Carol Deal, Executive Director, Surgical Services 

Deal, who has been with PRMC since 1995, was 

recognized for exceeding her goals, being a fair, 

equitable and driven leader who accepts 

responsibilities and brings proactive solutions to her 

issues. Deal was also recognized for her leadership of 

the ongoing operating room expansion project. 

Roger Follebout, Jr., Director, Community Relations 

Follebout, a member of the PRMC family since 1998, 

was recognized for his leadership in dramatically 

improving community and media relations during his 

tenure as Director, which began in August of 2009.

1st Place Clinical (Tie) 

Late Preterm Infant Initiative 

The team was recognized for reducing the percentage of 

Neonatal ICU admissions and Pediatric readmissions for late 

preterm infants (between 34 & 36.6 weeks). After process 

changes using evidenced-based education and clinical 

guidelines, Neonatal ICU admissions were reduced from 33% 

to 22% and a readmission rate to Pediatrics was reduced 

from 11% to 0% within 10 days of birth. 

Ventilator Associated Pneumonia Reduction 

The team was recognized for reducing Ventilator 

Associated Pneumonia, one of the most common infections 

acquired in hospital Intensive Care Units (ICU). Using or 

reintroducing nearly 20 evidence-based care measures, the 

ICU team has achieved zero Ventilator Associated 

Pneumonias for Medical/Surgical patients in the ICU for 13 

consecutive months and counting. 

1st Place Operations 

Clinical Documentation Improvement-Acute Pulmonary 

Edema/Respiratory Failure 

The team was recognized for a change in the way Acute 

Pulmonary Edema/Respiratory Failure patients were 

documented. The inaccurate information has impacted 

PRMC’s performance rating for potentially preventable 

hospital-acquired complications. Once a new 

documentation template was created to more accurately 

reflect post-operative complications, the incidence of Acute 

Pulmonary Edema/Respiratory Failure dropped from 97% 

above expected to 12% below expected.

So here we are, around a month into a 

new year, and hopefully we’re still 

committed to most of our New Year’s 

resolutions. It’s a challenge, isn’t it Getting 

to and maintaining a state of “always” in our 

lives can be the toughest thing we have to 

do—personally and professionally. But as I 

like to remind our team, WHEN IT COMES 

TO PATIENT CARE there is no substitute for 

always. 

At Peninsula Regional Medical Center, 

our goal is to continue to weave that into 

our culture—“A Culture of Always.” As a 

healthcare team, we must ensure that we 

are doing everything we can to always get it 

right for every patient, every person, every 

time. We’re not perfect, but much of this 

journey is about learning how to improve so 

that our partnership is built on the most 

solid of foundations—trust. We trust that 

you will feel safe reaching out to us. You, in 

turn, trust us to be the partner who will 

strive to be prepared to provide the best

For instance, in a recent Premier, Inc. 

Medicare/Medicaid study, PRMC received 

Top Improvement awards in heart attack, 

heart failure and surgical care. The study 

found that the lives of 149 heart attack 

patients here were saved over the past six 

years due to the quality and reliability of our 

care. Improvements in the way we diagnose 

and rapidly treat severe sepsis has reduced 

our mortality rate in that condition alone

to heart conditions, within 90 minutes—the 

accepted gold standard—anyone 

presenting in our Emergency Department 

requiring a heart catheterization is 

receiving a cath 94% of the time within that

now, there have been ZERO Ventilator 

Associated Pneumonia cases in our ICU 

and ZERO readmissions to our Pediatric 

Unit within 10 days of birth for late-term 

babies born prematurely, resulting in a 22% 

reduction in Neonatal ICU admissions.

Gavin Stephens—Fast Response and Children’s 

National Affiliation Key In Care

Gavin Stephens is our 16-year-old son who had just 

returned from a High Adventure Boy Scout trip on July 8, 

2011 and began complaining of discomfort when he took 

deep breaths. After taking him to his pediatrician and seeing 

that the initial x-rays were clear, it was thought to have been a 

possible pulled or inflamed chest muscle due to a recent 

injury. Because Gavin, a high school sophomore at James M. 

Bennett High School in Salisbury, is very active in a variety of 

sports, anything more serious was not a concern (Gavin plays 

three sports—football, wrestling & lacrosse and participated 

in an adult triathlon in May 2011). 

