FORT NEWS
The School reopened after a three
week winter break on Thursday 13th
January. The fresh and rejuvenated
children brought the much needed
warmth to the cold and freezing
the thick fog the school timing has
been rescheduled. The first period
starts from 7:45am and the breakfast
follows that. March Past practice for
THE SCINDIA SCHOOL REVIEW ’11
REVIEW ’11
MY FULBRIGHT EXCHANGE TO
SAN FRANCISCO, USA
of the school
semester
system that
the U.S. uses.
The building
block format
used in
the U.S.
was worth
appreciating.
When I say
building
block format,
I mean that
the teachers
Mr Tarun Seth with his students at Lowell High School.
have set up
a system
of learning
that relies upon and is built on prior
knowledge. For example, at Lowell
High School, a student would take an
Algebra course first. Upon completing
and passing that Algebra course, the
student would step into a Calculus or
Geometry course.
I arrived in the US on 2nd August, 2010
with excitement and enthusiasm. I wished
to fulfill several dreams like garnering
cultural experiences, getting an insight
into a global educational system and
getting to know and understand a new
set of people. I reached San Francisco,
a city of immense natural beauty and
many tourist attractions on August 7,
2010. I joined Lowell High School on
August 13 to attend their professional
development workshop.
The Principal introduced me to the
members of the faculty and I was
completely astonished to find that
the School had a very large staff. The
number of students in Lowell High
School in San Francisco is five times
more than that of The Scindia School.
The first official teaching day began on
August 16 and I found the strength of
the class more than what we have here
in Scindia.
I was assigned five classes per day. On
the first day I began with an introduction
of myself along with a brief description
of The Scindia School and the Indian
educational system. It didn’t take much
time for me to understand the academic
expectations and the students’ value
system about education at Lowell High
School and soon I adjusted to my new
school setting.
Of the several things that I got to see
and imbibe I particularly like the idea
I also noticed that the teachers in the
U.S. have autonomy to decide their
grading policy. As a teacher, I liked that
idea. After all at the end of a semester
with a particular group of students,
it is the teacher alone who knows the
abilities and the deficiencies of those
students. Hence the teacher should
independently declare the final grade of
his/her students.
I think, students were drawn to me when
they saw that I had a keen interest in
them and their struggles with school life
and Math. The students of Lowell High
School were disciplined and diligent
with an inclination to work hard at their
academics. Still, being youngsters they
try to cope with the typical challenges
that are natural with teenage learners.
My aim was to provide my students
with the best mathematical education
that I could offer. I fused the US and
Indian ways of teaching together. After
I implemented this combination of
methods in my presentations, I saw that
I was getting wonderful results. The
students used calculators for simple
arithmetic problems. Although that
is probably acceptable, I encouraged
them to perform calculations manually
along with occasional use of calculator.
I explained that working arithmetical
calculations manually would help in
the development of their thinking skills
and build brainpower. I gave them some
tips about ancient Vedic mathematical
techniques for performing faster
arithmetic calculations.
I got an exposure to a variety of cultures
in San Francisco. The population
in the city by the bay is made up of
North Americans, that being people
from Mexico, the United States and
Canada. San Francisco is also called
home for many Chinese immigrants as
well as China born U.S. citizens. Many
people from Europe also live in the San
Francisco bay area. I have made friends
with many people from many different
walks of life and I hope that these
friendships will remain forever.
I visited the stupendous Golden Gate
bridge, China town, Pier 39 and Napa
Valley. I also enjoyed an air show
performed by The Blue Angels, and I
went to a music festival and enjoyed
listening to a funk and blues band. I
went beyond San Francisco to see
several places. I also flew to Boston
where I attended a Fulbright workshop.
During my stay in Boston, I had the
opportunity to visit Harvard and M.I.T.
that was a math teacher’s dream come
true.
I am grateful to have been given the
chance by the Scindia School Principal
Mr Samik Ghosh and the Fulbright
Foundation to change places with a
US teacher Ms Laura Telep for half
of a school year in order to grow
professionally and personally. I want
to extend my sincere thank to the Vice
Principal Mr Jayant Tengshe, HOD
Mathematics Mr Dhirendra Sharma
and ICT head Mr Raj Kumar Kapoor
for their continuous help and support
during my selection process.
