Tell us about ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> your <strong><strong>in</strong>vention</strong>s.<br />
I made an electric shoe. That was a favorite <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
As I walked, I could generate enough power to regenerate<br />
my mobile phone battery <strong>in</strong> a pouch by<br />
my shoe. So my phone was always powered. The<br />
trouble is that after 9/11 anyone with wir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
shoe looks like a terrorist, so I had to give it <strong>up</strong>.<br />

I also created some 300 products for disabled people.<br />
They were called Orange Aids.<br />
If you had to s<strong>in</strong>gle out an <strong><strong>in</strong>vention</strong> that you<br />
particularly admire, what would it be<br />
The jet eng<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>in</strong>vented by Frank Whittle <strong>in</strong> 1930.<br />
He was ignored by everyone at <strong>the</strong> time, but with<br />
determ<strong>in</strong>ation he formed his own company and<br />
filed patents. (He received a first patent, much delayed<br />
by <strong>the</strong> U.K. Air M<strong>in</strong>istry, <strong>in</strong> October 1932.) The<br />
Germans picked <strong>up</strong> on it and had <strong>the</strong> first jet planes<br />
<strong>in</strong> 1941. Brita<strong>in</strong> could have had <strong>the</strong>m much earlier,<br />
if we had listened to <strong>the</strong> 21-year-old Frank Whittle.<br />
Are <strong>the</strong>re areas to<strong>day</strong> that you feel are cry<strong>in</strong>g<br />
out for <strong>in</strong>novative ideas<br />
Climate change is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> biggest problems. We<br />
have to f<strong>in</strong>d a way to stop <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> pollution.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> health area, we are a stone’s throw away<br />
from f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g a cure for cancer. We just need <strong>the</strong><br />
right creative m<strong>in</strong>ds work<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> problems. But<br />
let’s also not forget <strong>the</strong> fun factor <strong>in</strong> every <strong>day</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
There’s always loads <strong>of</strong> room for fun <strong><strong>in</strong>vention</strong>s<br />
like <strong>the</strong> television.<br />
What does <strong>in</strong>tellectual property (IP) mean for you<br />
Well, nobody pays you for a good idea. IP rights are<br />
<strong>the</strong> only th<strong>in</strong>g that give you value on your knowledge.<br />
Without IP, <strong>the</strong> economy would suffer.<br />
Without it, don’t <strong>in</strong>vent. Why bo<strong>the</strong>r<br />
What advice would you give someone who has<br />
an idea for an <strong><strong>in</strong>vention</strong><br />
Don’t go down to <strong>the</strong> pub and tell everybody about<br />
it! Do someth<strong>in</strong>g about it, o<strong>the</strong>rwise you will regret<br />
it for <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> your life!<br />
In Africa alone HIV/AIDS has left over 14 million orphans. Radio, an essential<br />
means to educate and <strong>in</strong>form people on <strong>the</strong> virus, does not reach many rural<br />
communities because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> electricity and batteries.<br />
What do you see as <strong>the</strong> greatest difficulty faced<br />
by small <strong>in</strong>ventors<br />
The cost! Lawyers are <strong>the</strong> biggest problem that <strong>in</strong>ventors<br />
have, because <strong>the</strong>y charge <strong>the</strong>m so much to<br />
file a patent, to translate <strong>the</strong> application and so on.<br />
We’ve also got to reduce <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> litigation.<br />
Is <strong>the</strong>re more that IP <strong>of</strong>fices could do to s<strong>up</strong>port<br />
small <strong>in</strong>ventors<br />
We’ve got to make sure that any outfit that purports<br />
to help <strong>in</strong>ventors behaves under strict laws – br<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a decency factor <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> equation. There are so<br />
many predators out <strong>the</strong>re. Anyone want<strong>in</strong>g to know<br />
about your <strong><strong>in</strong>vention</strong> must be made to sign a nondisclosure<br />
agreement. If <strong>the</strong>y don’t, <strong>the</strong>n don’t show<br />
<strong>the</strong>m your product. If you are go<strong>in</strong>g to show your<br />
product to a large company, take a lawyer.<br />
National governments need to stick beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>ventors.<br />
If a patent is stolen <strong>in</strong> a far away country, how<br />
can a small <strong>in</strong>ventor know about it Or do anyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
about it They can’t afford to fight <strong>the</strong> big companies.<br />
National economies depend on <strong>in</strong>novation<br />
and <strong><strong>in</strong>vention</strong>s, so governments should be prepared<br />
to get <strong>in</strong>volved and back <strong>up</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>ventors.<br />
