than
a race
Welcome
We are grateful for the outpouring of support each September as more than 40,000 participants gather at
Tom McCall Waterfront Park for the Komen Portland Race for the Cure. But Susan G. Komen is more than
a Race. Each year Komen impacts our community and the ever-changing world of breast cancer research by
being a leader. We want to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all of our donors, volunteers and
partners and collaborators, who join us in our vision of a world without breast cancer.
Dear Friends,
Thank you for your generous contributions to the Oregon and SW Washington
Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure ® . We appreciate your partnership in our
promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring
quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.
Welcome
Since 1982, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has been leading the battle against breast
cancer on every front. Our national research grants have pioneered the development
of drugs credited with delaying tumor growth and preventing recurrences in millions
of breast cancer survivors.
In Oregon and SW Washington, we help
provide free or low-cost mammography
screenings. We reach out through our
volunteers and community partners all
across our local area with life-saving
information and caring support. Your
fundraising dollars support Komen
partnerships throughout Oregon and SW
Washington to ensure that all women,
despite geographic, cultural and financial
barriers, have access to breast health
services. Since Oregon and Washington
consistently have some of the highest
incidence of breast cancer in the country,
your support is even more critical.
Although last year we were able to help
provide 6,000 uninsured women with mammograms,
another 51,000 local women eligible for these services were not screened.
Many organizations raise money for breast cancer. At Susan G. Komen for the Cure,
breast cancer is our only focus and we make every penny count. Our responsible
stewardship of funds earned a Charity Navigator four-star rating again in 2010, the
highest possible award given by this leader in non-profit evaluation.
Again, thank you for joining us in our vision of a world without breast cancer. With
your help and that of other caring individuals and organizations, we are truly saving
lives in our community.
With gratitude,
Our Mission in Action
The Komen Oregon & SW Washington Affiliate creates tremendous impact by
focusing efforts in areas vital to our mission:
SAVING LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION AND AWARENESS
Breast Cancer Issues Conference – This extensive, daylong
educational conference provides the most up-to-date
and science-based information on wellness, diagnosis
and treatment, survivor issues and breast cancer research
advances. The 2010 conference included sessions on risk
reduction, integrative approaches to breast health, breast
cancer detection, red flags for recurrence, radiation and
chemotherapy options and strategies for successful coping.
This year we also added a second conference specifically for
healthcare providers, which took place the Friday before the
general conference. Continuing Medical Education Credits
were offered and nearly 50 local physicians attended.
Attendees of Komen’s annual Breast
Cancer Issues Conference take part
in a session to learn about healthy
lifestyle choices that reduce one’s
risk of developing breast cancer.
Speaker’s Bureau – This comprehensive program of
educational outreach provides presentations to groups and corporations, health fairs, and the
medically underserved, reaching nearly 15,500 people with the latest information on breast
health. Our free speaker training for those in health education, called “Komen Essentials,”
provides front-line educators and advocates with the tools they need to share information
about risk reduction and carry the life-saving message of early detection.
Extending Our Reach through Community Partners
Community Grants – Throughout Oregon and SW Washington, we annually award grants of
up to $40,000 for programs that include breast health education, outreach and support for
breast cancer treatment and survivorship. Since 2002, our local Affiliate has granted nearly
$5.4 million for life-saving programs across our entire service area.
Rural Transportation Grants – Access to breast health services is a critical need throughout
Oregon, particularly for low-income and uninsured women. These grants provide transportation,
lodging and food assistance for diagnostic appointments and breast cancer treatment.
Mini-Grants – These are grants of up to $2,000 offered quarterly to any special project or
event for breast health education and outreach or for one-time costs associated with a limited
breast health activity. This year, the grant program has funded a survivor tea and fashion
show, a Casting for Recovery day, comfort bags for chemotherapy patients, an African-
American breast cancer survivor support group and a weekend retreat for women with breast
cancer, among other activities across our service area.
