Bishop Ullathorne and 6-0 against Sidney Stringer. The team is beginning to gel and have the potential to become successful & be one of the best Football teams at Whitley. Football This year Whitley Academy took over the running of the city wide football leagues to try and improve the number of games that students would play. This impact saw most year groups having 4 or 5 games in the first half term with varying degree’s of success. With the knowledge of having more games numbers flourished at training as we started to get over 30 students to the session, with another 25 attending the year 7 training on a Monday. In the upper school the year 10’s and 11’s have been working hard to improve their technical ability and work to different formations. Despite not winning any games both teams have played well in several games and have played the teams who we would consider stronger across the city. For the year 11’s we have had some excellent performances form Nathan McGarrity, Jack Wilkins and Toby Fanning during his spell in goal!! In the year 10’s Joe downing has played especially well in the centre of midfield with Lewis Wake putting in some strong performances in goal. Tom Neenan a year 9 student has also played well for the year 10’s in the centre of defence (a position none of the year 10’s like to play!!) Our Year 9 team have had a very pleasing start to this year’s fixture’s, defeating a strong Cardinal Wiseman team 1-0; President Kennedy 3-0 and a 4-4 draw against Finham. With the team high on confidence at not losing a match since they were in Year 7, a very strong Bishop Ullathorne team who had no less than 4 Coventry City Academy player’s proved to be a step to far for Whitley losing the match 3-0. The whole team have continued to perform well, in particular Darnell Young; Donovan Dube & Reece Snape for their strong and consistent performances in all four games. The year 8 boys football team have completed three fixtures so far against Finham Park, President Kennedy and Bishop Ullathorne. Despite some good play the boys have lost all three games so far. The team have struggled for players this year which is a shame as they have the potential to do really well. We hope to see some more year 8’s at training in the future. Our newest team at Whitley the Year 7’s have shown great attitude to training which takes place on Monday’s, where we’ve consistently had 25 pupils attending on a regular basis. In terms of fixtures, they have had some very difficult matches starting with two defeats against a strong Finham team losing 8-0 & President Kennedy 3-1. The last two games were more successful with them winning 8-4 against Basketball The year 9 boys basketball team played a home fixture against Stoke Park on Wednesday 23 rd November. The game was closely contested with Whitley Academy leading 6-2 at half time thanks to a basket from Josh Brown and two from Corey Jay Woollaston. Stoke Park came out strong in the second half and led 10-6 with less than five minutes to go, baskets from Lee Little and Connor Sanderson levelled the scores at 10-10. It looked like the game was heading for an honourable draw until Connor Sanderson scored his second basket of the game with 6 seconds remaining to win the game for Whitley Academy 12-10. All of the lads that played did a great job and deserved their win. It was also great to see a new player for the school in Dalton Bellamy. Clubs This year we have once again had improved numbers to clubs for boys PE. Football has been a huge success at the start of the year, and we have had many new faces turning up. We have also introduced break time and lunch time clubs for students to attend. These have been hugely popular (especially on the rainy days!!) and has given the students a chance to take part In table tennis, basketball, trampolining and badminton. Boys and girls after school basketball clubs have been running since the start of the school year on a Wednesday and Thursday night. The number of pupils attending has increased steadily throughout the year. Pupils have developed their basic basketball skills well as well as improving their teamwork through game play fixtures are currently being arranged to test the players against other students in Coventry. Trips There are two huge trips being run by the PE department in the new year and all those going on them are hugely excited (including the staff). The first trip to leave will be the ski trip to the French resort of Alp D’huez. Students will be flying into France and then after a short coach journey will arrive in the beautiful resort. Students will get to spend 6 days on the slopes with tuition and as we are able to take 2 x alpine ski leaders with us will get much longer on the slopes than any of the other schools going! The ski trip is always a fantastic, enjoyable and tiring event for everyone and will be no different this year. We wish them well as they set off in the new year
We also have the Barcelona football trip running in Easter, with the excitement of a Barcelona home game (Provided the Champions league allows!) 30 student will be cleaning and polishing their boots donning the new Whitley football kit and taking on the mighty Barcelona (local schools!!)The trip will also give students the chance to see some amazing architecture, mesmerising street performers and a brilliantly vibrant city. All involved are looking forward to it especially the 36 hour coach ride!!
