VOLUNTEER PROGRAMSVolunteer Spotlight - Cynthia Grant, President, Golf ScoreCards, Inc.Photo by Laura O’BrienAs a 7 year survivor, Cynthia Grant had a passion for the Komen Foundation’s mission. An old friend, ourpast Board President, Tina Foster, recruited Cynthia to be on the Board of Directors. For 3 years, she has alsoserved on the Grants Committee, and most recently has chaired the Screening Committee.Cynthia’s objective was simple; she wanted to make sure Komen dollars went as far as they could to enablemore women to receive mammograms. To do this she meets with the State regularly to ensure that ourcontracts provide the best possible delivery of breast health to the community. Cynthia puts her strongbusiness, sales and marketing background to good use!Cynthia estimates that she contributes about 20 hours a month to the Komen Foundation. According to Gail Brownmiller,Education Program Manager “Cynthia’s commitment to our mission goes above and beyond what we normally see inKomen’s outstanding volunteers.” She also works full time with her husband in a company that prints golf scorecards. When asked what her favorite part about working with Komen is, she stated “the commitment, time and effort of everyoneinvolved are very inspirational.” The Komen Foundation is fortunate to be able to work with such an exceptional volunteer.Volunteer OpportunitiesThe Oregon/SW Washington Affiliate of the Susan G. While this workis indeed going on again this spring, Champions have alsobeen busy monitoring Oregon legislation. In the early 90’s, legislation was passed with the hard workof many partners working to improve the use of mammographyin the state of Oregon. It required health insurancecompanies in Oregon to include coverage for mammography, informally known as “mandated mammographylegislation”. The legislation regulating this coverage has sofar included a sunset clause, meaning the legislativerequirement goes away every 4 years without additionallegislation.Happily, Representatives Jane Rosenbaum and CarolynTomei have supported new legislation through a groupthey have organized and supported for several sessions –The Women’s Health and Wellness Alliance. This AllianceBy Ann Blakerhas an agenda of 12 bills this session, 2 of which are key tobreast health. House Bill 2497, unanimously passed theHouse in early March. It requires insurance companies tocover mammograms according to guidelines establishedthrough national health organizations, and this bill iswritten without a sunset clause. House Bill 2498 alsopassed unanimously and would require insurance companiesto cover clinical breast exams apart from other servicesoffered as part of a woman’s check up by her healthprovider. This bill is also without a sunset clause. Thesebills await hearing on the Senate side, which should takeplace in early April. Those of you who are signed up to be an eChampion, watch your email for notice of opportunities in early Aprilto encourage our Senators to support these initiatives. Those of you who are not yet signed up to be an eChampionand would like to be, email a.blaker@comcast.net. Youwill receive our local and national communications aboutpolicy issues which come out about every two weeks, unless of course there is a burning issue that requires a callto action.Spring & Summer 2005 7
