the first half of the century, houses were abandoned,
vulnerable to ruin and sold at low prices.
What turned the tables on this trend during the
Seventies and Eighties was the purchase and restoration
of these properties as holiday homes,
and this ever- increasing flow of city-dwellers
who flock to the area on weekends and holidays
has imposed a different economic order from
the traditional. The pulse which has been recovered
in Pedraza is a merit recently recognised
by the International Europa Nostra Foundation,
who in 1996 awarded Pedraza a diploma “for
the recuperation of life in this walled Medieval
town, through the respectful rehabilitation of its
old buildings, with frequent collaboration from
private initiatives”.

Located in the recently reconstructed church
of San Miguel, it provides information about
the species, about the European conservation
network Natura 2000 and about the Comunidad
de Villa y Tierra of Pedraza.

The town prison
This is a 13th century Medieval building which
was rebuilt in the 16th century. It is the property
of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra of Pedraza
and was opened to the public on 1st
April, 1994 owing to the efforts of the Fundación
Villa de Pedraza (Pedraza foundation),
who since then have run it and provide guided
tours. It is possible to see the remains of
the dungeon, the stocks for the hands and feet
of the prisoners, the large fireplace with the
coat of arms of the jailer's quarters, the gloomy
dungeons on the lower floors, and a long
list of other features which will allow one to
gain an insight into how the history of the
town developed around it.
