Course Description: <strong>This</strong> <strong>course</strong> <strong>will</strong> <strong>focus</strong> on acting and performance art because I feel
that in an introductory class the main idea is getting the student in front of an audience.
Consequently, the majority of activities are designed with this <strong>focus</strong> in mind.
Course Objectives: The primary objective is to familiarize the student with basic drama
techniques and terminology. Also, it is my hope that the student <strong>will</strong> not only find Drama
fun and exciting, but <strong>will</strong> experience the pleasure of creativity and performance.
Course Materials: At the beginning of the semester and again at the end students <strong>will</strong>
write their own scripts; they <strong>will</strong> need paper and pencil. Other than that they <strong>will</strong> be
getting scripts to memorize; these <strong>will</strong> come home with them and must be returned at the
end of each assignment.
Format and Procedures: Students <strong>will</strong> participate in activities that <strong>will</strong> help them become
better actors and speakers. The <strong>course</strong> is divided into acting for film and acting on the
stage. During the process of memorizing and performing monologues, scenes and short
plays, students <strong>will</strong> discover the differences in acting for each medium. The first 10-12
weeks <strong>will</strong> <strong>focus</strong> on acting for the stage, culminating with a final performance of a group
play. The last 8 weeks we explore acting for film.
Course Requirements:
1. Participation in this class is the main requirement for success in this class; it
is the element that figures most heavily in the final grade.
2. Performance and rehearsals are in front of the class only, however, parents
and family are encouraged to come see any final performances during the
student’s period.
Students are expected to exercise good self-discipline; be on time, be prepared, and be
respectful.
Grading Procedures: Grades <strong>will</strong> be determined by attitude, effort, growth and good faith
participation. Extra Credit possibilities exist; please see me if you are interested. My
grading scale is: 93% or above =A, 92-90%=A-, 87-89%=B+, 83-86=B, 82-80=B-,77-
79=C+, 73-76=C, 70-72=C-, 67-69=D+, 63-66=D, 60-62=D-, Below is an F.
Tentative Course Schedule: We <strong>will</strong> begin with writing and performing group skits, then
move into scenes for two, then group plays, monologs, and finish with group skits.
