Technology/Cengage Learning Incorporated, 2010, ISBN-13: 978-1-435-49778-8<br />

Software: Students enrolled in this course will receive a fully licensed copy of Windows 7 Server Edition to take<br />

home <strong>and</strong> install on their home computer. The software is distributed under the Microsoft Dreamspark program to<br />

encourage students to pursue careers in Networking <strong>and</strong> Servers utilizing Microsoft products.<br />

College Credit: This course is available <strong>for</strong> 6 college credits through MCC's Running Start program <strong>and</strong> aligns<br />

with Manchester Community College's CIS 102 A+ <strong>and</strong> CIS 103 A+ Courses.<br />

Course Objectives: Students will gain a complete, step-by-step approach <strong>for</strong> learning the fundamentals of<br />

supporting <strong>and</strong> troubleshooting computer hardware <strong>and</strong> software. This course maps fully to CompTIA’s latest 2009<br />

A+ Exam objectives.<br />

Catalog Description: Students returning <strong>for</strong> a second year of <strong>Computer</strong> Electronics will work primarily as<br />

entry-level technicians. Tasks will include assembly of new computer systems, installation <strong>and</strong> configuration of<br />

systems <strong>and</strong> peripherals, support staff with a variety of computer needs, <strong>and</strong> repair <strong>and</strong> maintain a two-hundred node<br />

Novell network within the school system. A good portion of class time will be dedicated to preparation <strong>for</strong> the A+<br />

Technician Certification Exam. Upon graduation, students are able to work as entry-level technicians <strong>and</strong> sales <strong>and</strong><br />

support personnel in a wide variety of technical fields. Further study is recommended <strong>for</strong> those wishing to pursue<br />

this highly technical field. A majority of graduates do elect to pursue further study at 2 or 4-year colleges.<br />

Additional credits are available <strong>for</strong> those students wishing to pursue internships in the field. Prerequisite: Grade of<br />

C or better in <strong>Computer</strong> Networking<br />

All students are requested to obtain an e-mail account. The e-mail account name must be school appropriate <strong>and</strong> the<br />

student’s full name must be included in the e-mail name field. If you have any questions about the course or need<br />

assistance, please contact the instructor in person or by e-mail at any time. Most assignments must be submitted by<br />

e-mail on or be<strong>for</strong>e 3:00 P.M. on the due date. The Microsoft Word <strong>for</strong>mat should be used <strong>for</strong> any e-mail<br />

submissions.<br />

Grading <strong>and</strong> Evaluation Criteria:<br />

In this class, students will be evaluated according to per<strong>for</strong>mance in the following categories:<br />

Assignments, labs <strong>and</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mance tests 20%<br />

Exams, quizzes, research <strong>and</strong> presentation 30%<br />

Work as a student technician 30%<br />

Final Exam 20%<br />

Attendance:<br />

Students are expected to be present <strong>and</strong> punctual <strong>for</strong> all scheduled classes <strong>and</strong> labs.<br />

Special Accommodations:<br />

If you have a special learning need or issue, please notify your instructor immediately. Students are required to<br />

provide documentation of disability to Disability Support Services prior to receiving accommodations.<br />

Classroom Etiquette:<br />

Pagers <strong>and</strong> cell phones will be turned off or set to vibrate mode during class. Please show courtesy to the class by<br />

restricting conversation to in-class topics, <strong>and</strong> raise your h<strong>and</strong> to gain attention when asking a question or raising a<br />

point of discussion.<br />

Lab Equipment:<br />

Students are expected to respect the equipment in the lab <strong>and</strong> make the learning environment relaxed <strong>and</strong><br />

com<strong>for</strong>table <strong>for</strong> all. Much of the equipment in the lab is in <strong>for</strong> servicing by customers <strong>and</strong> does not belong to the<br />

school. Students are not to use or work on any equipment without first checking with the instructor.<br />

Academic Honesty:<br />

The high school experience is founded on the concepts of honesty <strong>and</strong> integrity. Dishonesty, cheating, plagiarism,<br />

or knowingly furnishing false in<strong>for</strong>mation to the school are regarded as particularly serious offenses. Cases of<br />

dishonesty will be h<strong>and</strong>led by levying heavy penalties. In flagrant cases the penalty may be dismissal from school<br />

after proper due process proceedings.<br />

Turning in Work:<br />

In order to help reduce printing <strong>and</strong> paper costs, all documents need to be submitted via e-mail. Be sure your e-mail<br />

account includes your full name <strong>and</strong> the assignment topic is in the subject field.<br />

Late Coursework:<br />

All assignments are to be turned in on the due date.<br />

Late work will be accepted at the instructor’s discretion <strong>for</strong> partial credit.<br />

Research <strong>and</strong> Communication:<br />

Communication skills, both oral <strong>and</strong> written, are a widely recognized issue in need of improvement in the field of<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation technology. Many proficient technicians have limited skills communicating with co-workers <strong>and</strong> endusers.<br />

Our goal is to address this issue by having students per<strong>for</strong>m research <strong>and</strong> present findings as part of the class.<br />

Catalog Description: The A+ Preparation class is the starting point <strong>for</strong> a career in IT. The class covers<br />

maintenance of PCs, mobile devices, laptops, operating systems <strong>and</strong> printers <strong>and</strong> prepares students <strong>for</strong><br />

CompTIA’s A+ hardware exam.<br />

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:<br />

1. Identify all major components of a PC computer system <strong>and</strong> to describe the function of each.<br />

2. Describe the main technologies associated with computer networking.<br />

3. Identify all major components of a Laptop computer system <strong>and</strong> to describe the function of each.<br />

5. Describe the main technologies associated with the operational procedures of computer hardware.<br />

Tuition Refund Policy: Refunds of the $150 Running Start tuition fee cannot be issued by the college.<br />

This is a Running Start Program / CCSNH (Community College System of NH) policy.<br />

Dropping a Course: Simply ceasing to attend classes or notifying the instructor does not constitute<br />

officially dropping a course. If you plan to drop the course, you must complete an official Drop <strong>for</strong>m<br />

which is available from the college website: www.mccnh.edu by clicking on Academics <strong>and</strong> then Forms<br />

to Download. You <strong>and</strong> your Running Start teacher will need to sign the Drop <strong>for</strong>m <strong>and</strong> then <strong>for</strong>ward it to<br />

the Running Start Coordinator at least 6 weeks be<strong>for</strong>e the end of the course.<br />
