BIEBER RED ANGUS BULL DEVELOPMENT: 

We have learned a lot in 40 years of producing bulls customers 

come back for, like how to stack the right genetics 

to produce efficient, profitable cattle. The truth is, there is a 

lot more to it than mating the right cows to the right bulls. 

Every year we have customers tell us how our bulls stand 

up better compared to bulls from other breeders. We are 

very proud of how they stand up under reasonable conditions. 

Cattle feeding is 1/3 skill, 1/3 science and 1/3 art. Feed too 

much and cattle get fat and will not hold up for our customers. 

Feed wrong and you lose out on a bull expressing 

his full genetic potential. We try to feed our bulls similar 

to how we believe our customers will feed their calves. We 

start them on a 41meg ration (expected gain 1.5 to 2 ADG) 

and keep them on it for the first 45 days. That prepares the 

rumen flora to handle a higher meg ration. The bulls are 

next taken up to a 46meg ration (expected gain 2.25 to 2.7 

ADG) for three weeks. At that time they are moved up to a 

52meg ration (expected gain 3.2 to 3.5 ADG). We keep the 

bulls on that ration until they are scanned and at that time 

they are moved back down to the 46 meg and kept there 

through the sale until delivery. We make a concerted effort 

to feed our bulls feed stuffs raised on our ranch and feed 

we feel that our customers will have access to. Our ration 

consists of alfalfa hay, grass hay, barley silage, high moisture 

corn, wet distillers grain and mineral. We try to feed a 

least-cost ration. 

When you look through the catalog you will see many bulls 

gaining between 3 and 4 pounds per day. They are not under 

fed. When you walk through the pens on sale day the 

bull are not fat. The bulls are in good condition with plenty 

of muscle. We can talk about genetics all day, but if the bulls 

are over fed they just won’t stand up in the long run. 

The truth is it just makes sense to buy 43 years of experience.

EPD: Expected Progeny Difference. The expected difference (usually pounds) 

in performance of a bull’s progeny when those progeny are compared to progeny 

of a sire with an EPD of zero for the trait in question. EPD values are relative. 

They do not indicate absolute levels of performance. Rather, they can be 

used to compare expected progeny performance of different bulls. 

Acc: (ACCURACY): A measure of the reliability of an EPD. Accuracy values 

are reported as decimal numbers between zero and one. Values closer to one 

indicate larger amounts of available information and greater certainty that 

a bull’s EPD will not change significantly as more progeny information becomes 

available. 

CED EPD: Calving Ease Direct (percent). The probability that an animal’s 

calves will be born without assistance to a two-year-old cow. 

BW EPD: Birth Weight (pounds). An animal’s expected progeny difference 

for birth weight of a calf. Progeny of sires with lower birth weight EPD values 

will generally be born with less calving difficulty. 

WW EPD: Weaning Weight (pounds). An animal’s expected progeny difference 

for 205-day, mature dam equivalent weaning weight. A sire’s weight EPD 

is an indication of growth to weaning. It does not indicate milk production. 

YW EPD: Yearling Weight (pounds). An animal’s expected progeny difference 

for 365-day, mature dam equivalent yearling weight. The yearling weight 

EPD is a measure of growth from birth to a year of age. 

Milk EPD: Maternal Milk (pounds). The expected difference (due to milk 

production alone) in weaning weight of calves out of a bull’s daughters compared 

to calves from daughters of a bull with a zero 

EPD for maternal milk: Maternal milk EPD values are measured in pounds 

— Glossary Of Terms — 

of calf weaned to indicate milking ability.

TM EPD: Weaning Weight Total Maternal (pounds). The expected overall 

difference in weaning weight of calves out of a bull’s daughters compared to 

calves from daughters of a bull with a zero EPD for total maternal. The total 

maternal EPD is a measure of both growth and milking ability and is an indicator 

of the size of a calf a bull’s daughter will wean. 