Over a two-week period, Gavin increasingly complained of 

chest pain, mostly at night, and on July 24th it became so 

severe we took him to the PRMC Emergency Department at 

3:00 a.m. Once evaluated by the PRMC Emergency 

Department team (vitals and an echocardiogram were 

done), we were told Gavin had a large amount of fluid 

around his heart—a pericardial effusion, creating 

tremendous pressure on his heart. Cardiologist Steven 

Hearne, MD was called in to evaluate and confirmed Gavin’s 

condition. The fluid buildup was so severe that Dr. Hearne 

performed a pericardiocentesis in the Emergency 

Department to drain approximately 800cc’s of fluid from 

around the heart. 

Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC 

was notified and Gavin was immediately transported there, 

where he spent 6 days (3 days in ICU) for intensive testing 

and consults with medical specialists. A diagnosis was not 

found, and the cause was attributed to a virus. Gavin was

released with prescribed medications to keep the 

inflammation and fluid down, and further follow-up was 

scheduled. Gavin is fortunate that there was no permanent 

damage to his heart, or any other organs, thanks to the rapid 

response of Dr. Hearne and so many others. 

Gavin has experienced a few minor setbacks since July 

24th (a fever and some reoccurrence of fluid), and we have 

found ourselves in the PRMC Emergency Department twice 

since. I was so pleased to see the ease at which PRMC staff 

was able to connect with Children’s National staff to 

communicate quickly to provide follow-up medical care. 

Gavin is recovering and continues to work with his 

pediatrician and Children’s National specialists to determine 

the possible cause. I am so grateful for the quick response of 

the PRMC Emergency Department staff and Dr. Hearne for 

stabilizing Gavin during this very serious situation. The 

recent affiliation of PRMC with Children’s National has been 

a tremendous asset for Gavin and our family, and the 

teamwork among the various physicians has been 

outstanding. 

As a parent, you never imagine a trip in the middle of the 

night to the Emergency Department can result in the need 

for such serious medical care. We never know when 

emergencies may happen, but we’re so thankful the talented 

people and processes were in place to respond when we 

needed it. Thank you PRMC and your Emergency 

Department team! 

“They Never Gave Up On Me”—Bruce Somers 

and an Exceptional PRMC Experience 

Some of the members of the PRMC ICU and Emergency/Trauma teams

Bruce Somers of Marion Station is a pretty fortunate guy. 

He was once described by Emergency Department 

physician Clark Willis, MD, as “the patient closest to death 

that I’ve ever treated who still made it through.” 

It was June 20, 2009; Bruce Somers’ worst day, but as fate 

would have it, maybe his luckiest too, because he landed in 

the arms of a talented PRMC trauma team that simply 

refused to let him go. “People and other doctors will ask us 

when we went to Shock Trauma and we tell them never,” said 

Tanna Johnson, Bruce’s fiancé. “Everyone is amazed because

of the severity of Bruce’s injuries, but we know there’s no way 

he would have received any better care on the other side of 

the bridge or anywhere else.” 

It was in Bishopville, Maryland a little over two years ago 

now when the driver of a large box truck ran a red light. In 

the middle of that intersection, as fate would have it, was 

Bruce Somers, who was driving a smaller truck delivering a 

load of crab pots. The crash was ugly…a t-bone impact. 

Bruce arrived at PRMC by helicopter where, based on the 

critical nature of his condition as relayed by the EMS crew, 

he was designated as a Red Code trauma patient—the 

category reserved for the most critically injured trauma 

patients. Given this designation, a trauma surgeon, three 

Emergency Department physicians, Emergency Department 

nursing and tech staff, lab, and respiratory personnel were all 

awaiting his arrival. When wheeled into the trauma bay, 

Bruce had multiple obvious and visible injuries and a nearly 

amputated left arm. 

While the team was stitching, stapling, and compressing, 

x-rays were obtained and Bruce was taken to the Emergency 

Department’s CT scanner for further evaluation of his 

internal injuries. While this evaluation was in progress, Bruce 

was getting unit after unit of blood and human plasma 

through a rapid infusion machine in an attempt to correct his 

prior and continued blood loss. 

Radiology tests confirmed what doctors feared. Bruce had 

a horrific array of trauma injuries in addition to those already 

known, including bleeding around and inside the brain in 

multiple areas, extensive facial fractures, fractures of his 

neck, upper and lower back with multiple fractures in each 

site. He had also suffered a lung contusion, bleeding inside 

his chest, 10 fractured ribs, bleeding in his abdomen 

including bleeding from his right kidney and liver, multiple 

pelvic fractures and a complex right hip socket fracture. 

Such an extensive and complex degree of injuries in one 

patient is sobering to even to a seasoned trauma team like 

the one at PRMC. With game faces on, they worked feverishly 

to save Bruce’s life, but privately there was the realization 

that he was facing a very difficult challenge; one that very few 

people in his condition survive. “It was touch and go for a 

long time,” said Tanna. “We’re just so glad that everyone was 

there and knew what to do.” 

