province.)
That afternoon, at Mogao Grottos, we toured approximately
10 of the 492 caves housing a total of 45,000
murals, Buddhist paintings and 2,000 terra-cotta statues.
The caves were unlit and better seen by flashlight. No
cameras were allowed. But, what was waiting for us outside
was every photo journalists dream. We were in the
middle of a sand storm! A surreal walk to the bus and the
3.5 hour drive to catch the overnight train to Turpan was
as unnerving as any Nor’easter I had experienced.
In Turpan and Urumqi, Uyghur, Turkic culture and Islamic
religion become more visual. The integration of several
nationalities became apparent in the Xinjiang Uyghur
Autonomous Region. Language, geography and ecology
rapidly change as we continued to move west through the
desert to the mountains and back again.
16 QINGDAO EXPAT MAGAZINE

Xinjiang Province & Silk Road
The faces of each village and market we traveled through completely transformed from Han to Uyghur. A side trip to
Lake Karakuri and Snow Mountain introduced us to Kazaks, Tajiks as well as Tibetans. The only Han we saw were
tourists. In Kashgar’s Peoples Square, stands a 24 meter high commanding statue of Chairman Mao. Adorned in
neon lights he watches the Muslim and Islamic community like the dragon dunes of Dunhuang.
We strolled down dirt road villages waiting for horse and buggy traffic, accepting samples of mulberries, bread and
smiles. Homes morphed into businesses and were open for early afternoon trade. Uyghur locals invited us for a
lamb kebab, moonlit dinner, music and dancing.
Our last day in Kashgar found some of us still in search of a quality product and middle man. A bargain price we
could rectify. We hurriedly searched an animal market, silk carpet factory, the Sunday bazaar and the old city
shops. Still silk carpets and authentic pashminas were not the deal we had hoped for. The trade deals of Marco
Polo are now clearly history. A wooden bread bowl, sitar, cattle bells, dried fruits and spices were not only the perfect
consolation, but all that were meant to be. For we are now the three wiser tai tais.
For more information on the Silk Road or to book a similar tour visit: http://www.chinaculturecenter.org/
Tai Tai Travel Tips:
• Overnight train information: Soft sleeper—four berth with curtain or
Hard sleeper — 6 berth no curtain. Request in advance.
• Bring a flash light or head lamp for viewing the caves and overnight train.
• Bring a traveling game of Mahjong or Scrabble.
• Remember a scarf or hat for mosques and some of the small Islamic villages.
• Don’t forget your hat and boots for your camel rides and dune walk.
Why Sail?
Sailing builds friendships. One Sunday in May, I had the pleasure of talking with
the two gentlemen in the photo (right). There wasn’t any wind that day, so I went to
the Olympic Sailing Center just to look around. I found myself sitting down, feet in
the water, engaged in interesting conversation, all while watching the sailing children
from YCIS do their training that day - capsizing their boat and getting it back
up (below left). Such an afternoon reminded me of one of the most important reasons
why I sail - to spend time with friends and meet new people. Sailing is great fun on
and off the water!
in Qingdao by Jeppe Mortensen
Sailing
It’s a sport you can pursue your whole life. There are thousands of different boats,
so you’ll always be able to find a suitable one for your age and capability. If you get
tired of sailing one type of boat, you can always move to another - smaller, bigger,
faster, or whatever. And sailing can be enjoyed either alone or with others.
Sailing is a great family activity. Sailing is fun for all ages and one’s physical fitness is seldom an obstacle to getting
out. Sailing gives you quality time with your family - bringing young and old together, while providing enjoyment for
everyone. If you fall in love
with sailing, it’s for life. Sometimes it looks like my two-year old daughter is already in love (below middle).
Below are people to contact with any questions regarding how to get started sailing:
Charity Chat
Qingdao Expat Charity by Carla Vassmer
The QEC replaced the roof of this building to
make it usable again.
The original toilet @ Laixi Lijia School.
The QEC recently financed its replacement.
