guest consignors, we at Transcon Livestock Corporation 

would like to welcome you to the annual edition of the Fall 

Extravaganza, this one being labelled as the “Expanded 

Extravaganza!” 

As so many quality operations do end becoming “larger than 

life” to the owners/staff an event that can perform “herd therapy” 

becomes a necessity to the everyday management of the program 

physically and for the betterment of its internal infrastructure. 

Therefore we see this year’s Extravaganza as “expanded” not 

only to take the pressure off everyone at Bar 5 but what will in 

turn offer a unique opportunity to registered and commercial 

producers alike from a buying capacity. As we all know, whether 

Bar 5 was based out of Douglas, MB or Markdale, ON, they have 

always been a leader in introducing new Fullblood Simmental 

genetics to Canada. Of course not all worked to the expectation 

levels Bar 5 always had but we also need to “give credit when 

credit is due” and no one out can say that bulls like “The Master” 

- Extra Best, 16Y, Paymaster, Kalgery, Evan, Optimal, Harrach, 

Vuursalag, Piona, Expert, Evolution and others have not had a 

positive impact on Fullblood Simmental Genetics Canada-wide, 

North American-wide and World-wide! In essence, the mission 

statement of Bar 5 has been to genetically lead the Simmental 

industry in Canada with a success that has expanded outside 

its home borders to make it a leader on a global level. The 

“Expanded Extravaganza” leaves many doors open to both the 

domestic and International Fullblood Simmental communities 

to add these leading edge genetics to their herds on a scale never 

offered by Bar 5 in this volume since the Douglas, MB Dispersal! 

Not only does the volume of the event add an enticement to 

attend but a straight out economic value is offered to prospective 

buyers as there is simply just “more” to see! 

We’ve always promoted that to enhance your success you 

need to surround yourself with strong marketing personell and 

when possible, quality breeders too. Bar 5 has always proudly 

been more than accommodating hosts to the public and to their 

guest consignors. These guests have in turn “shown up in Aces” 

with some of the best Fullblood cattle to be offered for sale 

anywhere in the country. As you look at the cattle presented by 

Prospect Hill, Gibbons, Buschbeck, the “Quebec contingent” and 

the “Forum” group, it ranks as a “who’s who” among Eastern 

Canadian Simmi breeders! Not only do they sell outstanding 

cattle but they attend other events nationwide and are usually 

seen buying on the top-end! This roster just adds to the 

enticement to jump in your car or catch a plane or however you 

need to travel, it justifies itself! 

