WINE APPRECIATION DINNER
With Gordon Ritchie of TerraVin Wines
THURSDAY 11 APRIL 2013
At the heart of TerraVin is a dedication to making world class
Marlborough wines from superbly situated hillside vineyards. It was
recently described as ‘one of New Zealand’s most exciting emerging stars’.
In 2010 following a few exhilarating years as senior winemaker at a state-of-the-art contract winery in
Marlborough, Gordon Ritchie was ready to return to the kind of hands-on winemaking role he had
previously enjoyed at Seresin. The lure of hand-tended, hillside grown fruit and small parcel winemaking
for a Pinot Noir specialist drew Gordon to TerraVin in September of that year, ahead of the 2011 vintage.
Under the watchful eye of viticulturist Mike Eaton, TerraVin draws fruit from three north-facing slopes
dotted across the revered Southern Valleys of Marlborough. These hillside vineyards are afforded their true
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
I trust all (in NZ) are
enjoying summer this
year, extending right
through Easter.
Of note last month were:
• The very warm feelings toward Juergen and
Jane at the celebration of their 20 and 30 years’
service to the Club. Many Members took the
opportunity to express their appreciation and
all enjoyed a jovial evening.
• The very first Family Night was held on Friday
15th and 7 children from two to teenage years
enjoyed a video and fish and chips while their
parents socialised with friends in Drake’s Acre with
drinks and a light meal. All enjoyed the evening,
including those without children attending
... a tribute to good parenting and helpful staff.
• The well attended last Friday drinks and supper
Upcoming functions feature:
• A Wine Evening with TerraVin. This is a night
for real wine buffs as I understand; it is top
quality NZ wine with a price to match.
• A casual breakfast watching the US Masters
with your golfing Club friends. The 6th floor
venue may suit those of you in town that day.
• An Opera concert with Julia Moss-Pearson for
those of you reading this on-line. (If you are
reading hard copy, the concert would have taken
place by now).
The last point leads me to note that newsletters
and statements will be sent electronically to those
who have requested it from this month. As usual
there may be some teething issues, but please
update your email address on the Club website
if necessary, and give any useful feedback in due
course to the Secretary Manager.
In conclusion I wish to advise Members that the
Club has received a generous bequest from the
estate of the late Richard Peacock. I have written
to his daughters Anna Weir and Brigit Pollock
on your behalf expressing the Club’s appreciation.
In due course the Committee will discuss with the
family its plans for using the funds for the benefit
of the Club.
Obituary –The Club advises with regret of the
death of the following Member:
• Robert Martin Williams, CB CBE,
Member since 1975
Ian Fraser, PRESIDENT
AFTER 26 YEARS OF LOYAL SERVICE:
CLUB OFFICE MANAGER PAMELA MCGILL WILL RETIRE
Pam McGill, the Club Office Manager, often described as the core of the
Club, will retire on 17 May 2013 after over 26 years of excellent service to the
Club and its Members.
Pam joined the Club in December 1986 on a six-month ‘trial period’, followed
by eventually 26 more years as one of the longest standing members of staff
in recent history. She had to implement the first computer system with
many, many further versions and updates, a new franking machine (!) and
accommodate so many more changes during her time at the Club. Some of
the more senior Members will remember that all this occurred still in the
second Clubhouse, the Roger Walker Building. So Pam went through all the
redeveloping of the site, the partial demolition and the opening of the new
Clubhouse in 1990.
Pam will start her retirement in style with a ‘round the world’ cruise of over 100 days!
The Committee at present is looking at how Members can join to celebrate her 26 years of dedicated service.
MYSTERY DINING
The Menu – The Guests – The Date
GUESS WHO IS JOINING YOU FOR DINNER
A new concept borrowed from a fellow Club
providing a unique opportunity to enjoy dinner
with fellow Members and partners whom you may
not have had dinner with before.
There will be a special three-course menu with
matching wines at $80 per person and the guest list,
which will be limited to 14, will be drawn from a
pool of Members who have registered to take part.
This will be a monthly dinner from June onward.
Please register your interest in this new function.
The larger the pool of registrations received, the
more interesting and varied will be the company on
the nights. This is a great opportunity to participate
in Club events, socialising and meeting with other
and perhaps new Members of your Club.
Register now for these innovative mystery nights
of dining. The actual dates for the dinner form
part of the mystery.
FRIDAY DRINKS – Young & Old • FRIDAY 19 APRIL 2013
The first Friday Drinks for Young Old last month was successful and as the President highlighted in his
column, a good time with friends was had with the young being looked after well too!
The function is aimed at Members who would enjoy socialising on a Friday afternoon or evening.
The idea is that husband and wife come to the Club from 5pm onward. The Club will organise someone
to look after the younger children in the adjoining Kumutoto Room, and older children of about teen-age
who wish, are welcome to join the main party, even if on the way going ‘down town’. Similar to Last Friday
Drinks, a light supper will be available. Reservations are essential.