Following this evaluation, a decision was made to take 

Bruce for immediate surgery in a further attempt to stop his 

internal bleeding. Amazingly, he was still alive, and now 

considered stable enough for transport to the operating 

room. 

In the OR, Bruce had Trauma Damage Control Surgery, 

where the goal is to stop and repair major bleeding only. This 

style of trauma surgery has an emphasis on limiting the time 

a patient spends on the table and under general anesthesia, 

with minor injuries to be corrected at a later time. Bruce was 

then taken to the ICU for further stabilization. 

Bruce continued to stabilize in the ICU and returned to the 

operating room multiple times in the following days and 

weeks for various corrective surgeries. 

Bruce’s care team grew to include specialists from 

Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Ophthalmology, Plastic 

Surgery and Rehab Medicine in addition to Anesthesia and 

the Trauma Surgeon who initiated his operating room 

journey. 

Bruce would spend 43 days in PRMC’s ICU before being 

transferred to Bryn Mawr Rehab in Pennsylvania, where he 

would spend an additional 10 weeks, ultimately awakening 

from his coma. 

Bruce then transitioned to home with family support for 

extensive home care and therapy despite his inability to walk 

at that time. After a tremendous amount of effort and hard 

work, he was able to walk unassisted only six months after 

his accident. “There’s no doubt in our minds whatsoever that 

the people at PRMC gave Bruce a second chance at life,” 

added Tanna. 

Today Bruce walks, laughs and converses with surprising 

ease. He has recovered much of his former function, 

although he’s limited to lifting no more than 20 pounds, and 

is currently working on getting his driver’s license back. “I’ve 

got an ‘05 Road King, a 730-pound Harley that I’m hoping to 

get converted to a trike so I can ride again,” said Bruce. “I 

can’t do everything I could before the accident, but I feel 

good and I can’t thank everybody enough.” 

Getting “Back” to Life 

Ralph Greene takes the first ride on his Harley Davidson motorcycle since 

endoscopic spine surgery at PRMC. Joining him outside the Peninsula 

Orthopaedic Associates, P.A. office in Salisbury is orthopaedic spine 

surgeon Scott McGovern, MD. 

Passion and dedication. 68-year-old Ralph Greene of 

Nanticoke, Maryland will tell you he has both. His golf 

game—at a 30 handicap—is equal parts dedication and 

frustration. His passion, however, is his Harley, which he’s 

ridden for 53 years and in all 50 states.

Just not much the past year. 

“The pain was so severe it literally brought me to tears. I 

never left the house, canceled vacations, couldn’t drive, 

couldn’t ride the bike…I didn’t want to take a shower it hurt 

so bad,” said Ralph of the severe back, groin and leg pain that 

from October 2010 to May 2011 left him absolutely unable to 

do anything. “It was awful, I couldn’t stand it.” 

It was most likely a fall a decade ago from a ladder and an 

awkward landing that caused the bulging disc that was now 

controlling and crippling Ralph’s life. When strong pain 

medications and injections failed, he turned to orthopaedic 

spine surgeon Dr. Scott McGovern, to discuss surgical 

options. “Surgery should always be the last option for 

treating spinal disorders,” added Dr. McGovern. “Our goal is 

to provide patients with the safest, best outcomes possible, 

and for Ralph surgery was not only the last option, it was the 

absolute best option.” 

Dr. McGovern assured Ralph he was confident he could 

correct the problem and that he was a strong candidate for 

endoscopic spine surgery at Peninsula Regional Medical 


The surgery took about an hour. Ralph was awake the 

entire time under just a local anesthetic. Instead of an open, 

larger incision, Dr. McGovern inserted a specialized high 

resolution camera and customized surgical instruments 

through just one very small incision to repair Ralph’s disc 

problem. The camera allowed him to see inside the spine, 

and the instruments to fix the problem with much less stress 

on surrounding tissue and bone versus an open procedure. 

“Although certain patients will benefit more from a 

traditional surgery, minimally invasive and endoscopic 

surgery can replace most traditional open surgeries without 

being minimally effective,” said Dr. McGovern. “We’re 

fortunate at PRMC to be a forerunner in this technology.” For 

patients, that translates into less blood loss from a single, 

small incision, faster recovery, less pain and a safer surgery. 

Just six hours after arriving PRMC, Ralph was on his way 

back home to Nanticoke, and pain free. “Dr. McGovern and 

this surgery have given me my life back, no question about 

it,” added Ralph. “I’m flabbergasted. I can’t believe this has 

been so successful. Even today I expect to wake up and find 

out this isn’t real.” Next mission, getting that handicap into 

the 20’s.