The oregon and SW Washington affiliate of susan g. komen for the cure ®
Saving More Lives through Legislative Action
We promote strategic public health policies and funding for breast cancer issues. Through our
grassroots network of breast health advocates we inform and encourage state legislators to
support bills expanding early detection, treatment and clinical trials for men and women in
Oregon and SW Washington.
Making an impact
Giving the Gift of Time and Talent
Our volunteers work thousands of hours to keep operating costs low so our financial resources can
be directed to realizing our promise. We have a committed volunteer Board of Directors, community
leaders who dedicate hundreds of hours to our Affiliate governance. Over 1,000 volunteers give their
time each year to the Susan G. Komen Portland Race for the Cure ® and many skilled volunteers assist
daily with community programs, events, advocacy and administrative work.
Energizing Our Mission
Individual Giving –Whether small or large donations Breast Cancer Awareness Month, year-end
appeal or memorial giving, charitable bequests or the Circle of Giving, we are proud of the tens of
thousands who support us in our critical work. We are conscious of the enormous responsibility to
be good stewards of these funds.
Komen Portland Race for the Cure ® – Since the first year
in 1992, our signature awareness and fundraising event has
grown to an average of 40,000 walkers, runners, survivors
and volunteers and consistently raises more than $2 million
annually. It has truly become a community-wide tradition.
Partners in the Promise – This corporate initiative enables
companies to invest in the vision and programs of the
Affiliate and gain broad, year-round recognition for their
contribution to the community.
Lunch for the Cure ® – In order to better understand our
mission and increase awareness, we host a fundraising
luncheon to empower donors to make a difference in the
lives of those we serve.
Komen Oregon’s Survivor Programs
Manager, Toni Mountain, with 2009
Lunch for the Cure keynote speaker,
The need to expand our mission
Although we are able to help 6,000 uninsured women this year with mammograms,
an additional 51,000 local women are eligible for these services and will not be
screened. We can and must do more to increase our reach and provide life-saving
breast cancer screening to the women of Oregon and SW Washington.
Needs Assessment
The Community Profile is a local assessment to identify gaps in
services, improve breast health and determine populations most
in need of services. Background information for the Community
Profile Report is gathered via questionnaire, focus groups, key
informant interviews and demographic data. All of the data are
analyzed, gaps identified and priorities established. Our Board
of Directors and various Komen programs use Community Profile
findings to select grantees, develop new programs and focus
First Annual Eugene Race for the Cure
On 10-10-10, the Oregon and SW Washington Affiliate
celebrated the addition of a second Race for the Cure event
in Eugene, Oregon, with nearly 7,000 participants despite the
pouring rain. The long standing tradition and success of the
19th annual Portland Race for the Cure secured a decision from
Komen National to authorize a second Race for the Cure event.
The Oregon and SW Washington Affiliate is proud to be the first
Affiliate in the nation to be given permission to host two Races.
2011 will mark the 20th Anniversary of the Oregon and
SW Washington Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Anniversaries, especially milestone anniversaries, create a space
to reflect on the past and to envision the future. With the support
of our donors and partners, we celebrate the progress and
difference we’ve made over the past 20 years. We’ve learned that
early detection saves lives, and continue to fight for screening,
education, and access to quality health care for women in every
corner of our service area.
Gain knowledge. Find support. Feel empowered.
As your trusted local resource, we are here through the fear of a potential diagnosis to a life well lived
with breast cancer. It’s our privilege to support survivors by providing resources, offering our annual
Breast Cancer Issues Conference, and empowering women to be their own healthcare advocates. Funding
research is core to our promise to end breast cancer forever. Whether you know us best from Race for the
Cure, through calling our office in search of support or resources, volunteering for an event or seeing us at
a local health fair event—we are here for you.
We believe every woman deserves the promise of a full life, and until we live in a world where no one fears
a diagnosis of breast cancer, we will continue to fight the best way we know how—together. Thank you for
being a part of our promise.
Our daily work to end breast cancer forever is personal.
So is our gratitude. Thank you.
