Happy 2013! 

2012 the Year of Dragon has 

been a very busy and exciting 

year for us. The much awaited 

Gardens of the Bay was 

opened to the public and a set 

of stamps were released to 

commemorate this new 

exciting addition to our 

Singapore Skyline. In August 

2012, we were swept by the 

excitement and euphoria of 

the Olympics Games as 

Singapore won two bronze 

medals in Table tennis. A set of 

4 stamps were released to 

commemorate the Games of 

XXX Olympiad – London 2012 

and a special limited MyStamp 

were released to mark 

Singapore historic win! 

The Panda craze swept over 

Singapore as we welcome the 

two adorable Giant Pandas, 

Jia Jia and Kai Kai, from the 

People’s Republic of China, 

who will be here in Singapore 

for the next 10 years. We 

marked the occasion with a 

set of 3 stamps wonderfully 

illustrated by local international 

artiste Edmund Chen as well 

as a series of limited edition 

panda-related products for 

our collectors.

featuring the hugely popular 

Avengers as well as the ever 

iconic Stars Wars were also

Stamp Issue 

Zodiac Series 

- Snake 

There are a total of 12 animal signs in the Chinese 

calendar based on five cycles of 12 years each, with 

each cycle tempered by one of the five Chinese 

elements of Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth. 

The intelligent, analytical and graceful Snake, 

sixth in the Zodiac Cycle, starts off yet another 

New Year on the Chinese zodiac calendar in 2013. 

Three graphic illustrations of this powerful Snake 

ushering in the new Lunar Year 2013 are shown in 

this set stamps of 1st Local, 65¢ and $1.10. 

Being the sixth of the 12 animal signs, those 

born in the year of the Snake are often said to be 

analytical, influential and insightful. Excellent 

problem solvers with deep philosophical 

understanding and always thrive well under 

tight deadlines, they are wonderful co-workers 

in any team. In the midst of the busy work 

schedule, they know how to wind down and 

relax when such opportunity arises, especially 

by nature, they are people who prefer living a 

life of calmness, selecting quietness over noise. 

As 2013 is the year of the Water Snake, 

they are influential, motivated and highly 

intellectual to see things from other points of 

view. They work well with others and enjoy 

being appreciated for the work they do. 

Contemplative and private people they are, 

and they usually disclose their feelings only to 

those closest to them, and act according to 

their own judgement and often not follow the 

opinions provided by others. 

Famous personalities born in the Snake 

year include Bob Dylan, Art Garfunkel, Anne Rice, 

Mao Zedong, Franz Schubert and Andre Previn.

Stamp Issue 

Historical Railway 

Stations 

Tanjong Pagar railway Station, also known as Keppel 

Road Railway Station or Singapore railway station, 

was a railway terminal owned by Keretapi Tanah 

Melayu ( KTM ), the main railway operator in Malaysia. 

On 24 May 2010, an agreement between the 

governments of Singapore and Malaysia was reached 

to permanently cease operations into and from the 

station from 01 July 2011. 

The Tanjong Pagar railway station was opened 

on 02 May 1932 by then Governor of Singapore, 

Sir Cecil Clementi, and is then, a fine example of 

Modern Architecture with Neo-Classical and Art- 

Deco influences. Four marble reliefs right outside 

the entrance are allegories of Agriculture, Industry, 

Commerce and Transport, representing the source of 

wealth for both Singapore and Malaysia. The waiting 

hall has a barrel vault roof and the wall panels bear 

paintings of Malayan scenes: rice planting, rubber 

tapping, shipping activities, bullock cart transport, 

copra growing and tin mining. 

The Bukit Timah railway station followed the 

style of the traditional small town stations that were 

common in the United Kingdom and Malaya. It is 

an open-sided single-storey brick building that 

front the main railway line with an open platform. 

Its cosy country cottage appearance has made it an 

endearing local landmark. The station acts as a place 

where the trains have to exchange key tokens with 

the stationmaster to give them the right authority 

to enter into the next sector of track. The key token 

is therefore a symbolic representation of a train’s 

authority to pass through a sector. 

This set of stamps allows us to have an 

appreciation of the transportation history 

of Singapore.

A Designer’s Story 

A creative 

journey with 

Brainwave Design 

When Singapore Post invited us at Brainwave 

Design Consultants to submit designs for the 

Historical Railway Stations stamp issue, everyone 

was thrilled because it is not very often that we 

get the opportunity to design something as small 

as a postage stamp. To us, not only is the project 

unique, it also provides many new and exciting 

challenges, such as the constraints posed by the 

stamp size itself. 

