Foundation Fellow (Darden School of Business).

2010
from the chairman
and president
A t this time last year the Jefferson
Scholars Foundation had just completed the
most challenging year in its history. The
turmoil in the financial markets had produced
a 21% investment loss for the
G. Moffett Cochran James H. Wright
endowment. This situation necessitated important but rather dramatic
cutbacks in the number of scholarships and fellowships offered by the
Foundation.
What a difference a year makes! In 2010, the endowment generated a
solid 15.1% return. Development activity produced an additional 10.3
million dollars in cash flow. The positive portfolio performance allowed
us to return to our usual pattern of increasing the number of scholarship
recipients in the entering class. We are delighted that the Class of 2014 is
10% larger than the Class of 2013.
The past fiscal year was also one of significant change. Most noteworthy is the successful
completion of the Jefferson Fellows Center and the Foundation’s administrative offices. The
32,700 square-foot facility became fully operational just in time for the arrival of the 101
finalists in this year’s undergraduate scholarship competition. The building, which features
38 geothermal wells for ground-source heat pumps, roofs designed to harvest rainwater for
irrigation, and high-performance windows to maximize daylight, is on the cutting edge
of environmentally sustainable design. It provides Jefferson Fellows with ample space for
teaching and research and permits the Foundation to sponsor a variety of activities for the
University community that only could be imagined before.
The Foundation also undertook a significant review of its governance structure. Working
closely with the U.Va. Alumni Association, which created the Jefferson Scholarship Program
three decades ago, the Foundation’s Board of Directors identified several areas, including

jefferson scholars foundation 2010
accounting responsibility, audit engagement procedures,
investment responsibility, and the manner in which the
Foundation’s Chairman is appointed, that will require revisions
to the Foundation’s governance documents. The Foundation
and the Alumni Association approved a Memorandum of
Understanding that when implemented will produce changes
that will reflect best governance practices and will help assure the
Foundation’s continued growth.
In his role as chairman of the Board, Rick Kellogg played a critical role in both the
completion of the building and the improvements in the governance structure. On April
16, 2010, the Board of Directors approved a resolution expressing gratitude to Mr. Kellogg
for his remarkable leadership. Moffett Cochran assumed the role of chairman from him and
Mark Pirrung was elected vice chairman at the same time.
At its core the Foundation remains focused on its mission of attracting some of the
world’s most talented leaders and scholars to the University. Both the undergraduate
and graduate selection processes again produced outstanding results. The undergraduate
competition was especially rigorous. We received a record 1,226 nominations, due primarily
to the addition of three new selection regions (Rhode Island, Mississippi, and the United
Kingdom) and the decision to accept two nominations from those participating schools
that felt they had two worthy candidates. The 101 finalists, who hailed from all over the
world, congregated in Charlottesville on the weekend of March 26-28. As a result of these
deliberations, 27 remarkably talented individuals from 13 states and 3 foreign countries will
compose our 30th entering undergraduate class.
our new building
provides jefferson
fellows with ample
space for teaching and
research and permits
the foundation to
sponsor a variety of
activities for the
university community
that only could be
imagined before.
Fifty-six finalists in our graduate competition (another new record) from 21 different
departments of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, the Darden School, and the Law
School spent the weekend of February 18-20 in Charlottesville. The entering class will
include five recipients from the College and one from the Darden School. For the first
time the Foundation conducted a dissertation year fellowship competition to identify a
current Ph.D. candidate in the College whose academic record is exceptional and who
has demonstrated an unusual eagerness to share knowledge with a broad audience. We are
pleased that the Foundation’s first recipient of the Dissertation Year Fellowship will join our
community of Scholars and Fellows for the 2010-11 year.

leadership
The record of achievement written by the enrolled Scholars and Fellows continues to
make us proud. The 2010 graduating class included 15 members selected to live on the
Lawn, the chair and a vice chair of the Honor Committee, the student representative
to the Board of Visitors, the recipient of the Ernest H. Ern Outstanding Student award,
the president of the Student Council, the president of the Inter-Fraternity Council, the
Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award recipient, and the president of the Class of 2010. Among
WHEREAS, in accepting chairmanship of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation Richard
C. Kellogg Jr. set out to achieve dual objectives of improving the Foundation’s governance
and building the Foundation’s new home, and
WHEREAS, under Rick’s untiring leadership the Foundation has effected an
agreement with the Alumni Association which will greatly improve the Foundation’s
governance, and
WHEREAS, as a direct result of Rick’s vision, perseverance, and commitment the
Foundation has successfully financed and built the Foundation’s new home and center
for its graduate fellows, and
WHEREAS, his vision for the Jefferson Fellows Center inspired the creation of a
physical space that will foster academic excellence and interdisciplinary conversation of
the highest order, and
WHEREAS, he has always and consistently led the Foundation with exceptional grace,
humility, and wisdom, and
WHEREAS, he has always and consistently placed the interests of the Jefferson
Scholars Foundation ahead of any competing forces or other distractions, and
WHEREAS, and foremost, he personally represents the highest ideals of leadership,
scholarship, and citizenship, now therefore the Board of Directors of the Jefferson
Scholars Foundation hereby extends to Richard C. Kellogg Jr. its enduring gratitude and
admiration for a job exceedingly well done.

jefferson scholars foundation 2010
the post-graduate honors received by the Class of 2010 were a Luce Scholarship, a Gates
Cambridge Scholarship, and a Coro Fellowship. The cumulative GPA for the class was 3.78.
The Scholars and Fellows returning to the Grounds are well positioned to continue the
legacy of achievement to which they are rightful heirs. Seven members of the Fourth-Year
Class will live on the Lawn. A chair of the Resident Staff Program, two members of the
Honor Committee, and the chair for the representative body for the Student Council are
all Jefferson Scholars. A Jefferson Fellow will serve as president of the Raven Society, and
another received a prestigious three-year pre-doctoral fellowship from the National Science
Foundation.
Another noteworthy event occurred during Final Exercises when the first recipients of the
Hartfield-Jefferson Scholars Teaching Prize were announced. Made possible by a $1 million
gift from an anonymous benefactor, the Teaching Prize recognizes and rewards faculty
members at the School of Engineering and Applied Science who have compiled a record
of outstanding undergraduate teaching. The first recipients each received a cash prize of
$12,500.
This year also saw the Foundation lose two men who meant a great deal to us. Frank
Batten Sr. was among the Foundation’s earliest benefactors, providing a named scholarship
at a critical time in our existence. His interest in our work continued vicariously through his
daughter Dorothy’s service on the Board of Directors. Norman Graebner’s death also left a
void. Professor Graebner was a devoted friend and advocate in the latter years of his life and
is the only recipient of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation Award for Excellence, granted to
him in the fall of 2006.
As the Foundation celebrates its 30th year, its future is exceedingly bright. The new
building will host several exciting events in the coming year, including the second Forum
for Interdisciplinary Dialogue and the second reunion of all Jefferson Scholar alumni.
The Jefferson Fellows Center will host teaching assistant sections led by Jefferson Fellows,
seminars led by University faculty, and lectures by invited scholars who will stimulate
intellectual discourse for the entire University community. The selection competition in
both the undergraduate and graduate programs will continue to attract to the Grounds
remarkably talented students who otherwise would not come to the University.
None of this could occur without the selfless service provided by hundreds of
volunteers who serve on our selection committees, on the National Advisory Board, on the
10

leadership
Campaign Committee, and our Board of Directors. We thank all who have helped
the Foundation reach this milestone in its history, and we invite others to join the
exciting intellectual community that will continue to bring further distinction to the
Foundation and to the University.