By glancing at the title of the article you
must have been reminded of Spiderman,
Superman or may be Batman. They are
the epitome of power, goodness and
can you guess why
Is it just because they’ve got supernatural
powers NO. If you have seen serials,
cartoons or movies based on them just
reflect on them deeply and you’ll get
the answer. They stand for justice, for
truth, for love, for the people. Many of
us would have secretly wished to be a
superhero or maybe Spiderman at some
point of time. But the truth is that there
is a superhero hidden within each of us.
We only need to know him well and
awaken him.
album which has ten tracks, includes
almost every prime genre of music
Now you would ask me how to do so.
To this my answer is that the only path
is knowledge. The day you can sieve out
right from wrong, the day you choose
the path of honesty and justice for your
self you’ll feel the superhero within you.
Guide yourself through reasons and
knowledge. One must at all cost stay
away from fanaticism and superstition.
The need is to aspire not just for the
supernatural powers of a superhero
but also to inculcate his superhuman
qualities within you.
In the end I would like to say in the
pursuit of justice and truth, your courage
may fail you at times but if you can
conquer your fears you’re a superhero
LETTER TO
THE EDITOR
Dear Ma’am,
Samik Ghosh
Principal
A very happy new year to the entire
Scindian community. I passed out
in the year 2005 from Jayaji house
and after finishing my course in
Petroleum Engineering, I am working
as an Applied Petroleum Engineer in a
country called Georgia. My work takes
me all over Eastern Europe. I have come
to realise that this job would appeal to
a lot of Scindians who are thinking
about pursuing classical engineering
as a vocation. Each and every Scindian
develops a love for the outdoors during
his stint at the Fort. We are adventurous
in spirit and my job presents such
challenges and thrills on a daily basis.
We work in extreme conditions, drilling
at times up to 4 kms to discover oil.
It would be my pleasure if I can guide
and help any such individual who would
want to earn laurels in my line of work.
I am in touch with a few other Scindians
who are working in the oil patch and it
is our desire to see Scindians excel in
the Oil and Gas sector. I would love to
correspond with young Scindians and
open up new vistas for the students of
my alma-mater.
Dear Sir,
LETTER TO THE PRINCIPAL
We have lost yet another of one of our
finest teachers whom I had all respect
for.
To me Late Mr GK Kapoor was a
wonderful teacher who later was also an
educationist visionary, pardon me if I am
wrong. He followed on from teaching in
Scindia to teach in Birla Vidya Niketan
Delhi, associated with link programs
with Delhi Public School and the late Sir
Gujarmal Modi School trust where he, I
think, was also their Secretary General /
Advisor for a considerable time.
I am, I would say, fortunate that my
interaction with him was revived in a
professional capacity in 1997, a good
twenty one years after passing out from
Scindia -when I resettled in Delhi from
Calcutta. This was during an assignment
with British Council and Mr Kapoor
was happy that firstly I had progressed
in life, had a family of my own and
secondly was with an international
Institutional career organisation back
drop that he much envied and respected
me for. It was a great feeling to receive
this compliment from him.
Early last year I spoke to him after having
left British Council and shared that I
was aiming and proposing to establish
a new institution project in Palampur
HP with the State Government. This
was to be in collaboration with the
prestigious Bharitya Vidya Bhavan
School Trust and the corporate sector.
Mr Kapoor applauded this and said he
was happy that atleast there is one old
student of his from Gwalior he could be
proud of -whose Physics may not have
been the brightest but atleast he had the
Mr G.K. Kapoor
Obituary
knowledge and tenacity to set up an
Institution.
Lately I and my family are perhaps one
of the few recipients to receive on 24
Dec 2010 - a New Year cum Christmas
greeting card from him duly signed all
across with his usual initials. On receipt
of this greeting my wife and I called
and thanked him and I mischievously
mentioned that only three old teaching
vanguards of my 1968 - 76 , nine year
era at Scindia School, The 3 K’s are
yet marching on to 2011, Kapoor,
Khar and Khan. (Little did I know
that he would be gone in a fortnight's
time) He corrected me promptly to
add Mr Bharadwaj's name on this list
and provided me with his residential
telephone number. He spoke to me
nostalgically of his wonderful days on
the Fort with his compatriots Late Mr
Sharief Ahmed and Mr BK Singh and
their recent passing away and also of a
very recent wedding that Kapoor Saheb
attended in Noida of Javed Ahmed the
youngest son of late Khalil Ahmed our
old horse riding teacher.
Neverthless - it is nice sharing with
you as it only seems just more than a
fortnight or so back that I last spoke to
him. In the end as all leave including the
greatest Mr Kapoor, the fundamental
Physics and the method he applied to
teach remains on to be passed by us and
on to our next generation .
