Dr. Harold S. Wood Award for Excellence, also in the<br />

amount of $1,000.00. Todiwalla received the scholarship at<br />

the National Intercollegiate Flying Association Safety and<br />

Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) 2013 at Ohio<br />

State University Airport in Columbus, Ohio. Todiwalla is<br />

co-captain of the university’s flight team and holds his Private<br />

Pilot Certificate. He developed a safety reporting system for<br />

Lewis University’s flight department that allows students and<br />

instructors to fill out a “report sheet” after any safety incident.<br />

That information is then used in a newsletter outlining safety<br />

problems at the university and providing tips on everyday<br />

flying.<br />

The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA)<br />

represents the interest of general aviation manufacturers and<br />

the general aviation community. Former USAF F-15 fighter<br />

pilot and administrator, Pete Bunce of Milwaukee, Wisconsin,<br />

<strong>Midwest</strong> Students Compete & Win In International Art Contest<br />

More than 5,000 students from 28 states submitted their<br />

artwork for the U.S. National competition.<br />

Established in 1986, the NASAO Center for Aviation<br />

Research and Education is a nonprofit organization<br />

recognizing the vital role aviation education has assumed in<br />

our contemporary society.<br />

Sky Waters of Eagan, Minnesota, featured a “hang glider” in his aviation<br />

art that received the FAI Silver Medal in the intermediate category<br />

(ages 10-13). Only two American students placed in the international<br />

competition.<br />

WASHINGTON, D.C – The NASAO Center for<br />

Aviation Research & Education has announced that two<br />

U.S. students are among the nine winners of the 2013<br />

International Art Contest for young people sanctioned by the<br />

National Aeronautic Association (NAA) and the Federation<br />

Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) and managed by the<br />

National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO)<br />

Center. The art contest is designed to motivate and encourage<br />

young people of FAI member nations to become familiar<br />

with and participate in aeronautics, engineering, and science.<br />

The winners were chosen during FAI’s April meeting in<br />

Switzerland.<br />

Sky Waters of Eagan, Minnesota, and Chelsey Wen of<br />

Texas, were the two American winners. Waters received the<br />

FAI Silver Medal in the Intermediate category (Ages 10-13).<br />

Wen received the FAI Bronze Medal in the Intermediate<br />

category (Ages 10-13).<br />

Competition was intense, with 100 paintings received<br />

from 14 FAI-member countries (Australia, China, Czech<br />

Republic, France, India, Japan, Poland, Romania, Russia,<br />

Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, USA.)<br />