Before we sat down to brainstorm for 

design ideas, our design team spent some time 

on the internet to look for information on both 

the Tanjong Pagar and Bukit Timah Railway 

Stations. An immediate challenge we faced was 

the recent closure of the Tanjong Pagar Railway 

Station to members of the public. For this 

reason, we were unable to enter the grounds and 

take close-up shots of its interiors or exteriors. 

Everyone in the studio was tasked to check with 

their friends, scour the internet for picture albums, 

or enquire with the various photographic clubs 

for possible solutions. In short, we tried anything 

and everything we could that will gave us 

access to the pictures we needed. Some images 

we found were perfect, however, we could not 

trace them to their owners. While others have 

declined to let us use their work. After two weeks 

of frantic search, we managed to gathered those 

pictures we need and obtained written permission 

to use them in our project. 

Then came the issue on the quality of the 

pictures collected. We realised that each photo 

varied greatly from one to the other. In order to 

maintain consistency in the final output, our 

designer carried out digital retouching work to 

improve the overall appearance of the images. 

To finalise our design concepts, we discussed, 

among other things, whether the images should 

be in full colour, sepia toned or in black-and-white. 

How tight the cropping of the images should be 

was also taken into consideration. 

We were overjoyed when one of our design 

proposals had been selected by Singapore Post. 

Our team made further revisions to the stamp 

design and that was how the Historical Railway 

Stations stamp issue came into being. We hope 

that stamp collectors will enjoy our work as much 

as we had designing them.

Pond Life 

Definitives ( Series 3 ) 

Ponds are teeming with both animal and plant life. 

If a pond is to be a successful habitat, it must have 

aquatic plants growing in it as they provide food, 

oxygen and shelter for the animals. In this stamp 

issue, we feature two of these interesting pond 

plants, namely the Geli Geli or Lasia spinosa (1st 

Local stamp) and the Water Gentian or Nymphoides 

indica (2nd Local stamp). 

The Lasia spinosa is a perennial tropical and 

aquatic plant that thrives in a location with semishade 

to full sun. It can be found along the banks of 

rivers and in swamps and is tolerant of waterlogged 

conditions. Nymphoides indica or the Water Gentian 

is a pretty, fast-growing, perennial aquatic plant. 

A blooming colony looks like snow-flakes on water.

Snakes are reptiles. Evidence 

indicates that snakes evolved from 

lizards. To adapt to living underground, 

the legs became unnecessary. The 

movable eyelids became transparent 

covers and snakes lost their external 

eardrum. Like all reptiles, snakes have 

scaly skins to prevent them from drying 

up. There are about 3,000 species of 

snakes. They are cold-blooded and 

depend on external heat to keep alive. 

So, many snakes are found in warmer 

tropical areas.

myths of this scaly but not slimy 

creature in the Children’s Gallery. The 

exhibition is held in conjunction with 

the zodiac year of the snake.

The Postal Connection : 

Singapore 

and Thailand 

Explore Thailand’s history and its postal 

connection with Singapore. Learn about 

the importance of Singapore as a postal 

and communication hub and see how 

Singapore inspired the introduction 

and development of postal system in 

Thailand ( then known as Siam ). 

View rare royal letters written in 

Thai and English by King Mongkut ( reign 

from 1851-1868 ) and King Chulalongkorn 

( reign from 1868 – 1910 ) sent to 

Singapore and learn more about them, 

their influences and contributions 

towards the Thai postal system. Other 

rare collections on display include 

Straits Settlements stamps and 

overprinted Straits Settlements stamps 

used in Bangkok, the first Thai stamps 

issued on 4th August 1883 and the 

stamp artwork and proofs.

ON-GOING EXHIBITION 

Spice is Nice 

“Spice Is Nice” exhibition traces the voyages 

of discovery, the history of the spice trade 

and its impact on Singapore, traditional 

cures and flavours of regional cuisine. 

During the 15th to 17th century, 

European countries such as Spain, 

Portugal and the Netherlands sent ships 

and men to track down the origins of 

spices. Learn about some of the explorers 

( Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama 

and Ferdinand Magellan ) who made 

significant contributions to the discovery 

of the origins of spices, and in the process, 

discovered new lands and people.

Experience life at sea as encountered 

by early immigrants from Southern China – 

in a recreated dark and cramped cargo hold 

of a ship, complete with sound effects and 

creepy pests. Touch, feel and smell spices 

that are commonly used in Singapore such 

as pepper, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. 

Did you know that some of these spices 

were once worth their weight in gold Find 

out interesting trivia about these spices. 

Discover the areas of crop cultivation 

in Singapore for gambier, pepper, nutmeg, 

sugarcane, coconut and lemongrass in the 

mid-late 1800s. Then, learn out about notable 

people associated with spice and other 

crops. They are José Almeida, Syed Sharif 

Omar Aljunied, Tan Tock Seng, among others.
