Damaged cans very often cause obstructions and can stop your production line. Contamination and
foreign objects inside the can jeopardize the product quality. In order to achieve perfect packaging and
maintain quality of the product together with high production line efficiency, filtec has developed an
Empty Can Inspection System for beverage and food cans: SpectroVision ECI (Empty Can Inspection).
This new inspection unit is based on the proven and
already well known technology of the SpectroVision
series. Powerful industrial processors (IPC), robust
electronic hardware, high resolution camera systems as
well as FireWire bus technology are the distinguishing
features of this product line.
The system inspects the inner sidewall and the base of
the can for contaminates, damage and foreign objects.
The SpectroVision ECI will detect production related
faults (grooves, crinkles, coating defects, etc.) as well as
transport damages (dents). The flange of the can is
checked for the possibility of it being oval shaped,
contaminates, bends and improperly formed seaming
flanges. The elimination of these faulty cans will improve
the overall quality of the package and will effectively
reduce the number of obstructions at the filler. This will
result in a higher efficiency of the production line and
provide a return on investment in a rather short period of
time.

A high-speed reject system provides a reliable elimination of all faulty
cans from the production line. The system also allows the rejection of
a large number of faulty cans in a row (batch rejection) without any
problems. This way all deformed, contaminated or faulty cans are
eliminated prior to the filler from the production line. As a result, the
number of obstructions and stops will be considerably reduced. The
production line efficiency will improve and in addition a high quality of
package and product is guaranteed.
In addition to the detection of cans with damages, contaminates
and foreign objects, the print of the cans can be verified with an
additional color CCD camera (optional). This feature can be used
to insure that the package and the contents correspond and no
incorrectly filled cans reach the consumer.
The SpectroVision ECI Empty Can Inspection is installed prior to
the can rinser in the single lane conveyor. At this position in the
production line, residual water drops from the rinser will not
influence the evaluation of the camera pictures. The system can be
easily integrated into existing production lines. Due to the minimum
space requirements and the installation above the single lane
conveyor, only marginal modification will be required for the
installation of the system.
