Pulp Summer Festival Shows
Lighting designer Rob Sinclair is using a Jands Vista system,
running the new Vista v2 software, for the highly acclaimed
Pulp reunion tour, which sees the darlings of Britpop return
in their glorious original “Different Class” line up from 1995.
So far, the European leg of the tour
has seen the band play a string of
high profile festival slots including the
Isle of Wight Festival and headlining
Sunday at the Wireless Festival in Hyde
Park, London – with UK summer dates
including T in The Park and Reading
/ Leeds Festival – as well as a host of
other European dates.
Pulp have always retained an art-house
cult following, but there’s been an
incredible reaction and real buzz about
the band’s reunion. The shows are all
packed and it’s become a “must see”
event as fans old and new clamour to
enjoy their stylish poppy mix of everyday
life, art, dreams, subversion and phobias.
Lighting designer Rob Sinclair is a
long term fan of the Vista platform. He
purchased his first Vista S1 control surface
in 2008 shortly after the model’s launch,
and now owns three identical systems –
comprising of a laptop running the Vista
software, with a Vista S1 and two Vista M1
wings – to service his own shows.
Currently the other two are busy
touring the US with chart topping
Adele (operated by Jon Barker) and the
legendary Peter Gabriel (operated by
Steve Kellaway).
“It’s a leap forwards. Jands has
done a great job and with Vista v2
they have a strong basis for plenty
of long term development. It’s
powerful, flexible, highly practical
and enables me to create the
moods and feel that I want onstage
- which is what is most important
to me.”
European leg of the
Yusuf Islam (formerly
known as Cat
Stevens) world tour,
finding it the perfect
opportunity to try out
the new Jands Vista
v2 software running
on his own Vista S3
lighting console.
Yusuf Islam World Tour
Regarded as one of the world’s greatest
singer-songwriters, this tour marked
Yusuf’s high profile return to performing
in Europe for the first time in 36 years.
“Vista v2 has definitely taken the platform
to another level,” enthused Derek, who is
impressed with the new software’s power
and simplicity.
The tour rig featured Martin
Professional MAC 700 Profile moving
lights in the roof and MAC 2K and 250
Washes on the floor.
Derek invested in his Vista S3 desk for
a Cliff Richard & The Shadows tour
about 18 months ago and it hasn’t
stopped working since.
He added “v2 makes it so fast to get a
show up and running. It’s so quick to
create your cues, yet allows you the power
to control the details.”
A Catalyst media server was also
triggered from the Vista S3, which fed
content to a 60ft wide by 30ft high
projection surface upstage. The original
show design was by Marc Brickman.
Equipment for the European leg of the
tour was supplied by leading UK rental
company, Lite Alternative.
Recommended to Derek by other
lighting design colleagues, he
admits to “Falling In love” with the
Vista console after finally taking the
plunge to look at it, adding “There’s
absolutely no going back now.”
Alford Media
After using the recently released Vista v2 software on their existing Vista T2 consoles,
Dallas, Texas based Alford Media have just committed to increasing their inventory after
the next generation of software delivered the leap forward it promised.
One of two full time lighting designer/
directors, Kurt Wunsch has been with
the company for 10 years. He was an
early adopter of the Jands Vista control
platform, and has been an enthusiastic
user since. Their first T2 console was
bought soon after Vista was launched,
and along with the others they have
bought since, is still going strong even
after constant use. Last year one of
his highlights was lighting the Boy
Scouts of America’s 100th Anniversary
National Scout Jamboree show - 16
universes of DMX controlled from a
single Vista T2.
Kurt and his colleagues took the
decision that now was the right
time to update their consoles to the
next generation Vista v2 software,
and get access to all the additional
functionality that it offers.
Kurt is very impressed with Vista
v2, particularly the way it interfaces
seamlessly with media servers. As
Alford Media is a video orientated
company, this is proving extremely
useful to get the most from their recent
investment in several Green Hippo
Hippotizer products.
Kurt likes many features of the Vista v2
operating system, specifically the
user-friendly programming
environment, and they way it allows you
to “work in a logical, straightforward
and creative manner” to build your
show. He says “you can really focus
on the design, and think in terms of
colors and effects rather than numbercrunching
and percentages. It’s fast,
interactive and simple to use” he
comments, adding that it also suits
the theatrical/rock ‘n’ roll style of his
programming which was shaped during
his early career.
