COMMERCE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM One way that the Commerce program remains connected to its alumni is through a mentorship program in which a senior student is matched up with a recent graduate to gain insight into the workings of the business world. Deloitte Inc’s Justin Pang, State Street Trust Canada’s Nazneen Khan and RBC Dexia’s Simon Wong (l to r) are a trio of former students who became linked when Nazneen, who had been mentored by Justin, became a mentor to Simon the following year. We are proud of, and grateful to, the many Arts & Science alumni who stay involved with their alma mater. They provide advice to academic leaders, mentor students and advocate on behalf of our priorities. And they are among our most avid supporters, offering the financial support necessary to deliver the quality academic experience our students deserve. In today’s competitive climate, a robust student aid endowment is essential if we are to continue to attract the brightest young talent to U of T, and to encourage our students to realize their educational goals. And, with the support of our alumni, friends and community partners, and matching programs by the Government of Ontario, we have made real progress, securing more than $2 million for scholarships and international travel and research opportunities. 14 2006-2007 Year In Review
MICHAEL HERMAN Michael Herman (MBA 9T3, MA 0T6), the president and CEO of Citipark Inc. and Citicom Inc., was so impressed with the quality of the faculty and rigour of the discipline when he returned to U of T to do a part-time MA in Philosophy that he established a major graduate fellowship. Now he is actively raising awareness of the philosophy department within the local business and legal communities, and sharing his professional expertise with – and opening doors for – students. 2,044 donors supported Arts & Science 6,711 undergraduate students graduated to become new alumni CHANCELLOR HAL JACKMAN GIFT TO HUMANITIES A new $15-million gift by the Hon. Hal Jackman has doubled a commitment the U of T Chancellor Emeritus and alumnus made five years ago, triggering another two-fold match by the University for an unprecedented cumulative $90.5- million investment in humanities scholarship. PHOTO: LISA SAKULENSKY The Marie Curie Sklodowska Association gave $100,000 to establish two undergraduate scholarships and one graduate fellowship for female students in the Department of Physics. A&S was also the beneficiary of several bequests, including the Estate of Elizabeth Barclay Hope in support of graduate students in the humanities. 2006-2007 Arts and Science Donor Breakdown Corporations 3% Professor Emeritus Jacques Kornberg established the Kornberg- Jezierski Family Memorial Essay Prize in Holocaust Studies with restitution money from the Belgian government for property plundered during the German occupation, 1940-1945. The gift was made in memory of the family members who perished in the genocide of the European Jews. More than $500,000 was secured to support Hungarian studies, thanks to the generosity of Tibor Fekete and The Széchenyi Society, a Calgary-based association which promotes Hungarian culture in Canada.
