To help their children, parents<br />
and caretakers need both<br />
knowledge and support.<br />
<strong>Support</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Families</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Children</strong> <strong>with</strong> <strong>Disabilities</strong> is a parent-run, San<br />
Francisco-based non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organization founded in 1982. We support families <strong>of</strong><br />
children <strong>with</strong> any kind <strong>of</strong> disability or special health care need as they face<br />
challenges. We believe that <strong>with</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation, education, and peer support, families<br />
can make in<strong>for</strong>med choices to help their children grow.<br />
<strong>Support</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Families</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers a wide range <strong>of</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation, education, and<br />
parent-to-parent support services free <strong>of</strong> charge to thousands <strong>of</strong> San Francisco<br />
families every year. <strong>Support</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Families</strong> also provides in<strong>for</strong>mation and educational<br />
services to pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who work <strong>with</strong> families, and actively collaborates <strong>with</strong><br />
other organizations to work towards a more coordinated, family-friendly network <strong>of</strong><br />
services.<br />

we had set-up in Cali<strong>for</strong>nia.<br />

contacts, helped me decipher the Medwaiver<br />
system and the Regional Center<br />

Parenting a typical child can be<br />
challenging but there is support around<br />
us in friends, family and caregivers.<br />
When a child has a disability, the<br />
natural support and in<strong>for</strong>mation from<br />
family and friends isn’t available. You<br />
may find yourself alone and scared.<br />
As a parent mentor, my reward<br />
has been long-lasting relationships<br />
based on trust, respect and love. Being<br />
available <strong>for</strong> a parent in need <strong>of</strong><br />
support, in<strong>for</strong>mation or just to listen is<br />
one <strong>of</strong> the most rewarding experiences<br />
I’ve had as a parent mentor.<br />