Kurt believes Vista v2 is now “faster
than any other console - the interface
makes it so easy to grab fixtures and
apply parameters”. This allows him and
his team to deliver the high standards
that his clients demand within the tight
timeframes they set.
On a recent Quake Con event in Dallas,
Kurt was using Chroma-Q TM Color Block TM
LED fixtures to highlight the trusses, which
he was easily able to “pixel map” using the
matrix facility in Vista v2. He says that it
worked “Brilliantly”, saving literally hours of
programming time, and quickly giving the
client exactly what they were looking for.
With Vista v2 now installed and proved
completely reliable on all their desks,
he’s starting to train some of Alford
Media’s other operators. Apart from really
appreciating it, they “are all picking it up
incredibly fast”. He recalls a recent trade
show in Dallas. He unexpectedly had to
go and deal with something elsewhere
in the building, so to ensure no valuable
programming time was lost, gave freelance
LD Teresa Porterfield - who had never seen
a Vista T2 before – a quick basic training
course! “It was amazing! She ‘got it’ so
quickly, so well and enjoyed the process so
much that she ended up programming and
running the whole show!”
11

A Jands Vista T2 lighting console running the new Vista v2
software was used to control all the moving, conventional
and LED lighting on the main stage at the 31st Vienne Jazz
Festival in France.
The eclectic line up featured highprofile
international touring stars
including Jamie Cullum, Bootsy Collins,
Sonny Rollins, Al Jarreau, Chick Corea,
Herbie Hancock, the Brooklyn Funk
Essentials and many more.
31st Vienne Jazz Festival
The lighting equipment was supplied
by Lyon based rental company GL
Events. The main stage production
lighting design was created by
Christophe Paillet and Matthieu
Aufort, with Christophe acting as the
main programmer and operator.
With the stellar musical line up, the
pressure of daily live TV broadcasts
from the festival, and many season
ticket holders attending multiple
shows, the lighting design had to be
versatile and variable enough for each
artist to have a distinctive look and
feel to their set.
It was the first time that GL Events
had used the Jands Vista platform,
having only recently taken delivery of
six new consoles from Jands’ French
distributor - Montpelier-based ESL.
After a little training, they were
confident that the time was right to
use the speed and flexibility of the
Jands Vista v2 software on this high
profile event.
Christophe says, “Each day Vista v2
helped us in our creative process. The
effects in particular that are available
with Vista enabled us to effectively have
a ‘new’ lighting rig each day.” He adds
that even after two weeks of solid reprogramming,
he and his team were not
running out of either ideas or options,
and the Vista kept delivering precisely
what they were looking for.
Christophe really enjoyed working on
the Vista consoles and comments, “The
v2 software really gives the Vista range
the potential to become one of the
most specified and successful consoles,
especially if Jands keeps developing its
software along this same trajectory. It is
so quick and easy to programme.”
13
Interface
Vista’s simple, flexible and incredibly intuitive
interface gives the freedom to create visually,
getting the most from today’s mix of dimmers,
moving lights, LEDs and media.
“It’s flexible, powerful, easy to use and gives
plenty of scope for creativity, so I know I
can put a show together accurately, quickly
and efficiently”
Lighting designer Ronny Starheim
“Vista v2 has definitely taken the platform to another
It’s so quick to create your cues, yet allows you the power
on the latest developments in lighting
consoles in order to purchase something
that fits my idea of what a lighting desk
should be. Having seen the first demo of
the Vista v2 operating system at PALME
2010, it had piqued my interest till it hit
the sweet spot in 2011.
The system allows a designer and a
programmer to dictate terms to the
programming aspect and to decide how
simple or powerful it should be. I would
say the new Jands Vista is one of the
finest, most intelligent lighting desks
the industry has seen.”
Lighthouse Productions created the
design for the BURDA event held on
15th February at the Sheikh Zayed
Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. Using the
mosque as backdrop to the main stage
Lighthouse used a Watchout system to
project the images onto the entrance of
the mosque, while the Jands was used
for all the lighting cues.
The Jands Vista desk was
preprogrammed using WYSIWYG and
the result was a great success. The
Jands console worked smoothly through
the entire event and made the cueing
a piece of cake as the pre-programmed
states were spot on in rehearsals.