ME EPD: Maintenance Energy. Used to select parents that will produce low 

consuming replacement females with lower energy requirements. 

HPG EPD: The profitability that an animal’s daughters will conceive to calve 

as two year olds. 

CEM EPD: Calving Ease Total Maternal (percent). The probability that an 

animal’s daughters will calve unassisted as two-year-olds. 

Stay EPD: Stayability (percent). The probability that after an animal’s daughters 

enter a herd, they will remain productive until the age of six. The EPD is 

primarily a measure of sustained fertility in female offspring. 

MAR EPD: Carcass Marbling Score (score 2-10). Higher values tend to be 

associated with higher USDA quality grades on slaughter progeny. 

REA EPD: Carcass Rib Eye Area (sq. inches). The expected different in rib 

eye area measured between the 12th and 13th rib of a sire’s progeny. Higher 

values may be an indication of higher lean meat yields on slaughter progeny. 

ADG: The average daily gain during the test period beginning in late September—ending 

in mid January. 

WDA: Weight per day of age from birth.

DELIVERY POLICY: 

Free delivery on all bull purchases over $2000, to central points within 300 miles. Volume purchases 

of 5 or more bulls selling to one ranch delivered up to 500 miles. All bulls under $2000 and 

females will be delivered to central points at cost. Central point for delivery will include auction 

barns, vet clinics and ranches that offer to serve as a delivery point. We simply ask for your cooperation 

in arranging the delivery of your bulls. This will keep the bulls from being on the truck 

longer that necessary and help to get the bulls to you with the least possible stress and in the best 

possible condition. 

We are able to load out bulls during the sale, but request your patience while we sort and get your 

bulls to the loading area. Please let the clerks know if you plan to load out. They will notify the crew 

and direct you to the loading area. It would also be helpful if you would contact us in advance if you 

plan to haul your own so that we can research health testing requirements for your state.

Cowherd Building Traits 

Profit starts at Reproduction! 

Placing selection pressure on traits that 

will have a direct impact on your 

marketed product (weaned calves, yearlings, 

carcasses sold in the meat) 

can certainly increase your revenue on a 

per calf basis. However, in order to 

achieve the higher goal of increased revenue 

per cow exposed, selection 

pressure must be placed on cow herd 

building traits. 

Profitable reproduction can be 

boiled down to success in these 

four Economically Relevant 

Traits: 

Calving Ease Direct (CED): The expected 

progeny difference of calves being 

born unassisted from two year-old 

heifers. The Red Angus CED model 

accounts for contemporary group birth 

weight differences and calving ease 

scores. 

Heifer Pregnancy (HPG): The expected 

progeny difference of heifers conceiving 

to calve at two years of age. 

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): The 

expected progeny difference of a given 

animal's daughters calving unassisted at 

two years of age. 

Stayability (STAY): The expected progeny 

difference of a bull's daughters 

remaining in the herd until at least six 

years of age. Females that don't stay in 

the herd that long are losing money, and 

they also contribute to a higher rate of 

replacement females that the rancher 

can’t cash crop.

Makin’ Hay was our pick of the 2004 summer bulls and we used him extensively the last couple of years. His data puts 

him in exclusive company. His dam is the most valuable cow we own. His maternal brother Rough Rider is going to 

leave a big mark. You read and hear a lot of talk about cattle turning the curve twice with low BW, fast growth and 

moderate mature size. This cowline does precisely that. Semen is available through Accelerated Genetics. Makin Hay

We have been extremely excited about this sire. Rough Rider is backed by Bieber Adelle 8958 who is also the dam of 

Bieber Makin Hay 9913. This cow is also one of our highly valued cows. We have used this bull extensively. His full 

brother was our top selling bull last year selling to Select Sires. We like the current sons for their moderated size and 

thickness just like their sire. We really like the shape of these cattle, with lots of muscle and thickness over the top. We 

understand human nature and generally that it causes us to chase extremes, but this bull hit what we think may be the 

sweet spot in EPD’s. He has a predisposition to produce less mature size. We are really excited about calving the first 

large group of daughters. We sold Canadian semen rights to Brylor and are fired up about see his progeny in Canada. 