Home is Where the Heart “Care” is 

John Hauswald on the beach in Ocean City, Maryland 

“You need bypass surgery. You have an abdominal 

aortic aneurysm. Both require immediate surgical 

attention.” 

That’s exactly what John Hauswald of Ocean City heard 

from his cardiologist while wintering in Florida a few years 

ago. 

John, 83 at the time, faced some tough choices. So he 

turned to someone he trusted—his daughter, Carol Wright of 

Salisbury. “Carol said my wife Elsa and I should fly home, 

have the surgery here and recuperate near her,” added John. 

“She told us Peninsula Regional Medical Center was well 

respected throughout the country as a premier, exceptional 

heart hospital. That’s all we needed to hear.” 

Cardiothoracic surgeon Nicholas Ogburn, MD performed 

quadruple bypass surgery, and a month later repaired John’s 

abdominal aortic aneurysm using minimally invasive 

techniques. “It couldn’t have been better from start to finish; 

it was excellent,” shared John. “Everyone, and I mean 

everyone, was wonderful. It might sound strange to say they 

made my heart surgery and recovery seem easy, but they 

did.” 

John says he feels great today, still plays golf and enjoys— 

now more than ever—life with Elsa including Summers in 

Ocean City, winters in Florida and a year-round healthy 

outlook thanks to the Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute 

team at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

New Hope for Delmarva Stroke Patients 

Time is of the Essence in Stroke Care—every 

passing minute after stroke symptoms appear makes 

them harder to overcome. 

More than 70% of people who display symptoms will 

suffer a stroke within 48 to 72 hours if they are not treated 

rapidly and properly with medication that works within a 

three-hour window of opportunity from the first sign of 

those symptoms. 

But a new procedure performed in the Interventional 

Radiology Department at Peninsula Regional Medical 

Center doubles that traditional three-hour window for 

treatment. Mechanical thrombectomy is a state-of-the-art, 

minimally invasive procedure that allows doctors to 

remove a blood clot up to six hours after the start of stroke 

symptoms. In mechanical clot removal, specially trained 

Interventional Radiologists guide a tiny catheter from the 

femoral artery (in the leg) to the site of the blood clot, grab 

it and remove it from the body. Blood flow resumes 

immediately, minimizing the effects of the stroke. 

Peninsula Regional is the only hospital on Delmarva 

currently performing the procedure. Peninsula Regional is 

fortunate to have three Interventional Radiologists who 

are privileged to perform this procedure. They are Michael 

Marks, MD, William Reid, MD and Andrew Vennos, MD.

Eastern Shore,” said Dr. Reid. 

The Stroke Team at Peninsula Regional treats on 

average nearly 40 patients with stroke symptoms every 

month, volumes that rival centers like Johns Hopkins in 

Baltimore and others in much larger, urban areas. 

The Primary Stroke Center at Peninsula Regional 

Medical Center is one of 17 hospitals in Maryland and the 

only hospital on the Eastern Shore to achieve and 

maintain the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval for 

certification as a Primary Stroke Center since 2006. The 

service received a “perfect score” from evaluators who 

indicated no requirements for improvement.

A Message From the 

Chairman 


It’s a great honor to be elected Chairman of a critically 

important institution such as Peninsula Regional Medical 

Center. It’s particularly a privilege to follow an 

outstanding community leader such as Dr. Ray Hoy in that 

capacity, and to serve with a group of thoughtful 

community representatives on the Board of Trustees. As 

with so many of the achievements that I’ll cite here, my 

message will speak to what others have done—not what I 

do. 

I can say without question that throughout my period of 

service on this Board that I have been impressed and 

touched by the dedication and commitment that I’ve seen 

among the executives at PRMC and among the medical 

professionals with whom I’ve served. 

It’s a challenging time in this industry with the issues of 

rate reductions, healthcare reform, new quality measures 

and the impact of a weak economy. At the same time, we 

must restate our focus on patient safety and quality care. 

While we take great pride on the quality of that care, as 

Board members we cannot and do not do the work that 

leads to the quality for which the hospital has been 

consistently recognized. Those awards and recognitions 

are the result of the outstanding work of the care team. 

The Board merely puts appropriate emphasis on quality 

care and the appropriate allocation of resources and then 

supports the staff and medical team as they implement 

continuous quality improvements. The results speak for 

themselves: 

• PRMC has been recognized with a Distinguished 

Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence by 

HealthGrades in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 placing 

the Medical Center among the top 5% in the nation. 

