The Junior League of Baltimore is thrilled to kick off the partnership this fall! The committee and the League have three major goals for this project: • Increase faculty participation, parental engagement, and community involvement in the Govans Elementary School (GES) Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) • Solidify and expand upon the relationship between GES and the Maryland Food Bank (MFB) • Assist with special projects and needs as they arise Members of this committee will be busily working to reach these goals! To increase participation, each month the committee will work with the PTA to host an event or workshop which will provide educational and fun activities for parents and children. The committee will encourage teachers’ involvement and promotion of the events via a monthly gift to the classroom/teacher. During the week of the event, each teacher Community Council INTRODUCTION TO THE GOVANS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM By Carolyn Ford could receive a brightly colored gift bag with the Junior League of Baltimore/Govans Elementary School partnership logo, a note reminding them of the monthly workshop, and a gift for the teacher and/or classroom (such as a new book for the class, a video for the class, a new ball or game for the class to take to the playground). The committee will also work with the PTA to promote these events to children and their parents via phone calls, meetings, the creation of flyers, newsletters, posters, etc. The committee will help the PTA to increase community involvement by assisting with outreach, solicitation of speakers, Govans Elementary School students perform at the Headquarters groundbreaking ceremony and/or solicitation of supplies/door prizes for monthly events. The committee will assist with solidifying and expanding the relationship between GES and the Maryland Food Bank by supporting the PTA/school liaison to the Maryland Food Bank with promotion, preparation, and tracking of food pantry utilization. The committee will focus on how the MFB relationship can be used to enhance the work of the PTA via structuring the required volunteer hours of recipients, tying food donations to educational information about nutrition, budgeting, health, and other topics. The committee will work with the Junior League of Baltimore general membership on special projects throughout the year, as time and resources allow, further strengthening the relationship between the Junior League of Baltimore and Govans Elementary School. Some possible events include a back to school uniform drive or school beautification and painting projects. Watch this space for more updates on this wonderful new project! In Your Own Words... With so many fantastic community projects, our dynamic group of new members, and incredible successes like the recent Boutique Warehouse Sale, expect to be inspired each time you read a new issue of Communiqué! It is truly amazing what our members accomplish when we work together. Please submit your article to Marlene Sandler at marlden1@comcast.net. Simultaneously, the Weekly Blast is always packed with pertinent, “Act Now” information, and is a weekly “must read” throughout the year. If you need volunteers at the Wise Penny or the Hampden Holiday Party, or hope all members will attend your committee’s weekly Happy Hour, for example, the Weekly Blast is for you. Simply write a short blurb giving members the details and submit it to Jodie Miller, our Office Manager, at jodie@jlbalt.org. Please submit by 5pm on Friday for items to be published the following week! Remember, Communiqué has a long shelf life, and is read closely by our donors and community partners as well as active and sustaining members. The Weekly Blast, on the other hand, is a quick way for members to communicate time-sensitive items that need quick attention. We hope all active and sustaining members will read – and submit to – both Communiqué and the Weekly Blast all year long, so everyone remains informed! Ladies, start your writing! During 2006-2007, the Junior League of Baltimore introduced a new concept in fundraising – the Semi-Annual Boutique Warehouse Sale. As Communiqué readers already know, these first sales created a frenzy of attention, resulting in gross sales of almost $60,000 (half went directly to support League projects and initiatives), gained the attention of over 1,500 shoppers, and brought in sponsorship from Baltimore Magazine and coverage by popular local television, radio and print media. Less known, however, is the positive impact Boutique Warehouse Sales have had on Junior League of Baltimore members involved in producing the events. From its inception, the sales were a creative solution to meeting the Junior League of Baltimore’s fiscal needs for the year. Playing on a similar idea done in the forprofit sector of Atlanta every year, Roberta Deupree, a Junior League of Baltimore member and Atlanta native, suggested the concept to her Committee Chair, Ginger Mihalik. Mihalik admits that while she was immediately excited by the idea, she was a bit worried about the challenge of persuading area boutiques to sign on. Ultimately, however, utilizing sales and presentation skills developed as a longtime member of the organization, this reservation quickly dissolved. “I would never have had the nerve to go out and solicit the boutiques for something like this – to say to them, ‘we have this great idea for everyone to partner up, make lots of money, gain more exposure and have a positive impact on our own community’ – had I not spent several years in the Junior League of Baltimore, on committees where I could learn these skills,” she explains. Boutiques were instantly interested and signed on with enthusiasm, some even Finance Council BOUTIQUE WAREHOUSE SALE: TRAINING MEMBERS WHILE RAISING FUNDS By Cindy Galka going as far as to encourage other upscale shops to do the same and share some of their most successful promotional ideas. Mihalik continues, “The idea has been met with a lot of energy and support from the boutiques. Through our partnership with them, we’ve all gained greater insight on how to get the attention of that segment of the Baltimore population who would be interested in attending this sort of event,” adding, “Where else would you be able to get this experience so quickly and fully” Mihalik refers here to the mission of the Junior League of Baltimore, as an “organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.” To this end, by participating in the production of the Boutique Warehouse Sale, other members have also been able to hone their existing skills and learn new ones in the areas of solicitations, public relations, marketing, event planning and project management, any of which can be extended into future work in both the nonprofit and for-profit arenas. As a new round of volunteer members will be responsible for this year’s Boutique Warehouse Sale events, this sort of professional development is bound to multiply.
