Police and Crime Commissioners: Accountable for Cumbria from November Police and Crime Commissioners will be powerful new individuals who will hold the police force and the Chief Constable to account. They will decide how the policing part of the council tax is allocated and will consult the public and victims of crime on issues of community safety. They will also monitor how the police deal with public complaints and if you do not think they are listening to public concerns, you can vote them out and elect somebody who will. Who can stand for election as Police and Crime Commissioner for Cumbria These are important roles which it is hoped will attract high calibre candidates with a public service ethos. You do not need to be a politician to stand for election – anyone can stand as long as they are: 18 or over; British, Commonwealth or European Union citizens; and resident in Cumbria. Public servants, such as civil servants and police officers, cannot stand, neither can those convicted of an imprisonable offence.
