Young
Athletes
Academy
After over 40 years at the forefront of British middle distance
running, the British Milers’ Club started a new section in
2005 which is specifically aimed at young athletes aged
under 20 years of age.
The ‘BMC Academy,’ will act as a stepping stone to the full
membership of the BMC. This will be limited to athletes who
have run a qualifying time appropriate to their age group
(see standards opposite). To qualify for full BMC membership
an athlete will still have to run the appropriate time standard as a senior.
BMC athletes take on the
‘Big Dipper’ at Merthyr Mawr
For the 400m/800m type of athlete who lacks middle distance experience, we now have an entry
standard based on 400m times for U17s, with a corresponding 300m standard for U15 women.
Please note that we are not branching out to be a sprint club though! These athletes will always
be encouraged to improve their times over the longer bona fide distances through improving their
speed over the shorter distances. For the cross-country specialists or endurance based athletes,
qualification can be gained via the 3000m entry standard.
All qualified coaches are invited to join the BMC, where they will be helped and supported and
education of coaches is one of our main targets. Coaches, like athletes, whether members or
not, are always welcome at all of our events where credits can be gained towards their UK-A
licence renewal.
Building on the BMC’s highly successful racing
programme, which includes meetings like our famous
Millfield PB Classic, we will be providing the young
athletes with quality competition focused on the needs of
the athlete with the opportunity to run fast times and
PBs! These competition opportunities will be available
for young athletes of all abilities. We will also continue to
offer and extend our programme of training events
including our popular national training weekend courses
and also endeavour to deliver regional training days in
every hub in England.
The BMC Academy is an exciting investment in the
future of British distance running and is sponsored by
NIKE with additional support from SPORTSMATCH
funding.