May Mrs Kapoor and our school friends
Atul and Mukul receive solace from the
Almighty at this irrepairable loss .
The entire Scindia fraternity mourns the sad demise of Mr G.K.
Kapoor (former House Master Jeevaji House, former HOD Physics)
who left for his heavenly abode on 12th January. May God grant
peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved
family to bear the loss.
We also mourn the passing away of Mr Jojo Pragya
Gautam who breathed his last on 26th Dec 2010. He was a talented
sculptor who will always be remembered for his beautiful art work.
The entire Scindia community stands by the family in this hour of grief.
The entire school wa shocked to hear about the sad and untimely
demise of Mr Ambrish Pathak (former faculty of Social Sciences)
who passed away on Saturday, 22nd January in a road accident. He
had served in the School for two years. May God give strength to the
family to bear this irreparable loss.
over 25th and 26th January.
In the afternoon the Social Service
League organized Shramjeevi sports
for the Class IV employees. All
the shramjeevis enthusiastically
participated in the various events like
races, slow and fast cycling, needle
and thread race for the ladies, kabaddi
and tug-of-war. Principal Mr Samik
Ghosh complemented them for their
active participation and awarded
prizes to the winners.
I was very angry with my mother
because she always forces me to eat what
she thinks is healthy, nutritious food but
which I find so boring. Sometimes her
commanding voice and warnings irritate
me so much that I start crying. That’s
what happened today when she asked
me to eat ‘aloo muttur’
which I totally dislike.
Who in the world cooks
‘aloo muttur’ for lunch I
fought with her and barged
into my room. There I
started crying and soon fell
fast asleep.
No sooner had I fallen
asleep than I began to
dream of the things which
I’ve always wanted in my
life. I was in a city called
the ‘City of Joy’. There
were windows in our
stomachs through which
we could put the food
inside. There were doors
on our head through which
we could put the lessons
in instead of memorizing
them. The life was very
good. I was the richest
person in the ‘City of
Joy’ because I didn’t
have to learn anything
and things got into my
mind effortlessly. I would
always come first in my
class. Whenever I wanted some thing I
would get it.
We were also taught magic through
which we could clean our rooms very
easily. We could eat whatever we
wanted. There was no school uniform
and we could wear whatever we wanted.
Such a comfortable and carefree life
made me very happy. All tests were
open book tests and I often got the
highest grade. I felt very lucky as I got
the best of everything be it the clothes
that I wore or the house where I stayed.
I also had animals which could talk. My
favourite animal was a squirrel. I used
to share everything with her. I enjoyed
My Dream
a lot in the ‘City of Joy’. So much that
I did not even miss my mother. I had a
personal bank account too which was
always full of money. Soon I became
proud and would often tease others
more so because there was no one to
stop or scold me.
Everything had become very simple for
me. Whenever I wanted I could go for
a world tour and the best part was that
I did not miss my studies at all because
as soon as I would return from my trips
there were chapters lying on my study
and classroom tables. I had to just use
the key to open the doors of my brain
and put the lessons inside. The only
thing I resented was that there were
keys for the door and the window of our
brain and stomach and we had to take
care of them because if we lost them we
couldn’t get a duplicate one.
Then one day I lost the keys of my brain’s
door and stomach’s window. From that
day I had to always eat everything and
learn everything. This irritated me a lot.
But what could I do. After I lost my keys
the rules of the city seemed very stupid
to me. There was also a rule that said
that if you get angry for more than three
days then you would lose your magic as
it was the ‘City of Joy’.
As ill luck would have
it the same happened
with me because I was
angry about losing the
keys and my anger
lasted for more than
three days. One day
when I was bursting
with anger Harry Potter
who lived in the same
city came and started
teasing me saying that
he had all the magic
and I didn’t. I felt like
kicking him.
The next day I saw a
boy who was sitting in
a corner and crying. I
went to him and asked
what the matter was. He
replied that he and his
friends could not enjoy
the taste of food as they
consumed everything
through a window.
Moreover whenever
they got a certificate or
came first in the class
they could never really celebrate the
success as it had not been truly earned
by them through hard work and effort.
That day I felt really happy to have lost
the keys. I had learnt my lesson and
knew that henceforth I would never take
a shortcut to achieve anything.
“Sukanya, wake up. This is not the time
to sleep” suddenly I heard someone
say. I woke up and realized that I had
been dreaming everything. I hugged my
mother and told her all about my dream.
She burst out laughing and I promised
myself that I will start working hard and
eat every thing.
