The Year 6/7 classes have been busy, busy, busy!
In English all classes have been doing a novel study on
The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe. Students have
been creating their own Fantasy Kindgom’s, where they
create and design all the elements needed for a Fantasy
World. Student need to justify their choice of work by
either discussing how the Fantasy World relates to
either the Christian message, children’s appeal or the
traditional fantasy genre. Some students have created
the most amazing Fantasy Kingdoms – ask your child to
show you their work.
In SOSE classes have been studying multiculturalism in
Australian and cultures from around the world. They
have been creating calendars, researching important
dates and holidays specific to different countries.
In Math classes we have been studying angles and
geometry. We have our final math exam for the year
next Wednesday!!! Hurrah!!! However we then have an
in‐class maths assignment to complete before the end
of the year.
In HPE this term students have been developing their
knowledge of Road Safety through the creation of a
board game they can play with their peers. We have
had some really interesting submissions and the results
have been very pleasing.
News from the CHAPLAIN
We Are Made To Make A Difference
Deep down everyone wants to make a difference. But it is difficult for students to
see past their own issues, problems and distractions to see that their lives can
count right now. I have been spending time in classes and Chapel services
encouraging this generation of young people to look beyond themselves and to
really see some of the needs within our community (local, national and global).
By showing how other young people around the world have been moved by
compassion and taken action, I hope to inspire our young people at Riverside
Christian College to do the same.
As a part of class discussions the idea that poverty is a priority has been explored
and how there is such a huge need in the world around us. The problem can seem
too large for us to make a difference, and we can often spend time talking about
the issues but never get around to taking action. Well, this Term I have been
surprised by a group of students who, after talking about the issue of poverty
made a decision to take action. The Year 10 boys have all decided to take action together and sponsor a child
through Compassion Australia. The very next day students began to bring in money, a dollar at a time, and by
the end of 7 days they had raised enough funds to support a child for 2 months!
This kind of action, born out of compassion, is something that really excites me. We are seeing young people
beginning to look beyond themselves and taking action to make a difference in the life of a total stranger.
“There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be open handed toward your
brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land” Deuteronomy 15:11
“If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of
God be in him Dear Children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”
DANCE from Mrs Desiree McGann
Riverside Dance Crew did a wonderful job at L.A.D Studio dance
concert. Performing to over 500 audience members they stole the
show, with their solos and duos. Lachlan (Hip Hop) Taila Brown (Jazz)
Jenna Johnson (Jazz) performed awesome solos, and the crowd loved
the fun filled routine choreographed and performed by Taylor Snell &
Sheridan Long.
The Riverside Dance team performed the award winning
Contemporary dance –Little Suzie and the up beat Jazz routine.
The team will perform again this Sunday in Hervey Bay Scarness
beach (across from Beach House Hotel) in the DAY OF DANCE
FESTIVAL. Come down and support the dance team.
STRINGS from Ms Katie Marshall
This semester has been a busy one for the Strings Department.
We finished Term 3 off with a combined Maryborough Schools
Music Tour with Aldridge State High School. Both schools’ string
ensembles joined with the Aldridge Concert Band to create one
big orchestra. We rocked the stage at three different schools with
Glee Highlights, Best of Green Day, J‐Lo’s Let’s Get Loud, Grease
Highlights, Santana’s Smooth and Lady Gaga’s most famous hit
Born This Way.
We then kicked off Term 4 in a similar fashion touring down the
coast. We were musically inspired by Griffith Conservatorium of
Music University students as they played a Jazz Lunchtime concert
which was fantastic. We then went on to Sunshine Coast and
performed for Nambour townfolk in the bustling Town Square.
The following week, both Beth and Bek passed with flying colours
after sitting their AMEB practical violin exam in Buderim at
Matthew Flinders College. Well done girls!
In the last week of October, Rebekah attended the Australian
Chamber Orchestra concert in Bundaberg. After an entire day of
practicing with the ACO members, the string ensemble performed
Corelli’s three movement Christmas Concerto and Edvard Grieg’s
entire Holberg Suite conductor‐less for their friends and family in
the afternoon. The technical workshop helped the students work
and play together and really listen to each other as the main
principle of a chamber group is to play without a conductor.
Our Strings department is now working hard towards the Year 12
Valedictory breakfast, Nine Lessons, Carols by Candlelight and the
Junior Celebrates Award Night in December. The Junior Celebrates
performance will showcase the Dal Segno Young Ensemble playing
in unison and harmonising with different parts. The students are
relatively new to this concept as they have not been exposed to
this aspect of working together and performing like this before.