We are proud to be representing all the participants of 

the “Fall Expanded Extravaganza” as their complete sales 

management team. We do encourage you to attend; however,

Comme un si grand nombre d’entreprises de qualité finissent 

par devenir « plus grandes que nature » pour leurs propriétaires 

et leur personnel, un événement qui peut représenter une « 

thérapie de troupeau » devient une nécessité pour la gestion 

quotidienne du programme, physiquement et pour l’amélioration 

de son infrastructure interne. Ainsi, nous voyons « l’Extravaganza 

» de cette année comme étant « étendue », non seulement afin de 

diminuer la pression pour tout le monde à Bar 5, mais aussi pour 

offrir aux producteurs enregistrés et commerciaux une occasion 

d’achat unique. Comme nous le savons tous, que Bar 5 soit basé à 

Douglas, MB, ou à Markdale, ON, ils ont toujours agi comme un 

leader pour introduire des produits génétiques Simmental 

pur-sang au Canada. Bien entendu, tous n’ont pas atteint le 

niveau des attentes qu’avait toujours Bar 5, mais nous devons 

aussi « rendre à César ce qui appartient à César » et personne ne 

peut dire que des taureaux tels que « The Master », Extra Best, 

16Y, Paymaster, Kalgery, Evan, Optimal, Harrach, Vuursalag, 

Piona, Expert, Evolution et autres n’ont pas eu un impact positif 

sur la génétique Simmental pur-sang dans l’ensemble du Canada, 

de l’Amérique du Nord et dans le monde entier! Essentiellement, 

l’énoncé de mission de Bar 5 consiste à être le leader en génétique 

de l’industrie Simmental au Canada avec un succès qui s’est 

étendu à l’extérieur des frontières et en a fait un leader sur la 

scène mondiale. « L’Extravaganza étendue » laisse plusieurs 

portes ouvertes aux communautés Simmental pur-sang locales 

et internationales, leur permettant d’ajouter cette génétique de 

pointe dans leur troupeau à une échelle jamais offerte par Bar 5 

dans une telle mesure depuis la dispersion de Douglas, MB! Non 

seulement l’étendue de l’activité ajoute-t-elle une incitation à y 

assister, mais une valeur économique directe est aussi offerte aux 

acheteurs éventuels puisqu’il y a simplement « plus » à voir! 

Nous avons toujours insisté sur le fait que pour accroître 

votre succès, vous devez vous entourer de personnel de 

marketing solide et, lorsque c’est aussi possible, d’éleveurs 

de qualité. Bar 5 a toujours été fier d’être un hôte plus 

qu’accommodant pour le public et leurs consignataires invités. À 

leur tour, ces invités se sont « présentés en masse » avec certains 

des meilleurs bovins pur-sang à être mis en vente partout au pays. 

Lorsque vous observez les animaux qu’ont présentés Prospect 

Hill, Gibbons, Buschbeck, le « contingent Québec » et le groupe 

« Forum », ils se classent parmi la « fine fleur » des éleveurs 

Simmental dans l’est du Canada! Non seulement vendent-ils 

des bovins exceptionnels, mais ils assistent également à d’autres 

événements à l’échelle nationale et on les voit habituellement 

acheter ce qu’il y a de meilleur! Cette liste ne fait qu’ajouter aux 

autres incitations qui vous feront sauter dans votre voiture ou 

prendre l’avion ou utiliser tout autre moyen de transport, cela se 

justifie en soi!

Bar 5 Farms is located approximately 2 hours north of Pearson 

International Airport. At Pearson International Airport all 

major rental car companies are available to rent from. Grey 

Bruce Airport Shuttle (www.greybruceairbus.com) is a shuttle 

service that operates from the Toronto airport to Markdale and 

back. Their schedule can be found on their website to arrange 

transportation to Markdale. We will need to be notified in 

advance to pick you up at the depot. From there you can either 

arrange a car pool with 

others or we can arrange 

for you to get to your hotel.

The percentile graph does not show anything that is not already published on the website, it just shows the percentiles (where the 

animal fi ts into the CSA population) in a visual way. In this example, the EPD from the animal are shown on the top line, the next line 

shows accuracy or how much information was used in calculating the EPD, the third line shows the percentile rank or where the animal 

fi ts. 50 is right at breed average. Blue lines on the graph to the left of the 

50% show cattle that are below breed average for the trait and the green 

lines to the right show cattle that are above breed average for the trait. 

In this example the sire is in the top 15% for CE. In other words, 85% of the 

Simmental in Canada are harder calving and 15% are easier calving. He is 

in the 55th percentile for carcass weight so 55% of the Simmental produce 

more carcass weight and 45% produce lighter carcasses. The trait is shown 

to the left of the graph and the percentile rank is shown to the right. 

IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO NOTE: the graph and percentiles do 

not show whether an animal is good or bad, only where they fi t in the 

population. For example, this sire had good CE and powerful growth, but 

very poor maternal characteristics. This is not good or bad, but simply mean 

that he may be a better fi t to produce feeder cattle than replacement heifers. 

Depending on what the customer needs/wants will determine what type of 

cattle they need. For example a producer may want a sire in the top 10% CE 

for use on heifers and growth below average, but may want well above 

average growth for use on cows and accept lower CE.

“DNA” PARENT VERIFICATION 

We DNA all of our animals so every bull and heifer has its Dam and Sire 

DNA’d. We have collected hair on every Bar 5 bull and heifer through the 

Test Station, for future DNA Marker or DNA recordation. We believe in two 

responsibilities deeply. 

1) Genetic Integrity & 2) Genetic Improvement. 

SIGHT UNSEEN PURCHASE PROGRAM 

If you are unable to attend the sale but are interested in a bull, give any of 

the team a call and they will personally go over the bulls and your program 

and recommend the bull that meets your needs. 