Westover Church in North Carolina, USA recently upgraded its Jands Vista T4
console to the new Vista v2 software, providing even greater lighting control
for its busy 3,000 capacity main auditorium.
Westover Church
Part of the non-denominational
Church’s 300,000 square foot facility,
the main auditorium hosts a diverse
range of events. In addition to regular
congregation services and at least two
major events per month, the Church
hosts its own internal events and
concerts featuring a choir, worship
band and orchestra. The auditorium is
also home to the Greensboro Symphony
Pops Orchestra.
The Jands Vista T4 console was
specified and purchased six years ago
for Westover Church by production
director Jeff Neubauer, and supplied by
Barbizon Lighting via exclusive North
American distributor, A.C. Lighting Inc.
Jeff was an early adopter of the Jands
Vista and all the power and flexibility
this brings to his events. Since then,
Jeff has not looked back in terms of
lighting control – he simply loves the Vista!
The Church also has two Vista PC systems
– used as a backup to the Vista T4 and
for running timed lighting events in the
Church’s atrium area. Says Jeff, “Vista
v2 has been an amazing upgrade. It’s
added a lot of new functionality and made
programming even easier and quicker.”
The ability to add external touch screens
is “fabulous” he comments – and
immediately made the most of it.
Jeff does the majority of the show
programming himself, working with a team
of regular operators, and so has plenty of
hands on experience and knowledge of
exactly what is needed.
“I can organise myself better, and
customise icons to precisely match
the way I work.
I like to be able to jump around
the Cue Lists and the way that the
Timeline works now, along with
other aspects, it is all even more
convenient with v2” he enthuses.
- Jeff Neubauer
He also thinks the fact that he could
upgrade his existing console to get
even more value from his investment,
and allow him all the latest
programming tools is very cool.
A Jands Vista I3 console, running the next generation Vista v2 software, was
specified by renowned installation artist and lighting designer Fred Pommerehn
to control the lighting for a specially commissioned work on display as part of
the World Wildlife Fund’s “Deutschland wird Wald Meister 2011” (Year of the
Forest) campaign in Berlin, Germany.
WWF’s Year of the Forest
The temporary installation – which was in
place on the steps of the famous Konzerthaus
in Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt square – featured
26 fabulous tree sculptures measuring up
to six metres in height, each carefully
crafted by Fred using recycled cardboard
materials, and diligently lit for the
darkness hours.
Fred’s inventive set design, sculptural
and installation work embraces many
disciplines and frequently involves lighting
as an integral element. For the WWF
event, Lichtblick Bühnentechnik supplied
all the technical production – and also
constructed the trees, project managed by
Frederik Wehlmann.
Fred Pommerehn has worked with the
Berlin based lighting rental company,
Lichtblick Bühnentechnik GmbH for
several years and always specifies Jands
Vista to control any lighting on his
projects. He explains that there are many
reasons for this, including the flexibility of
the system and the speed at which he can
achieve his aims, as he is often working
on projects where the timeframe is a
significant factor.
It was the first event on which Lichtblick
Bühnentechnik had used the I3 running
on the Vista v2 software.
“Using the Jands Vista allowed us to work
very fast. Especially running with Vista v2.
It really takes the complexity out of the
process, and allows you to concentrate on
getting creative visual results fast.”
The State University of
New York at Geneseo
has purchased a Jands
Vista T2 full size
console for its School
of the Arts faculty,
which provides
degree courses in
stage lighting design,
technical theatre and
stagecraft.
SUNY Geneseo Theatre
Located in the historic village of
Geneseo, the University is a premier
public liberal arts college with a rich
tradition of academic excellence. The
campus facilities include a state-of-theart
theatre used for practical lessons
and assessments, as well as an array of
faculty-directed and student-directed
productions, community-produced
shows, dance concerts and musical
theatre revues.
With a focus on teaching students
to use the very latest industry
technologies, Johnnie Ferrell, associate
professor of theatre and technical
director at the School of the Arts,
decided it was time to upgrade their
lighting console to something more
modern, powerful and capable of
handing the increasing number of
intelligent fixtures.
After evaluating several popular
industry consoles, Johnnie was
impressed by the Jands Vista so
arranged a demonstration for himself
and his students at the University.