Laixi Lijia
Primary School
M
embers of the Qingdao
Expat Charity (QEC) recently
took a daytrip to Laixi and
Pingdu to visit the students
QEC sponsors. These visits, to rural schools
outside of Qingdao, offer a better understanding
of how most of the Chinese really
live.
Our first stop was the Laixi Lijia Primary
School which has Grades 1-5, 29 teachers
and nine classrooms. This is the school
that is most in need of assistance. They are
so happy to see us and always offering us
seasonal fruits, delicious peanuts and water.
The principal then sends us away with
boxes of fruit. (Which proved helpful this
trip as we were so busy meeting with
teachers and students, we had no time for
lunch— we ate these gifts while we drove
from to other schools!)
We were happy to see a previously unused
school building, now occupied with offices,
a table tennis room and classroom after
our financing of the roof repair. We met
with two girls the QEC assists. These girls
seem more comfortable with us the more
we see them. The principal asked the QEC
to consider financing a new toilet structure
for the students. We expressed the need
to clean the toilet building everyday. They
assured us they are designing it to make
this easy to do. We went into a classroom
full of old computers. The students were
working on their lessons. There were many
computers not functioning and some were
in different stages of repair.
The Qingdao Expat Charity thanks the
Qingdao community for their continued
support. You are assisting and encouraging
young students to further their education.
These students are most appreciative.
The QEC will meet next on Monday, August
24 @ SPR Whitehouse 2F. We welcome you
to join with us in our Mission to assist needy
Qingdao area children.
QEM Events page
Organized by Peety Li - University graduate
Chinese Paper Cutting - 剪 纸 , jiǎn zhǐ
Chinese Cooking - Chinese Holiday specialties
Laoshan Farm Specialty Dishes
The Summer Dance, held May 30, 2009, saw many expats gather at the Wildfire Restaurant, inside the
Intercontinental Hotel. We dined both inside and out, with spectacular views of the new Olympic Marina
and the lights of the Qingdao skyline. Delicious food around several stations, drinks and the live band
brought many to the dance floor. It felt like we were transported off to a seaside summer resort on the
Mediterranean.
Both the Qingdao Expat Group and the Qingdao Expat Charity give a Special Thank You to …
The Intercontinental Hotel for hosting, providing door prizes and donating a Room Night for the Silent
Auction.
The Wildfire Restaurant and its summery venue, beautiful views and delicious food.
Steven Gao’s (Lennon Bar) band Plug and Play for entertaining us.
Kiley Ariail for donating a Gogovivi bag for the Silent Auction.
We all enjoyed this evening together with all proceeds being donated to the Qingdao Expat Charity.
Did U Know . . .
Those plastic
discount cards are
worth something?
After living in QD for a while, you may
notice your wallet growing fuller,
though not necessarily with yuan
notes!
It seems every place from restaurants
to supermarkets in this city offer a
discount card.
But just how do they work? How do
you accumulate points? And how do
you redeem the points you’ve accumulated?
This month’s Did U know offers an
explanation of the points cards from
Hisense and JUSCO, two of the many
businesses expats frequent.
Thanks to Carla V., Julie E., Petty L.
and Jen J. for their contributions!
You can submit
info that’s
helpful to
expats?
Hisense VIP Plaza Club Card
Spend to Earn
In all shops B to 3F (except Starbucks & restaurants)
spend 100 rmb to earn 1 point
In the Basement Supermarket
spend 200 rmb to earn 1 point
1 point = 1 yuan
Redemption
Redeem your points on member Weekends, every 3rd weekend of
the month. This is the only time you can redeem your points: At
the 3F office, there are items on display, to choose from. Or, at
any Hisense shop/supermarket. The cashier should ask you if you
want to use your points, you will receive the discount on your purchase.
Extra Benefits
VIP card members receive a 10% discount in the stores (but not in
the supermarket). If you do a lot of shopping in the shops, you
may become a gold or diamond card member, which has higher
discounts and also closer parking places.
Expiration
Points accumulate for one calendar year - Jan 1 to Dec 31,
2009. Beginning the next Jan 1, 2010 - your points are gone,
start at zero.
JUSCO Point Card
Application
Fill out the form @ the Customer Service Center, and bring along