• In 2012, HealthGrades ranked PRMC’s cardiology 

services, stroke treatment and vascular surgery 

programs number one in the state of Maryland. 

• HealthGrades also ranked 

cardiac services, cardiology, 

stroke treatment, 

neurosciences, pulmonary 

care, vascular surgery, 

gastrointestinal care and medical treatment and 

critical care the best on Delmarva in 2012. 

• Clinical excellence awards were received in 10 

other specialties and 5-star ratings in 25 service 

lines. 

These recognitions and awards were not honors or 

prizes that the Medical Center applied for—they were 

earned by the outstanding work of our healthcare team. 

There’s so much more—PRMC’s leadership in 

technology that has been recognized as one of the 

nation’s best, the adoption of the eICU for telemonitoring 

critically ill patients, significant growth in the Peninsula 

Regional Medical Group, the operating room expansion 

which follows the major expansion represented by the 

Layfield Tower and new collaborative efforts with 

Children’s National Medical Center in Washington D.C., 

and the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network. 

PRMC is an outstanding community asset with an 

outstanding medical and administrative team leading the 

way. Our region is fortunate to have such a team always at 

their best during those times we need them most. We 

look forward to continued success and improvement in 

the months and years ahead.

Peninsula Regional Medical Center 

Foundation. Thank you to everyone who 

supported the many Foundation activities 

during the past year. Some of you joined us for 

the cancer walk for the Richard A. Henson 

Cancer Institute. Others attended the 

“Moments in the Moonlight” Gala in support 

of the operating room renovation project, and 

most recently, the Women’s Heart Health 

Luncheon and Fashion Show to raise funds for 

the Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute to 

screen for heart disease. 

Many in the community have supported the 

Foundation through gifts of gratitude for the 

care they received at PRMC or in honor of 

loved ones. Every dollar makes a difference to 

the exceptional care that PRMC provides. 

Thank you to each of you. 

I want to offer my personal thanks to the

2012 begins as another award-winning 

year for Peninsula Regional Medical 


HealthGrades, Inc., the nation’s 

leading independent healthcare ratings

its 4th consecutive Distinguished

Over the past 10 years we spent $164,699,263 for 

equipment and improvements (not including the current 

expansion project). 

In addition, our most recent expansion project, completed 

in 2009, incurred costs of $113,307,971.

HQID Finds 149 Heart Attack Patient Lives Saved 

One hundred forty-nine people survived heart attacks 

thanks to Peninsula Regional’s advancements in the treatment 

of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), according to results of 

the Hospital Quality Incentive Demonstration (HQID) project, 

a value-based purchasing initiative by the Centers for 

Medicare & Medicaid Services and Premier healthcare alliance 

that rewards hospitals for delivering high quality care in six 

clinical areas. 

Based on the results from the HQID project, Peninsula 

Regional received four awards for Top Improvement and 

Attainment in the clinical areas of AMI/Heart Attack, Heart 

Failure and Surgical Care. Because of its advancements in the 

treatment of AMI and improvements in the quality of care, the 

HQID project reported that the lives of 149 heart attack 

patients at PRMC were saved over the course of the six-year 

study. 

“Providing outstanding patient care has always been our

and President/CEO. “Our continued successes in this project, 

and nearly 150 lives saved, are a testament to our ongoing 

efforts to improve the quality of care we offer, and to provide

PRMC Named 2011 Most Wired Hospital 

Nation’s Most Wired Hospitals Make Progress in Adoption of 

Health Information Technology 

Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) was recently 

recognized as one of the nation’s Most Wired hospitals by the 

American Hospital Association’s Hospitals & Health Networks 

magazine. 

Peninsula Regional was one of just 205 American hospitals 

to win the award and was the only recipient on the Delmarva 

Peninsula. Just three Maryland hospitals were presented with 

this distinguished honor. 

The nation’s Most Wired hospitals are making progress 

towards greater health information technology (IT) adoption, 

according to Hospitals & Health Networks’ 2011 Most Wired 

Survey. As a field, hospitals are focused on expanding and 

adopting certain kinds of IT, such as computerized physician 

order entry (CPOE), to promote improved patient care and 

data collection. 

“Delivering the highest quality care at the very safest level is 

a cornerstone of our Medical Center mission,” said Ray Adkins, 

Chief Information Officer. “Being selected for recognition 

among the nation’s top digital hospitals is not only a significant 

honor but also a validation of the leadership role that 

Peninsula Regional has taken in the use of IT to support our 

goal of becoming one of America’s safest hospitals and one of 

the most accessible hospitals for our patients, staff and 

physicians.”