TERMS & CONDITIONS

at par at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have

BID: Every animal consigned to the sale will be sold by auction to

DISPUTES: In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the 

parties involved if no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person 

from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The Auctioneer`s 

decision in such matters will be fi nal. The 

Auctioneer shall have the right to refuse bids from anyone who has 

a previous record of default in payment or who has not made proper 

credit clearance prior to the sale. 

PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser 

as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser`s risk for a 

reasonable length of time. 

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Announcements from the auction block will take 

precedence over the printed matter in this catalogue. Buyers are 

therefore cautioned to pay attention to such announcements. 

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: The proper Registration or Recordation 

paper, as the case may be, will be duly transferred and furnished. 

TRANSPORTATION: Bar 5 will arrange for trucking to your farm or a 

central point; the following charges will apply unless the buyer wishes 

to take care of shipping themselves: Local $50, Ottawa Valley $150, 

Montreal $200, Maritimes $250, Manitoba $200, Saskatchewan & 

Alberta $250, and U.S.A. $300 plus Export fees. Your purchase may 

stay here free of charge until OCTOBER 31, then a fee of $5.00 per

BREEDERS GUARANTEE 

BULLS: Should any bull fourteen (14) months of age or over, fail to 

prove a breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders, the 

matter shall be reported in writing to the seller within six (6) months 

following date of purchase or six (6) months after the bull has reached 

fourteen (14) months of age. The seller will have the right and 

privilege of six (6) months to prove the bull a breeder. No guarantee 

is given that semen collected from the bull will be suitable for artifi cial 

insemination. 

FEMALES: Cows represented as being “pregnancy tested, safe in calf” 

have been examined and declared by a licensed veterinarian and will 

be accompanied by a veterinarian’s certifi cate to the effect. They are 

considered breeders without further guarantee. Cows with calves 

at side shall be considered breeders also without further guarantee; 

cows and heifers represented at “bred” are not guaranteed safe in 

calf but they are open heifers selling as individual lots are guaranteed 

to be breeders. No guarantee shall apply to sucking calves. In the 

event a female is claimed to be a non-breeder, after having been 

bred regularly to a bull known to be a breeder and after having been 

treated by a licensed veterinarian, the matter must be reported in 

writing to the seller within six (6) months of sale date. For heifers 

under twelve (12) months of age and purchased as a single lot and 

who fail to conceive to the services of a bull known to be a breeder, 

the matter must be reported in writing to the seller before the heifer 

reaches eighteen (18) months of age. The seller shall have six (6) 

additional months in which to prove any such female a breeder and 

may use any registered bull of the breed available to him. Any female 

returned will be at the purchaser’s risk. No guarantee is given that a 

pregnant female will deliver live calves nor that she will carry calves 

full term nor that the calf carried will not be mummifi ed. The seller is 

not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies after the animal 

has been sold or for sickness not apparent at sale time. 

EXCEPTION OF GUARANTEE: In cases where the animal is subjected 

to hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, the 

guarantee shall be null and void. 

SETTLEMENT: TRANSPORTATION CHARGES ON ANIMALS 

RETURNED TO THE SELLER ARE FOR ACCOUNT OF THE 

PURCHASER. No incidental expenses such as feed, A.I. signing 

fees, interest, veterinary charges, etc., will be charged by the either 

party when making settlement. If the seller is successful in proving 

the animal a breeder, the said animal will be reclaimed by the 

purchaser at his expense. Should the seller fail to prove the animal 

a breeder, then the buyer is guaranteed a satisfactory replacement, 

F.O.B. ranch or location of origin or a refund of the actual purchase 

price paid F.O.B. selling point. In no event shall the seller be 

responsible for more than the purchase price. 

HEALTH: All animals will have passed the required tests as 

determined by Agriculture Canada at sale location. It is the buyer’s 

responsibility to determine health requirements for importing any 

animal into his province, state or country. 

ACCIDENTS: Although every precaution will be taken to protect 

the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the Owner’s, Sale’s 

Management or Staff, assume any responsibility in this matter and 

disclaims any liability legal or otherwise in the event of accident or 

loss of property. 

RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS: The above terms and conditions of the 

sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller and
