Learning for life through
a network of caring
The Calgary Board of Education is proud to
offer a specialized education program for
pregnant or parenting teens.
Louise Dean School works collaboratively
with Catholic Family Service and Alberta
Health Services to provide students with a
wrap-around support program. All services
are on the same site and collectively the
name is Louise Dean Centre. The Centre is
grateful to the many community supporters
who enrich our program and the lives of
our students.
The goal of the Centre is to graduate young
women who recognize that they have the
skills to be family and community leaders.
Our students achieve this goal.

The school offers ongoing intake dates to
students who are 19 or younger. Students
can register independently, through a
school transfer or with agency assistance.

automatically links students to Catholic
Family Service and Alberta Health Services
support.

In 2011, 38 students graduated from
Louise Dean School and 23 of these
students were accepted to postsecondary
education
Our Partnership Model
Our on-site professional partners ensure that
students receive comprehensive support
throughout their pregnancy or while
parenting.
Catholic Family Service
Catholic Family Service (CFS)
provides free on-site counseling
for students and their families and
facilitates groups for parenting
teens, teen fathers, grandparents
and young women who are
considering adoption. Social
workers also support students
who are facing challenges with
housing, childcare, legal issues
and finances.
The Dr. Clara Christie Learning
Centre provides on-site licensed
childcare for 40 infants or toddlers
up to 19 months of age. Space
limitations mean that not all
Louise Dean students will be able
to utilize this service.
The CFS Outreach Program serves
students who are working to
become school ready or who
have graduated and require
ongoing transition support.
Alberta Health Services
The Centre has a full-time public
health nurse on-site to assist
with prenatal education, breast
feeding, nutrition and the general
health of both the mother and
baby. The public health nurse
assists students in accessing
doctors and medical specialists in
the community. A psychiatrist also
visits the school several times a
month to assist students in need
of emotional support.

Fashion, Design and Computer
Technology and option classes
n Ongoing access to technology

n Scholarship programs

n Flexible scheduling to accommodate
maternity leaves
n Time out of class to meet with social
workers and health care professionals
n Career Counseling/Transition Planning
n Aboriginal Circle and NAPI, Peer Support,
Baby FAST and Momentum
n The Learner’s Bursary – specialized
funding from the Alberta government –
to support pregnant or parenting teens
completing their high school
n Free breakfast and subsidized lunch
program