Rough Rider has 18 sons in the offering. Semen in the US is available through us and available in Canada through 

Brylor Semen Sales.

This sire we are sure will get a lot of interest in the next few years. EXT is stout for WW and YW growth data being 

in the top 4% of the breed. He has moderate mature size and carcass that is in the top 9% for Marbling and top 7% for 

REA. He is also an outcross with EXT and Payweight in his pedigree. The EXT line is known for great udders, lots of

Packer puts together a nice combination of Marbling and Muscle. We purchased natural service rights on him a couple 

of years ago. We have been impressed with the progeny from this sire. His Growth is in the top 25% of the breed.

We use Conquest AI on heifers and in our ET program. 

We have a lot of respect for the Hueftles and their program. 

Scott Starr and Don Trimmer found this sire in 

2005 and we liked what we heard about him. The progeny 

are thick topped and have lots of capacity. It appears 

that Conquest will moderate mature size yet maintain

We didn’t know a lot about his sire when we saw him a few years ago at Hawkeye West but liked him right away. Then 

we had a look at his data and really liked him. This sire is a breed changer for marbling and does a lot of things right.

BIDDING DISPUTES: The auctioneer in charge will settle any disputes as to bids, and 

his decision on such matters shall be final. 

TERMS: The terms of the sale are cash, the right of property shall not pass until after 

settlement is made. All settlements will be made with the clerks of the sale immediately 

following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released from the 

ranch. 

RETAINED INTEREST: We are retaining 1/2 interest in all bulls in the sale. We are 

selling the remaining 1/2 interest, full possession, and full salvage value on these bulls. 

This option gives Bieber Red Angus Ranch the option to collect, use and market semen 

from the bull and does not restrict the purchaser from doing the same. This collection, 

unless agreed otherwise, would be done at the expense of Bieber Red Angus Ranch, at 

the buyers convenience. Also at the time of purchase, the highest bidder on a retained 

interest bull may elect to purchase exclusive semen rights for 100% of the purchase 

price in addition to the purchased price on retained bulls. If a buyer elects to purchase 

exclusive semen rights, Bieber Red Angus Ranch interest then becomes in herd use 

only, but Bieber Red Angus Ranch retains all rights to use the bull within their herd. 

SEMEN RIGHTS: Buyers receive semen rights proportional to the interest purchased. 

If you purchase a 1/2 interest then you are entitled to 1/2 of the semen collections at 

cost provided that you indicate you want semen prior to collection. We intend to collect 

some of the bulls in the sale and sample them in our herd. We will cooperate with 

the buyer in collection of the bull. We prefer to collect most bulls after the first season 

of use and we will contact the buyer when we intend to collect the bull at a time convenient 

for the buyer. 

PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. 

Animals will be fed, watered and cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable time. 

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished 

for each animal sold as a registered animal, after settlement has been made. A.I. Certificates 

for females sold bred artificially to bulls not owned by the seller are the buyers 

responsibility to obtain. 

HEALTH: All cattle will have official health certificates and will sell guaranteed exported 

to Canada. Canadian health certificates will be charged at cost on animals selling 

under $2000. 

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Changes of information contained in this catalog relating to 

the animals offered for the sale will be announced from the auction box and such announcements 

shall take precedence. Errors discovered in the catalog will be corrected 

by announcements at sale time and such corrections will take precedence over the 

printed matter in this catalog. 

