Sea turtles from the Gulf oil<br />
spill have been released in<br />
Florida<br />
Two boats <strong>of</strong> wildlife rescuers released<br />
42 Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles, plucked<br />
from the waters near the Deepwater<br />
Horizon oil spill, got a second chance.<br />
The releases, Florida’s<br />
wildlife <strong>of</strong>ficials said, was<br />
the largest number <strong>of</strong> rescued<br />
sea turtles returned<br />
to the Gulf <strong>of</strong> Mexico;<br />
thus capping a remarkable<br />
journey <strong>of</strong> rescue<br />
and recovery.<br />
The juvenile turtles were<br />
rescued between June<br />
and August. Of the 42<br />
turtles, 37 were victims <strong>of</strong><br />
the oil spill, and the other<br />
five were found stranded<br />

in Mississippi, but without oil on them.<br />
More than 150 oil spill turtles<br />
are still waiting to<br />
be released.<br />

and their tags<br />

before being<br />

Guana Research Reserve volunteers and staff track<br />
and protect sea turtles<br />
The Guana Research Reserve on Ponte Vedra Beach in<br />
Florida has been busy tracking and protecting loggerhead<br />
sea turtle nests this nesting season.<br />
Loggerhead turtles are the most common sea turtles in the<br />
area. Approximately 72 nests are recorded each year, but<br />
this year the number <strong>of</strong> nests has more than tripled.<br />
Don Eastman, Guana Reserve biologist said, “We may be<br />
experiencing a baby-boom on our beaches.”<br />
Nesting season runs to the end <strong>of</strong> October. This season,<br />
to date, records indicate more than 250 nests have been<br />
counted along the seven-mile beach.<br />
The biologists believe that public education and making<br />
shrimpers use turtle excluder devices on their nets could be<br />
contributing to the increase in the number <strong>of</strong> nests.<br />
A cadre <strong>of</strong> 18 trained volunteers has been the key to the success<br />
<strong>of</strong> the research program. Volunteers not only adopt nests but also<br />
educate people on the beach and through a lecture series on<br />
how to protect sea turtles. ■<br />
The forgotten flatback sea turtle<br />
expedition<br />
The Sea Turtle Restoration Project is working with activists<br />
in Australia to protect the little known flatback sea turtles<br />
that live in the area <strong>of</strong> Western Australia known as the<br />
