SD data for 2004-2005 – response
Companies which provided data for the survey
represent approx. 30 % of the total production.
Significance of data – Communication
to the community
Total number of events arranged for neighbouring communities, amounted to
• 4,442 in 2003
• 6,072 in 2004
• 5,552 in 2005
The absolute figures seem meaningless unless linked to the number of sites.
Proposal
Present the data as a ratio (e.g. 5 events per site on average in 2005)
Significance of data –
Dangerous substances
The indicator on dangerous substances was not considered relevant as no
dangerous substances are used in the production of aggregates.
Significance of data - Transport
The average transport distance from the point of extraction to the point
of sale was
• 24 km on roads,
• 156 km by rail, and
• 156 km by water.
Challenge: Information about onward transport to the customer is not
readily available to the industry
Significance of data –
Environmental incidents
No degree of “gravity” of the environmental incident, which could
theoretically range from a tailing dams collapse to a small leakage.
Minerals Data Managment Experience of the European Aggregates Association (UEPG)
SD data – Challenges
• Fluctuation of data as some companies did not participate
anymore while others joined the exercise
• The area of land rehabilitated in a particular year, and the
rate of opening up of new land for aggregate extraction
can vary considerably
• In Germany more than 50% of all aggregate companies
are mico companies (less than 10 employees)
SD data – Challenges
•Not all questions
could be answered
• Some data is considered to be confidential, e.g.
turnover, R&D investment and exploration costs
Next steps
• Recommended frequency: every 2 or 3 year
• EU Member States should be encouraged to provide data
as well
• Find new sources
and compare data
•Disseminate best
practices at
