From visual inspection of the SMSB, it is established that the switchboard provides three phase power
to the main distribution board (MDB) located in the control room. Three phase power is reticulated
from the MDB to three distribution boards located in the control office, cafe and cavern respectively. At
the time of inspection, the SMSB is considered to be in reasonable operating condition.
Key issues:
• Data logging is required for the existing distribution boards and MDB to determine the
maximum demand consume by each board.
• Distribution boards and MDB appear old and require to be replaced. This includes
replacement of all final circuits cabling.
• Capacity of existing Western Power transformer may be insufficient for the new maximum
demand. This will require for an investigation during detailed design phase.
Impact of Potential Works:
• Replacement of distribution boards, MDB and cabling works should be conducted during the
site’s off-peak season to minimise disruption to event schedules.
2.8 Fire
Presently, the facility’s fire fighting means consist of fire extinguishers strategically placed throughout
the amphitheatre. Fire extinguishers are located in the office, kitchen, communications and lighting
room and the lower staging area.
There are no hydrant points located on or near the facility. However, it is possible for a Fire Tender
access the facility through either the upper and lower access roads from Oceanic Drive.
In order to bring the Quarry Amphitheatre up to current BCA and ABCB fire performance standards it
would be expected that a minimum of 2 new fire hydrants are introduced at the facility. It is anticipated
that the hydrant supply would be from the existing water main within Oceanic Drive. The new
hydrants would need to connect via a new and separate 100mm pipeline from the roadside connection
point to suitable positions located outside the proposed café and the existing lower staging area. A
pressure test will be required to ensure sufficient pressure and flow exists within the Water
Corporation main. This approach is compliant with the application provision EP1.3 (BCA) which
applies to buildings located in an area serviced by a fire brigades.
2.6 Telecommunications
The site is currently served by telecommunication provider, Telstra with the incoming communication
pit situated adjacent to the SMSB.
From DBYD information and visual inspection there is a 10 pair incoming copper terminated at the
site’s main distribution frame (MDF), located in the office block. In addition, it is noted that the internet
access for the site is reticulated via a microwave link received by a microwave tower situated on the
hill behind the building.
Key issues:
• Possible upgrade to incoming Telstra supply to suit new site requirements.
Impact of Potential Works:
• Upgrade of Telstra cabling works should be conducted during the site’s off-peak season to
minimise disruption to event schedules.
2.7 Other Electrical Services
The following documents further electrical services issues noted during the site inspection
• It appears to be no occupant warning system installed within the existing facility. The current
system uses the PA system to warn patrons in an event of a fire. From initial investigation, the
building has a class 9 BCA classification (building of a public nature) and based on this
assessment occupancy warning system is required. Further consultation with a BCA
consultant and investigation during detailed design phase will be required to establish a
sufficient fire evacuation system.
• Bollard road and path lights appear old and may require refurbishment/replacement. Capacity
of the existing street lighting may be insufficient should there be an upgrade to the incoming
roadway to the car park. This will affect the overall maximum demand of the site and requires
further investigation during detailed design phase to comply with the relevant Australian
Standards in particular AS1158.