BREEDER’S GUARANTEE: 1. All animals are guaranteed breeders, with the exception 

of: a) calves under twelve months of age; b) animals shown by Purchaser after sale 

(in cases of animals shown after purchase, the breeding guarantee, if any, shall be such 

as agreed upon between Seller and Buyer; or c) gross negligence or willful misconduct 

on the part of the Purchaser. 2. Bulls are guaranteed breeders if not allowed to run with 

the herd until at least 14 months of age. Any bull which either: a) settles 1/3 or more 

of the healthy cows he serves; b) is the sire of 20 or more animals; or c) settles cows by 

natural service and passes a fertility test made by a competent veterinarian during any 

6 month period of trial (provided for in paragraph 2 of the section of these sale terms 

and conditions entitled “Options and Privileges of Return or Adjustment”) shall be 

considered a breeder. 

Any guarantee with respect to the ability to freeze semen shall be by separate agreement 

between Buyer and Seller. Open females have not been served and are so guaranteed. 

IDENTIFICATION: Each animal carries a readable tattoo. Tag numbers on the cattle 

correspond with lot and tattoo numbers in this catalog. Purchaser agrees to use full 

name of animal in advertising and on stall cards at shows. 

OPTIONS AND PRIVILEGES OF RETURN OR ADJUSTMENT: 

1. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing either within six months 

of the sale date or no later than six months after the animal reaches 18 months of age, 

with the exception of claims involving defects or parentage. 

2. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned 

to the farm of the Seller if in good condition and complying with the health requirements 

of the Sellers state. The Seller shall be entitled to six months trial following 

the return of the animal in which to prove the animal is a breeder, the Seller shall, 

at the option of the Buyer, replace the animal with another of equal value or grant 

the Buyer a credit for use on any products marketed by the Seller. Such credit of the 

full purchase price shall in any case be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. Any 

expense incurred for transporting an animal claimed to be a non-breeder shall be 

the responsibility of the Purchaser, except that the Seller shall be responsible for the 

transportation costs in excess of the distance between the Purchaser’s farm and the 

location where the sale took place. If the Seller proves the animal is a breeder, it shall 

be the obligation of the Purchaser to take delivery of the animal and pay all expense 

incurred for transportation. 

3. If a female sold as “safe in calf ” proves not to be in calf, the Purchaser may receive 

service from the bull previously used, if available, or if the bull is not available, the 

Seller shall be obligated to make a satisfactory adjustment on the purchase price 

upon return of the animal to the farm of the Seller. Any adjustment provided for 

herein shall absolve the Seller from further liability, except in case such female 

proves to be a non-breeder. If a female represented as “safe in calf ” at time of sale to 

a certain bull proves to have been bred to a different bull, the Seller shall be obligated 

to take a satisfactory adjustment on the purchase price upon return of the animal 

to the farm of the Seller (adjustments shall not be considered to a breeding fee or 

an allocation of the purchase price to any unborn calf). Any expenses incurred for 

transportation shall be the responsibility of the Purchaser, except that the Seller shall 

be responsible for the transportation costs in excess to the distance between the 

Purchaser’s farm and the location where the sale took place. 

4. If a female sold as “served” proves not to be in calf, or if a female sold as “pasturebred” 

proves not to be in calf, the Seller only guarantees such female to the breeder. 

5. If a female sold as “open” proves to be with calf, the Purchaser may return the animal 

to the farm of the Seller prior to calving for a credit of the full purchase price or for 

another animal of equal value, whichever is acceptable to the Purchaser. It shall be 

the obligation of the Seller to bear any expense incurred for transportation. 

LIABILITY: Neither owners, sale managers, clerks nor anyone connected with the sale 

assumes responsibility, legal, or otherwise for damages of any kind. 

CONTRACT: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the 

buyer and seller of each animal sold. 

IMPLIED WARRANTY: Except for those stated in the terms and conditions, there 

are no warranties, either expressed or implied, as to merchantability or fitness for a 

particular purpose with respect to the cattle being sold in this auction. The warranties 

set forth in terms and conditions are in lieu of all other warranties, either expressed 

or implied and the remedies proved therein shall be the sole and exclusive remedy of 

the buyer, or any part claiming through buyer, for any breach of warranty or guarantee 

therein provided and all other obligations or liabilities