The Vista’s modern, graphic interface,
pen-tablet control and ease of use
made a big impression on Johnnie and
the students, so he purchased a full
size T2 console for the University’s
theatre via local company, BMI Supply
in Queensbury, New York.
Johnnie commented: “I have never had
a lighting desk that is so easy to use.
You can set cues faster and easier than
anything I have ever used. The patch is
always a snap as well.”
The console is primarily being used
in the University’s 386-seater Alice
Austin Theatre to control a lighting rig
which includes various Altman, ETC,
Elation and Vari-Lite intelligent and
conventional fixtures.
Student productions programmed
on the Vista include The Game of
Love and Chance and Joseph and the
Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, as
well as dance concerts every semester.
In addition to using the console on-site, the
students also frequently edit their shows
away from the campus using the free PC
and native Mac-based Vista offline editor
software.
Summarizing his experience of the Vista,
Johnnie commented: “As my mentor stated
about the Vista: did I want a lighting
console that students could learn to
program, or did I want a console that the
students could light with The students love
the Vista and it has quickly become their
console of choice.”
One of the most popular events at this year’s Vivid
Festival was FireDance, an incredible performance of
dancing flames choreographed to music, the likes of
which hasn’t been seen in Australia before.
Sydney’s Vivid Festival
Using forty jets of flame that rose
higher than a three-story house,
FireDance exploded several times
a night, at Campbells Cove, in
Sydney’s historic Rocks district.
FireDance featured two different
shows, that alternated with each
other on each night of Vivid
Sydney. One show used pop music
with the firejet flames dancing
to the Katie Perry hit Firework,
remixed by renowned artist Peewee
Ferris, while the other show saw
them in a choreographed balletic
performance to the magic of
Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.
FireDance was created and produced by Howard & Sons Pyrotechnics, a fourth
generation family business and leading exponents of flame-projector technology.
FireDance uses a pressurised non-toxic hydrocarbon liquid in its FireJets, and its
poetry and warmth could be felt tens of metres away.
Howard & Sons trialled a new method of flame delivery; ripping the optics out of
some inexpensive moving head fixtures and mounting their flame heads in them!
“It was pretty challenging but now we’ve proved it can work we will probably do it
with a better quality moving head,” explained Stuart Bensley, designer and project
manager of Fire Dance. “The Jands Vista was controlling all the flame heads
and moving heads; about 160 channels of DMX to control 38 Flame heads and
4 moving head fixtures. We had a Vista S1 connected to an iMac and also a full
redundancy system so we could swap over if needed.”
Stuart further explains that timing is extremely intricate with the FireJets and that an on
and off command 15/100th of a second apart produces a completely different effect.
British Grand Prix Ball
A Vista S1,
software, provided
lighting control
of a spectacular
architectural
lighting system for
the Clubhouse of
the British Racing
Drivers’ Club (BRDC)
at Silverstone racing
circuit for their
annual British Grand
Prix Ball event.
The BRDC Ball is a legendary event. Held
in a luxury marquee erected adjacent to
the Members’ Clubhouse on the Saturday
evening of the Formula 1 Santander
British Grand Prix weekend, it has always
attracted the crème of the membership,
including leading GP drivers and
motorsport stars past and present.
A.C. Entertainment Technologies Ltd
(AC-ET), Jands exclusive UK dealer and a
Patron of the British Racing Drivers’ Club’s
Rising Stars Programme, worked closely
with the BRDC events team to deliver the
temporary lighting installation.
The overall brief was to transform the
three-storey Clubhouse – which is situated
in a prime viewing position beside the
racetrack – into a dynamic, visually
impressive space for the event, bringing
a new dimension and ambience to its
multiple levels.
In such a prestige setting, and with
everyone expecting a spectacular
result, lighting designer (and AC-ET’s
Northern technical sales manager)
James Bawn knew that he needed
a control system that would let him
achieve the results he was looking for
both quickly and accurately. Having
worked with the Jands Vista system,
and next generation Vista v2 software
in his day job, he had the confidence
to know that this would provide the
perfect solution.
With space at a premium, and wanting
to be able to move around easily,
James chose to use the portable Jands
Vista S1 control surface which was
connected to a laptop running the Vista
v2 software.
James Bawn commented “The Vista
helped me enormously as time was
extremely tight! The new Vista v2
software is simply excellent.”