The Awards Night will also mark our beginner strings ensemble
The Stringles playing for an audience for the first time, so please
give them a warm welcome.
Practice hard and perform at your best always,
This weeks Solar eclipse …..
6.39am Wednesday, Cairns time Far North
Queensland was lucky enough to have a
birds eye view of a total solar eclipse.
Although total solar eclipses happen about
once every 18 months on earth, they
rarely can be viewed from land so this
weeks event was very exciting and quite
special.
Effectively a total solar eclipse occurs
when the light from the Sun is completely
blocked by the moon, casting a dark
shadow onto Earth as shown by the
picture below.
As the sun disappears , the moons shadow arrives , causing the
whole sky to go black. During totality , when the Suns bright
surface is
completely
obscured , the
Moon appears
as a black hole in
the sky outlined
by the Suns
softly glowing
white corona ,
the Suns outer
atmosphere.
The next
sightings of a
total eclipse in
Australia is
shown on the
map. So mark
your calendars.
Chewing gum is NOT permitted
on the College grounds.
This year we have students and staff who suffer from
allergies and they must be very careful not to come into
contact with certain foods. Therefore we request that where
possible, the following foods: Eggs, Peanuts and Seafood
be avoided at the College.
We value the well-being of each one in
our Riverside community, let’s make the
WASTE MANAGEMENT AT RIVERSIDE
Riverside students are asked to put their rubbish in
different bins in order for the College to better
manage our waste. 3 bins are available in eating
areas ‐ yellow top recycle bins (like the ones at home),
red top bins for garbage that can't be reused or
recycled, and small green top bins for food waste that
can be composted. Our aim is to decrease our
'landfill' rubbish by 1/3, simply by recycling and
composting.
Please encourage your child/ren to put their
rubbish in the correct bins.
Please ensure that correct money is placed in all
payment envelopes. The College does not keep cash
on the premises and
our ability to give
change is limited.
If correct money is
not provided, it may
be necessary to
credit any
overpayment to your
fees account.
Multi‐Purpose Hall
Reminder that the Hall equipment room is
completely out of bounds to all students
unless you have permission from a teacher.
Also, remember food and drink does not
come into the Hall at all and we do not enter
the Hall for lunchtimes and HPE classes
unless a teacher is present.
ACCOUNTS OVERDUE
Please note that all accounts must
be PAID IN FULL
No later than Thursday 6 December.
Enrolment for 2013 is conditional
upon all outstanding fees being paid.
If you are suffering financial
difficulties, please contact Janita to
discuss how we can assist.
Disability Parking
We do have parents that
require the disability car
parking provided at Riverside. Please
be kind and reserve the designated
parks for them, thank you.
In the interest of safety, please park your car to drop off
your children, do not pull up on the main thoroughfare
and let them out.
EXCURSION & UNIFORM PAYMENTS
Payments for Excursions and for Uniforms cannot be taken
from Fees Account Credit. I do understand that sometimes
parents have credit in their fees account, however our
banking accounts for Excursions and Uniforms are
different to our Fees Accounts. We are unable to transfer
money from one account to another.
Please note that students cannot attend excursions unless
full payment is made by the due date given on their
excursion letter.
Class Lists for 2013
It is important for the College to have a transparent process
for compiling class lists for each new year. The compilation
of class lists is not a quick or easy exercise and much time,
thought and prayer is put into the process.
It is understandable that families have a lot invested in
which class they prefer. The College acknowledges that
parents know their children best, in non‐school contexts,
and respect the insights parents may have in relation to
placement of their children. This procedure gives an
opportunity for parents to share these insights with the
College so that they may be considered when classes are
formed.
PROCEDURE
A. Parents are notified via the newsletter in that class lists are
being compiled. If parents desire to have input into the
compilation process, they may do so in writing to the
Head of College, no later than Week 7 of Term 4.
B. Current teachers of students advise Head of College about:
1. general academic ability
2. behavioural patterns
3. social groupings
C. EdZone (Education Support Unit) provides input to Head of College
D. The strengths and input of the potential next year’s teachers
are considered
E. The Head of College, in consultation with staff, compiles class
lists whilst giving full consideration to class numbers, gender
balance, behavioural demands, parent insights, general
ability, social needs, timetabling and the like.
F. Lists are displayed at the College the workday before Term 1
begins.
G. The lists as published are final.
H. The Principal is the only person in the College who may, in
exceptional circumstances, alter the class allocations after
lists are published.
