4. Politics & International Relations Research During this year the Politics group in SPRI achieved some notable publications. Cathy Gormley-Heenan’s first book, Political Leadership and the Northern Ireland Peace Process, was launched at No Alibi’s bookshop in Botanic Avenue, Belfast in December 2006. The book was published by Palgrave-Macmillan as part of the St. Antony’s College - Oxford series and was formally launched by our former colleague, Professor Moncia McWilliams, Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission. (Photo attached) Cathy has received numerous awards and commendations for her teaching, which is heavily influenced by her research agenda. She has been awarded the new entrants prize in the Political Studies Association’s (PSA) Bernard Crick Awards for Outstanding Teaching in 2006, was commended in the European Political Science Network’s Innovative Teaching Awards in 2007, and has also been awarded the University of Ulster’s Distinguished Teaching Fellowship Award in 2007. (Photo attached) Arthur Aughey’s book The Politics of Englishness was published by Manchester University Press in April 2007. This book forms part of a larger research agenda on the place of England within the new devolved United Kingdom and developed some of the arguments outlined briefly in ‘The Challenges to English Identity’ in R. Hazell (ed) The English Question Manchester: Manchester University Press (2006), 45-63. He was convenor and chair of plenary session on ‘Englishness as Ideology’ at the International Conference on Political Ideologies, University of Liverpool, 4-6 July 2007. For the period March-June 2007, he was in receipt of a British Academy small grant for research on the Campaign for an English Parliament and this has been written up as an article for Nations and Nationalism. Aughey has been involved concurrently in a large research project, funded by the Nuffield Foundation and coordinated by the Constitution Unit at University College London, which is looking at the potential trajectories of British constitutional politics over the next decade. He presented a paper on ‘The Future of Britishness’ at the project’s seminar series ‘Constitutional Futures’ at the Constitution Unit, University College London in August 2007. His contribution has been worked into a full research paper which will appear in R Hazell (ed) Constitutional Futures 2 (Oxford University Press 2008). 19
